This is the problem with American basketball culture. Narcissism. Arrogance. Selfishness. Uplifting egos, and media aiding it. Trying to look cool. Embarrassing opponents. It’s bad sportsmanship. American basketball culture had much more maturity and humbleness in the 90s and earlier. European basketball culture, or other places outside USA might be better. Yes, highlight culture is ruining the game.
Highlights are great yeah, but sometimes just putting everything you have into the game shows, and its even more impressive. Like Delly guarding Steph, the sheer effort that you can see that man put is way more impressive than some crazy dunk or shot from 35 feet. That attitude is what makes someone great I think. Like, you can't be a great player if all you can do is a flashy trick, you need to have good offense, good defense, basketball iq and a ton of other things. Great video highlighting all this.
7:42...🤣😂🤣 Hmm... I'm not so sure that it is "highlight culture" that is ruining basketball. It is the elements *surrounding* the highlight culture that is ruining basketball. More specifically, social media. Now, let that sink in for a while, then think about it again while visiting your favorite social media basketball topic.
It is funny because when I was young, I didn't care if my team win or lose, I only cared about to make a top 10 highlight play. And my favourite players were highlight makers. But when I grew up, I realized that the only goal is winning. Now I just make boring but efficient plays which lead my team to victory. The problem is that young generation doesn't care about defense and ball movement. Only highlights make them love the game. And it is OK
you know what i mean when europe game is 40min overtime??? defending hard, blocking for every ball, intense, running your lungs out. I only see that in NBA overtime. first showtime, and then very occasionally an overtime, where suddenly there is tactical play, plays are followed, players play hard defense. The first 40 minutes of the NBA are pathetic for many Europeans. 1billion show
We all love highlights, they're something that basketball fans like about the sports, unlike others. But still, the priority should always be win and respect the sport
In a nutshell, and without a trace of hyperbole, I blame LeBron. This is what happens when the face of your league (and every kid's favorite highlight machine) is a narcissistic tryhard who promotes a competitive mentality of instant gratification, and can't wait to tell you how great you're supposed to think he is. Kids be like "oh, that's what being an adult is."
“Kobe’s god-given athleticism…” Just stop superstitious phrases and cliches like that. There’s no evidence that anyone’s athleticism is god-given. Athleticism is given by nature, genes, biological factors.

Absolutely it is... teaching little kids to act like little scumbags makes me sick to see.
You can't ruin a game. You can ruin people by setting a bad example.
I miss 80s and 90s basketball. You could actually Bill Lambier someone and not get kicked out.

It’s a saying, it’s not that deep. You’ll be okay 👍
I actually talked to god and he told me that he gave Kobe some of the best athleticism that you can give a human
