    This might sound crazy but the first time I really "heard" this song was after my son died at the age of 33. I turned him on to all kinds of music. He played the guitar, wrote songs and was awesome! I followed the Dead but this song has a completely different meaning now! It was just 2 years ago that I lost my boy! I her it all the time now and think he is sending a message to me.... I love you Mike'y!

    All I know is that this is a KILLER version of He's Gone. Donna actually sounds good and the jazzy interlude was done with emotion. When they nail it, they nail it!

    My friend and I hitched-hiked to California from NH in 1978. I was Gone. I've gone through years of living. My Dad is 91 years old, and he's about at the end...to make a long story short...
    This song has all kinds of meanings, through the years, and all good. All good. All good. The Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia.

    I was one of the many fortunate ones to meet Jerry and the boys back in 1990 at Chinese New Years with my friend who made a giant red dancing bear costume. The promoters asked if we could come back stage to show Jerry and the band plus their kids the costume. This was one of Wavey Gravy's idea, he loved it. We even made Bear bucks for each venue. We will always carry a part of Jerry in our hearts and souls. Thank you Bob and Phil for keeping the flame alive with FURTHER. Thank you,

    It did become about Pigpen and anyone else close to the band who passed but Rodrigo is correct. It was originally written about Mickey's father. Pigpen didn't stop touring with the Dead until June of 72 and this song was played live for the first time in April of 72.

    Part of my education while finishing my second year of teaching. $ students took me to RFK stadium-Grateful Dead and the Allmand Brothers, 12 hours of purity. Set me up for 30 years of teaching HS. Love to those Gaithersburgh High students. U. of Md. gave me my degree, but my students graduated me. Some of the are already dead. Peace, sweet to dream and dream sweet. Hm. I just noticed this must have been the concert. It was all those garbage bags filled with weed, piles of coke, led. Free, imagine that!! Some greedy money being made now!

  • @ojanderson776
    @ojanderson776 7 лет назад +1

    Wonderful the meanings their songs can have. For me this song is about Mickey Hart's dad, but when I was helping to care for my dad with cancer I knew exactly what Phil was saying with 'Box of Rain'. Yet 25 years earlier my wife to be and I first told each other "I love you" slow dancing to 'Box' in my living room. When we divorced, 'Ship of Fools' was my soundtrack, even though that song was originally inspired by problems arising from the Shakedown Street peddlers. The Dead is life.

    This song isn't about Pigpen, they sang it on the Europe 72 tour when Pig was still in the band. Its about Lenny Hart, Mickey's dad and the bands ex-manager who stole aproximately 100,000 dollars from the band. Which back in 71 was equal to exactly one fuck-ton. That's why Mickey quit from '71 to '75.

    Holy cow, what a trippy tempo for this song...makes me want to melt into the floor (in a good way).

    Makes me think of Bob Hayutin, Lewis & Clark College '88. Taken too early in 2000, loved the Dead and Jerry...and the kindest soul I have known. RIP

    'he's gone" will be the title of my autobiography ...
    for a variety of reasons
    , not least of which is my appreciation for this songt
