  • *I've since written a book about my IBS story - and how I took back control from my digestive symptoms. Read more here: www.amazon.co.... *
I think it's so important to banish the stigma surrounding IBS and digestive conditions and start creating a reassuring dialogue online. IBS can be so isolating and I know I struggled throughout school, thinking I was alone in my symptoms and how greatly it affected me. I know if I was a 14-year-old, I'd find a video like this reassuring.
I have set up a Facebook group as this video received more a response than I expected and I thought it would be a nice opportunity to support one another and feel more like a community. Plus I get asked a lot of questions and so hopefully I'll be able to answer them all in the group! You can join it here: / 1874156746130269
AD | This includes paid for promotion in some form but the entire video is driven by me and not a brand message.
I have been offered vast sums of money to promote various IBS medications in the past, however I feel very lucky to be in the position I am in, connecting with IBS sufferers all over the world and raising awareness of digestive disorders, so I vehemently oppose to promoting something (paid or not paid) if it doesn't genuinely work for me. Please be rest assured I'm not being sponsored to say something false, as I know all too well how hideous the symptoms can be - and I wouldn't ever suggest a product has worked, if I hadn't put it through its paces personally.

This video received much more of a response than I expected. I've since published a book on how I manage my IBS symptoms and control them on a daily basis (because a video or blog post didn't quite do the 10 years of trial and error justice) - if you'd like to check it out, the link for my book is here: www.amazon.co.uk/Tummy-Tied-not-glamorous-guide/dp/1913036642/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=tummy+tied&qid=1555683277&s=gateway&sr=8-1

I'm 16 and going through this, and especially the anxiety will trigger my IBS to the point where I'm scared to go on trips and even go hangout with friends because I don't know if there will be a bathroom around. Many of my family members and friends don't understand how badly it effects me and I agree it's hard to talk to people and even my gastroenterologist. I'm taking probiotics and anti depressants, but I wish I could find something to work quickly because it effects my everyday life. I'm embarrassed to go on dates with boys and go to school and to just leave the house. So thank you for talking about this and being so reassuring that I'm not alone and I can manage it with work and trial and error

Hi Olivia, I'm so sorry to hear you've been suffering with your IBS symptoms. It's honestly so hard navigating the teenage years anyway, let alone with IBS too - so give yourself lots of credit, because you're doing an AMAZING job! 😘 One really annoying thing about IBS is there is no immediate quick fix and I know for me personally, I lost faith in medication the more of them I tried. So eventually I did lots of research of my own and decided to come off all my current medication and see if changing up my diet helped. I have to say this was by far the biggest 'quick fix' because almost overnight my symptoms eased up and I wished I'd tried it sooner. There is a test you can have done to find your trigger foods but a cheaper way of doing it is to keep a food diary. The doctor recommended I did this for years and I half did it - but if you keep a really detailed food diary (about 2-3weeks worth), write exactly what you ate, drank and how much. Then also write how your tummy was at the start, middle and end of the day. Within a week, you start to see patterns and it's so eye-opening. I promise it's worth trying, dairy was a MASSIVE trigger for me and while I still have IBS, it's no-where near as bad as it was! Hope you get some relief soon, sending lots of love!

same, i think I know al lthe bathrooms in Sydney... is just frustrating... can't go anywhere without where I will find a bathroom... when to the doctor and he said it was due to stress caused years ago and now ( I'm from spain but i live in australia since 3 years and I pay everything by myself so that gives me a lot of pressure i guess ) what I found that works for me to calm my gut is:
      -mint
      - try to not stress
      - don't eat too much
-be careful with carbs and more if they are processed foods ( like pizza, meatballs, etc)
      - boiled rice makes me no bloated but normal white rice does ( sushi, etc)

Olivia Garrison You could possibly try a at home enema kit.If you need to go anywhere you just use it an hour before you leave the house and it cleans out your colon so you won't need to worry about needing to go .I'm currently the same age as you and although it is a challenge its really helped me so far.

The more important thing though is it should be illegal to tell kids they can't go to the toilet in class. Over the past few weeks I've had to go to toilet in work every 2 hours and if I was in school I'd be put in isolation or some other form of punishment and that's ridiculous.

Being in quiet environments like a classroom with people surrounding you makes me so terrified. I get so stressed and panicky about people possibly hearing my stomach movements, my heart starts racing, I sweat, my face heats up. Then of course the anxiety makes the pain MUCH worse. I just wish we didn’t have to work in silence.

Michelle O the brain gut connection is NO joke! I swear when I get the pains and cramps, it affects my entire nervous system! Sweats, feeling this overwhelming anxiety type feeling. It’s not like a pain that’s localized and just painful...it overwhelmed the entire nervous system. It’s no wonder anxiety can trigger it, and it can trigger anxiety! It can end up becoming a vicious cycle 😭

My story is very similar to yours..I got it when I was 14 . We were solving some math's exercises and the class was in absolute silence . I remember that I had a history exam the next class hence I was pretty nervous, and out of nowhere my tummy makes this loud noise ,the girl next to me laughed and I was mortified . After that ,similar situations(being in quiet , small room , crowded rooms or not being able to get up and leave when I felt like it) triggered my anxiety and IBS as a consequence. After 10 years ,I have to go to the bathroom 3-4 times before leaving my house in the morning , and if i can't go because of being constipated I won`t leave at all cause I know I`ll be in pain all the time :/ ..some days it is better and other days it`s worse but it sure as hell isn`t going away :/

Hi my fellow IBS community. I am 16 and only recently diagnosed with IBS and it’s horrible…my family just thinks it’s normal stomach pain but they really don’t know it’s worse than normal. I miss out on so much of school because I’m scared of my tummy making noises or because my stomach decided it was a good day to flair up and so I have decided to do online schooling just to help me put my health first and get used to this. Thank you so much for this video…it makes me realise I’m not the only one.

My 103-year-old healthy grandmother told me that people who had "stomach issues," (that's what they called it back then) would drink their coffee, water, or whatever with 1/4 tsp of baking soda. It was the norm back then to use sodium bicarbonate for it. I started feeling bloated a couple of weeks ago. I took my coffee with 1/4 tsp bicarbonate with it. I felt immediately relieved. My belly was moving and the abdominal stress was gone. Now I do what the old folks did back then.

Daniel Grajeda hey Daniel as a fellow sufferer I suggest papaya enzymes to take with food
Probiotics with more than 10 strains
      Pure aloe vera juice
They sell quality products at Whole Foods or your local health store
The enzymes are supposed to help break down food especially when you eat out.
Probiotics once every morning on an empty stomach your gut flora is key to stay normal.
Aloe vera helps heal the gut lining especially leaky gut meaning holes in our guts and indigestible foods escape into the bloodstream causing damage to our body. Start with a little bit since it can act as a mild laxative. Take it with probiotics in the morning.
I don’t know your diet but this may help
      Cut out
      Gluten
      Dairy
      Processed foods
Refined sugar but it’s ok in moderation
Eggs may be a culprit even in foods.
      Start eliminating.
      Try these foods:
      Rice
      Sweet potatoes
      Or regular
      Salmon
      Chicken
      Turkey
      Fruits
      Veggies (cooked)
      Beans (if u can tolerate)
Nut butters! (Go organic and watch for the added sugars)

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I've had IBS for 8 years and just recently discovered anxiety was the trigger. I've experienced everything you have. I have daily attacks while at work or traveling a good majority of the time. Being stuck in a office or at a desk is the worst and makes IBS so much worse - mostly when you can't leave your chair because your job isn't that flexible. (Plus people can be so cruel and make fun of you for something you can't always control - especially at work.) I don't feel so alone knowing I'm not the only one who suffers from IBS caused by anxiety. Hopefully more people will choose to educate themselves on this issue and be a bit more sensitive to these issues.

I have sensitive and irritating often because it was starting on my last year of high school... So i'm starting getting anxiety, i have lots of absents because of this, of course i'm a shy person... So i had no idea what to do, it was last subject, it was physics.. My stomach starting to hurt very bad.. Because i want to let the air out but seriously... I have anxiety.. Imagine all people looking at you.. I have low-esteem since i was a kid.. So yeah but because of ibs... It ruins my life.. I want to study.. Go to school but i hate it, i'm becoming introvert, i usually take out foods when i order them, i usually don't eat with my friends and relatives, i don't go to occasion because of my IBS

Right when I thought no one understood what I'm go through! You couldn't have said it better! my family don't get it. Everyone wants me to do this, and do that! Passing judgment on what they think 💭 is causing it.... But no one has even taken the time to get a full understanding of what IBS is... or even sat with me in the ER. Im always in the hospital ALONE... they are more concerned with me keeping the noise down. It's so sad! When you are faced with a illness this bad... you really start seeing people for who they are. I'm so stressed out with the people around me... so frustrating! Thank you so much for this video.... I almost cried when you said you would call the ambulance because I know that feeling very well. The paramedics, doctors, and nurses show more compassion than my own family. I been telling myself not to worry about what others think or say! But it's not easy when you are living in their house. I know this extra stress is not helping my situation. In fact it's making things worst! I pray to god he blesses me with my own place very soon... please pray for me everyone, I would really appreciate that! Thank you.

I'm so sorry you are suffering so much lovely, no-one deserves this horrible condition and it does affect us greatly on a daily basis. However I promise you, it does get better and you will find someone to confide in who understands and is empathetic. I remember being at University and having some rather unsympathetic housemates who made cruel remarks. It just shows people's true colours as you said, and it's quite enlightening because you quickly understand who your true friends are and who is worth investing time into. Maybe you could write a letter to your family telling them how you feel, sometimes that's easier than having a heated or emotional debate. Or maybe show them my video and say you're feeling the same? A lot of people think IBS is so trivial and don't think about how much it affects us, but we have to educate people and stay patient. Because it's an invisible illness it's tricky for others to see us suffering, but with time, they will come to understand and hopefully be more sympathetic to you 💕

The bathroom is my second home. Since I was young. I have had sleepless nights and sick to my stomach pain. I had a colonoscopy yet was deemed “normal”, and got sick the very next day which gave me depression. I am now on a FODMAP diet, and thankfully the sick to my stomach feeling is completely gone! However the diarrhea and gas pains remain. I will take the wins where I get them. My husband is AMAZING and is so understanding. It’s really crazy how many women are commenting. I'm almost 40 years old and I've been dealing with this for a few years now. My pain is unbearable at times and it's accompanie by bloating, burning feeling in my stomach, unbearable pain , back aches, nausea and vomiting . I’ve been diagnosed with IBS since I was 18, but your video reminded me of so many times prior to that age that led up to that diagnosis. I had been seeing a pediatric GI since i was 9 for severe acid reflux, severe lactose intolerance, etc. So I’m no stranger to tummy trouble. I had a few panic attacks & anxiety attacks since the age of 15 as well, eventually leading to a brain-gut connection. Now being 22, almost 23, I just sort of dealt with it, and tried to get through it. You’re very right on understanding your body - you learn a lot of things about your body with IBS! And you definitely study more since you can’t be in classes all the time.
I do have to say, I went back to my GI a couple of weeks ago, and he recommended trying a low FODMAP diet. This research only came out about a year or so ago, so it’s new, but has around an 85% success rate. It’s essentially an elimination diet of all high-FODMAP foods for the first 3-4 weeks, and then you reintroduce foods that you eat most often a couple of days apart. This goes along with the food diary suggestions too. But after 2 days on the fodmap diet, my symptoms almost disappeared. Bear in mind, on most days, my IBS was absolutely awful - multiple bathroom trips, severe cramping, bloating, you name it. Now I’m halfway through this diet and my symptoms are still at bay. Even if I do have severe anxiety attacks, my bathroom trip is far more pleasant and infinitely more solid, if you catch my drift. I finally feel like a normal person.
This Low FODMAP diet is not easy, as I’m someone who loves to eat out & enjoy take out as well. But it’s been well worth it. And if I can find the foods that absorb more water in my system (high FODMAP trigger foods) during the reintroduction phase, maybe I can eliminate it entirely or reduce my intake. I’m very optimistic! Talk to your GI before doing it, as it is a limiting diet (I have not lost weight on this diet, and I’m a small person to begin with).
New subscriber after this video, and thought I’d share this little miracle with anyone who may stumble upon my comment 💛
*you can find the lists of low, high and moderate FODMAP foods through a simple google search! Stay committed to it, you won’t regret it* 😊

I felt as if my mind was playing tricks on me and I thought I had a deadly disease that would lead to a more dangerous issue and I was terrified!! My fear then turned into joy when I found out that my symptoms were treatable to the point where I could have normal days. Upon completion of a series of test my Doctor finally got to the bottom of this!!! Every test was worth the peace of mind that it gave me in the end. I start senior year tomorrow. I had a flare up today i think my ibs type is D. And this video and comment section is such a safe haven right now. Thank you. Our school system here in Hungary can be a real hardass. But thank you for this story. I know we can do this. I can tip toe in the right direction and so can all of us. We need to listen to our body when we need a break from stress. When you have a mental overload, sit aside put on some youtube beta waves, touch your favorite soft blankey and play with some simple stress toys or objects. Let the thoughts back in one at a time and find temporary solutions for each one if you can. This way maybe the thought won't lurk in your head for a while.

I was diagnosed today but have suffered from it forever it seems. I'm almost 21 and feel kinda dumb for not getting it checked earlier but I couldn't afford to see someone about it anyway this video was really awesome and helpful for me. I've just had to restrict my diet severely but it's worth it if it will stop the pain and lessen how many absences I have in my classes haha. I liked hearing her story, I'm of course sad that anyone has to feel what she does and what many of us in the comments do but I am really glad she posted this video. This condition can be embarrassing and scary and painful and so many attempts of treatment seem to do nothing. A lot of us need to know we aren't alone or don't need to be embarrassed. I've been literally sitting in bed in dizzying pain for three days now (This was the first day I was able to move and walk and go about my life) its hard and I'm glad there are people willing to talk about the condition.

I stumbled on this video because I am looking for tips on dealing with anxiety & IBS and I am so thankful to you. On many RUclips channels or any site in general I have seen people complaining about this condition of ours and talking about their sad stories, instead of actually showing useful tips: I have dealt with IBS since I was little on a pretty wide on-and-off scale but coming from a past riddled with many mental health issues, I believe that there ARE actual ways to work it out and "make sure there are bathrooms where you go" is not good advice for me. You gave me lots of hope for the future because in September I'll stay for 3 weeks in Brighton with my schoolmates, and with the right equipment (probiotics aka the most loyal pals out there, psyllium husk to prevent constipation and a journal) I am sure I can deal with it pretty well. I also suggest all these things to anyone, especially teenagers like me dealing with it and please, work on focusing on the good side and don't let your illness get in your way, ever. Much love

I've gotten into and left university two times because I've become almost paranoid of quiet places and it makes extremely stressed. But I try to look at it positively, and educate myself though other ways 😊 I'm so thankful to have a mom like mine, she's so understanding and I guess that's very important- to have someone close that understands and supports you

I could hug you. I really needed to watch this. I've been dealing with all these same things for 20+ years. Daily pain and having no idea when it's going hit. I've had days where I just wanted to end my life because it has stolen my.life from me. I can't be social or have friendships because it's too hard to keep friends when you have to cancel plans etc. I just want to be home now and never go anywhere. I'm so glad you found something that helps you control your symptoms. I pretty much eat nothing and have tried every diet out there. Feels good to know I'm not alone. And the Anxiety ugggg. People don't get it how constant stomach pain can give you anxiety. You said it so well. Thanks for your honesty.

Yes, I am 52 and I remember having IBS since I was 10. I had it on and off in different severity through my life and it was always worse during the most stressful times. I finally found out it was IBS but I haven't really taken medication for it because I am not a med person by choice. I have suffered with it through my life. I have the same in my closet, a range of 5 sizes. It really kicked up when I started peri/menopause. It's no fun at all. The gas is awful, everything is awful about it. Reducing anxiety is a lot of work, I try every day, some days are better than others. Diet is huge I cannot vere from my organic diet or I am in trouble. No sugar, processes foods, soda, sweets are a no no and if I go off it my body screams at me. NO fun. Best of luck to you.

I'm all too familiar with the multiple size wardrobe syndrome, the excruciating cramps and the horrendous wind. I think one day all of the raising awareness will all pay off and more people will start to raise awareness which will probably lead to increased funding towards research for IBS. I just want a cure so bad for all of us. This is such a horrible way for anybody to live.

This video really helped me actually. I’ve always had stomach issues but everything went downhill super fast when we were out of school for so long with COVID. Now every morning I’m late to school and I freak out at school and get so scared that something will happen in school. I’m still working on ways to dial it down. I actually also cut out cows milk from my diet. As well as highly acidic foods, and almond milk. Originally almond milk was my alternative to cows milk but I discovered that it still messed up my stomach. I haven’t told people about it for so long because it’s embarrassing but I love that there’s so many other people who understand. And yes, it’s a horrible cycle of anxiety causing flare ups, and then being scared that your going to have one, and then that makes you anxious, and then you don’t feel good. I’m really sorry for everyone who deals with it. I know it’s hard, but we could do it. Also thank you for this video :)

Thank you so so much for uploading this ! You've helped and reassured me a lot by uploading this I'm currently undergoing tests e.g. The bloods tests , ultra sounds ect for IBS and more than likely I do have it , the pain is unbearable at times it's so nice to have someone who I can relate too and someone that actually understands what I'm going through especially food/toilet habits wise like I'll have family say things like "oh god you can't eat anything " or "your always on the toilet" etc.... I just wanted to say thank you so much for uploading this and making me realise I'm not on my own with this xxx

    • @ScarlettLondon
      @ScarlettLondon  7 лет назад +1

I'm so sorry to hear you've been suffering Fran but I am pleased this has reassured you. It is difficult for people around you too, as often you can look totally normal on the outside so they can't always understand the inner turmoil. It's also frustrating that they can't help you and it has been hard on my family too - plus it kind of showed me who my true friends were too! But as time passes, you do find ways to manage it and now, it's a part of me that I accept rather than look at as a flaw. My IBS has made me more determined, more driven, more passionate and if I didn't have it, I might be a different person :) so I always try to look at the positives. I'd definitely recommend trying to keep a food diary to see if there's any food triggers (dairy is a massive one) and also try an app called Headspace to help manage stress during anxious periods like exams etc. And of course, if you have any questions - please feel free to come to me, always here to chat!! xxx

Thank you for this video though, this really puts me at ease since I am currently struggling with IBS. I try hard to be good in school but IBS just hits me in the face and it takes a huge toll on my attendance and mood, what makes it worse is that I struggle with depression and anxiety. All my built up anxiety worsens my flare-ups, which makes it really for me to get up in the morning and go to school because I worry so much. I worry if people are going to hear my intense stomach noises (they’re really loud), I worry if I vomit in my classroom etc. Sometimes I arrive school late because the cramps would be so painful in the morning, and everyday nausea is just the cherry on top.

I want to cry tears of joy for the first time in a while. I’ve been struggling with so much in my life lately and my health issues adding onto it make it 100x worse.. so here’s my story: All my life i’ve always really had anxiety, it would come on and cause my stomach to hurt and my mom literally tells me about how i was on medicine for it prescribed by my pediatrician but that’s it, they just said it was a nervous stomach. Now as i’m older i know i have really bad anxiety. When i get anxiety my stomach starts cramping and it makes me need to go to the bathroom like you explained but i never really thought anything of it. The pains weren’t ever severe and lasted a few seconds and i’d end up yk passing gas and it was just an off and on thing. That’s basically been my whole life up until about a year ago, summer of 2019. I ended up moving away from my school due to my dad losing his job and it really took a toll on my mental health and still currently we don’t have a home, we are living in my grandfathers 1 bedroom house for our 4 person family while he’s away with his girlfriend. So my life hasn’t been so great. But my anxiety increased since the move and i’m not exactly sure why but my best guess is that the whole moving process and everything i just lost a strict schedule with sleeping and diet. Well i ended up going sleep at my best friends house about a year ago while everything was going on and out of no where in the morning my stomach started cramping really bad it felt like diarrhea but would travel to my pelvis with extremely sharp pains. I couldn’t move speak barely even breathe i was doubled over in pain crying on the toilet. My dad came get me and rushed me to the doctor and by then i was basically okay because i took some advil but at the doctors i still had anxiety and threw up and then the doctors weren’t sure if i had a kidney stone or something so i was sent off to the emergency room. After an x-ray they confirmed i was just.. constipated. This all came as a shocker to me because for my whole life i’ve always had a sensitive stomach to where eating too much of unhealthy foods for a while, my stomach would start hurting more often and it would just make me feel and and give me all these unwanted symptoms so i mainly stayed on a healthy diet. The thing is, i was eating unhealthy at my friends house but because of my supposedly anxious stomach, these foods would make me go to the bathroom often and i would even have diarrhea A LOT at her house. So i really didn’t believe them with this constipation thing but i went home and just started eating better. 10 days later the pain came back so i was very concerned. We went see my pediatrician and he said it was constipation again so he prescribed miralax. I took it for one day which wasn’t what he told me to do but i started using the bathroom everyday just as normal. Months went by and i was on a normal schedule with what i ate, my diet wasn’t any different and i was using the bathroom just as normal until i went sleep at my same friends house again and the pains came back. This was new year’s eve of december 2019. My mom rushed and came get me to bring me home and i took my usual strong painkiller that belonged to my dad and one thing i should note is that when i get these pains, i try so hard to use the bathroom but nothing ever comes out and when i do try, it causes the pain to get worse. It was cramps so they were off and on. Once the pain medication would kick in i’d use the bathroom, get everything out and i was fine. Well, after that i was basically traumatized. I stopped going to my cousins house and was scared for my life to leave my house because when my anxiety would come on, i’d get panic attacks in cars and think “there’s no bathroom around, those pains are going to come back” so i end up freaking myself out and my vision starts to go black and i’m panicking so much. So now i’m terrified of leaving my house and being in vehicles because of the fear that those pains will come back and i won’t have a toilet around and i’ll be trapped in an uncomfortable place where i’m in pain surrounded by people who are just loud and keep asking “are you okay.” Then just about 2 weeks ago, once again going a few months with the same diet and bathroom schedule, the pain comes back all at once and hits me like a ton of bricks and i’m crying in pain. But it was the 4th time i’ve experienced the pain so i knew how to handle it better. I popped in my pain medication except this time, i tried to put my butt in the air to yk pass gas and when i did, it caused the pains to come back so i hurried back onto the toilet and it allowed me to get everything out and made the pains go away. It’s very relieving to know that i have a way of helping it but still i’m so terrified of leaving my house. To make things worse, my boyfriend of 3 years who has always been by my side and has helped me through everything from anxiety to depression to even issues with my parents, is starting to give up on me. Please don’t call him toxic because believe me we have the purest relationship and he loves me and i love him. But these stomach issues and anxiety makes it hard for me to see him and i had to cancel plans on him today after not seeing him in about 2 months because of my anxiety and i was scared to leave. I really don’t know for sure still what my problem is and it’s been a year i’ve been sobbing because my life is just getting worse and i can’t bare losing my boyfriend because he means so much to me and i know i can’t blame him but i have to fix these issues. Could you please let me know if this seems like i may have IBS? I’m really not sure but it seems so likely and i’m just scared of living at this point. My life has become too difficult to deal with and this “IBS” is making it so hard. I’m 14 as well.. young for a boyfriend i know but it’s my first real relationship and we were best friends for a year before we got together and he’s been my bestfriend for so long, he’s been there for me through the hardest times. Thank you for this video and your story you don’t have any idea how much this has helped me. Thank you so much😭❤️

I feel this. Im in school and have to move home early because being at school makes me anxious and triggers ibs. I get really bad nausea and my body has a hard time digesting food which makes me feel weak. I even have to skip my graduation ceremony this weekend because i dont have the energy to go. I have constant anxiety and it just sucks the life out of me. I have the same fear with my boyfriend too. He said he's not going to leave, but if my anxiety keeps going then he doesn't know what he will do. Same as you, he's a great guy and has been so supportive but he also has a life he wants to live too. I feel guilty bc I also have to cancel on him a lot. I know being home helps me get better and he's really supportive of that, but its hard for him and me not being able to be there for him the way I wanna be. It really does sound like you have ibs tho. I have come to find that handling anxiety and ibs is a lot of trial and error which can be frustrating bc it gets in the way of life and you just want it to stop so you can get back to being yourself. It will get better, for the both of us. I have full faith ❤

I started dealing with what I THINK is IBS when I was about 13. Around the same time I had started dealing with anxiety and so for about 8 months straight I would have (sorry for be disgusting) to use the washroom about 3 times daily before school. I would never have this issue on weekends which is what led me to realize this was definitely school related anxiety. I remember feeling so physically drained everyday at school, I wouldn't eat in the mornings either because that would cause me to need the washroom too and I would eat very limited types/small amounts of food to make sure I wouldn't need to use the washroom at school. I would also get terrible headaches throughout the day as well as stomach aches, gas pains, etc. It was just a very bad and unhealthy cycle and it continued for about a year and a half until I finally decided to see a psychologist to treat my anxiety. It still gets really bad from time to time but for the most part learning how to cope with anxiety has helped me quell my unsettled stomach too. Again I don't really know if I have IBS or just a sensitive stomach but I've always kind of wondered

Glad I clicked and am watching this video, I had a similar experience reflecting on it now. My first experience was probably when I was taking end of year exams at the end of primary school. I was SO nervous and anxious, I remember the silence of the room and my stomach gurgling loudly, I was very flatulent due to it and I had everyone in my year laugh at me because of it. I aced my exams in spite of it but maybe that experience made me prone to it as I can't always remember suffering from it. I went through a stressful living situation a couple of years ago which seems to have triggered it more permanently this time and I'm still learning to deal with it. Thank you for sharing your experience and tips, I've visited the doctors so much, they've been reluctant to help and I never seem to leave without a prescription. I have battled with them to refer me to a dietician and finally got one which is helpful, finally feel like I'm starting to head in the right direction.

Doing the low FODMAP diet helped a lot for me. She touches on it here, but generally, it's avoiding lactose, beans, wheat products, onions and garlic, most fruits, and even some vegetables. Then gradually you start phasing in foods to see what you can tolerate and what triggers you. My doctor recommended it to me and it's backed up by a lot of research--there's also a large online community built around it.

I've only just found this video, after kind of on-and-off searching for a explanation as to what I am experiencing, and i think I've found it. For the last two years I've been experiencing flare ups but also pretty much having this to some extent every day. No doctor could explain what was wrong with me and I think thats a big problem with IBS, because it is, like you said, basically a big umbrella term for multiple symptoms. The stress of thinking about having it definitely makes day to day life so much harder- I struggle to go put with friends, do the things I used to really enjoy. It is so difficult and I'm so glad someone is really talking about what it is like.

I'm so happy I found you Scarlett! I was just going through some Fodmap diet and IBS related videos and there you were! I also just followed you on IG and just wanted to say thank you for talking about it,I've been through it all for as long as I can remember but it's always nice to get reassurance and hear from other people.I don't remember waking up in pain but sometimes soon after I eat my left side just below the rib cage swells up and the gas pain is so bad I'm often doubled over unable to straighten up as I make the way to the bathroom and sit in there with heating pad on my belly and mint tea feeling like I'm gonna pass out until the gas is released or I have a bm. Lucky those severe episodes are not happening too often but the bloating part after eating is almost always with me and this is why I'm really motivated to finally get serious about following the fodmap diet (I did once for 30 days and only had 1 tummy ache) because having to always worry about it and not being able to live the way I want is no longer an option for me.I also have, with the chronic IBS -C anxiety and panic and it's like a vicious cycle! Cheers!

Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words!! Sorry to hear you've been suffering too, but pleased you're finding a few things that help! I have found that food affects it massively - and while stress/anxiety can be a trigger too, you can control and manage it far better by controlling the diet aspect! Let me know how you get on :)

Omg the part where you said you had panic attacks in that same lesson every time, I get the same thing but with eating in the evening. Eating after 4pm causes panic attacks for me, I can literally eat all day long but when it gets to the evening I refuse to eat. I’ve never heard of anyone else having this!

Never heard of anyone with this symptom! I am fine during the day and I can eat anything without feeling sick but when the sun goes down my anxiety starts. I get heartburn, panic attacks, fear of eating, and abdominal pain with growling and I just can't wait for the morning so my fear and symptoms go away

Thank you Scarlett, and I wish you well. Your video is very helpful. My IBS is not as terrible as yours was, but it still makes me feel horrible when it flares up. I can go weeks without it, and feel pretty good, then it hits again out of the blue even though I've been eating the same foods as usual. It makes me cry when it comes back, as I've convinced myself I was finally better and it had gone away.

Honestly, I get so self conscious sometimes about this and I am just starting a relationship so my nerves are at an all time high plus I am still in University with those quiet deadly exams. Thank you so much for the tips. Just watching calmed down my symptoms because now I have knowledge and don't feel alone! I am also allergic to eggs and Dairy and have IBS. Woohoo!
