If I was trying to explain to someone who Robert Hunter was, and what his writing style was like... this is the song I would play for them. Vivid, haunting, darkly colorful, and enchanting.
Imo Robert is one of the great poets of the 20th century, he finds those blends of tragedy and comedy, universal and relatable. I often think one of the things that makes his lyrics so great is the universality of it all. Beautiful, and when sung by Jerry ...nothing better.
@@squatchscoutie5893 I feel the same way about Robert Hunter, just can't put into words as great as you did. Fantastic comment. Isn't it great we have these guys to lift or souls. For me. They're like the safety net that keeps me dropping too low when I'm down and lifts me up further when I'm high. If there is anything that is proof that music is healing to the soul it's in the chemistry of Hunter and Garcia and the entire band and Grateful Dead and co.

THANK YOU FOR RELEASING A SHOW WITH THIS SONG ON IT This is the FIRST JG official release featuring Reuben and Cherise, one of the very most beloved Garcia/Hunter songs. It's quite overdue but nevermind that, just thank you, thank you. It's quite a fine performance as well. It starts a bit slow but finds a nice groove, he gets the lyrics right and plays a lovely version of the end solo... Wonderful. I will absolutely purchase this release. Thanks again!
What a great show! I remember hanging out in parking garages before the show while the snow came down. The night before at the Rosemont Horizon was pretty good too! My favorite that night was "Shining Star" - can't wait to get this.
Was always amazed how much the JGB Band complimented the Grateful Dead........this band found its wings in the late 80s.......saw them in the early 70s......never scratched this musical itch near enough....thanks JGB.........
Never heard this song before spotify intro'd me to it, the second half, the instrumental, is addicting as hell, I'm glad it's as long as it is. Thank you for great music.
This is a really slow R&C. Usually Jerr' and the gang would play it at such a quick pace they almost seemed to stumble through the chord changes, but I have been waiting to hear them slow it down to a decent pace. Love it, love it, love it!
I would say a close 2nd to my all time favorite r&c from 5--5-82 jgb oregon state prison... all accustic as im sure you already know...but that entire show was literally to kill for~! best love song i've ever heard... i get the chills everytime i hear this song~ ForeverGrateful
That's what I was going to say this one of the greatest love stories ever written. It's one of Jerry's greatest Tunes. They probably give it a thumbs down because they don't understand and you can't explain it to them. ;)
I always know one just not commenting on this entire song. I've been to a Jerry Garcia man wants I've been to the dead about eight times but I tell you Jerry Garcia uninhibited will make things happen in this song as one of them
This really was a great show, the set and setting were perfect, the band was phenomenal, and the atmosphere was explosive. I remember the parking garage after the show. Drums, a fire, lots of smoking and drinking, and all the military people with their dressed up wives coming from some fancy dinner having to pass all of us on one of the levels of the parking garage, that was entertaining!
Cherise was brushing her long hair gently down It was the afternoon of carnival As she brushes it gently down Reuben was strumming his painted mandolin It was inlaid with a pretty face in jade Played the carnival parade Cherise was dressing as Pirouette in white When a fatal vision gripped her tight Cherise beware tonight Reuben, Reuben, tell me truly true I feel afraid and I don't know why I do Is there another girl for you? If you could see my heart, you would know it's true There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you I'd swear to it on my very soul If I lie, may I fall down cold Reuben was strumming his painted mandolin The breeze would pause to listen in Before going on its way again Masquerade began when nightfall finally woke Like waves against the bandstand, dancers broke To the painted mandolin Looking out on the crowd, who is standing there Sweet Ruby Claire at Reuben stared, at Reuben stared She was dressed as Pirouette in red And her hair hung gently down The crowd pressed round, Ruby stood as though alone Reuben's song took on a different tone And he played it just for her The song that he played was the carnival parade Each note cut a thread of Cherise's fate It cut through like a blade Reuben was strumming his painted mandolin When Ruby froze and turned to stone For the strings played all alone The voice of Cherise from the face of the mandolin Singing Reuben, Reuben tell me true For I have no one but you If you could see my heart, you would know it's true There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you I'd swear to it on my very soul If I lie, may I fall down cold The truth of love an unsung song must tell The course of love must follow blind Without a look behind Reuben walked the streets of New Orleans 'til dawn Cherise so lightly in his arms And her hair hung gently down

It was a great show with a very blusey Lay Down Sally. Very different feel than the next night in Minneapolis, which was also a great show. And since the next night in Minneapolis was the last show of the tour we were treated to a rare Jerry Band encore when he did Wonderful World (the Louis Armstrong one not the Sam Cooke one which is also great).

Haunting song
Best version ever
Cherise was brushing her long hair gently down
It was the afternoon of carnival
As she brushes it gently down
Reuben was strumming his painted mandolin
It was inlaid with a pretty face in jade
Played the carnival parade
Cherise was dressing as Pirouette in white
When a fatal vision gripped her tight
Cherise beware tonight
Reuben, Reuben, tell me truly true
I feel afraid and I don't know why I do
Is there another girl for you?
If you could see my heart, you would know it's true
There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you
I'd swear to it on my very soul
If I lie, may I fall down cold
Reuben was strumming his painted mandolin
The breeze would pause to listen in
Before going on its way again
Masquerade began when nightfall finally woke
Like waves against the bandstand, dancers broke
To the painted mandolin
Looking out on the crowd, who is standing there
Sweet Ruby Claire at Reuben stared, at Reuben stared
She was dressed as Pirouette in red
And her hair hung gently down
The crowd pressed round, Ruby stood as though alone
Reuben's song took on a different tone
And he played it just for her
The song that he played was the carnival parade
Each note cut a thread of Cherise's fate
It cut through like a blade
Reuben was strumming his painted mandolin
When Ruby froze and turned to stone
For the strings played all alone
The voice of Cherise from the face of the mandolin
Singing Reuben, Reuben tell me true
For I have no one but you
If you could see my heart, you would know it's true
There's none Cherise, except for you, except for you
I'd swear to it on my very soul
If I lie, may I fall down cold
The truth of love an unsung song must tell
The course of love must follow blind
Without a look behind
Reuben walked the streets of New Orleans 'til dawn
Cherise so lightly in his arms
And her hair hung gently down
Thanks Alan
Cherise was the mandolin.
