Reminds me of the story of Saturn the alligator, he lived in a zoo in Berlin, but was lost during the bombings in WW2. Sometime after the war, soldiers miraculously found him alive and sent him to a zoo in Moscow, where he lived a peaceful life for decades. However, during the fall of the Soviet Union, tanks rolled in the streets to keep order, and zookeepers reported the noise greatly distressed Saturn, because even decades later, he still found the sound of tanks stressful due to his memories of WW2! And he lived to be over 90 years old, which just goes to show how incredible crocodilians are.

A while ago, I remember reading a story about a man who rescued a crocodile who'd been shot in the head, and the two developed a bond. It really seemed like the crocodile actually liked the guy, despite all you hear about reptiles being fundamentally unable to feel love, though the man himself was unsure whether all crocodiles were actually like that, or whether that one was potentially special due to brain damage.
The crocodile died since then, unfortunately, but sometimes I wonder how much of what we know about animals is fact, and how much is just theory. I mean, a century ago, people thought dogs had no feelings. There's plenty in science that presented as facts when really, the truth is that nobody knows for sure.

Something about intelligence that a lot of people don't realize is that even if a creature lacks higher reasoning ability due to brain structure, the structures and abilities that they do have are often superb.
Think for example of how perceptive birds' vision and sense of direction are compared to a human's. Birds often all look the same to a human but they can tell each other apart, and can intuitively sense their location. In some ways people are very stupid compared to some animals but other ways are of course not.

@@returntonature8773 Saltwater crocs generally travel up into freshwater to breed, but will move downriver at other times. They can't process saltwater when they're young, that's something they develop as they mature, so you'll find the smaller crocs stay in freshwater billabongs & creeks, while the big ones will be more common closer to the sea. That's why they're also called estuarine crocodiles, because they primarily live in the estuarine portion of the rivers as adults. You'll sometimes see them leave the rivers & enter the ocean itself, but not that often because they can't really hunt in the ocean. Of course, like OP says you can still find very big crocs in pure freshwater, it's just not as common.
