I still have my air 2. Looking at the mavic 3 classic as that's a real upgrade a 3s isn't really an upgrade to be honest for a huge amount of reasons like no variable aperature, true 20mp sensor that has better colors. @CoastalDrone I'm a track coach so having a drone that can film 4k 120 is clutch when it comes to analyzing footage. Makes it far more convenient and safer than riding my bike and holding $4000 with one arm trying to keep up with the athletes
This past weekend I filmed a swim meet and the difference between 60fps and 120fps is pretty obvious. Even with some of the fashion shows that I've done, most are 60fps but I did one on the beach a couple months ago where i experimented with 120fps since it was plenty of light and it was pretty sweet. If i could afford something that could film 4k 240fps I would pull the trigger.

I also will be sticking to my original Mavic 3 and Mini 3 Pro combo. One of the things you did not mention is Post Processing software improvements. Frankly AI assisted post processing software is outpacing the minimal hardware improvements that DJI can bring to the table yearly. The cost benefits of simply using software to improve image quality to my mind far outweighs the hardware depreciation on these Drones which is worse than ever now that DJI keep making kit redundant almost as quickly as they are sold. Also, software is more versatile as it can help improve non-flying camera footage just as efficiently, cheaper than the losses incurred with hardware depreciation.
Just seems to make more financial sense to me. Granted I love the techy gleaming new buttons that promise the world, but I think if one really needs to rely on obstacle avoidance more than the original Mavic 3 is capable of, perhaps flying drones is not suitable in the first place.
I'm a huge DJI fan, I have a fair bit of their kit. Love them, BUT, they don't seem to care about looking after the financial resale value of perfectly capable, low mileage kit that might only be a year or so old. Cheapens the product and makes me feel like some kind of 'Cash-Cow' they want to milk too frequently.

I haven't seen anyone now talking about the night mode. The Air3S have this and that, it's good in low light, but the Air3 has the night mode, which for me is amazing! Is the low light capabilities of the Air3S better than the Air3 in night mode? 🤔🤔 I'm just curious, that's all, I'm not going to buy it either. I love my Air3.

Thanks for the great resume. DJI have said the 50MP is native 50MP and not through QBF Technology like the 12/48MP Sensor. Really like your rational thinking. It's true, many are fixated on new technology because it's new and cool without thinking about its added benefits and usage. For me the 3.2um pixel size, 50MP sensor is a big plus for survey work and zooming into 3D Models. I won't be buying one though as for my work, the Mini series gives me of course much more practical flying opportunities. If money wasn't an issue, sure, I would definitely buy. 😊

Technically, the Mavic 3 Classic 4/3 sensor *should* better than the Air 3S sensor, but that's not accounting for image processing improvements and the fact the new sensor is a stacked backside-illuminated sensor as far as we understand. You'd want to compare raw DNG files from both in similar situations, but again, at the end of the day, I bet you'd have a hard time telling unless you're blowing the images up to huge prints.

I just bought one (upgrading from Mavic Pro 2) and am excited for the 70m lens and longer flight times. Probably wouldn't have upgraded though if I already had the Mavic 3 or Air 3 so this is definitely a very reasonable take.I'll be interested to see the Mavic 4, but it seems they just keep making them bigger and bigger which I don't love.
That 70m lens will allow us to get closer in filming shots of New Orleans 2nd line parades without having the drone close to or above the people (which is technically illegal I think)....so in our case at least, having a smaller drone with a 70m lens option and still have a larger wide angle sensor like the Mavic Pro 2 did was just what I was looking for! Only thing I will miss is that variable aperture. Hope they bring it into the next iteration.

The DJI Air 3S RC2 Fly More Combo maybe a good deal, but we have to remember that when the battery need replacing, YOU the customer can NOT buy and fit the battery yourself. You have to send away your RC2 controller to have DJI replace the battery and I heard the cost is around £100 plus and take around one month, so NO controller for a month or so and another £100+. That's why I will NOT be buying the new air3s.. come-on dji allow customers to fit/replace old RC2 controller battery with new ones they can buy from you. BUT NO youtuber / dji influencer seem to mention this problem and side step the issue

  • @allegriach

I completely agree with this opinion. Actually, I would recommend the Mavic 3 Classic instead of the Air 3S. HOWEVER: It is no longer available (at least according to the current information on the DJI website). Nevertheless, it is still likely available in the inventory of some retailers. I myself fly with a Mavic 3 and a Mini 3 Pro. I especially enjoy flying the Mavic 3, as for me, in Europe, it’s essentially like having a Mavic 3 Pro with C-class certification. Although it might sound unlikely, I can actually fly my Mavic 3 almost like I do with my Mini 3 Pro. The only difference is that I should avoid flying over uninvolved people. It's not forbidden, but I need to minimize it as much as possible. These are pretty good flight conditions! The advantage here, of course, is that older drones are also available on the second-hand market. Especially as a hobby drone pilot, you have plenty of time to scout the market. It’s very common for someone to give up their hobby after just one year. The initial fascination fades, and the additional editing, sound design, and stitching can be time-consuming, and the final result doesn’t always meet expectations. For this reason, you can find some very good used drones. However, you do need to be cautious of scammers.

I'm not sure I agree 100% with your statement regarding the need for ND filters. I'd love to have a variable aperture and mechanical shutter on camera drones as I did when I owned Phantom 4 Prods, but that drone isn't made anymore and those 2 features will now cost somewhere around $3,500-$4,000 USD if you want them. If shooting video, yeah I get it. If shooting stills, and aren't concerned about DOF, the fixed aperture lens seems to do the job, at least the one that I have for it. I typically shoot daytime and 5 frames aeb/hdr, bump the iso up to 200 if it's really windy. to eliminate most if not all of the drone or gimbal shake. I haven had any real problems with dynamic range. I sold off my old gear, and unfortunately don't require an Inspire 3 or a Mavic 3 Enterprise. I wish i did

Hopefully I can add some value to this video as it was good but maybe missed a few things from a genuine drone user. I have had many drones and currently have found myself with an Air2S and M3P with the RC1 controller which is brilliant by the way!!
Why have I not upgraded. Its the RC that has stopped me. I love the RC1 but it doesn't work with the newer drones, so I am actually stuck having to upgrade both drones AND the RC to keep standing still. For me thats just too big an ask and not enough to overcome the older features of the Air 2S and M3P.
Also I would say that, whiost the Mini series is probebly the best all rounder, the biggest reason for me to have the Air series is the wind conditions. The Mini drones may shoot g"as good" vbideo in 90% of the conditions, but when you account for wind they struggle. I have lost a lot of quality video using the M3P when i find the drone just isn;t stable enough and the video stability is compromised. So whilst i get the talk about the CCD and the low light conditions. In the real world it's actually wind conditions that have seen me use the Air2S a lot, I also get better battery out of that drone too.
I think the M4P and the Air3S are probably a big enough step now to upgrade both drones and renew the insurance!! But in my view DJI would have had my business already if they had not constantly updted so much in so little time. They will suffer the same fate os the smartphone industry where people are no longer buying phones every 12 months, but nearer to 36 now. We are seeing the same strategy being adopted by DJI where they use software features to be more of the reason to upgrade, but they peeve off existing users who don;t get the features on their existing drones when in fact there's no hardware reason they couldn't.

As a photographer, videomaker and traveller I would rater wait for AIR 4 , 3 series are nonsense for me , they are both bulky and heavy . Flight time on 2S is plenty - 30minutes , who is recording nonstop 1 scene longer than 1-2 minutes ? And then you have 2 spare batteries to make your job done withing 1 and half hour . Are you flighing often in the forest and do you need better obstracle sensors? Then camera in 3 and 3S with two lenses at 4K while with 2S we have 5.4K and can be cropped to zoom without loosing quality . Even at 50% crop you can always increase resolution by few clicks in Topaz software up to 8 times. Of course new 3S has some great futures but I can live without them and carry my 2S combo set with camera gear anywhere without taking a porter . Finally look at the price of 2S and ask yourself why is still not cheap on its age and hard to buy it for good price. The answer is simple - because is the best seller of DJI since last 5 years.

I don’t know what DJI has done with their encoders and algorithms to allow for this with a lower bitrate but it’s like magic.
