Absolutely true. One winter my old house heating from the 60s broke down. No money for repairs. Tell you what ? I never had a cold that winter. Love your posts done a lot of camping in the winter. Loved the freedom.

What a lovely life you two have. It must be such a freeing feeling to have just the basics to worry about, keeping warm, food etc. that’s the only worries we should have as humans really, society has made life much more complicated then it ever needed to be. I would love to simplify my life, if it wasn’t for my husband and children and the life we’ve built together, I wouldn’t bother having a house and the amount of work and money it takes to run it. Just isn’t really worth it.

There's enough dead wood out there to make an a frame, to hang your tarp over to shed snow better, you could also use those fir tree branches to help insulate under the tarp, fair play to you both for living like this, stay safe

I admire people like this who dare to challenge the status quo and live as they feel like living! I bikepack and wild-camp several thousand kilometres at a time but during the summer months. I’ve met people on my way who had camped in the forests of Finland in the winter and they told me the body starts to adapt to the cold at a certain point.

Good on ya, both of you, freedom of the outdoors, fair play doing it in a tent, my misses and i were part of the travelling community 30 years ago, we were labelled new age travellers but you only really travel during the festival season, most of the ttwe were static on a site somewhere. We lived in trailers/caravans and trucks mostly, done the picking season round Kent, Cornwall and Evesham for money and normally got a park up on the farm we worked on, sometimes in a tent. Crowboruogh Barracks near Tunbridge Wells was a huge site, biggest in Europe, parties galore, we live in a house now, had kids on the road but got a house to bring them up in, we didnt think it was fair dragging them around the country. I walked the full length of Hadrians wall last year and slept wherever I could hide out in my tent. I prefer it here in north wales as many places to camp without being disturbed

I love winter camping !! You two seem to like being in Nature. I sure do !! I use hit tents and wood stove and it's real nice. I figure the woods free ,why not take advantage of the opportunity to be comfortable. Ive roughed it and it wasn't so nice, especially when the wind blows. have fun be well 🌲🛶👋

I'm doing that tonight . Were expecting 1 -1/4 of rain Thursday/ Friday. I have a teepee and wood stove setup and a Eureka Timberline 4 which I put a big tarp over it I use bungee cords between two trees with plenty of coverage .plus the timberline has a rainfly. I'm staying in the Eureka. Teepee ( polomy) is in rough shape. The zippers suck on tents . They need to start using military grade ones. We definitely need the rain !!! It's been a drought around here in Connecticut. Looking forward to Winter and hopefully some snow .
Rain doesn't build up, the snow does when freezing and bonding to the wet frozen tarp. But all cool, not our first rodeo.. at 10+yrs in. But need the tarp for the circumference as explained. HAPPY HOPPING 👌🏼 👍🏼

The being in a house thing, I get it, our houses are riddled with molds and dust which normally we’re not aware of. And then the heating and walking on it stirs it all up. I started working in an old building I think the carpet was 40 years old lol. I had to sit with the window open and I took antihistamines. Good job it was a temp job.
I have that same tent, I find in winter dropping the length of the poles so the gap between the floor and tent outer is smaller/touching the ground keeps the draft out
Bad idea, because we condensate, and then it'll freeze and you're sleeping in a freezer. That's why the Tarp is up, but yes... it's a good idea if a tarp is up and you're not condensed... thus, not going to freeze. It's not windy enough for us to drop it. The colder it gets... you need the air flow, but the windier it gets... lower it to stop the wind wrapping up underneath and possibly bending a pole or lifting you to space lmao. (not our first rodeo) HAPPY HOPPING 👌🏼 👍🏼
Yeah could do... but as the tarp is frozen and wet.... the snow bonds to it and will not fall off on its own sadly. But it's no bother, just a warm up exercise and it snows most years, Dependant of where we are lol... it's just freezing too quick to the tarp. I get what you mean about going in a warm house, i used to be a market trader and in winter when i went home i used to sit outside in the cold for for a while. When i did go in i would feel like i was getting flu symptoms.✌

I’m sure you have your own way of doing things and I don’t know how you have the tent set up but have you considered a couple of thermal space blankets? They are basically silver foil plastic, they fold up very small and fit in your pocket. They would be great to have just loosely draped over you when you’re sat around or spread over your sleeping bags to keep that little extra bit of heat in. Also having a thermal mat like a yoga mat or the silver bubble wrap underneath you would make a massive difference keeping you warm. Stay safe and don’t be too stubborn if it’s that cold find somewhere to get indoors to warm up, there’s lots of places offering things like that.
@merk3574 Hiya and thank you. We are not sleeping in a crisps packet even IF we got cold. Have a look at our long stay video, bag reveal and so on... we been at this for donkeys. So very adapt to what we do and don't need walkers to wrap us up lol 😆 OK in an emergency situation during mountain rescue and water etc. But nothing we incorporate into our Nomadic lifestyle. P.S.... it's OK to feel cold in winter, just like summer when we all moan saying 'it's too hot' sunstroke, heat stroke and so on. Cheers for your comment and concern, but we're alright.. we vets. For our Dog, here are the Cons.... he scents everywhere, eats lots, and needs feeding, we live with a constant blanket of fur around us especially in malt, Pros... Loyal, better hearing, guards, sniff out prey, and potential food, good alarm warning, great at tracking even in the dark, he assists (mod) with his clots and danger, loving, playful, entertaining, another body for warmth, best friends, funny, kind, caring. Most people might only spend a night or two out in the cold but end up going home just as they are getting acclimatised to the temperatures. I prefer winter for most of the same reasons as you although my outlet is mostly car camping.
Forest Nomads and the NHS already recognise us as that and titled appropriately. Dont forget that gypsies and travellers are still able to do that... theres a code. But you must be persistent, we fought for over 5yrs to get our recognised title, it is possible, but difficult. Hope this helps, HAPPY HOPPING 👌🏼 👍🏼
Misery , get a flat and log burner . Been in tents for months in winter , photographing the highlands winter wonderlands , problem is drying wet clothes after your chores . Theres more wetness than clothes you can carry camping !

Couple of poles, trimmed Hazel.. tight ridge line to keep tarp from touching your tent stop cold transfer..don't have to b a A frame. .they're people out there who deal with colder conditions .listen 2 them ❤
@carlhatcher802 If it was necessary in the UK 🇬🇧 we'd employ such techniques at a time that presents itself. It's no bother, we've been at it far too long in our country born and bred, so the 99% of weather patterns, conditions we know very well. So try not to worry, we're OK with the life we have chosen and just sharing it with people that like a bit of escapism or enjoy watching a couple of Nomads doing what we do. Central heating makes me really ill. Used to have just the one gas heater, til I was getting carbon monoxide poisoning and my mother refused to get it fixed. Anyhoo. I’ve got electric heating in the flat. I really just use one oil radiator at night. Have to sit outside for a few mins to cool down!!cheers for the video!! X

What a lovely life you two have. It must be such a freeing feeling to have just the basics to worry about, keeping warm, food etc. that’s the only worries we should have as humans really, society has made life much more complicated then it ever needed to be.
I would love to simplify my life, if it wasn’t for my husband and children and the life we’ve built together, I wouldn’t bother having a house and the amount of work and money it takes to run it. Just isn’t really worth it.

There's enough dead wood out there to make an a frame, to hang your tarp over to shed snow better, you could also use those fir tree branches to help insulate under the tarp, fair play to you both for living like this, stay safe

I admire people like this who dare to challenge the status quo and live as they feel like living! I bikepack and wild-camp several thousand kilometres at a time but during the summer months. I’ve met people on my way who had camped in the forests of Finland in the winter and they told me the body starts to adapt to the cold at a certain point.

Good on ya, both of you, freedom of the outdoors, fair play doing it in a tent, my misses and i were part of the travelling community 30 years ago, we were labelled new age travellers but you only really travel during the festival season, most of the ttwe were static on a site somewhere. We lived in trailers/caravans and trucks mostly, done the picking season round Kent, Cornwall and Evesham for money and normally got a park up on the farm we worked on, sometimes in a tent. Crowboruogh Barracks near Tunbridge Wells was a huge site, biggest in Europe, parties galore, we live in a house now, had kids on the road but got a house to bring them up in, we didnt think it was fair dragging them around the country. I walked the full length of Hadrians wall last year and slept wherever I could hide out in my tent. I prefer it here in north wales as many places to camp without being disturbed

I love winter camping !! You two seem to like being in Nature. I sure do !! I use hit tents and wood stove and it's real nice. I figure the woods free ,why not take advantage of the opportunity to be comfortable. Ive roughed it and it wasn't so nice, especially when the wind blows. have fun be well 🌲🛶👋

I'm doing that tonight . Were expecting 1 -1/4 of rain Thursday/ Friday. I have a teepee and wood stove setup and a Eureka Timberline 4 which I put a big tarp over it I use bungee cords between two trees with plenty of coverage .plus the timberline has a rainfly. I'm staying in the Eureka. Teepee ( polomy) is in rough shape. The zippers suck on tents . They need to start using military grade ones. We definitely need the rain !!! It's been a drought around here in Connecticut. Looking forward to Winter and hopefully some snow .
Rain doesn't build up, the snow does when freezing and bonding to the wet frozen tarp. But all cool, not our first rodeo.. at 10+yrs in. But need the tarp for the circumference as explained. HAPPY HOPPING 👌🏼 👍🏼

The being in a house thing, I get it, our houses are riddled with molds and dust which normally we’re not aware of. And then the heating and walking on it stirs it all up. I started working in an old building I think the carpet was 40 years old lol. I had to sit with the window open and I took antihistamines. Good job it was a temp job.

I have that same tent, I find in winter dropping the length of the poles so the gap between the floor and tent outer is smaller/touching the ground keeps the draft out
Bad idea, because we condensate, and then it'll freeze and you're sleeping in a freezer. That's why the Tarp is up, but yes... it's a good idea if a tarp is up and you're not condensed... thus, not going to freeze. It's not windy enough for us to drop it. The colder it gets... you need the air flow, but the windier it gets... lower it to stop the wind wrapping up underneath and possibly bending a pole or lifting you to space lmao. Could you maybe rig a high paracord line above the tarp through the loops to make a bit of a ridge so the snow falls off?

Yeah could do... but as the tarp is frozen and wet.... the snow bonds to it and will not fall off on its own sadly. But it's no bother, just a warm up exercise and it snows most years, Dependant of where we are lol... it's just freezing too quick to the tarp. I get what you mean about going in a warm house, i used to be a market trader and in winter when i went home i used to sit outside in the cold for for a while. When i did go in i would feel like i was getting flu symptoms.✌

It is hard man I lived on the streets of Chester in the 90's addicted to Heroin ( in the old bus shelter right in the centre of Chester). "I lost some really close friends from up there because of drugs ". Love and respect to you from Wales. ❤
I’m sure you have your own way of doing things and I don’t know how you have the tent set up but have you considered a couple of thermal space blankets? They are basically silver foil plastic, they fold up very small and fit in your pocket. They would be great to have just loosely draped over you when you’re sat around or spread over your sleeping bags to keep that little extra bit of heat in. Also having a thermal mat like a yoga mat or the silver bubble wrap underneath you would make a massive difference keeping you warm. Stay safe and don’t be too stubborn if it’s that cold find somewhere to get indoors to warm up, there’s lots of places offering things like that.
@merk3574 Hiya and thank you. We are not sleeping in a crisps packet even IF we got cold. Have a look at our long stay video, bag reveal and so on... we been at this for donkeys. So very adapt to what we do and don't need walkers to wrap us up lol 😆 OK in an emergency situation during mountain rescue and water etc. But nothing we incorporate into our Nomadic lifestyle.
P.S.... it's OK to feel cold in winter, just like summer when we all moan saying 'it's too hot' sunstroke, heat stroke and so on. Cheers for your comment and concern, but we're alright.. we vets. HAPPY HOPPING 👌🏼 👍🏼

Most people might only spend a night or two out in the cold but end up going home just as they are getting acclimatised to the temperatures. I prefer winter for most of the same reasons as you although my outlet is mostly car camping.

Forest Nomads and the NHS already recognise us as that and titled appropriately. Dont forget that gypsies and travellers are still able to do that... theres a code. Misery , get a flat and log burner . Been in tents for months in winter , photographing the highlands winter wonderlands , problem is drying wet clothes after your chores . Theres more wetness than clothes you can carry camping !
Been living this over 10yrs now. Also Mod is an ex professional published photographer and we as a couple know all about it. We've been living like this every day and night for over 10yrs, and we cope and have the skill to not just survive... we thrive. HAPPY HOPPING 👌🏼 👍🏼
But it's a personal choice, you might have found it uncomfortable, perhaps others prefer to live this way, out of this horrible system.
Couple of poles, trimmed Hazel.. tight ridge line to keep tarp from touching your tent stop cold transfer..don't have to b a A frame. .they're people out there who deal with colder conditions .listen 2 them ❤
@carlhatcher802 If it was necessary in the UK 🇬🇧 we'd employ such techniques at a time that presents itself. It's no bother, we've been at it far too long in our country born and bred, so the 99% of weather patterns, conditions we know very well. So try not to worry, we're OK with the life we have chosen and just sharing it with people that like a bit of escapism or enjoy watching a couple of Nomads doing what we do. Central heating makes me really ill. Used to have just the one gas heater, til I was getting carbon monoxide poisoning and my mother refused to get it fixed. Anyhoo. I’ve got electric heating in the flat. I really just use one oil radiator at night. Have to sit outside for a few mins to cool down!!cheers for the video!! X
