For the first story, the reason why it's written like an epic novel is because he his highly educated and has nothing but time on his hands. This story reminds me of the guy who outsourced his own job to india. If it were me, i would work a free lance side job. Not on anyone's payroll and something I could drop when someone actually needed me. That way i would always look busy and make extra money.
I wrote this before I realized this was the only story! Jesus Sam! When John's gone, you jump in the deep end from the high board and freaking nail it. Well done.
this was fucking incredible. clearly he should write a book at his office. he has quite a knack for writing, and it’d certainly keep him busy writing. i wanna read more of his stuff!
This was the best story I’ve heard in a while. This man is both incredibly quick on his feet and very lucky. Like he was both terrified and unwilling to make moves without a beer and then Boom! Comes up with a resolution on the spot. 😂 I burst out laughing so many times, in shock.
This was awesome!!! Years ago I managed to plan my work such that I had a 'do nothing week' every month. My cubicle was in a corner of the building that no one came to. Like this guy, I spent that time on internet forums. I had that job for 3 years. When I had to train my replacement I showed her my schedule and said: If you follow this, you'll have nothing to do the third week of every month. She was floored.
That can be dangerous depending on the country (or states) In some country’s that can get you in trouble with the IRS And in others jobs are required to communicate so you get your PTO at the same time or that you don’t overwork yourself
Just sat here, at my desk (work from home,) and listened to this entire story. Absolutely beautiful. Well written, I love that this video was so long! I was a semi-forgotten work from home medical coder myself for a while. Clock in, do roughly 2-3 hours of work a day, then leave a rock on my keyboard to keep it from going idle. Everyone thought I was oh so busy for about 15 months. A lot of house cleaning was done, comics were read, and anime was watched during that time. Now? That's a different story. I've added 2 more specialties to my workload and a new queue for denied charges to sift through, so my days range wildly from jam-packed to doing absolutely nothing. I've also upgraded my rock to a jar of baby food. A little nervous, tho, since I'm the only person in our entire in-house coder pool that can do anesthesia. Over 100 of us, and only 1 does anesthesia? No pressure, guys! We are about to bring in more hospitals to our work flow, and management is scrambling to me for answers. I have none. I'm just the coder. There is a meeting set for tomorrow morning with the higher-ups about this new addition and I'm somewhere between horrified and honored. All I can bring to the table is my little spreadsheet template and panic. Idk how the logistics work, I just code what's on the report. I don't ask where it comes from - it just appears, I translate, then send off my little daily spreadsheet for someone else to mess with. I hope those little spreadsheets are being treated well...
@@jesystar it wasn't too hard :) I went thru Penn Foster for the prep course and then tested thru AAPC for the CPC certification. AAPC also offers their own courses - it is more expensive with them but it cuts out all the bs fluff that Penn Foster has and you finish in like half the time compared to Penn Foster. Learning it all was WAY harder than actually doing it so if you can get thru the course and pass with that cert, you're good to go. If you also wanna go that route and be a medical coder, then I do recommend the AAPC courses since they give CEU'S towards keeping your cert active with their courses. When I interviewed for this position, they asked why they should hire a brand new coder, and I told them "Since I've never done this before, you won't have to untrain any bad workflow habits that I would have gotten from another healthcare system. You can train me exactly how you want since I'm a blank slate." they ate that right up 😏

This was a fun collection of stories from OP. I'd love to read a book with this whole story, hoping that OP got to retire doing what he's been doing all along.
I absolutely loved hearing this story!! I have never been so invested, I kept wanting to hear more and more! I was on the edge of my seat each time he was almost found out! I have so many questions though… how long did he work at the company? Is he still there? Did he retire? We need an update 😂😅😫
I'm listening to the first story going wow! I wish I could have his job and do nothing...come to find out I DO HAVE HIS JOB! I work in safety! I literally laughed all the way home from work.
Holy shit this was a masterpiece of a story! Loved it so much. The writing was great but obviously you were the best one to read 😂 I didn't even realize how long it was until it was over and I saw how long i was listening 🤣
I was so invested in OP's story😂 very well written. I was genuinely impressed because OP was doing corporate/mental gymnastics throughout the story. Great work OP!
Of course I miss John, but this forgotten worker story was so mind boggling, that I kind of forgot and got completely swept away by the story you read.
I can see this happening. I worked for a company that was bought by another company. Operations were being moved to another state . The receptionist and I had nothing to do for the two months they were emptying the office. We had to be there to let people in and lock up at the end of the day. It was during the O J Simpson trial so we watched TV all day. Crazy!
14:13 oh. my. god. i hate the editor so much, i was wearing headphones and thought someone in my house was being murdered. my heart is PUMPING. Love the vid, but whyyy
This guy is a very eloquent storyteller, but you also are a great reader. It's hard to read another's words with a flow that's neither to fast or too slow. Great job and you have a new fan!!
We miss John BUT you did well on this video solo! Always a treat to listen to this show! I C U! Sam's 2 line poem:- People you once knew walk by without a clue.
Ok, so I work from home. I'm in IT and provide remote support for various companies during the "Night Shift". I answer the phone IF it rings and check a cpl websites throughout the night. I'm paid nearly $30/hr to hang out in my PJs all night watching youtube, scrolling reddit, and playing games. For example, I received all of 4 calls in the month of October. I'm an internal employee so I get all the extra goodies that come with that. It's pretty chill and I get to be home with my family and my pets as much as I want. BEST JOB EVER!
Came from night shift and laid down in bed to sleep. Clicked this to have a background noise, didn't notice the length of the video. One hour later, still wide awake, totally invested. 😅
I started a new job at this company where the person training me remotely forgot about me a lot and I ended up doing pretty much nothing for a solid week. Literally had to bag people for something to do.
I work data entry for a health insurance company. My department is only busy for enrollment so oct-feb, and may-july. We'll get small reports to process, but often have to "review" already processed reports or followup on research. If they let any of us go we'd have to hite and train someone for the spot... there are only 4 of us on the team so we try to stagger vacations in the quiet times. We do have self learning classes, so I'm currently working through the Microsoft certification class for Excell during my slow times when not browsing reddit or RUclips.
I work in a corporate office that I could never do this in. They watch everything, your punches in and out, your adherence to see you on calls and how long you’re on them. Your bonuses are literally based on numbers. This definitely isn’t normal and has to be a pretty disorganized company.
😂 The managers get a special globe? What company is this? I must earn one of these special awards of corporate excellence! 🤣 Actually when I was little, I had a mini globe that opened up to mini bottles of perfumes from around the world. It was supposed to mimic how old offices & home offices of businessmen were actually secret bars, with various liquors inside. The top half just unscrews from the bottom half like a jar or cup lid.
I wasn’t forgotten, but we had a very blissfully-slow period after COVID… most employees jumped ship or the temps were let go, but I was signed on full-time about five months before the lockdown, so I stayed on. They tried to give me something to do, and I had to basically do quality-checks on documents read by our OCR software. There was nobody else in the office, and I got to watch lots of videos and take it easy… I work in a production-type job, so it went from “keep your numbers up or there’ll be hell to pay” to not really having to record numbers, or rush through the work, or do much of anything. Then we hit our busy season and I got the most insane project I’ve ever worked on in the four years that I’ve been here, that made everyone from the newest temp to the president of the company tear their hair out, but it was a fun little break in the midst of what felt like the end of the world 😄
To answer the question about the meetings: in my office we have “spirit squad” meetings which are solely for planning how a certain group is going to make the office festive for the next holiday. Employee appreciation meetings to discuss what we are going to do for the managers, admins, etc. I’ve known of potluck meetings which were made up to discuss what theme the next potluck should be. My first month at my job was in December and before xmas we had a mini 20 minute long meeting to do a white elephant gift exchange and discuss the rules. Then discuss when we were going to eat since some of us were leaving early. I got lucky with my corporate office
If I was in the situation of the first OP id look either for a side job i could do in office or id use the time to learn new things, perhaps a course or learn to draw better.
Working as a manager in a gas station truck stop I never even get a break till I clock out but props to the man dealing with corporate that long lol I could never ❤ ps I love all you guys. I listen every night till I fall asleep. 😊
I used to work for a US Health Insurance company where I was in Customer service, but also processed claims. I was on a dedicated team which means that I only took calls for a certain company and rarely took any other group's phone calls. I almost always sat for an hour between calls, but there were many days where it was 3 or 4 calls a day. I would maybe work for an hour out of the whole day. I got a lot of reading done during those times. Then I got promoted to a leadership team. LOL!

I like the touch that he remembered that smartphones are not a thing, but still couldn't imagine that reddit didn't exist yet.
A world without reddit is not a world worth living in
I mean, not everyone uses reddit. Heck I used SA forums well before I ever bothered with reddit.
Hmmm, couldn't be that he was writing his story on Reddit years after it happened, just for the sake of telling that amazing saga?

Story #1: DO NOT tempt fate. Get a side gig, in case they find you out!
That can be dangerous depending on the country (or states)
In some country’s that can get you in trouble with the IRS
And in others jobs are required to communicate so you get your PTO at the same time or that you don’t overwork yourself
Doesn't need a side gig, just savings and investments.
