    I mentioned this in the Pelagos Part 1 review but not a deciding factor in choosing between the 2 watches.... The lug width! 21 on the P39 and 20 on the BB58! If you love your strap changes this could be important? Thanks for watching all!!!

      I think P39 should only be worn on the supplied bracelet and strap, OR, Marine Nationale parachute strap by NDC which comes in 21mm. So problem solved.

      They should have included a removal tool for the bracelet, or quick release pins considering that it comes with a rubber strap in the box. That's my biggest criticism.

      Also the pelagos fxd has been being tested by seal team 6 for the last year. They have custom text and strap colors based on squadron (red, blue, silver and gold) that’s why they added the extra seconds dashes on the bezel. Few images were leaked and the swiftly taken down.

    I think you’re right, I’d go with the BB58 also because of its retro style and the lovely warm gold lettering on the dial. The Pelagos as wonderful as it is is just too close to a Submariner and at its price point I’d be looking at a Breitling Superocean as well, both of which aren’t like a 58. Great show as always, cheers MWC :-)

      Totally agree. Clasp size is the biggest annoyance to me (small wrist) as you have to play with the number of links on each side to center the clasp on the below side of the wrist. Additionally, as it is big, the centering of the clasp on the wrist overpowers the centering of the watch on the otherside and this can push the case to the side.

      Completely agree Rob, and as someone who does a bit of diving and uses a watch as a backup to the D. C., I and just about anyone I've ever dived with tend to swap the bracelet for a rubber strap. Much easier than trying to fiddle around with divers extensions that often fail to fit exactly as needed over the suit anyway. I would always choose no extension. 👍

    Love this comparison show MWC!
    Both are sadly out of my price range but I’d go for the Pelagos 39 if I had the money in my watch piggy bank. Titanium doesn’t do anything for me but I love the monochrome colourway of the Pelagos which is only interrupted by that awesome red line of text and I’ve never really been a fan of the gilt hand and indeces which are a real signature of the Black Bay.
    Either would make a fantastic addition to any collection though!

      @antonylaing2499 Год назад +2

      Have you thought about the Citizen Challenge diver it's a fifth of the price of the Pelagos 39?
      I sold my Tudor Black Bay 58 as in my opinion the quality wasn't good enough for the price and the brand is over-rated, as it's usually falsely assumed to be a true manufacturer. The value for me didn't stack up, as I've paid more and got more and paid less and got more.
      After I shifted the BB58, I bought a couple of Sinns and the Citizen Challenge diver. I don't feel any urge to pursue the Pelagos 39, my Citizen keeps better time than the BB58 did, it's made of titanium and as far as everyone around me is concerned they're both just retro diver's watches.

    Totally agree! I much prefer the BB58 look. The clasp, the look and weight of steel, the dial and bezel, the lume, etc. Everything I prefer on the 58. The Pelagos is technically a better watch and the price shows that. But I’m design first so it’s the 58 for me. You can find them lightly used for under $3000 now. The Pelagos is hard to find new and over retail used.

Hmmm… So I guess I’ll take the BlackBay 58?! Thanks for the great comparison

  • @rssbrry

    I think I would go for a Black Bay 58 in blue over either of these. The Pelagos 39 is a little dry and modern for my tastes (although I love the titanium), and the 58 in the black and gold color way looks a little old fashioned. I suppose my preferences lie somewhere in the middle.

  • @gurtana

  • @jamesminshall4601
    @jamesminshall4601 Год назад +4

    I’d say neither. the pelogos 39 left me cold as it’s lost a lot off the charm off the original, it might be better if we get a more tool like look and a date, I think I would always be thinking I should have gone for the original and best version.
    I fall for the black bay 58 a bit more every time I see it but in 2023 there is no excuse for not having on the fly adjustment and it must be just a matter off time, give it a clasp like the BBpro and it would be superb.
    For now I feel the BBpro has them both beat but if they put a date on the 58 I may change my mind.

    Another top video Russel. Some of my stubby thoughts (a couple of escaped neurons hit each other and formed a thought). If you have a BB58, keep it, they are brilliant. If you don't have either then whichever one you get you'll be pondering that you got the wrong one and may well consider saving up for the other, although I would not sell one to get the other or you'd be back to the start of the sentence. As you mention both are different enough to live in the same collection, the difficulty here is which one joins the collection first. At risk of my brain collapsing in on itself another thought just registered. It might be worth adding the older bigger Pelagos into the mix. I have the LHD that echoes older times but could that live with a 39 as well? They are quite different in appearance and wear. Less so the RHD.

    Does that long slab like clasp stop the watch from rolling around the wrist by any chance? I tried both on. I fell in love with the black bay black. I am quite tall and have a 7.7" wrist. I tried on the Pelagos and my immediate reaction was this would look good with a lab coat, looking at it, is very clinical looking and cold, nothing warm and fuzzy like you say. I love your reviews. You have fun, but It's all about the watch and not egocentric as many reviews/reviewers are. It is about how the watch makes you feel as well as how close to perfection it is with regard to build. Looks and personality :) You are very good at describing both.

My sub is a Bluesy so it definitely has that wow factor but the BB58 feels oddly more elegant and refined. Weird thing is when I first got it I didn’t appreciate it like a I do now. It grows on you. One of things that spoil the BB58 for me is the protruding crown, it looks like the stem is too long & they had to put a washer behind it. Crown guards win. The non edged hour markers on the Pelagos aren’t as good as the BB’s. Aluminium vs Ceramic insert & one dot of lume on the BB, Pelagos wins. Better clasp size BB, better functioning clasp Pelagos. There’s always something to pick at. Good review!

    Great video. I agree with everything you’ve said here. I own both watches and both are amazing. I feel the P39 is a better every day watch, for casual wear. I always felt the BB58 looked a bit too dressy at times, but I think the BB58 is the more versatile of the two watches. You can wear it casual, but you can also dress it up in a more formal setting.
    One of the major improvements for me is the T-fit clasp. My P39 fits the wrist so well, and I could never get the BB58 to fit perfectly.
    The biggest indicator of which watch is right for me is how much wrist time they are getting. At the moment it is all P39. This might be due to the P39 being newer, but I’ve hardly had my BB58 on since buying the P39.

    If anyone wants a feel of an all titanium watch without breaking the bank, some Casio Lineage models can be had for ~ 200 €/$ ; the difference with steel makes a world of difference, truly an eye opener, one way or another whether one likes it or not (I know now I vastly prefer titanium). Also of consideration, more than 95% of the world's entire titanium production happens in Russia, and many industries are now facing sourcing problems. So in all likeliness, titanium might very well be renamed unobtainium real quick (the aviation industry gobbles the stuff like there's no tomorrow, and their pockets are deeper than yours). So if you like titanium, grab some now, prices are going to sky rocket.

    Can't argue with any of your points russ, spot on my man !!! Both are two small for me, I've got the 41mm bb . I've got the seiko sla043 , and that's under 40mm , but I wish it was a tad bigger, but I can't bear to sell it , as its a sexy seiko !!!

    I don't get it. The 58, the 39 (and the U50) are all slightly smaller versions of another watcher. OK. The difference is 3mm. 3mm is less than 1/8 of an inch. You cannot actually SEE the difference unless you hold them side by side.

    • @THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR

      Trust me , take a look at my U1/U50 show. There’s a huge difference . The 500m Pelagos is very big , it’s a slab on the wrist. If you don’t notice it in diameter your gonna notice it in height off the wrist TRUST ME

    Yes , the P39 isn't as versatile but probably better for all year wear, except with a suit ( I'm no Bond ) - but for that occasion there's the BB36...but it doesn't have the date (?- I need the date!)... er...

    Great review. It's a toughie....i love the full brush on the Pelagos case, but it's too light for my liking.
    The BB58 of which I have 2, is prettier to look at and would look better fully brushed.
    Under the covers, it's the same kiddie, so depends if you want refined or tool like.
    Weighing it up, the BB58 only just tips the scale.

    Great review! I am actually trying to decide between both of these watches. Think the BB58 has the edge for me with that vintage look and classic character.

    Love the video. Am currently on a list for a pelagos 39 rather than the BB58 because I love the resilience of a ceramic bezel.
    The thing is, you've had your 58 for 3 years, and you describe yourself as clumsy, and there wasn't a mark on the aluminium bezel in this video.
    BB58 owners, is the aluminium bezel really that robust and scratch resistant?

    • @rssbrry
      @rssbrry Год назад +1

      I would think that the top-hat crystal would generally make contact before the bezel, in this case. I don't own one though, so that's just speculation. Or maybe he's just not as clumsy as he lets on.

    Went to look at the 39, as it's my grail watch after the video.
    Conclusion: no it isn't. It looks dull/ too modern, could be any other diver. Chapter ring looks like a cheap citizen. That bezel action is rubbish, has LOADS of backplay. I tried two of them, one in Goldsmiths and one in the Tudor store. It's not good for a car-priced watch.
    I tried the Ranger on instead. And I fell in love. It's like an oldschool Rolex but with better sizing, and won't look like a dogs dinner when scratched at work.
    Russ you're so right, try these big purchases on first. What you think will work may surprise you.

    Great video as always. I'm a big fan. Just a little complain. It's not only you. This goes to a lot of watch reviewers on YT. The word Pelagos is pronounced on the 'e'. It's pE-lagos.
