I can't believe I've been missing on this. The pirate part is so catchy, and then the opera part is just incredible. What a voice!! What a manly baritone! I'm listening to it the second time now while writing this and I absolutely adore Growltiger's singer, immediately got to the top of my fav Cats actors (if not to the first place, thanks to the opera part! John Partridge as Rum Tum Tugger is my favourite but I feel like Stanley is even more incredible!). As a Gus he's a bit different than the 1998 actor's version, but it does not bother me because he nails it too in a different way. I'm amazed!!

@@stanleyao20 Of course! You are an excellent actor!!! I can only imagine how awesome you'd sound singing the jazzy version from the 2014 London revival which I personally prefer!
So glad to be able to see the scene that was skipped from the video production due to Sir John Mills' inability to play the Growltiger part at the time! It really was an interesting piece and though the Italian Opera part seems somewhat out of place in a pirate ship segment it's so incredibly well sung. A shame it didn't go a bit more into the comedic bits more, like when Growltiger got a face-full of Griddlebone's arse and choked a bit but it was very well performed by all involved, and i loved the Siamese cats design too. Thank you for posting this!
I saw the off Broadway show back in the 80's and met Donna Lee Marshall (who played Grizabella). Growltiger was amazing to see and even though this production isn't the actual Broadway one, they still did a really good job. For those wondering, Gus was talking about his greatest role in the theater, which was portraying Growltiger.
I don't know why they just didn't adapt the lyrics to be non offensive and racist, because this song is one I look forward to hearing the most. It's just intense and powerful and dramatic.
This is my favorite part of Cat's. I first saw it on Broadway back in 1985. It was the most sensational show I ever saw live! I cannot forget this scene. Probably I love operetta's so much.

Oh, this is absolutely wonderful! I've not ever been able to see the show on stage, only the musical on dvd, and I was sad that they'd not included Growltiger. Thanks to you, I'm FINALLY able to see this scene, and you were absolutely AMAZING!
Well done! Well done! I've always had much more of a fascination for the "opera" version of Growltiger. We had the Ballad instead when I did Cats back in 2006. The Ballad is nice but the whole setting is kind of hysterical and somehow becomes less of a "play". I like the how in the "opera" version the segment calms down a bit and the actors playing Growltiger and Griddlebone really get the time and space to show off their vocal and their comedic chops. It's also a bit grander compared to the ballad. But beautiful performance of you and your Jellylorum. Great personalities and character. Where was this production? The video quality is excellent.
Thank you so much, Mark! Glad you enjoyed! I couldn’t agree more- I’ve always loved the opera version for that very reason. It provides a lot of nice vocal moments and is a fun scene to play with Griddlebone. I’ve been intrigued by the ballad version for quite some time, and would definitely enjoy giving that one a shot, should the opportunity ever arise. Both major productions I’ve been a part of had the opera version... the US tour and the Oasis of the Seas. This video is of the Oasis, I’m glad you like it... I edited all the camera angles myself ;)

So, we’ve got Gus as Growltiger, Jellylorum as Griddlebone, and I make four of the five crew mates played by Tugger, Misto, Alonzo, and Munk. As for the fifth one, I can’t quite tell if it’s Skimble from the coloring or if it’s Jerrie from the distinct white “mask” marking. I’m gonna guess it’s Jerrie, since Skimble has to get ready for his number next, so he couldn’t have been the fifth crewmate.

I hate how this got cut from the modern productions. I get that it's racist but the pentatonic melody is so gorgeous! Plus, growltiger's prejudice is the opposite of blatant racism. Im 37 now but when i was 11/12 years old i looooved to go see cats on broadway, we went probably like 12 times between 1999-2000. I miss that musical. I have seen it maybe 2 or 3 times when ot comes around on tour but they have changed some or the choreography which is disappointing. Maybe its my autism but i dont like any changes being made, cats is already perfect dont need to go around changing it. Also my favorite song in the musical was Growltigers last stand. I still love it 😁...still know all the lyrics to all the songs even the italian part
If I were to direct a production of CATS, I would put back Growltiger's Last Stand, BUT remove any racist innuendo. Changed lyrics would be(BTW, the verses not listed are not changed): Growltiger was a bravo cat who travelled on a barge In fact he was the roughest cat that ever roamed at large In London or the whole world, he pursued his evil aims Rejoicing in his title of "The Terror from the Thames!!" The cottagers of Amsterdam knew something of his fame In Tokyo and New York, people shuddered at his name They would fortify the hen house, lock up the silly goose When the rumor ran along the shore: Growltiger's on the loose! But most to cats he battled with his hatred had been vowed To cats which he conflicted with, no quarter was allowed A deadly gang of Siamese regarded him with fear Because it was one of those cats that mauled his missing ear Now on a peaceful summer night all nature seemed at play The tender moon was shining bright, the ship at Hilo bay All in the balmy moonlight it lay rocking on the tide And Growltiger was disposed to show his sentimental side In the forepeak of the vessel, Growltiger stood alone Concentrating my attention on the lady Griddlebone And my raffish crew were sleeping in their barrels and their bunks As the Atlantians came creeping in their sampans and their junks Then Genghis gave the signal to the entire horde With a frightful burst of fireworks, the enemies swarmed aboard Abandoning their sampans, their pullaways, and junks They battened down the hatches on the crew within their bunks. Oh there was joy in Paris when the news flew through the land In Istanbul and Cairo there was dancing on the Strand Rats were roasted whole in Copenhagen and Hong Kong, And a day of celebration was commanded in Bangkok!
I’m not entirely sure that the names of places were inherently racist.. plus having it all in a similar area made it cohesive. Please forgive me if my opinions are not entirely factual, I am not entirely educated on this particular subject. However, I support this version whole-heartedly and I love the way have shown just how easily they could switch the lyrics to make it less offensive and still have a memorable piece. You switched everything so well that I probably wouldn’t notice the difference if I saw the show for the first time
Are you really bringing your racist obsessional provocations to Cats? Are you claiming that Sir Andrew is a racist? You must be then. Discriminating against him and bringing false accusations. I guess it's your type who put the spots on the white kittens costume because that lovely girl played the part. Half white . . . You could just stick to riots and leave the theatre
Being in Cats was amazing! It was always one of the shows I dreamed about doing. It’s such a magical show, full of excitement. It was so much fun getting lost in another world, playing like a cat in the junkyard! I often had to pinch myself. I get to do what I love! Something to never take for granted. ;)
The Stanley Allyn Owen Page I gave that idea for my choir teacher to do in school since it’s my senior year and she does not think it’s a good idea along with some of the other kids but I said you don’t understand around Christmas I fell into a deep depression because of my dad not being there for me and this musical cheered me up I felt so much joy walking into the movies which is how I knew this musical existed I just want to say good job playing as Gus bustopher Jones and singing the addressing of cats you have such a wonderful voice thank you so much for responding to this comment
@@somethingsuable Thank you so much for the lovely complement! I also love the power musicals have to transport us and sometimes even heal us when we're going through a tough time. I don’t get how he’s mourning over his young self wishing he could do theater again but then says he could do a role again so I like the 1998 version because of that. Also because they casted someone with similar experiences.
Why doesn't the Cats Broadway Musical include some Catsuits, Jewelry, and Furstyles from around the world for Jellicle Kittens from Prep to Senior Year and Jellicle Cats from Young to Old Age?
The lyrics were changed years ago, but in addition ALW was never fond of the Italian aria section, musically... so most recently they’ve replaced it with “peeks and pollicles” .... which I’m not a fan of, in that place, in the show.
@@stanleyao20 I personally have to disagree. I honestly think that "Pekes and the Pollicles" was a great replacement! Although, I kind of would have preferred a song about Fireforefiddle, as that's the role that Gus talks about the most.

I pretty sure he did have a stunt double in the 1998 movie i forgot who it was but if you look at the credits there's "gus the theater cat" and "asparagus" (asparagus being the stunt double)
I can certainly see why Growltiger's Last Stand is often left out. It's very long, has nothing to do with anything, and is kinda racist. But still, it's the most entertaining part of the entire show. I count myself lucky to have seen it live.

Best Gus and Growltiger EVVVVVAAAAA!
Thank you!!!
7:38 goosebumps every time 👏👏👏🖤
Definitely one of the best performances of an actor portraying Gus and this scene. And I've seen CATS in person many times.
What theatre was this???
Can someone explain to me why this scene was cut? It's the first time I've seen it and it's very good. The actor who plays Gus is incredible. 🇧🇷❤
it might just be me but the back half of the aria sounds better in C than in B (I think they made the change after tour 5 closed in 2012)
why did they take this out of the revival and 2019 version , it was good
Im 37 now but when i was 11/12 years old i looooved to go see cats on broadway, we went probably like 12 times between 1999-2000.
I’m going to see Cats on tour soon, and I was wondering what should I wear? I have a Skimbleshanks costume but I’m not sure if that’s acceptable?
It is totally acceptable! We always loved to see audience members wear costumes! Hope you enjoy the new tour!
If I were to direct a production of CATS, I would put back Growltiger's Last Stand, BUT remove any racist innuendo. Changed lyrics would be(BTW, the verses not listed are not changed):
Growltiger was a bravo cat who travelled on a barge
In fact he was the roughest cat that ever roamed at large
In London or the whole world, he pursued his evil aims
Rejoicing in his title of "The Terror from the Thames!!"
The cottagers of Amsterdam knew something of his fame
In Tokyo and New York, people shuddered at his name
They would fortify the hen house, lock up the silly goose
When the rumor ran along the shore: Growltiger's on the loose!
But most to cats he battled with his hatred had been vowed
To cats which he conflicted with, no quarter was allowed
A deadly gang of Siamese regarded him with fear
Because it was one of those cats that mauled his missing ear
Now on a peaceful summer night all nature seemed at play
The tender moon was shining bright, the ship at Hilo bay
All in the balmy moonlight it lay rocking on the tide
And Growltiger was disposed to show his sentimental side
In the forepeak of the vessel, Growltiger stood alone
Concentrating my attention on the lady Griddlebone
And my raffish crew were sleeping in their barrels and their bunks
As the Atlantians came creeping in their sampans and their junks
Then Genghis gave the signal to the entire horde
With a frightful burst of fireworks, the enemies swarmed aboard
Abandoning their sampans, their pullaways, and junks
They battened down the hatches on the crew within their bunks.
Oh there was joy in Paris when the news flew through the land
In Istanbul and Cairo there was dancing on the Strand
Rats were roasted whole in Copenhagen and Hong Kong,
And a day of celebration was commanded in Bangkok!
I love this!!! I would support this 10000%
I’m not entirely sure that the names of places were inherently racist.. plus having it all in a similar area made it cohesive.
@@sassycreator2795 why was it offensive sassy? Is Andrew Lloyd Webber a racist? Or just the white theatre goers?
@@Deejaay83urj38 Hey, hey, hey. I wouldn't do that. It's just...the innuendo could be changed. I like the old version, but just with tweaked lyrics.
What was it like being in cats
My favorite theme in Cats is Grizabella's strength throughout her journey from being shunned to redemption through love and acceptance. A lesson that is timeless.
My wife and I saw the original production and back in 1982 , The lyrics were pretty racist against Asians. They weren’t right then and not right now. The music is beautiful.
I love the muzikal cats
Aj love the muzikal cats
Matt Maze and I Both Auditioned for Gus/Growltiger, Matt got The Role and I Became Little Joe: The Moonlight Cat. So For me it was a Blessing in Disguise. Charlie Martin was Our Jellicle Leader Old Deuteronomy, The Cat version of Nicodemus The Pharisee, Since Little Joe, is The Christ like Figure of CATS. #CATS2040
Dear Stanley I’m honerd to see you in cats I think I met you a long time a go
Did you do cats in Chattanooga ga ten if not thin we have not met
In the cats comunaty I’m known as Littlgriz
Hello, www very well may have met. Did you see the US Tour in 2005, 06, or 07? I also played Tugger at Cobb Energy Centre in Atlanta, GA. also, Thank you for the complement ;)
@@stanleyao20 gretings Stanley yes I did see cats in Atlanta
Ga. I’m glad to her frum you
However Every time I see Gus I can't Help but feel how he got away From Me.
I thought This Version is no longer played because of the racism lines in the lyrics.
this was from the tour that ran from 2001-2012
The lyrics were changed years ago, but in addition ALW was never fond of the Italian aria section, musically... so most recently they’ve replaced it with “peeks and pollicles” .... which I’m not a fan of, in that place, in the show.
@@stanleyao20 I personally have to disagree. I honestly think that "Pekes and the Pollicles" was a great replacement! Although, I kind of would have preferred a song about Fireforefiddle, as that's the role that Gus talks about the most.
Why doesn't the Cats Broadway Musical include some Minor and Major Roles for Children from Prep to Senior as Jellicle Kittens and Adults from Young to Old Age as Jellicle Cats?
Since John mills wasn't capable of playing growltiger
I think he could of had a stunt double to do for him
I pretty sure he did have a stunt double in the 1998 movie i forgot who it was but if you look at the credits there's "gus the theater cat" and "asparagus" (asparagus being the stunt double)
From what production is that? Cause it's has high quality cameras, editing and many different angles.
14:00 do they sing in French?
Italian
Cool
Why isn't Growltiger's Last Stand not in the revival?
its very racist
@@rachelmma now that I've listened to it, you're right
@@kentinson1670 thank you for replying, have a good day x
Jellilorum has a wonderful voice, but her movements and intonation are too nervous. And the pace, it seems to me, is too fast.
I can certainly see why Growltiger's Last Stand is often left out. It's very long, has nothing to do with anything, and is kinda racist. But still, it's the most entertaining part of the entire show. I count myself lucky to have seen it live.
Didn't there used to be a part about a parrot?
Gus sad song make cry becaus remermber my granmada
Aw, no Billy Macaw?
Was this Broadway?
Was this in the oasis? :o
Is this the new original production by Webber? I've watched the musical recording but Growltiger was never included. So it is also included in the original play?
Truly wonderful... Please upload the complete show. And there is nothing racism in this. The thais are winning the battle, how can that be racism 🤔
