Thanks for the how-to video Nick! Was concise & to the point. Appreciate it!!
Thank you for the support
Another awesome video full of great info.
Thank you for the kind words!
excelente short explanation on how to use your Garmin Charts Plotter
Thank you! I try to be as easy as possible!
Love the instructional videos. I’d love to see one about how to preform outboard maintenance on one of these large boats that’s not easy to put on a trailer.
I can absolutely do that! I think that would be very informative.
This was very helpful ☺️ I use this to navigate my Mangusta rev 165 throughout the islands of the Bahamas also the radar one was really cool
I am glad that you found it useful. That is a beautiful boat. What island do you keep her at? If you ever have her in the Abacos we'll have to meet up sometime!
Very helpful!! Thank you so much ❤️
Here to help!
Great video. Just what I needed!
Thank you for the kind words!
Like the content. More in depth videos on auto navigate, radar and high and low chirp sonar would be helpful.
I can make these happen!
Was watching this is notice, hey there’s Mathers bridge. Small world, I live on MI. See you out on the water 🛥️
No way! Come say hi if you see me out!
cool stuff. Garmin should hire you.😁
Make me their Bahamas embasador haha
Great tutorial.
Thank you for the kind words!
Great information thank you!
I appreciate it!
Great video! I found your channel last night and subbed. I left a comment on one of your other videos asking about Garmin vs Simrad. We are eventually going to look for a center console in the 30 foot range to be used for fishing offshore as well as on a lake in Georgia. We have been using garmin products for years now but only watches and hand held GPS. Obviously you use Garmin but my question is what do you think we should use? We are not very experienced in fishing offshore and want a system that has all the options but is also very user friendly. I've heard Gamin is the way to go but I wanted to ask your opinion. Keep up the good content!
Hey man! When you start looking let me know. I would love to help you. Ill also help walk yall through offshore fishing and the saltwater world. 3217207115
Best ever explanation at the start though agree with last comment. I would always route to or autoguidance to avoid rocks and land. But can you explain why autoroute always avoids narrow channels even though I'm already in the middle of one? It tells me to u turn and go all the way around via open water... where I don't want to be in a small boat! I have it set for closest to shore. The channels are fully marked and used by large boats. Tapping to re-route only adds detours. It won't route via the inland channel. (This is INLAND Great Lakes.. Georgian Bay in Canada.. Lake Huron)
Stuff like this is exactly why I hate autorouting, don’t use it, and don’t recommend it to anyone.
I use the Smart Modes every time I use the boat! They are very helpful111
I know some people do, I just do not and am not familiar with them and I personally do not find them too useful
Yes, I love the smart mode. Highly recommend using them. If you have multiple screens they are extremely handy. For example I have one for night mode, fog, docking and daytime. My night mode is configured to load all settings I use at night like flir window, radar and charts with my profile settings. My docking mode loads wind vane, rudder angle, and my rear mounted cameras. Love my Garmins!
@@dbrown308 Yea, Ill do the same thing with my screen and just set a combo screen manually to show what I want for various situations.
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ruclips.net/user/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
A new Garmin?!
Great info!
Thank you!
Thank you, very helpful 😊
Of course! I am happy to be a resource!
Nick, thanks for the great videos. Can you explain how to change the opening screen to a picture ?
I can! I am in Brazil now but once I get back to the boat in Florida I will do that!
Awesome video and information. Can you do a video how to set up Down View and Side View? Thanks for sharing.
Side view is not really something that most of the large offshore center consoles really have or use too much while reading 800’+ down
Thanx I now can enjoy boating much safer now.
I appreciate the kind words. Let me know if there is anything else that you would like to see.
When you plotted a waypoint and hit go to, it ran you over land, had you hit route, would it take you through the waterway safely then to the waypoint.
Re tides and currents, can you get the various current arrows superimposed on the nav screen, Showing the strength of current at that time and location?
Look up 'Current Atlas' Juan de Fuca Strait and Strait of Georgia
Thanks
Yea, I don’t really like the autorouting though. I mentioned it in the video how I like and recommend plaiting your own course and going waypoint by waypoint. I just don’t like the routing. And I found the current information on the Garmins to not be very useful at all and that is something that I don’t really think is a necessity for the beginner boater so I just mentioned tide because it is the most useful
@@NickOlinde Here on Vancouver Island, we work the tides.
I’m just getting back into it after 25 years.
Fire and the wheel have been invented since.
I picked up a wreck of a 22’ Grady and have put 2-12” screens above the window under the T top.
Left one will be radar and gps rt one will be depth
Smaller unit stbd aft transom to keep an eye on the depth
Can you do a tutorial on colouring the various depths. Ie shallow is red and deep is blue
Have put an autopilot on that will integrate with gps so I can tap screen to add waypoints on a depth contour and have Otto keep me on that depth contour….supposedly.
Not tested yet
Thanks
Nick, You have the image of your engine screen at about 21:40 on the video. Can you post a clear screen shot of your settings for the engine screens?
There are so many options to choose from, I'd like to copy your engine screen settings for reference. Thanks...
I can absolutely do that. Next time I am on the boat I will snag a picture of my engine screens and post them up in the community section of my channel.
@@NickOlinde That would be terrific. Please let me know when you post it. Have a great day...
Nick, I’m not seeing all the options for modifying the gauges on the engine screen. For example, where do you find engine trim? Couldn’t even find engine RPMs. Which is there by default but if I want to add it to another gauge, I can’t seem to make it happen.
Thx
Great thanks
Absolutely!
Curious why you didn’t get into the auto pilot with go to or auto guidance. Guidance takes in account obstacles and other things. Maybe make a video on the difference?
Hey Stephen! I did go over go to where you can hit a spot on the map and the autopilot does its thing. I purposely did not do auto guidance because I wanted this to be an very basic course basically designed towards beginners and I do not think that they should be using auto guidance. I definitely could do a more in depth video on all that though
I have a pair of 8616s. On one of my displays i have waypoints on the Nav chart and also the fishing chart. On my other 8616 I do not seemy waypointson the nav chart, just the fishing chart. How do I get that info on my normal nav chart?
Very interesting. So the two screens are communicating but on the nav chart it won’t show anything, only the fishing chart? Send me an email if you want nickolinde@me.com
Do you have a video on the 742xs
I do not sadly
How do you adjust screen brightness? Is there an auto setting so it dims for running at night?
Tap the power button and you can control the screen brightness and day/night modes from there. Yes, there is an auto function for the Garmins.
@@NickOlinde Thank you for the quick reply. I'll give it a try later this week and let you know...
@@howard11792 Let me know how it goes!
@@NickOlinde That worked! I set it to AUTO and will adjust day or night... Perfect!
very useful but you forgot auto guidance who is a very nice ting to use !
I actually purposefully left that out because I myself do not use it and would rather plan my course manually. I am used to navigating in the Bahamas where local knowledge goes way further than a chartplotter does so planning my own course is more often than not more efficient and makes for a quicker route. I also think being able to manually plan a trip is a very useful skill that every boater should know.
What is the difference between "Range A" vs "Range B" on the radar. I can't find much in the way of documentation from Garmin?
How do you view a satellite image over your chart. I saw someone on RUclips did that.
It is in the overlay settings for your chart. What model MFD are you using?
@@NickOlinde Brand new 8617 XSV Garmin
@@MoviesSam When you are on your chart, hit options and then hit layers. It is in there. I think it called Satellite Imagery.
How do you turn off transducer to play with screen on land
If you go to your sonar screen, hit menu and then turn transmit off.
Do you prefer Garmin over B&G?
10 times over. B&G is basically Simrad with some more sailing functions. I have never been a big fan of Simrad products. A lot of people love them but I am not one of them in the slightest. My personal top two preferences are Garmin and Furuno.
I’m missing the waypoint icon on the bottom maybe you can help
Hey man! I am happy to help. Shoot me quick email and we will figure it out. nolinde@hmy.com
How do I change boat orientation
It’s in the settings menu
How do you remove a pinned item?
On the pinned screen you just hold down the pinned item and chose remove pin
How do you erase tracks?
It is the the settings. Clear Tracks
8622?
Correct.
Wip need more information
Like what?! I am happy to make more videos to show anything you want to see!
How about using the presets. I just discovered this and it’s a game changer.
👍🏽@@dbrown308
@@NickOlinde Excellent video btw. Like i said i love my garmin's but the howto's are lacking. Your video is very useful.
I'm old,it would help if you just talked a little slower
I will keep that in mind
Play the video in .5 or .75. CLICK the “gear” in the upper right corner, SELECT Playback Speed. Pick you preferred playback speed .
New follower/subscriber. Great video!Do all auto pilot’s go in a straight line or can you put a curved line on the screen that the auto pilot will follow?
Thank you for the subscribe! If you put in a waypoint and just hit go to then the autopilot will just go in a straight line to that point. All modern MFDs and autopilots have an auto-routing feature where it will automatically make a route with turns based off of the boats criteria and depth requirements. I personally never use auto-routing as I do not think it is really useful and I can do way better just doing it myself. Where I boat I know the waters like the back of my hand so am comfortable running through areas where the auto-routing would not send me.
