4 Levels of Garlic Bread: Amateur to Food Scientist | Epicurious

- Опубликовано: 17 май 2024
- We challenged chefs of three different skill levels - amateur Desi, home cook Beth, and professional chef Saúl Montiel from Cantina Rooftop - to make us their favorite garlic bread recipe. Once each level of chef had presented their creations, we asked expert food scientist Rose to explain the choices each made along the way. Which garlic bread are you ripping into?

Desi always has 'just finished a 12 hour shift' energy
I've been in the food industry for a long time and his version is 100% what I'd be making when I got home after grinding all day
I definitely like the idea of using hotdog buns and I already love mayo as a cooking oil, but I think some jarred minced garlic would add some extra flavor for little extra cost or effort.
Like Darryl from The Office
@@lordsergal8783 I actually use brioche hot dog buns to make my garlic bread! I just put the cubes of butter on top with garlic seasoning and italian seasoning, and bake it on a lower setting, like 315-325 until its crispy on top... it slaps lmao every time.
you don't want to know what I cooked as a young Marine living off-base. This would be gourmet bread. never look down on simple recipes and methods. It is nice to know better as you get better, but some of the best chefs in the world get off shift and go eat a hot dog!
See this is why I love Chef Saul he doesn’t strongly criticize, he supports, “if it’s all you got, why not.” FACTS! ☺️
jup, gotta love someone who understand that not everyone has the time, money, energy, skill or ability to make level 2 things.
Beth just over here hate'n on the simplicity.
I'm ok with using what you got, but using hot dog buns intentionally is boarding on ketchup on French Toast.
@@andie_b I'd only criticize after trying it once first. It seems sketchy, but lots of perfectly fine cost/time saving behaviors seem that way.
I think criticisms is important for one to grow. Otherwise people get complacent.
One thing I still want to see from this series is taste testing. Every chef should try every version.
yes i would love that!
Totally agree with that. Would be nice to see each persons reaction to trying something different than from what they know.
I came here to say this. It was a let down that nobody tried anybody else's. I guess they couldn't schedule it better? Or is there more video for paying customers?
It's probably more expensive to have them all in the same place at the same time.
@@troacctid If they're not all filming together, how do they get all three to react to what the others are doing? There are enough reactions to each other that no one of them could have been filmed and finished before the other two.
If Beth baked her own bread, and I know she's fully capable of doing so, she'd totally be a level 3 chef. As if we didn't all know she's there already (Level: Grandma).
I watched the video in the background while doing something else and for most part of the video legit thought she was the pro chef and was wondering why the level 2 chef was wearing branded chef's clothes. No shade on the pro all of them were great!
Grandma level has the skill of the pros but knows how to save time and money :)
She was just the cutest!
At first I thought she was the pro too
Beth's garlic bread is a work of art.
her recipe reminds me of the (Blooming Onion).
Had to try it for myself.
It is exactly as amazing as it looks.
Right? Now I really want to make it for a family dinner!
Looks so good
Ong I want that one the most
What we really need is a pro v pro video with Saul and Frank. Any video with either of them, I know is a good one. Love Saul's passion
This sooo this!
hell yes, french tradition vs mexican culture
I am here for this.
Or a Beth v Lorenzo (we don't CALL them pros...but they're totally pros) episode.
Add little test by using exact same ingredients but each chef must cook different dish.
@@padoco73 Old School v New School
Please keep bringing Desi back. He just gets us. 😂
Saul: "So I'm making this amatriciana sauce with guanciale, a cured pork cheek with nice caramelized flavors of onion to make a rich complex tomato based sauce"
Desi: "Anyway so I'm back from the microwave"
i gets so excited when i see chef Saúl
Same! He always lights up my day.
We love chef saúl
Desi's version is great for when it's 3 a.m., all the stores are closed, and your pantry just doesn't have all the good stuff the other two chefs had available. I've made hot-dog bun garlic bread many a late night! Although mine uses butter, not mayo, I'll have to give the latter a try the next time I'm up way too late! I adore Saúl's attitude -- he's never pretentious, keeps it real, and always, always comes up with something fantastic in these shows. Beth's version looked pretty darned good, too. I'd love any of these.
Yuck, mayo 🤢. Beth's version was beautiful though.
Emily walked so Desi can run. This guy NEVER misses at all!
What happened to Emily?
@@TheStrategist314 she's level 2 now
@@TheStrategist314 Queen Emily is now level 2 chef
@@christopherwayneramos5526 She had a recent live stream on her channel where talked a bit about it, and how she got on the channel in the beginning.
@@FF18Cloud OMG 😭what episode is she on as Lvl 2??
Beth version is very close to my heart. My grandma used to do something similar, but we would skip the cheese and instead we would dip bread sticks from such loaf in cheese fondue
this comment is smut, I love it
My mom does this at least once a year, though we are planning to add cream cheese next time based on inspiration from a Korean street food we saw
She baked it from her hearts ❤
Props to the editing crew for this. As someone who has been editing videos for several years, this process is genius. Bravo.
I agree. Great editing
how do they do it tho? is it all filmed concurrently?
@@tnmygrwl Probably not, the editing just takes advantage of the fact that they do similar steps and talk about similar ingredients
Emily: Ketchup
Daniel: Blackberries
Stephen: Cheesecake
Penny: Booze
John: Supermarket
Desi: Airfryer
Frank: Homemade Salt
Not the *blackberries*
@@Vileplume87 we will never forget the blackberries
Penny: RUM
Lorenzo: butter
King: fish sauce
Is there anything Saúl CANT do!?
Love Beth’s version
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made a version of Desi’s garlic bread! Making do with what you have, love seeing it!!!
Honestly not mad at the level 1 bread. If I was a broke as college student I'd mess with that. Level 2 just looked the most visually appealing. Saul's bread...that's just a deep flex!!
As a somewhat skilled chef with access to most ingredients used here, I still make a version of Desi's garlic bread. Gotta buy 8 hamburger buns, but only need like 2-4. Can't let the others go to waste.
@@porkrind that level three looked ok but I don’t have 12 hours to make garlic bread.
@@Sletchman Italian food is meant to be simple and good. Beth did way too much for what it was.
Chef Saúl always seems like he's having the best time, and I'm 100% on board with that.
Beth’s definitely take it for me this episode- that looks PHENOMENAL. Can definitely tell it’s made by the hands of a loving grandma- something about a grandma’s cooking just can’t be competed with ❤️❤️ I know it’s gonna be a good episode when she’s in it
If I was a chef I would want to be a chef like Saul. He’s not elitist he just loves food and he has fun with it. Also who else is jelly of all the good food Beth’s family gets to eat lol. Desi makes me laugh every time. I love these three.
Chef Saúl is so talented. He’s such an amazing Italian and Mexican chef. Beth is an og Nona, would love to eat her food! Desi real AF, food doesn’t have to be complicated
Mexican food chef: ABSOLUTELY.
Italian food chef: ................. No sir!!!!
1. You guys wrote in your description level 2- Daniel, you need to fix it.
2. I love Saul going “I’ve never been to Italy but I’ve seen enough movies ❤” love it!😂
Yeah
Who are John LoPesto and Daniel Victor?
Copy/paste ftw
2. I love that too lol. Hope he gets to vacation in Italy soon
Wheres the bit about daniel?
As someone who was born and grew up in Northern Italy, I find it interesting how garlic bread is really not a thing in that area, especially not to accompany pasta dishes (carbs + carbs would be redundant).
I am familiar with focaccia though, and oh gosh I'd love to taste what Saul prepared, it looks delicious!
(Beth's version may not be an Italian thing, but also looks like a great and tasty snack!)
I think that garlic bread (like it is presented here) isn't an Italian thing at all, but Italian American derivative.
it's Italian American for sure though, and served in every Southern Italian American restaurant here
@@GigiStar01 It's a great idea - don't know who thought of it first. Love love love it.
Yeah, the carbs + carbs thing always makes garlic bread as a pasta side dish weird to me. Obviously still love garlic bread though (honestly, how could someone not like garlic bread).
@@itsgoingtobeok-justbreathe4808 garlic bread is even served at the Chinese restaurants lol
Beth saying "its good for you because it tastes good" is why we like to watch her!!
Hot dog man knows the struggle. I'm rooting for you. 🤣 Update. I'm not sure about the mayo but it looks good. For me a nice french bread buttered with a nice garlic butter or regular butter with garlic powder is all I want. Sometimes simple is all you want.
I've made a few dishes with mayo out of curiosity. Strangely, the characteristic mayo flavor often disappears leaving only the creaminess.
actually mayo is a secret ingredient in the best grilled cheeses instead of butter. after all it's just emulsified oil and egg
@@itsgoingtobeok-justbreathe4808 im still taking the butter all day everyday and twice on sunday
Garlic powder is easy but buy a simple garlic press $1/£1 and the price of a couple of cloves of garlic is nothing, takes no time to smash peel and press and it really is more important than all the other ingredients combined! Trust me, an anonymous internet person who replied to you to give you advice which I've learned and I could never even consider using garlic powder for garlic bread unless it was my only option :)
@@EliteGi Technically, you don't even need to peel them if using a press, but also jarred minced garlic works just fine for this.
I love Beth's little happy dance when tasting her bread. I definitely do that when something is extra delicious lol
Desi is hilarious!! Having him and chef saul in a video made my day 😂😂
Desi: I like doin less. Quick and less.
Also Desi: I'm down for a sponsorship, I need the money.
This is my entire vibe on RUclips and TikTok
He literally triggered me. Now i understant why racism exists.
@@nothingyet120what does this mean?
@@adimfavourmaris4578they are racist and want to have excuses for it, when Desi is just saying something most college students would say. We don't have time to be expert chefs, and we have little money.
Honestly I love this episode. A real example of how something so simple can be so personal, and I love them all
Desi's recipe would be great for a snack,
Beth's would be great for a party or even an appetizer,
Saul's would be great as a side dish or for bread to go with another dish.
I love how all recipes are good in their own right when you think about how to use them
Hmm... I want Saúl's version. The dipping sauce look so good.
I think I'm gonna have to try Beth's recipe - with Saul's fresh herbs (I have a nice herb garden in my own yard - everything he has, I grow).
I love chef Saul, I love how spontaneous he is. he really loves what he does, he was born to be a chef
Beth's bread + Saul's Sauce = perfection
TRULY
I would love to see a cook off between Chef Saul and Chef Frnk because they're my faves
Sauls bread looks like the kind of thing I would have to make twice because I ate the entire first batch snacking on it.
I love this Level 1 chef - it's realistic, it's what the average human with everyday pantry items can make!
I love Desi’s struggle meals. Very relatable and easy to copy
Saul's focaccia looks great but Beth's bread makes me drooling. Looks so good.
Saul is such a mood and so is Desi. Saul respects desi for using what he has.
This line up of chefs is amazing! Beth with her warm, comforting aura like grandmama, Saul, whose energy is awesome 👌 as usual and newcomer Desi, authentic 💖 as heck! Their garlic bread 🍞 😋 delicious 😋 😍
Look, its unconventional, but Desi's has everything you need: garlic, Italian seasoning, fat, and crispy. Using hot dog buns pre-portions his bread. His dipping sauce isn't anything special, but also, its fast. That's the ultimate thing: its not half bad food, that you can make quickly
You have forgotten to say 'if were born without a sense of taste'
@@DPB1987 you crazy if you think that has no taste
Chef Saul LET’S GO! ❤, he always makes 🔥 food!
Beth and sauls are definitly better than my university days garlic bread. Small tiger baguette, halved then cut open. Garlic salt + butter (preferably olive oil butter) mixed together then spread across the open bread. Fresh grated Mozzarella on top with dried basil on top. Into the oven till the cheese is melted then freshly crack black pepper. Cheap and easy to do
Beth is just rocking that Grandma power of cooking food you know will please EVERYONE.
Every time Saúl cooks, I'm filled with this sense of giddiness and merth. Not just because of his skill, but also his personality.
Beth's happy dance as she tasted was the cutest thing ever
Desi gives me "Brother Man from fifth 👋🏾 floor" energy/vibes. And I LOVE IT 🥰🥰🥰. #IYKYK
Beth's bread was the best. It was the CHEESE PULL for me 🤤🤤🤤
I want the end result of Beth's garlic bread, while using Desi's effort 😂😂
& SAÚL is EVERYTHING.. where is his restaurant 🤤🥰🤤🥰
How is it even possible that someone is as charismatic as Saul?
Beth's food always makes the most sense time-wise and cost-wise. And it looks the best!
@Chritopher Chase - Sorry, but I think that Beth's creation looks awful - too hi-cal, too greasy, too messy.
@@MossyMozart If you're looking for healthy, non "greasy" GARLIC BREAD you have already lost
This is the only level 1 chef that I can beat😂
I don't want to beat Desi. I want to JOIN him.
Saul is literally the only person I'd ever trust if they said, trust me, I saw it in a movie once.
I love Beth's clever use of her loaf
The way Chef Saul talks to the food is my favorite! 🤣👏🏽
The music in Beth's voice as she says "There you go."
Pure love!
i had to immediately get up and make Desi's version. Excellent! My roommate was a chef in a nursing home. She always made her garlic bread with mayo. Also her french toast. It works just fine for quick, easy and delicious.
I want Beth's bread with Chef Saul's sauce!
I've made garlic bread from hotdog buns and Desi is correct that they toast up really well. The outside will get crisp while the inside stays soft. With enough garlic and butter it's an amazing complement to any Italian dish. If that's what you have or what you love go for it. I love Beth's take on turning the garlic bread into a family activity too. What a wonderful and creative idea! Saul's focaccia with the dipping sauce also looks amazing. Now I'm hungry for garlic bread. 😊
What I would do to improve Desi's garlic bread would be to use fresh garlic and herbs.
Welcome back Rose!
I just know whenever I see Chef Saúl there's going to be delicious chaos
'Delicious chaos' is the best description of what Saúl does I've read so far!
"Alright I'm back from the microwave" lmaooo 🤣
Beth's garlic bread with Saul's dipping sauce 🤤
I just need more of Beth. Grandma power.
Beth is the grandma we all deserve!
Saúl had my favorite. Love Rose.
Saúl is a gift we did not deserve but what we were blessed with, cheers to his culinary genius.
Rose is my favorite part of this series. So knowledgeable and she explains everything with ease. I'm fascinated every time!
I always imagine on this format, the three plates are in front of me and I think which I'd pick. Beth got me today.
Desi's recipe reminds me of the "cooking" shows my sister and I use to do when we were younger.
"Now you pour the milk in the bowl, but not too much, if you want your Frosted Flakes to stay crunchy" 😂😂😂
I need more of Desi in my life ❤️🥰❤️😂🙌🏾
Room temperature butter, add a bunch of crushed garlic, some garlic powder, fresh herbs, salt… spread thickly on any slice of bread and broil. Delicious every time.
I love chef Saul, he is so chill! "if that's what you got...." YES!!!!! A professional chef for the people!
When Beth said that each piece is gonna be stuffed with garlic and Jesus at 2:20 I knew I want to taste this so bad!
Desi loves his air fryer, but have to say as soon as Saul (sp) said focaccia bread I new he had the best
If I ever win the lottery I'm hiring Saul to be my chef. His food and his personality are always top notch!
Emily got too good to be a level 1 chef, so I'm glad there's more contrast between the levels again
I’ve made Desi’s version idk how many times! Also good with bagels or hamburger buns. Even just plain sliced bread too!
Love saul's version, for the first time I feel confident enough to try this at home. I'm sure it will come out delicious.
Man... Never knew Desi's energy (or lack of ) plus Chef Saul's energy... GOLDEN!
I would like to see Beth and Saul together in Pro vs Novice
Guys… You completely skipped Rose doing a breakdown of Saul’s sauce… 😮
2 thing that never can't be out of Mexican Food...
-Spiciness
-Aaaand Meat... like a lot of M E A T
Love the charisma of all three chefs in this one!
they all looked delicious. No need to be snobby about the Level 1 chef's bread. I would eat Desi's garlic bread any day...It's respectable and tasty. And I gotta say, as much as I love Beth, I didn't think her garlic bread turned out well. In fact, it seemed like she just tried the cubed bread trick for the 1st time on camera, and i don't think it was that successful. too many surface areas to cover, and the cheese was overkill and b/c she used pre-shreded, it didn't melt that much. There were HUGE globs of garlic in some areas (6:04) and barely any in others. I think garlic bread is best with a restrained garlic touch...a little goes a long way. I also thought hers would have been much better if it was wrapped in foil and cooked at a lower heat for 20 min, then crust exposed for 10 for crisping. the ones I'd reach for in order of preference are, 1. Desi, 2. Saul, 3. I'd go back to Desi, b/c i wouldn't want a big bite of probably still raw garlic from Beth's! Usually everything she makes looks amazing....this however shows she's a mere mortal.
This was awesome. I think this is the first video I've seen where all three dishes are good, usually either lvl1 it's meh/poorly done or lvl3 it's an overcomplicated flex that somehow seems worse than the simpler alternatives, but in this one lvl1 it's an awesome, quick, no nonsense snack while lvl3 it's more involved but still down to earth and something I'd make and eat happily.
I wished all chefs could taste all plates together and comment on each other
i want to give beth a hug shes just so lovely and warm
Beth makes me miss all the women in my life that made delicious Italian food. Beth, can you adopt me?! ❤️❤️❤️
I wish they could try each others recipes to learn from each other!
I wish I lived close to Beth and could visit her. She looks about my age and we probably have more in common than we don't. And she's a good cook.
Desi needs his own show for folks that aren't fancy
Saul is quickly becoming my favorite person here
Saul is my absolute favorite! Honestly, there is no other person on this show that I really care about when I see them, but when I see him I smile! He is so positive, upbeat and his food always looks so tasty and amazing! [I don't eat pork, so sans the pork, I know he cooks a lot with it but I would just not include it haha]
All of them I would eat and enjoy. Beth's I would probably go to eat first. Desi's is like a late night snack and Chef Sauls foccacia looks very nice and also yummy
I see Beth and Saul and I clicked so fast i sprained my finger!
@Beth … I made your garlic bread two weeks ago for guests. They just about finished it. I had the remainder for breakfast lunch snd dinner the next day. They were back last night still raving about this amazing recipe! You rock!!
The episode i didn't know i needed all three of these chefs are great !!! Really would love to see Desi in another role with either Saul or Frank it would be hilarious!!! Cheers from Colombia amigos please continue doing these videos:)
I might have to try hot dog buns sometime. I guess I'm a level 0 chef because I usually just grab a slice of bread, toast it, butter it, and sprinkle on some garlic powder.
Beth's cheesy, gooey, pull apart bread looked amazing!
I would try Chef Saul's but its not something I would ever make myself.
I wish I had a man tell me he loves me the same way Chef Saul expresses his love for garlic
I have made all 3 of these types of garlic bread in the past. I get what Desi said - hot dog rolls do a great job! Good for a quick meal but sometimes you like to get fancy.
I see Chef Saul, I hit the like button right away
Beth is the most level 3- worthy level 2 chef in this series.
