Gouache Painting Using Delicate Textures
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 фев 2021
- James Gurney demonstrates a watercolor/gouache technique that was popular in the 19th century. The method involves building up textures in at least two layers of paint with delicate strokes of the brush, using a limited palette both transparently and opaquely.

The pencil was hilarious and fooled the heck out of me haha.
Because you include giant pencils and floating queue cards I, and the other kids who grew up in the late 70s and 80s fully approve of this message. I remember when my brother and I drilled a hole through the wall separating our rooms so we could run a wire between our Radio Shack two-way mic/speakers so we could talk late into the night. We also built a pully system on the ceiling of our room that let us lift and move stuff around LOL. Very inspired by The Goonies and people like you. Thank you for this excellent art instruction and a flashback/memory to simpler times.
That's so sweet!
Always a good day when you get a James Gurney notif
Agreed.
...ication.
he stopped typing because he was spooked by the ghost still in the house
You have no idea how happy I am to see that you posted today
Yep
Same!
You’re the king of gouache, mr Gurney.
Thank you! If you like my work, you might also like Nathan Fowkes, Mike Hernandez, Syd Mead, Tad Retz, and Kazuo Oga.
@@JamesGurney Comment 'screen shooted' so i can check out these artists. Fowkes is the only one of them i currently know, and he does gorgeous work! Thank you! 😁
What an enrichment to my day. Watching your art always gives me that peaceful, satisfied, content happiness. It is a pleasure and taught and teaches me so much. Thank you so much.
Seeing him scrub haphazardly at a spot with his brush and then turn it into lovely background noise with a couple more layers is just endlessly fascinating to me.
Those people would kill for their home’s portrait. A James Gurney
I used t take photos of the ritziest houses/sailboats .... paint them at home and when they were almost done take my easle and set it up outside of the house/ boat and do touch ups. Sold many paintings that way. Marketing 101 LOL
Think I heard him say it’s public housing, in the very beginning narrative. James knows fancy houses are overrated, but period architecture like this has a local essence.
Watching James gurney videos helps calm me down. You are a gift to the world sir!
I have been painting so much indoors lately that I feel like I lost that feeling of spontaneity. It is always a pleasure to watch you paint I enjoy your explanations and are somehow able to perceive what a new learning student might be wondering for example why certain strokes are easier to paint, how to work detail with one brush. In this commercial driven world one can do so many lovely paintings with very basic sturdy supplies. Thank you very much for your art enthusiasm Mr. Gurney.
Love the giant pencil bit and seeing other artists works, the further out of art school I get the more I miss someone just randomly telling me about So-n-so, and getting to see their work. Amazing painting as always, too!
Great to hear. I'll try to do a breakaway segment for analysis and inspiration in future vids.
So nice that you and your wife share art together ❤, cool editing on this too.
Notice how intimately James knows his medium. How to obtain a particular effect comes down to how you use your materials. Very important information to keep in mind
yes, he's one of the greatest living artists.
So glad James didn't end up painting English cottage gardens the rest of his life like Thomas Koolaid, er ah I mean Kinkade.
Great video! Am I the only one totally amazed at how he make an interesting picture out of the most awful boring view on the planet? Seriously, he painted a dumpster and a telephone pole. I'm inspired to find something mind numbingly mundane and see if I can make it interesting. Keep the videos coming!! You rock!
There is no subject not worthy of painting. I love how you distill the beauty from a place many would have passed by. I especially like that you included the dumpster...
Watching your videos always fills me with joy! Thank you, James! - Beatrice
You are amazing James! What an inspiration you are, out in the cold, painting in your car!
So freakin happy to watch this instead of school work
Makes me think about the textures |i can get by intentionally using different brushes more. I've been painting a lot in watercolour and gouache lately. Fun video thanks.
I'm one of your french followers and do very appreciate your way of painting. Thank you for sharing sir, it's a pleasure to watch every of your new vids.
Pencils. 😅😂 You are a hoot! This kind of technique is something I love. And so nice of you to reference artists who use it so I can further explore their work. Thank you again, Mr. Gurney.
i bought gouache paints the other day because of your videos and now im trying to learn how to use them :3 you inspire me a lot thank you so much for making these helpful videos
Dear mister gurney, i really love your videos, especially all the effor and enthusiasm you put in all of them. You are one of my favorite artist. All the best.
WOW! Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing!!! 🤩🤩🤩
Hi James, thank you for sharing your skills and wisdom. Please never stop making videos!
Great painting, I never imagined painting in a car, but there it is !
Captures the outdoor feel of these winter days. Nicely done and enjoyable to watch!
The actual paint stroke that comes out of your brush stroke always surprises me. It doesn't seem like that's what would come out of it. So crazy, but so amazing, love your videos ♡♡
He's a master painter for sure!
Today is a good day having a new James Gurney video :)
Besides instructive and mind blowing, your videos are quite therapeutic.
Your fearlessness in your approach inspires me.
Incredible as always! ❤️ I love that you and your wife paint together
Love seeing your videos and happy you showed an auto-painting one!
Your paintings always leave me so amazed...they are detailed and loose at the same time. What a great master that you are. Thank you for being such an inspiration always.
This is gonna sound crazy, but hear me out: Girl with a Pearl Earring painting, but with James Gurney's face. Now who wouldn't want to see that? Please someone make it happen!
There is a guy who paints himself in a lot of famous styles. Sometimes even dressing up and taking reference photos first.
.....my neural network of imagination finds that’s a cursed image.
@@recoveringsoul755 whats his name??
Again your painting is so much more interesting than the actual subject matter.. you could make anything look good! 🤦♀️👏
You my sir have the steadiness of a heart surgeon! Great work💕
Love the way the snow-covered roof stands in contrast to all of the drybrush. You have such wonderful composition and, as always, your process is a joy to watch.
I really enjoyed this James, not least because you were painting whilst in your car. If I tired that I am sure it would go everywhere! I always learn something from your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Those pencils are giant! Love it!
Ive never been more in awe by an artist! This is amazing! Not just the painting and the painting tips but the video itself! WOW
How you make a mundane scene poetic! Good lesson on brush work that I hope to try. Been waiting anxiously for a new video of yours, and voila you delivered! Please keep it up we love to see your work!!
You make it look so easy. Very inspirational
Thanks for all these awesome videos. I think it would be neat if you came back and painted this same scene in summer with all the leaves so we can contrast winter textures technique with summer textures technique.
Great idea. It would be fun to see this view it in summer or autumn.
Hi James.... you do make it look easy, especially with only two colors. Thanks.
Love these demos. I learn so much. Thank you JG...you rock.
You never disappoint. Thanks, James!
Am working on developing my skills with gouache. You are a master teacher. I live in Chicago
Most excellent as always. Never a dull video
Glad you enjoyed it
Serious talent, a pleasure to watch.
Boom...it’s a finished painting!
Always mesmerized when you paint and your voice over is a great description as you go!
Take care 🇨🇦 ❤️
Watching talented artists like you get me so hyped up to paint! I don't practice enough and therefore know my skills are poor but your tutorials are so brief and helpful. I enjoy watching the real-time paintings that are 2+ hours long and I hope to get to that level of expertise but man do you motivate me! Awesome job James! So great to see you posting!
This is really a good subject !
And really you did very wonderful Landscape painting!
You did very detailed work!!
Masterclass... as usual. Thank you James!
Im supposed to be going to the gym at 12:15pm but watching this video instead. Ugh. I'll go to gym tomorrow
I always learn a lot with you sir, you are a truly inspiring master.
