- The complete tech breakdown of Infinity Ward's much-awaited follow-up. Sporting an upgraded IW 9 engine, all consoles get a strong workout in the new campaign mode - with the Amsterdam stage being a big highlight. In fact we loved it so much we put together a comparison with real world footage - as kindly provided by Melih Korkmaz (@korkmazmelih). And beyond that? Tom covers the highs and lows in 120Hz performance on PS5, Series X and S.

You know video game graphics have made it when they start getting side-by-side comparisons with real-life.
haha it already happened 20+ years ago though.
Infinity ward's work is always so insanely good. The animations and attention to detail is amazing.
@@Bigdaddymittens can you imagine if they weren’t in CoD prison and they could actually make something new?
I think its more because it represents a real place... The graphics arent really "real life like", in fact, many other games look much better than this, even TLoU 2 on the Ps4.
Biggest contributor to this is the lighting and the textures, CoD just look like a game while TLoU 2 or RDR 2 often look very real.
That was happening way back about 20yrs ago with games like 2002's The Getaway franchise on PS2 when they recreated London in extreme detail. And Project Gotham Racing 4 on Xbox 360 in 2007. That thing still looks amazing..
As an Amsterdam resident myself I thought it was real footage for a good 4-5 seconds before realizing it was a rendering. It was so good that it was aired on national TV.
Ik mis alleen de FEBO op die hoek
As an Eindhoven resident, I also thought it looked great. Now that's Amsterdam and Rotterdam have been featured in a game.... Is it Eindhoven's turn next?

in 40 years we've gone from blocks on a screen to life like visuals.
It’s kinda crazy how many things have change in this short amount of time vs the rest of history . I’m about that age and I’ve seen my grandparents black and white TVs now we have 4-8k TVs now . Used 8 track in old cars to digital music . I lived thru so many examples like that
My 7 year old brain (now 45) would have melted back then ha
I remember when 3 colors on the screen at the same time was ground breaking for gaming visuals. 😂 50 year old gamer here. 😁
It's been quite a ride growing up on the NES.
Wish the video was a text showcase video and included PC
The reason the bridge scene was dropping such high frames on Xbox is because you were using a long range scope . The second time around you use a short range scope and there are no visble drops because it doesn’t have to render 2 things at once. Kinda weird for you guys to miss something as obvious as this
True. It had different LOD assets loaded in between those two different times. Particularly the smoke effects, most likely, as those have their own aggressive LOD modes based on distance and zoom.
Good eye. I didn’t pick up on it right away myself.
It's well known that DF is a channel for Sony fanboys.
@@bbbazzinga what DF just straight up gives you the framedata of the games...
@@bbbazzinga ?
@@bbbazzinga lol
What’s impressive with the real life Amsterdam footage is that it has roughly the exact same FOV as the game does in that scene. Either an incredible happy accident or great attention to detail.
It was not an accident
@@corruptedpoison1 What’s still a minor shame is that there is an FOV setting in the console menus that Tom could have tuned to be exactly perfect, but it was darn close. I thought they still didn’t have FOV settings in CoD console versions, but I saw it show up later in the video.
the quality difference between pre rendered and real time is so huge
Well yeah. Just a design choice, and one they've done for the last several games. Personally, I didn't find it too distracting, but I understand where that's a jarring transition to some.
I'm okay with the discrepancy because the cinematics are so good looking I'd have hated to miss out on them
makes sense. Pre rendered movies still are miles ahead of anything done in real time as they don't care about how long it takes to render each frame where as a game feels best when a frame is rendered in 33.33ms or less
@@crestofhonor2349 you typed 16.66ms wrong ;)
@@TheDarksideFNothing I get what you’re saying but minimum 30FPS smooth is better than anything below that.
@@TheDarksideFNothing I'm talking about the minimum playable frame rate. People can and have played at 30fps fine. 60fps is obviously ideal and what games should be aiming for but 30fps is far from unplayable.

At first when I saw the reflections in the car, I thought "good raytracing, maybe a bit overdone how shiny it is". That was the real car :)
The cobblestone (or whatever) in game has a bout as much reflection as the car. Doesnt look good at all. The stone looks more like glass.
the person that took the real footage and mimic the game movement is gold!
I assume the game movement was mimicking the real footage.
not very smart are you lol
for true realism in the Amsterdam level you should be able to abandon the stealth mission and check into a private cabin
honestly i’d love a mode where i can just walk around the map and chill out
lol, Start Smoking week and head to the Red Light District.
So conclusion, on Series S you put 120fps mode to play in proper 60fps 😂
DF did not just imply that the ac-130 mission overstayed its welcome! What? Loved every second of that one, as always. It is such a fun and unique experience in COD. I'm glad they went all in and had a full level on it, not just hopping in and out for bits at a time.
There was a time when Battlefield impressed visually as CoD does now...
IW took that Infinite Warfare bashing personally
I really miss those times, Battlefield always raising the bar
@@tidjane2001 I miss those times too. EA and Dice destroyed Battlefield, sad...
MW2 is not impressive
That real world vs game looks really impressive. Only downside is the reflections are way too strong. Yes you get reflections on wet brick, but not nearly that perfect looking on a rough wet surface, especially so long after the rain the sun is already out.
That is my problem with raytracing in games; that the reflections are too strong.
@@machcruiser5592 these are sreen-space reflections.
The same thing can be seen in other titles. If you choose the non-raytraced performance mode in Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, wet concrete surfaces have a mirror like reflection. If you turn on raytracing, the reflections becomes dithered and looks correct for the surface. Raytracing fixes the issues you are bringing up, it doesn't introduce them.
@@mikew1080 I will agree with him though that many games do abuse ray tracing with things being set as as mirror sharp reflections when it should be rough. Ray tracing only fixes it if you're physical properties set per object is correct. It's much like how Halo Infinite originally looked like everything was just clay and their new ray tracing images don't seem to really make the image more accurate. It only has the data given to it, if the info is incomplete or inaccurate, the ray traced effects will be too.
The real life footage isn't very good quality either, pretty low contrast and the highlights are bad, kinda blown out. Looks like budget action camera footage.
@@DriveCancelDC well when they walked around the church it looked as though the sub was glinting on the lense. But it also just looked like they recorded it with an iPhone.
A little bit of game dev nitpicking here regarding the game's graphics & environments : Yes, some parts of the game look awesome. Yes, Amsterdam looks soo good ( the only thing dragging it down at first glance are the outdated NPC animations & models ) However, most of this stuff looks very good at long or middle distance, not so much when you get close to it . Especially with the assets using scanned data , like some of the stone reliefs and elements from the church, the texture resolution is very low compared to the surrounding tileable materials. There are some huge fluctuations in the texel ratio of the used textures in the game ( playing on "high " texture quality preset, had to double check it at the beginning when i encountered some pretty low-res stuff ) and I regularly found myself looking at a scanned asset with 2-3 times more blurry & low-res texture than the surrounding stone/debris asset next to it .Other thing that i think was used not well is compensating for the low-res textures of some scanned rock assets by overlaying a really intense detail normal map on top of the baked unique normal, creating a lot of visual noise. Ok rant over, sorry :P
That’s kind of been the staple of CoD’s art style since CoD 4 in 2007. They do great art, but done super quick and dirty to favor performance and development time. You almost have to admire how dedicated they are to not caring about the smaller things and always going for the most impactful “big picture”. I haven’t played CoD in years, but always appreciated how thrifty they are while achieving solid visuals that look great in motion.
Really hope we get a pc centric video, great work DF!
IW 9 engine is really shining here, offering a good experience even on the less powerful Series S
I must have watched a different video.
I adore this game. I just hope that they start addressing the technical issues on PC. The stuttering and screen glitching as well as the crashes are starting to get to me :(
If you're using Nvidia get the hotfix driver released 2 days ago.
The Nvidia hotfix helps with the graphical glitches and Infinity Ward put out a patch yesterday that addresses crashing and freezing issues. I played 6 matches with no issues, so of course, there could still be crashes but I went longer than I usually do with nothing going wrong.
I did play yesterday and still had crashes and stuff. I'll try out the hot fix and today's new update from IW and hopefully that helps
I’m running this on a 6700xt and randomly get the black blob that grows to cover the screen. First COD not on PS or Xbox and its a little annoying.
This games fucked all over the place. And my PC ain't the issue. I hope this "Nvidia hot fix" works.

The campaign was a huge letdown as well, short and boring.
Finally. The frame rate drops are very noticeable on Series S but every time I tried to find an analysis on RUclips there were only videos of scenes where almost nothing was happening and everyone was like "See perfect 60fps!!!!!"

It’s very hard to “showcase” HDR experiences, since it’s specific to the monitor or tv for each instance. It doesn’t translate over to another screen the same, even if that screen has HDR. It’s the same kind of issue with VRR/G-Sync. You can’t really show it, other than in real life in the same room.
@@itsd0nk I thought HDR is supposed to be some kind of tone mapping or hash table lookup type. Like it will be mastered and given values according to the producer and their screen with it's own tone mapping. Therefore, the output to each viewer would be scaled according to their monitor and as long as their monitor's tone mapping is not broken it will be seen in the same contrast ratio scaled down/up according to the monitor.

Right guys? It's a fkn crime that xbox pushed this. I get that they were really behind on market share and wanted to gain a lot of new players mainly kids and people who couldn't afford 200 more for the actual next gen consoles. But they lied and cheated while doing so. They promised a console that would preform and look the same only power res.
We haven't seen it do that with a single fkn game yet ffs. Performance is always abysmal. Often worse than Xbox one x because it HAS to look similar to the series x version aside from resolution eventhough it obviously can't handle it.
Yeah, the amount of defending for that console is annoying
I dont care that it exist, but dont mandate it for all devs making a game for xbox
@@ddp5406 The sad part is the people defending it remind me of the console war kids during the time leading up to the PS4/xbox1 release. They all have these poorly written, poorly spelled comments calling PS owners names even though this isn't a thing most ps owners know or care about. They all obsessively defend their console trying to prove how good it is with screenshots even though that doesn't change the performance and gfx and the fact that it performs far below promises.
They also dont seem to realise. Forcing Xbox to buckle on the series S would likely end up giving them free upgrades to Xbox series X. Which I wholeheartedly think they deserve and would support.
But it's just kids thinking they have to defend something because they are 'part of that group' or think that large companies are their bff and that they need to pick sides. And the peope who want to justify their sale and try to mitigate their buyers remorse by coping like that.
I genuinely think that series S owners got scammed and lied too. And the faster they realise this the beter it is. You can still be happy with what you got. But it's not what they promised you'd get, why would you defend a company for lying?
I don't understand brand loyalty. I loved my 360. Switched to PS4 without even a second of thought when I saw the always on, Kinect tv console thing they were trying to sell. That's how WE gamers saved XBOX. That's how Xbox realised they couldn't screw with us. That's how they changed and became a much better console company today.
If er all just defended Xbox physical games wouldn't exist today. Every game would be always on. Rvrry console woulfd come with a camera spying on you, listening and checking if you're watching the ads. They even wanted to use Kinect to stop people from watching Netflix together!
Don't allow companies to get away with stuff. Kids these days are getting worse and worse with how they stand their favorite brands
I know the series s gets a lot of criticism, but damn, it really does hold up well for the price.

How is input latency between platforms? Is it lower on Xbox due to an apparent absence of VSync? Or is VSync also present on Xbox but simply fails to prevent tearing whilst adding latency?
I'm wondering the same thing. It would be good to understand why VSYNC was implemented on the PS5 version, but not on the XBOX version of the game.
Thoroughly enjoyed this year's campaign. I know it's all just by the numbers macho nonsense but it's good fun. The graphics are incredible on next gen. The lighting model they use is as good as it gets without Ray tracing.

Why pass on it if it looks fun to play? Just don’t play the multiplayer?
@@fensoxx It's too expensive for a few hours of entertainment. Also it's a pity that older Call of Duty games are still quite expensive
@@fensoxx it’s too expensive for the single player alone. They should do something like the old MW2 campaign remastered, that also excluded any form of multiplayer. Or they could release campaign bundles, like the single player content of WWII and Vanguard bundled. Or the MW I & II reboots bundled. For the record this is not COD hate or something, I do like the campaigns a lot. And Halo Infinite is just the same, no way I’ll pay that full price for just the campaign (since MP is F2P anyway).
There is way, WAY too much focus on multiplayer, battle royals and battle passes in AAA FPS games the last couple of years. Singleplayer fans get no love and get all the MP shoved down their throat. In MW 2019 I can’t even uninstall / remove that friggin Warzone crap from my Xbox (which takes a lot of GBs). Meanwhile they do give the option to uninstall everything else… 🙄
@@Breyzipp I do agree on that. A campaign only bundle deal would be amazing. I would probably buy that too.
I guess the truth is they don't really care. They just make too much money on their multiplayer.
@@Breyzipp I see. I wasn’t asking that in a flip way btw, I was curious. I also didn’t realize that the game is $70. I agree with you now… not worth $70 for a 12 hour campaign when I also don’t like multiplayer. Which sucks because I bet I’d like the campaign. Last good fps campaign was Sniper Elite 5. Give that a go if you’re looking for a good time that’s not $70. Especially with a pal in co-op.
