- Broadway actors J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell are the first nonbinary actors to be nominated for Tony Awards. They’re nominated for their roles in “Some Like it Hot” and “Shucked,” respectively. American Voices host Alicia Menendez sat down with J. and Alex to talk about their nominations, their roles in these two musicals, and what it would look like for awards shows to welcome nonbinary identities. They also discussed the importance of drag as it becomes the latest target in the right-wing culture wars.

Alex and I went to the same high school together. We were even in the same drama club. They were a year younger than me, but man, they were a very good actor. That Tony was well deserved.

7. Encourage civil rioting and discourage accountability for all crime.
8. Control all balloting .
9. Control all media.
What was printed in 1954 as a possible diabolic nightmare has evoke an emerging reality. I hope that Americans will unite enough to pen a good finish

Great piece MSNBC! You had the correct 2 picks to interview. I watched the individual interviews on Morning Joe when they aired and they were just as lovely. Huge CONGRATULATIONS to both of them because it's LOOOONG overdue! Alex's voice gives me goosebumps and I (still) listen to J. Harrison Ghee's "Land of Lola" on repeat. Two AMAZINGLY talented people indeed!

I never thought that 'live' acting would be interesting, but it's a pretty heavy experience. Only seen one professional play. It was an English acting group. I was 10 or 11. They did a Chekov play in this drama office, which had a stage, I guess, for auditions in the college drama department. I got to sit, literally, on stage, and I remember how the actors were standing next to me. The 'lamp' on our table was a functioning prop. So. When you see how interesting 'live' acting is, in the back of your mind, you kinda know that LGBTQ is going to do better than most categories of professional artists, when it comes to the Tony's. It's kinda pretentious to favor LGBTQ in movies, because their best representation is 'live.' If you have major issues with LGBTQ, going to a community play or something bigger could be a quick readjustment. Doesn't mean you have to vote Biden. Just saying.

I love the diversity in Theater now, BUT wow I thought Alex was a cis woman... Both seem to present as women mostly? I am concerned about LGB and 'cis' women feeling overwhelmed by TQ+
LGBTO+ has dominated the theatrical performance genre for decades. These two are not exactly new, there is just more acceptance of them now than in the past. Many LGBTQ+ have won the Tony and many were openly LGBTQ+. Please, please, please respect women and stop referring to them as cis. Respect is a two-way street. Congratulations to them on their wins.

Can we please have a definition of non binary that makes sense? They are both sexes or neither? What does it mean? It all looks pseudo intellectual, and it is certainly pseudoscience. It’s a way of mediocre talented people to stand out and I guess we should congratulate them on gaming the system of meritocracy. Stunning and brave indeed.
