2020 BMW Z4 30i review - Sports Car or GT?

  • I drive the new BMW Z4 with the mid-range engine, the 258 horsepower 30i four-cylinder turbo. The automaker says this new model is sportier and more focused than the car it replaces, but what is it really: a GT or a true sports car?
    Oh, and the previous-gen Z4 was called the E89, not G89 (whoops!) and it was actually the only Z4 with a folding hardtop. The first Z4, the E85 also had a folding soft top and it was also available as the E86 coupe with a fixed top.

      I was actually expecting the engine bay mic to pick up more of the turbo whistle which sounded like it was louder when you were in the car. Maybe it was being pumped in through the speakers :D

      @@OneTireFire Thank you! Ordered the S-Drive 3.0i, Alpine White, Magma Red Seats, M-Sports with Ambient Lighting. :) As much as my pride wanted the M4.0i badge, I just couldn't justify the price increase for horsepower that wasn't necessary. 3.0i has some serious punch to it. I've driven both, the 4.0i made my jibbly bits jiggle a little too much for my liking, but it sure did put a smile on my face. Drove both in comfort mode. Test drove the 3.0i and felt that it was smoother while still just being incredibly fun.

      @@SoA-Horseman very nice spec. i think the red seats work well with the white exterior. don’t feel bad about not getting the bigger engine. The car is lighter and more nimble with the 2-liter

    What would be more refined for long trips. This or the cayman?

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  4 месяца назад +1

      Well, the Cayman is a fixed hardtop model, so it should be better when it comes to wind noise and isolating you from the outside world. However, I think that in terms of suspension comfort, the Z4 is the better car. If you were thinking of the soft-top Boxster, then the Z4 is better overall when it comes to refinement,

    In every other review of this car you can hear the exhaust popping on overrun, what's missing here ? Where you driving in comfort mode ?

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  3 года назад +1

      Giuseppe Rocchi I certainly did not drive it in Comfort mode :D The car did make the occasional crackle and pop on thr overrun, but in my experience, this didn’t happen every time you lifted off the gas. I think I got it to make the sound like 5 times over the four days I had the car for. I was actually surprised myself as my expectations were, like yours, set by watching other videos. Maybe the popping is more common for the M40i model

      Thank you Andrei, now I hope there was something wrong with your car, because I have ordered one and I would very disappointed if they have made changes to comply with some stupid new regulations.

      @@giusepperocchi2979 Well, I'm sure it can be coded in if you really want it, although I imagine that will affect the warranty.

    GT!
    Has never been as sportscar.
    Not that tath's a bad thing.
    It's just managing expectations.
    I have the previous E89 Z4 35is. Loads of torque and power.
    But too heavvy and to soft and too vague for a sportcar.
    But it makes for a pefect GT / power cruiser.
    Just my 2ct.

      The new Z4 is quite a bit sportier than the E89, though. It feels lighter and more eager to turn. You can also get it with a Toyota badge and a coupe body and let me tell you that car is no grand tourer 😁

      That's what I wanted to hear....some years ago, when I test drove a 203i xDrive back to back with a 240i xDrive, I came to the same conclusion and purchased the 230i xDrive. It felt more nimble and responsive to me....and saved a considerable amount of dollars.@@OneTireFire
