YES!!! Thank you. I suffer from all these. Some lactose free milks also tear me up, I discovered SOY is also not friendly for me. Dairy free yogurts. It’s to the point I do not eat out because I feel like it’s Russian roulette is it? Or maybe not? 95% of the time it does affect me. Some of my meds do as well.
What's so eye opening is, I've struggled with IBS all my life and people told me I was "being weak, whining, being picky"....and the flares and etc, people laugh at or think it is funny, when we are in severe pain. There needs to be more sensitivity to our condition. I'm a Chef and Baker so, I love and cook a variety of foods and I'm really not picky at all, I just can NOT literally properly digest various foods. Everyone is different.
Hello I’m navigating my symptoms. I went gluten free five years ago but went to hospital cause of high pain under ribs. So many tests but nothing. Such a nightmare to get answers.
I've had some gruesome injuries that would bring most people to extreme tears if they happened to them. And by comparison, those injuries were a 1 or 2 on the pain scale compared to the pain of IBS. An IBS flare-up is so extremely painful, unrelenting, and all-consuming that nothing I've ever felt remotely compares. Hours upon hours of undulating waves of extreme pain that makes me vomit from the pain.
I have recently been told by my GP to go on a Gluten Free Diet to help ease my IBS symptons im finding it so hard as the cost of Gluten free foods is so high and im finding that theres not much choice either.
About the cold carbs, my nutritionist told me that when starch is heated and then cooled down (even if it's heated again) it goes through a process of cristalization, which is great for people with no gut problems because your body absorbs less starch from these foods, but I guess that for us it becomes a problem since we have to get rid of it somehow and our stomach is a bit lazy! Hope it helps!
I watched a girl on RUclips say to drink mallases in warm water because it is a natural laxative. mollases has iron and potassium, helps hair and anemia and PMS bloating. Garlic corn and potatoes are trigger foods.
@@katrinawebbheim3772 i can eat loads of mash potato and it doesn't bother my ibs . I had a large pizza with red onions mushrooms and garlic mayonnaise tonight. Waiting for the results feel fine so far.
Thank you Becky, it is so encouraging listening to you, I sometimes despair with my stomach pains. Hearing you voice the same triggers and food problems is a relief that I am not alone.
I'm wondering if this might be my issue. We cook a large batch of food for the week, and the first day or 2 I'm somehwat ok but, start having issues as the week progresses. I've also found I don't handle red meat or soybean oil very well, and struggle with gluten, especially white carbs.
You mean that we cannot eat pre-cooked food and reheated. Coz these days i'v got terrible pain in my tummy after eating little beef and shitake mushroom . But cant figure out what cause this pain.
THANK YOU! I can agree with everything you talked about here, and some, that I thought was causing me troubles, but didn't understand why. It makes me feel more validated that someone else is discussing the same, and how it affects them. I feel like the things I can eat are getting smaller and smaller. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Be safe and stay well. Catherine
Holy crap, Becky is the first person I’ve encountered in my entire life who talks about health and food and well-being with the same jaded exhaustion and frustration as I do. For the first time it feels like there are others out there who feel the same way I do.
Fascinating! Thanks so much! I have Crohn’s and I’m a IBD researcher (mice studies) and every day I keep learning. You’re experience is very real, valuable and insightful. All gut issues have certain common diet offenders and being mindful of these is paramount. Learning about healthy diets and our own bodies is a journey and so much can be done without conventional treatments!
@@Mystomach Hi. I was diagnosed about 15 years ago upon a CT scan I believe, finding the classic open/close pattern’s throughout my whole gut (at the time, mostly ileum was inflamed). At the time I had lots of bloody diarrhea and I basically stopped eating almost everything and started doing green veggie juicing, and for many many years I just managed with a gluten free diet and controlled most of the symptoms, like stomach aches and cramps, but still wit on and off diarrhea. Nowadays, I’m still med-free but have a much varied diet and manage with occasional kaopectate (bismuth is an effective relatively non-toxic cheap IBD management tool that you could use intermittently…never more than a couple months on a daily basis) and lots of potent antioxidants (vitamin C during day, melatonin for sleep) and stress management. This fight is 50% on your head and 50% with sustaining a clean diet (low in red meat due to heme-iron harms, high in omega oils, high in insoluble fiber, low in carbs + easy to digest). I also occasionally supplement with B12 (if I’m eating vegetarian), zinc, vitamin K (if I’m not getting enough greens) and treat myself against sulfur reducing bacteria with Malva sylvestris, molybdenum and again, bismuth (in peptobismol and Kaopectate). I also drink kombucha, daily, like kefir and yogurt to keep a diverse and functionally complete microbiota which also protects me from bad microbes. It’s a lot, I know. Good luck!
Totally agree with all of these. It’s so frustrating isn’t it! At least we know we have to avoid them but trying to explain to people is such a hassle.
What makes Becky's contributions so useful is that she is not reading out of a hymn book but narrating from personal expeirence. It is like the difference between a journalist on the spot and someone reporting from an office. You can see this with her experience of cold carbohydrates. They are not officially given as bad for IBS but for some IBS sufferers they may be and she warns us about them, rightly not caring what any "official line" is. This is what I call useful medical advice! And yes everyone is different. Half a bottle of wine does me no harm but most so called "soothing teas" send my stomach churning around! I can confirm reports about rhum. Alcohol which i have to avoid are: sweet reinforced drinks (eg Baileys), rhum, champagne, beer.
Hi Becky, i recently found you in the past couple months. I've been struggling with extreme stomach issues for the past 3years and I'm finally starting to feel bit better because I've been tracking the foods that trigger me(i still have some v bad days). It's been a very frustrating couple years but anyways it was nice to find your videos it makes me feel not so alone in the struggle. So thank you! Keep posting videos. I love your recipes!
When carbs cool down the starches inside them change to resistant starches that cannot be digested. For normal people that is a good thing but for IBS sufferers it is really bad, because resistant starches are food for the bad bacteria. This is taken partly from James Wong's book 'How to eat better' in which he explains the resistant starches and from online info from the Monarch University. Hope this helps :-) Thanks so much for your videos, they are super helpful! PS: the Lactofree cream chees is the most delicious devil, it is devastating for me. I'm so sad because it tastes soo good ;)
Thanks for the video. Ibs sufferer for many years and the food you mentioned are triggers. I've just decided it isn't worth it to suffer the effects, so just avoid triggering foods.
I've just started the FODMAP diet. Thanks for all your videos, they are extremely helpful for someone who Has only been diagnosed for 6 months. Sugar affects me, not just my IBS but my diabetes too. I think that's what triggered this flare up I'm in the middle of currently, last week I ate cold pizza. High fat, spicy or fried foods trigger me off.
Hello, new to you! Noticed this is a year old, still helping folks! I’ve IBS, I’m low FM, GF, DF for over a year. For me, no refined sugars, no caffeine no alcohol. Ground red meat seems to go better than a steak which can lead to so much pain. I’ve been working on chewing more thoroughly and eating smaller portions at a slower pace this has allowed me to open up my diet a bit more, but I must cook all my low FM veg, I miss salads! I have found the one sweet I can digest well is unrefined coconut sugar, it really helps to have this one sweet retreat. Thank you for All your videos!
I use the Nutribullet for smoothies (blueberries, spinach etc.) and eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. Especially green leafy vegetables. I feel like my IBS is gradually getting a bit better, it was a lot worse to start. Ginger and peppermint tea is helping quite a lot.
who really helped me get over it and who i think has a good attitude about it is hank green. he doesn't have ibs but he does have ibd/ulcerative colitis and they come with similar reasons why one could be embarrassed. he has a few videos about it across multiple youtube channels and also talks about it on his podcasts sometimes. if you search it up in yt, you're sure to find something
I think the 'cold carbs' problem may be from eating the same food in subsequent days. I've found I have to space out my exposure to foods - even those I otherwise handle well.
@@idasaenz1545 Take lactose for instance. You might be able to eat one piece of cheese but not three. If you have carbs in say, pizza, one evening, and then again the next morning, it's as if you've eaten past your limit for one digestive period, for carbs.
@@charwest9449 thank you 🌻 for answering i make it a point never to eat gluten. I don't eat pizza not that i don't like it but it is filled with empty carbs. I don't eat rice beans or potatoes nor pasta or sugar just stevia. Try the very best i can at 70 wow ! Sending you good Vibes and Lucky 🍀 ida
Just found your channel. I've had IBS for 15+ years and I just switched to gluten free 1 month ago following some bad flare ups. Totally agree with high fat foods, beef, lamb, caffeine, and carbonated drinks. I can handle 1 alcohol drink, and that's it per my stomach's decree.
New subscriber. Your videos are a real eye opener to me and help me realise I'm not alone. It's like you can read my mind when it come to triggers and how they make you feel! I'm in constant pain and forever bloated and it's affecting my everyday life n have had to leave serveral jobs as a result. I've tried low FODMAP diet it can help me for a day then back to square one. As you said there are still definitely a lot of trigger foods in a low FODMAP diet. Hopefully one day soon we can all find a solution to this problem and live more freely !
Great video :) Fermented foods give me really bad symptoms of IBS, and any foods that are high in fibre and carbs are also very difficult for me to tolerate. I can only eat high carb foods that also have a high GI and are low in fibre. I'm with you on fats - really difficult to digest!
Coffee in the morning takes me immediately to the toilet. Especially if it is a cappuccino. Later on in the day I have 4-5 cups without a problem. So I avoid it in the morning and I drink a herbal tea instead, like mint tea.
Hi Becky. Really great vlog- thanks. I have fructose and lactose intolerance and malabsorption issues. I can barely tolerate sugar in any form. This was great to watch and realise it isn’t just me! 😄 Sending happy tummy vibes from New Zealand
I know that I've complimented your videos already Becky, but seriously. Your videos are SO appreciated and have helped me (and others, I'm sure) a LOT! Keep up the great work and I'm sure you will get famous in the near future! I really can relate to everything you just mentioned. My neighbour has IBS, and while it's nice to have someone to talk to, we don't really struggle with the same things. But I feel like I can totally relate with every single problem you mention on your videos! Never thought about the cold carb though, so I'll definitely try that out. I actually eat cold, gluten/soy free pasta a few days ago and my stomach got all upset afterwards. Perhaps this was the reason, because it really confused me. Thanks a lot for your hard work Becky! We all appreciate you very much!
Cold carbs!!! Oh my gosh this is the worst for me! I thought I was crazy...thank you for the validation.:) I have had the very worst reactions to not only cold pizza but I have reheated some pasta in the microwave and it absolutely destroyed me. I don't like using the microwave anyways...I believe it changes the molecular structure of certain foods that render them indigestible.
We are like condition twins. And not being able to have sugar and fruit adds more stress to my day because for pleasure and a treat I need it, and I'm sick of hearing that I don't, despite the doctor having told me I need happiness and rainbow thoughts and blah blah it's frustrating
Becky great to listen to your info on non-fodmap triggers. I also struggle with cold food in general whether it's carbs or not. Fizzy drinks are a major problem and I haven't had them since early teen years. High fat.rich foods are ones I also avoid like the plague. It is so encouraging to hear that others also have problems with these things as I often wonder if people think I'm weird when I say I can't eat things like you have described. Thanks for your honesty.
haha that's always how I feel because you can't exactly say you're intolerance or allergic to cold foods and fizzy drinks! I'm going to throw in nightshades (types of veg) because they definitely don't agree with me either now. Thanks for watching Kerrie! x
I can't think of any food that I can tolerate. I ALWAYS have glass and bloating. I have only been searching for medical help since about 28-29. I am 32. There were times when I had breaks but I don't anymore. I definitely feel like hell during my cycle. I have isolated myself from everyone. I even stayed away when my sister came to town. I think she feels like I blew her off but who wants to sit around someone while they're extremely gassy.
Wow. I was looking for videos on low fodmap breakfast ideas because I can’t keep spending so much money per meal at my job’s cafeteria or on DoorDash and everything from either source seems to be a problem for my stomach. Saw this video and decided to check it out. This explains why my cousin told me her son struggles with beef. I told her that didn’t make sense as meats aren’t fodmaps, so it must be the garlic and onion seasoning she puts on it. It’s probably all three. I’ve also been struggling with lemonade. Fizzy or not, once I drink it, it doesn’t wanna come back out and neither does anything else I consume. No pain, just constipation. I’m getting tired of how sensitive my stomach is. Also tired of people telling me I just need to stress less or drink honey or some fancy water or bla bla bla. If it was that simple, they’d have told all the dr’s and fixed each of us the first time we went in for a checkup. Anyway, thanks for the pointers. I got your purple book. Now I just have to learn how to use a food scale and cook😅
This is so sad, I'm so sorry for you, it seems like you don't have a single chill day😫 I've found that caffeine, dairy products in general, fizzy drinks and cold carbs are the worst for me, I can't eat them without feeling bloated and having a ton of gas and pain after (sorry if it sounds disgusting xd). But I think rinsing rice after cooking can help, maybe because a lot of starch is eliminated in the process. Also I've noticed that food combining can be helpful, and for me eating too much raw veggies (even low-fodmap ones) is a big mistake. I hope it gets better, you deserve it😃😃lots of love to you and Mark💓
Aw thanks so much, your message means a lot. Sounds like you have it bad too though, that's quite a few things you can't eat :( I hope you manage it ok. Mark says hello too! x
I've been having terrible spasms and flares lately and I'm starting to think I have IBS. I always get sick when I eat fatty or fried foods, dairy, soft drinks, alcohol, and coffee. I'm starting low fodmap and I'm not far enough in to feel a difference, but I pray it works.
I hope it works for you too! I put up a video the other day about the low FODMAP diet... it might be useful :) xruclips.net/video/hdC6V3umYO4/видео.html
grapes are low-fodmap. personally, i still can't eat them but you mentioned them in the high fodmap category and that's not actually correct. just letting you know :)
hi, becky! thanks so much for bring this topic up. i am very interested in the cold carb issue. i suspect i may be in that group as having a gf pizza is fine but the left overs aren't so well tolerated. also the red meats - another possible issue that i will be paying more attention too. any drink with carbon dioxide in it can really cause a lot of gas. ah, more to look into. i hope you are doing well, i'm doing ok. the battle between ibs-c and ibs-d is real here. have a wonderful week! ~k
Yeah exactly, a nice hot gf pizza no problem. But eating it cold the next day or even worse... warmed up the next day actually kills me! Same with cold GF pasta. Mark struggles with red meats completely to the point that he doesn't eat them ever really. I eat them more but he just can't. Glad you are doing ok, just a shame we all have to suffer with IBS!! Have a great week too xx
I had awful food poisoning about 10 years ago. I was in hospital for 3 days on a drip. I had a few food issues prior to this, but now! Red meat, gluten, lactose, mushrooms, caffeine, alcohol, cold carbs, MSG anything and high fat foods.
Cold rice and cold potato is a good source of resistant starch. Resistant starch helps stimulate the growth of Bifidobacterium to help manage IBS related symptoms.
I'd never put two and two together with cold carbs but you're absolutely right. Thank you so much for saying this as now I have something specific I can avoid in order to feel better!
Sweeteners (not so much white sugar), greasy food, alcohol (not an issue for me as I’ve never really drunk it), potatoes (sweet and white), caffeine and anything fizzy.
Same! But since I'm also sensitive to high carb foods -- I found that a "modified keto diet" works best! So, staying under 50-100 g of carbs/day, limiting fats to healthy fish, avocado, and some avocado oil/olive oil; but I certainly couldn't handle the "dirty keto diet" where it's all about dairy and meat.
Thank you for the video. I have received quite a few sarcastic remarks and disbelief about my food intolerance from people, even doctors. I can't take refined sugar, rice, gluten, dairy, mushroom, fermented drinks, food and condiments etc. Strangely one or two date fruits a day is fine. I am ok with cold leftovers but not high fat food. Nettle and green tea seems to help me cope with the pain. Baked Dioscorea Japonica(yamaimo) is my substitute to baked potato.
Hi Becky, I am on the fodmap Monash one. There are definitely some things I cannot have. Yesterday I had 1/2 banana that was bit ripe, then I had I piece of hard cheese and slice of ham... and that overdid it. My symptoms are rubbish... I just start burping non stop from all the gas. I love my wine but I think that’s out the door now. And so I bought gin, but tonic water is bubbly... blow. I do eat a lot of potatoes as they are my go to vegetable as i get so down on what I can eat. No onion, no garlic and I do usually reheat my potatoes- well. Cheers.
Good + useful video! Something that I find triggering are certain preservatives, some effect me as badly as my worst FODMAP triggers. Also malt barley makes me feel gross. High fat/sugar, caffeine, alcohol are also ones for me too 😁
Thanks, glad you found it useful. Yeah preservatives are definitely something I don't consider enough when they actually might be the problem for me when I get pain and am not sure why x
Maybe the FOD map is not for you. Maybe you just have some allergies and need to be tested and stay away from those foods. I think IBS is caused by so many factors but it also causes so many factors like allergies, autoimmune diseases, pain ,seasonal allergies etc. I think the point of doing this is to give your digestive system a break so that you can start to heal and tolerate some things you couldn’t after a while. Sometimes I would imagine you have to permanently eliminate things because there’s so much damage that has been done.
Dr.John Axe video on IBS is very good. and Becky Excaell.. your video IS so good. Thank you. I always felt any COLD drink or food goesi in to our body has to be room temperature (the body breaks down to body temp before it can process the food) And if i drank lemon water cold, i could hear my stomack grumbling. then to the bathroom. yep our body tells us. I wear a lite kotex (always) pad to give me a headstart.
Ate cold left over Daiya gf/df pizza (fire roasted veggie) yesterday morning. Just one slice. Left me unwell and today still recovering. Gonna try one of your tummy appeasing smoothies today and lay low. Lesson learned and never to repeat lol as a plus, I watched your What to buy HIM for xmas....ordered one of those guitar pick makers for a friend!
Aww no so sorry to hear you haven't been feeling good. I hate not being able to eat cold left over pizza. I can never finish my pizza so I used to always eat it cold... but not anymore. Just have to waste it :( Fingers crossed you feel better soon. That's amazing so glad that my what to buy him video helped, Mark is really pleased too :) xx
I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia but wasn't getting better so cut out gluten and helped massively but I have begun to think I need to watch the sugar for my ibs too. xx
Lastly, food fiber when cooked, heated and humidified, becomes soft and pliable. When cooked fiber is refrigerated the moisture is drawn out of the fiber by the low humidity of the refrigerator and the fiber becomes hard again. Some foods can be reheated with water and rehumidified while other can't be. Nuking only heats the water it does not soften the fiber because it doesn't force the water into the food fibers. Gotta take the time to put it on the stove in a pan with a lid and a little water. Think about it for a few minutes and it will make sense.
Oh, i guess most of the symptoms you've said my family have: can't stand caffeine, soft drinks, alcohol... but i can drink kombucha and kefir (we produce at home, is delicious!), because he cleans the liver and the body. Many time it help us to detox and suffer less symptoms, Did you and Mark suffer anything drinking kombucha or water kefir?
Becky Excell you won't be disappointed! I have yet to make my own (but will when I gather all my materials I need), but it's the most tastiest and interesting flavor! Love the plain (less irritating to my gut) and/or maybe with some raw honey, vanilla bean, cinnamon, coconut water/milk.... yummy! I want to make some bc I know I'm missing out on most of the probiotic benefits and flavor.
Becky Excell oh you can also replenish your colon with plain kefir in enema form. It helps you heal quicker and put some good bacteria in the intestines. Any probiotics we put in our stomach doesn't really make it to our colons, very small amount. Most gets destroyed before it hits even the small intestine...
Thats one of the worst things for me though sadly :( So many things even like grapes (even just one grape literally) just gives me such pain! I wish my stomach wasn't so sensitive! xx
Jaysus Becky I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm grateful that my stomach accept them along with few other fruits. And I exactly understand how you feeling about having ibs and such a sensitive stomach. I've always had that, but I thought my stomach gets bigger cause I have extra few kilos and unwanted stomach fat and just can't keep my stomach flat, but for last 6 months it is unbearable, I'm afraid to eat anything!! Even if something seems right and allowed by fodmap doesn't go well for me. But sometimes when we cook we add something out of the list and then is fine... I don't know what to do...
I loved this video and I relate so much to this. I found that high fat foods and sugar are a major no for me! I eat so many granola bars and oat bars and forget that there is so much sugar in them, which is why I feel so rubbish afterwards! Very helpful video, so thank you.
I don't why people make fool of others. I had IBS for 6 years but now i have 100% cured it. Guys don't pay anything to anyone else. I assure you that you can cure yourself easily without paying a single dollar to any one.. I can help you. Don't worry i don't charge. I will be glad to assist you. Drop me a line on Instagram " parker_1989_" Or whatsapp me on +918826601203.
Totally agree with you, I probably think your points are common to IBS triggers issue at all, not just personal. Especially alcohol, cause it has the sugars (didn’t catch your reasons of point)
Potentially. I think the sugar content definitely plays a part but then also all the bubbles just don't agree either! A lot of people seem to struggle with high fat foods. Hope it doesn't affect you too much xx
Alcohol, coffee they are like poison for me, immediate or bad lasting effects starting from 2nd days of consumption. Lactose free milk also troubles me, but mixing with turmeric gives some relief, though i cant have it regularly. I can not have any food everyday, variation is the only way to go. Boiled eggs can trouble too. I feel chicken(lean meat) is the safest to have on a regular basis, good to have the antibiotic free chicken.Rice products are safer but apparently being fully rice dependant is not good since it has arsenic in it and can be carcinogenic, so some keep varying your means with whatever limited options are there. And yes spinach also creates trouble if i have it consecutively. IN fruit i can say only blueberry feels safer. I have gerd, so citrus fruit is difficult for me.
Like you I can’t do caffeine, I can however tolerate decaf tea and coffee. Sugary foods, dairy and alcohol I can tolerate occasionally for a meal out but if on holiday for example (we like to cruise!) I find having those items daily will accumulate and result in IBS-D episode a few days in and has in extreme resulted in me passing out.
Lots of valuable information and can so relate to a lot of it . Cold carbs have been giving me troubles too and I learnt about resistant starch , also fizzy drinks are a big no no and high fat foods . What Gluten free bread agrees with you ? Bread is one that I really miss
Cold carbs become resisitant starch. Green banana and certain other foods have them as well. I hear you about the sugar, I have no clue why it is ok on a low fodmap diet. I have to go keto to not have flair ups. Try the gaps or scd diet.
Thank you! It is wonderful to know that there are others that don’t fit the profile. I can’t tolerate maple either. The soda! Yes people think I’m crazy because I shake all the fizz out before drinking it and really the only soda I drink is GingerAle and only when I have had an upset despite the HFCS. Weird. Yes cold cuts are murder on me along with every artificial sweetener there is including Stevia. I’ve met a lot of people over the years that don’t tolerate the chemicals that are in the food chain like the BHA BHT in them. You didn’t mention, or I missed it, about gums like Xanthan gum. They are everywhere in the food chain and it’s main side effect is gut issues. Thanks again.
I’ve noticed that fermented foods are triggers. This could be yeast, fermented sugars in fruit, cheese, etc. It is limiting and hugely frustrating. From the triggers you mention I wonder if it’s eorth looking into.
hi there...my wife suffers with ibs and the leaflet we had for food was stay away from garlic...But my wife loves garlic and it has no respones to her ibs...everybody is diffrent it's a challenge to find out what triggers the pain.....our hearts are with you...Take care....
Cold carbs have resistance starch which is a big ibs trigger. BTW, bananas and sweet potatoes, gluten free pasta also contain resistant starch, despite being low fodmap even when warm and cooked . I stay away from them and feelf much better . I'd stick to white rice, pumpkin and potatoes as my main source of starch / carb
Apart from the fruits everything else you mentioned is horrible horrible for everyone’s health even the healthiest of us! So don’t worry you are lucky that you can’t tolerate them so at least that stops you from having them.
Thank you for telling me about cold carbs! I thought i cant eat bread anymore but i noticed that im ok when i eat it freshly-brought. Its weird that it doesn’t apply to rice though. I can eat rice from the fridge even on the third day. Im ok with the gluten-free noodles in the fridge too.
Have you ever had a test for SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth)? Have you had any type of abdominal surgery: appendix, gallbladder, c section etc?
Cold carbs bother me as well! I’ve never heard anybody else say that. It’s the weirdest thing. Even if I get a bowl from chipotle which I only get chicken white rice and lettuce. If I let it sit and it gets cold it makes my stomach FREAK out. Cold pizza too. So glad I’m not the only one. Ps I love your videos so much. I’m loving all the what I eat in a day videos. I would love to see more ! 🖤🖤🖤✨
My God! I'm like this, too. I am in my 40s and attempting to eat. I grew up just not eating and just living with being emaciated. I always knew if I ate ANYTHING, I would be sick. I spent so much time tired and lethargic and my cognition was low. It feels a lot like depression, but maybe I had that, too since I knew that eating always made me sick. I was eating foods I thought would be gentle, like grapes and that was bad, too. People would offer me food and it would be all vegetables and I would be thinking in my head, I have to say no and I was 125 pounds and so very hungry and I always had to say no. I been doing FODMAP and it is helping a bit and keeping a journal, but I also found I'm allergic to soy, my throat swells. Salt keeps me awake all night, etc. I know the struggle. I'm going to see a nephrologist to check how things are working. I had to have one kidney removed and now I have lesions on the other. It's worth a try for me to check on absorption problems. I'm sitting here today, because I made a fodmap, vegan bowl and tried to have butternut squash and a little avocado sauce and I am reminded of fodmap stacking, so I really feel lethargic today and cramps. My youth was just horrible knowing food was making me sick. I don't know how I survived my education. Yes, preference, but I am able to have red wine and I can have coffee if I grind the beans and it has to be dark coffees, like Sumatra. I have been drinking Tecino for a while now. It tastes just like coffee, but without the coffee. I might have the cold carb thing. I'm going to try again, soon. Do you work? I am sick and lethargic all the time now. I really blame the food industry. I'm in the U.S. We've had gmo foods here since the 80s I believe. I heard England recently permitted them. I am waiting for England to see just how sick we are from this. I wish I could have warned all of you.
Cold carbs is interesting Ill have to keep an eye on that. You asked for any special foods low fodmap which seem to be triggers. So far as I can see, I absolutely cant tolerate tomatoes tomato paste or anything like that
Yes some of this really resonated for me, although I have made loads less progress than you and Mark seem to have due to my lack of self discipline. Sugars, still an addict, but worse case is candied ginger. Cold carbs? Not sure, but cold potato WD definitely be associated with gut pain for me and I can't even do gluten free pasta really (is it ever really that *hot* by the time you fork it down?), I also have major issues with quinoa and flax seed, maybe some other nuts and seeds too, although roasting seems to help. Maybe just flour in general. Fizzy drinks, yep, also beer, apple juice, icetea, COFFEE. Need to think more about the booze. I think I'm ok on low FODMAP suggestions apart from the beer. Emulsifiers seem to be a problem. Fat and protein intake really difficult to manage and am seeing weight loss specialist in April. Thanks again, great video
It's okay to eat fat, and it's okay to eat beef, lamb, etc. You just need to get it as LEAN as you can. If I eat meat that isn't lean, then it's a trigger. Turkey meat in every form is the best for me. You should try it. Thanks for your video.
I learned what my food triggers are by adding a new food a day. The symptom I get is pins and needles sensation in my lower abdomen. I hope that helps someone. It's trail and error sorry to say.
Wow thanks so much for this video! A bit late seeing it but wow has explained alot and now thinking I'm going to be living on rice and water. My diet is getting extremely limited now. But yeah thanks I'm over being bloated.
Hi Becky, thanks for the tips. My ND has me on a Paleo diet but it doesn't seem to be helping. One trigger for my IBS seems to be lettuce leaves (or at least in excess). My ND told me no red meat but I taken it seriously but maybe now I will. I also love sparkling water and ginger beer sweetened with stevia but I probably should avoid that too. Good tips.
Also I forgot to mention, caffeine is bad for me too so I was drinking Teechino (a coffee substitute with carob and chickory) but, alas, that is a trigger too
@@Jb-ky1ri actually it's all lettuce but I haven't tried it in awhile so I might do better now. Since my last post, I've been seeing a homeopathic doctor who has a really awesome machine called an Epidermal Diagnostic Scanner. It works with bioenergetics and it's able to tell her EXACTLY which foods will trigger me before I even eat them. She has me avoid all triggers until my body has recovered enough and it must be working because I'm able to eat a lot more than before. It's strange knowing that chicken is a trigger for me but not turkey 🙃Go figure!
On human design they show that is the way we eat, not really what we eat.. And some people feel better with hot food, some people digest better with sounds, some people can't mix food.. Each person has a different way to digest.. I didn't REALLy try mine. But my digestion on human design say that I should eat one by one separately and the more nature as possible, not many sauces etc..
Sugar used to hurt me so badly, but after going on some anti anxiety medication, I can weirdly tolerate it again? I still avoid it, but when I have coffee I put a small bit of maple syrup in to take away the bitterness. Egg whites and chicken ALWAYS kill my stomach. But egg yolks don't hurt me, and I can have turkey, so it's not a poultry allergy. Steaks can also give me a tummy ache, but I'm ok with ground beef or a hamburger--it's just the slab of a steak that can give me pains. Lemon is another thing I can't go anywhere near.
Wow that is quite a random list really. I've heard though that egg whites can be quite an irritant for some people... at least the yolk is the best bit!! Very strange with the chicken and turkey thing!! I can't imagine how that works when they are so similar! I think steak can be quite hard to digest sometimes so that might make sense. Loads of people also seem to have problems with lemon! The body is a weird thing how it can change so much though! xx
Alcohol is one I was in denial about for years. I've just taken an alcohol break for a month and my IBS has improved. I didn't even have symptoms aside a very slight bloat after a couple of meals containing onion/garlic which I usually avoid. I guess the gut irritant effect was more major than I realised. I don't have issues with the others on your list save for red meat. I only eat it very rarely now.
Problem with cold carb food is that you should never eat cold leftovers because bacteria content which grows that’s why it doesn’t agree with most people with stomach issues
You need to visit the site, Help for IBS. The young lady's name is Heather. She has the best info on IBS out there. I've followed her advise for about 15 years.
Indeed all of the ones you said I have to. I have a hudge intolerance also for things like kale and any fruits that as edible seeds. Like kiwi or strawberry...
Iv been to the hospital like 5 times with abdominal pain and back pain and every time I get told everything looks fine. It’s so frustrating bc the pain is so bad unbearable. It goes away for a while then it hits me like something crazy. I wonder if this could be it
Another thing you should be careful about on a low fodmap gluten free diet is eating too much rice. All rice contains small amounts of arsenic which can cause stomach issues . Its not recommended to have more than 3 servings a week. i find it easy now only cooking for myself to make rice or noodles and i was just thinking its also in flour mixes and bread eek. You may say large parts of the world eat rice but there are villagers in Bangladesh where there is a lot of arsenic in the water supply and thus rice grown that have high rates of cancer from arsenic poisoning. Worth considering if you have symptoms still.
1. Sugar
2. Cold carbs - cold pasta , pizza etc
3. High fat foods
4. Fizzy drinks n alcohol
5. Caffeine
Thank you xx
omg yes cold pizza messes me up
Lol pizza is becoming my enemy feeling like shit after
YES!!!
@@Thepinkxx Pizza is brutal for me, kills me for like 2 days
Corn is the worst for me idk if anybody else is like this
I watched a girl on RUclips say to drink mallases in warm water because it is a natural laxative. mollases has iron and potassium, helps hair and anemia and PMS bloating.
Garlic corn and potatoes are trigger foods.
@@katrinawebbheim3772 can you send me that video please
i mean, corn is also high fodmap, it has sorbitol. a lot of corn products are low fodmap but corn itself, fresh or canned isn't.
Corn is one of the worst foods anyone could eat . 99% gmo .
Hearing you voice the same triggers and food problems is a relief that I am not alone.
i've always read that IBS sufferers should avoid re-heating food!! I do it anyway for convenience, but I guess this is why.
Yeah a big no no in my experience x
@@BeckyExcell So even if it's thoroughly re-heated?
I'm wondering if this might be my issue. We cook a large batch of food for the week, and the first day or 2 I'm somehwat ok but, start having issues as the week progresses.
I've also found I don't handle red meat or soybean oil very well, and struggle with gluten, especially white carbs.
i think it might be histamine intolerance. Please read about it.
What and how did you find out you had chrons? What are the symptoms. I’m trying to navigate my symptoms and get answers. Many thanks
Oh god yeah it is just the hassle that comes with it, trying to explain it is such a pain!! x
I usually just say “I don’t like ___”. Much easier, even if I come across as picky
Hi Courtney, so glad that I can be of help and that you like my recipes. Glad you are starting to feel better xx
I'm so sad because it tastes soo good ;)
Hey that's interesting thanks.
So glad i found your videos. Having the worst ibs attack that i have had in years! Your videos are so helpful x
Hope you had a good Xmas and IBS didn't take over xx
Hi becky! Can you do a video on like how to stop being so embarrassed when telling people about having IBS? X
Yeah I will get round to doing one soon :) xx
Yes!!! Sucks
who really helped me get over it and who i think has a good attitude about it is hank green. he doesn't have ibs but he does have ibd/ulcerative colitis and they come with similar reasons why one could be embarrassed. he has a few videos about it across multiple youtube channels and also talks about it on his podcasts sometimes. if you search it up in yt, you're sure to find something
I think the 'cold carbs' problem may be from eating the same food in subsequent days. I've found I have to space out my exposure to foods - even those I otherwise handle well.
Can you please tell me how ?
Interesting point.
@@idasaenz1545 oh thank you so much for your thoughtfulness! I need all the good vibes and luck I can get, lol. And the same to you!
A lot of carbs convert themselves to resistant starches after they cool down so that would be the reason it bothers you.
Thank you for sharing this. I have the same symptoms from these 5 triggers. It really makes life aweful, while other people think I'm imagining it
New subscriber.
Sometimes high fat is a gall bladder attack as well- on top of ibs. Much love and prayers to anyone suffering with this
100% correct
Coffee in the morning takes me immediately to the toilet. Especially if it is a cappuccino. Later on in the day I have 4-5 cups without a problem. So I avoid it in the morning and I drink a herbal tea instead, like mint tea.
Hi Becky. Really great vlog- thanks. I have fructose and lactose intolerance and malabsorption issues. I can barely tolerate sugar in any form. This was great to watch and realise it isn’t just me! 😄 Sending happy tummy vibes from New Zealand
Aw hi Amy, glad you enjoyed the video and made you feel less alone. Fructose is evil!! x
LOVE this video. I find all of these to also be really bothersome for my gut too! Thanks for all your videos!! They're so fab!
We are like condition twins. And not being able to have sugar and fruit adds more stress to my day because for pleasure and a treat I need it, and I'm sick of hearing that I don't, despite the doctor having told me I need happiness and rainbow thoughts and blah blah it's frustrating
Keto is like the best diet for this . It’s the only one that helped me . Open you’re confort zone carbs can be dramatic for people like us with ibs.
I tried Keto, then the doc asked why my bad cholesterol levels, doubled in a few months. My stomach cannot tolerate too much fat and red meat.
I love your videos, learned a lot from them. Keep up the good work Becky! I live in Los Angeles County.
This is so sad, I'm so sorry for you, it seems like you don't have a single chill day😫
I've found that caffeine, dairy products in general, fizzy drinks and cold carbs are the worst for me, I can't eat them without feeling bloated and having a ton of gas and pain after (sorry if it sounds disgusting xd).
New subscriber here 😊 loving your channel, finding it really helpful, my Dr says I have IBS but I've no stomach pain but def do have bad bloating
Hi Jackie, welcome to my channel! Glad you are finding it helpful :) The bloating isn't fun is it :( xx
Becky Excell no not at all, haven't found out what triggers it yet, very early days....
Sameee im 90% bloat and the rest are pain
Sweeteners (not so much white sugar), greasy food, alcohol (not an issue for me as I’ve never really drunk it), potatoes (sweet and white), caffeine and anything fizzy.
I tried keto and couldn't do it because of the high fat, made my stomach bad.
Made me nauseous
I can't have red peppers! even though they are on the low FODMAP list, they don't agree with me. also, I can't drink caffeine either
I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia but wasn't getting better so cut out gluten and helped massively but I have begun to think I need to watch the sugar for my ibs too. xx
So glad that you are feeling better with your hiatus hernia, definitely consider sugar it really is a struggle for me, I have to be very careful!
I’ve been on the diet for a few months and everytime I have large amounts of water I have an attack. Do you know why?
I had that so I drink room temperature coconut water
Oh, i guess most of the symptoms you've said my family have: can't stand caffeine, soft drinks, alcohol... but i can drink kombucha and kefir (we produce at home, is delicious!), because he cleans the liver and the body. Many time it help us to detox and suffer less symptoms, Did you and Mark suffer anything drinking kombucha or water kefir?
I think we need to try some kefir and kombucha maybe and see how we get on properly xx
Dthe Vyda Crystal I didn't think it detoxed you though... explain the science behind that, if you're able.... please
Amanda Peterson keffir gave me the worst gut week of my life. FYI. ;)
Grapes are allowed on fodmap. Obviously if we will eat enormous amounts won't be good, but bunch is not going to harm 😊
@@BeckyExcell can you eat strawberrys? or any acidic fruits?
xylitol, malitol any of the 'fake' sugars!!
Yes! Definitely with you on that! x

this is because they're high FODMAP
Oh yeah I used to go through packs of sugar-free gum in my early twenties. Quickly learned to stop
I loved this video and I relate so much to this. I found that high fat foods and sugar are a major no for me! I eat so many granola bars and oat bars and forget that there is so much sugar in them, which is why I feel so rubbish afterwards! Very helpful video, so thank you.
No problem! Hope you are feeling ok at the mo x
This video helped so much! Never thought fizzy drinks would be hurting my fiance, thank you!

Totally agree with you, I probably think your points are common to IBS triggers issue at all, not just personal. Especially alcohol, cause it has the sugars (didn’t catch your reasons of point)
A lot of food bother me but nothing like what you're experiencing. Hang in there and thank you for your videos!
Oh my .. you sound just like me! I still cant figure my gut out after 50:years😔
If you're still struggling check your stomach for parasites. Walnut husks and wormwood will kill parasites- and solves ibs like problems.
I wonder if the fizzy drinks affect you because of the high sugar content. Sugary desserts do not bother me, but high fat foods really really do.
I have gerd, so citrus fruit is difficult for me.
thank you so much for mentioning sugar! I have been so confused by the low fodmap diet, because it allows sugar, and I get so sick from sugar.
I can eat Genius Gluten Free Bread, it is one of the best for me. Give it a try :) x
Thats interesting will definitely look into it, thanks xx
Maybe you should look into histamine intolerance!
hi there...my wife suffers with ibs and the leaflet we had for food was stay away from garlic...But my wife loves garlic and it has no respones to her ibs...everybody is diffrent it's a challenge to find out what triggers the pain.....our hearts are with you...Take care....
Super helpful thank you for making this video. Never thought cold carbs could cause issues...
I have some Tecino. Been afraid to drink it. So it doesn't give you IBS symptoms?
Hormonal contraceptives are my number 1 trigger. The worst really...then comes food and stress.
Hey John, sorry to hear the long list of things you can't really eat either. If anything I hope you know that you aren't alone! xx
Becky Excell thank you for your answer! Can I just ask if your cold carbs includes rice?
Toss rice help you
Hi Becky, thanks for the tips. Good tips.
Also I forgot to mention, caffeine is bad for me too so I was drinking Teechino (a coffee substitute with carob and chickory) but, alas, that is a trigger too
@@engineer4god470 what type lettuces are ur triggers? Are you ok with romaine lettuce?
The body is a weird thing how it can change so much though! xx
Never thought of cold carbs but cold pasta come to think of it makes sense for me thank you.
The cold carbs could be because certain carbs can become resistant starch, for example with potatoes.
I agree on sugar and high fat foods, not sure about caffeine and artificial sweetener. Too much kombucha gives me issues as well.
Iv been to the hospital like 5 times with abdominal pain and back pain and every time I get told everything looks fine. It’s so frustrating bc the pain is so bad unbearable. It goes away for a while then it hits me like something crazy. I wonder if this could be it
Ended up being a cyst on my spleen. Much different. Glad we figured it out
Only cheese and cows milk messes with my IBS... it's horrible
Edit . I dont eat potatoes only sweet potatoes.
