I've had this tab book for 30 frikkin years, and could never figure out exactly how to play the main riff. There's no substitute for an actual human teacher...even if he is online! Thanks for a great lesson!
You're welcome! I'm really glad I could help you out. Some tabs are frustrating for sure. I must say though that the Kill 'Em All tab book is one of the more accurate that I've seen. It's actually pretty good.
Im still learning how to play the guitar i still dont know what chords are what but with lil bit of google and this video together it makes learning the song so much easier 😂
Wow this song has a lot going on in it! You are really a great teacher Tim! Such a good breakdown of the riffs in this song! Very impressive teaching style my friend! Thanks for all your hard work!
I've been trying to learn how to play the main riff of this song for something like 20 years! Now it's seems I've found the right teacher :) Thanks a lot for that top quality lesson!! I may jump into the lead fills now :D Cheers
Not sure if it's different on the record but the heavy part of the interlude that sounds like This Was My Life when they play it live they use straight power chords, the chromatic descending from G part. Great video of them playing it with Mustaine that you can see clearly
Haha, yeah, I came across that footage too when I was researching the song. If you watch Hetfield he starts off playing it the way that I show but he realizes that Mustaine is playing it differently and adjusts what he's doing. I think that Mustaine is actually playing it differently to what Metallica usually does. At any rate, the way that I show it is the way it is on the album and I saw enough live footage of them playing it that way that I felt comfortable not bringing up the power chord variation. Good eyes man! Thanks for watching!
@@TimHolman I just wasn't sure about the album as I haven't heard it in a day or two haha, I think straight 5ths was probably the way it was written hence Dave playing it that way and they probably changed it after he left juat slightly to give it a more menacing vibe. I have no evidence just my opinion Either way the lead after the first chorus is really a major run? I was trying to figure it out last night and couldn't because minor made more sense which is what I kept trying to do and just made my own lick. Could it be the speed(and harmonic minor being all over the album) that's tricking my ear? I've been playing for about 14 years so it's strange to me that it fooled me if it's truly a major run
@@Ayyem93 The run is actually the Mixolydian scale. It has a flat 7 but has the raised 6th and major 3rd. I actually had a segment talking about the lick but cut it in the final edit due to length and not wanting to confuse people. But yes, it is an odd choice of scale in this kind of music.
@@TimHolman That makes sense, I never traveled into theory much nor learned any modes. It's strange how that particular run sounds good at tempo but when slowing it down it seems like it wouldn't fit. I also realized I goofed and said harmonic minor dominates the album when I meant to say minor pentatonic. To you knowledge are there other songs on it that Kirk chose an interesting scale like this? I always thought it was a fusion of regular minor scales and minor pentatonic scales
Kirk really likes to play with Dorian. He regularly includes the raised 6th in his solos. For instance if the song's in E minor he'll play a C#. Other than Dorian another really obvious use of a scale that sticks in my mind is Phrygian Dominant in Eye of the Beholder. But on Kill Em All, besides minor pentatonic there are only Dorian moments that I can think of and nothing else. The softer section in The Four Horsemen includes the raised sixth and there is a three note per string run in the Phantom Lord solo that is the Dorian scale.

Where's the descending solo run after the first chorus???

What tuning is used on this song?
It's in standard
😎🤟
Perhaps Whiplash sometime since some of the lessons online are incorrect.
I'll tackle that one soon. I've got Seek and Destroy coming then I'll look into Whiplash for you. 👍🔥
@@TimHolman seek and destroy is great it has lots of parts and the end outro breakdown is so heavy especially for there first album.
Yeah, it was my favorite when I was a kid. I would listen to the whole album looking forward to the ending of Seek and Destroy.
Anyone else having huge issues with getting the rhythm of the main hook riff sounding right?

When you learn one solo from Kill Em all you can probably play em all, they're all made up of the same 5 licks lol
Wow, metal using the strumming style!??
Yes, they don't always use strict downpicking. The main riff in this song has up strokes in it. 🔥🤘

Great! Subb...
Thank you! 👍🔥
Sound is ripping through your ears, the deafening sound of metal nears
Dave write this riff
fuck picking patterns.. just play it with downstrokes :D
