The Yes Album, Fragile & Close To The Edge have been my favourite Yes albums ever since I first heard them back in the early 70s when I was a teenager. To me, now in my early 60s, they still represent the pinnacle of musical creativity and brilliance. It's great that you've correctly analysed this wonderful opening riff and broken it down into easily digestible licks that any reasonably competent guitarist can play. I'd never realised that what seemed to me to be utterly original, weird and angular playing was so blues-and-funk-derived
Thank you so much. I am obsessed with learning to play this intro using synthesized guitar on keyboard (Orange tree Samples) - now don't laugh at me, I'm not expecting to emulate a guitar, but to create something musically interesting. On the 2nd beat when you lift off the string, there is almost like a grace note thing happening, I will try to emulate that. Helps to see the real thing. If I had only 1 album for eternity, it would be Close to the Edge.
I was privileged enough to get the jam with this guy down in Virginia during a family BBQ. I would love to sit down and get some lessons from this guy. #damngoodtime
Hi, thanks a lot for this great tutorial. Yes are one of my favorite band and Steve is of course the most interesting guitarist in the 70s. I am starting to learn guitar, at 53 and this is something I'd always liked to play. Best wishes for your channel
All good except the last double-stop. Instead the 12th fret on the high E, he's playing on the 14th fret. And instead of the 14th fret on the B string he's playing on the 17th fret...and he slides from the 14th to the 15th and back to the 14th on the high E string (on the intro).
Thanks 👍 for the "breakdown" Did you learn these riffs through the arduous task of being so blessed by GOD, 🤣😂 To LISTEN and "play by ear" and HIS Divine GIFT to actually HEAR and physically articulate-that which I believe is Indelibly etched into the concious memory?
This is probably the best intro in pop music history
This isn't pop.
no way you just called Yes! "pop"
Progressive Rock
