Finishing & Engraving

- Watch connoisseurs can identify an A. Lange & Söhne movement at first sight. Each component is decorated with its own specific type of finissage, whether or not it is visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback. No matter how small it might be, each part must comply with rigorous artisanal and aesthetic standards. It takes several months of practice just to perfectly execute a flat polished finish, while in chamfering, great emphasis is placed on assuring that the edges are not only bevelled to the same angle but also to the same width. A special type of finish is reserved for the balance cock: it is engraved with the Lange-style floral pattern that makes each Lange watch unique.
I can't be the only one who'd love to see a real time build of a A. Lange & Söhne, surely?
I'm lucky enough to own an 1815 Up/Down, and it really is a work of art. Even when I'm not wearing it, I'll take it out of the case and hold it under a light with a loupe, and I can spend a lot of time just trying to take in every detail. It's incredible.
This is an honor and a privilege to be able to see others do the fine methodical works of fine finishing, for us it is pleasing and very relaxing to do this work each day.
Thank you for sharing it, Lance & Patrick.
Art. This is why the watch is worth what it costs. Why do people pay millions for Picasso? In the end it's just some paint on paper. You don't buy this to tell time. It's art.
Yes, finally someone who understands it...
Thank you.
unbelievable out of this world quality.
A. Lange is the Best.
I've never seen the laying down of perlage, that was cool.
I need one of these in my life! Of course it’s not important but it’s beautiful!
I just love that video. So incredibly well-made.
Amazing why dont you make a long video so we can enjoy for an hour at least...?
Yes :D
Now to save up the 12K for a used starter model...
I needed to see this , thank you very much !
I’m sold , got to have one now
Astonishing craftsmanship!
Incredible!
This is one of the most satisfying things I've ever watched. (See what I did there?)
Amazing polishing!
If they keep working with this much dedication, they might one day match the artistry of Daniel Wellington.
Amazing
And....years of polishing little knobs to perfection.
Vostok Amphibia is decorated with a scuba dude. Beat that!
Superb.

Amazing sound too. Great video.
I'am sitting here with my mouth wide open.

Anyone know what that thing on the drill press was to make the circle patterns on the movement (1:48)
it looks like some sort of sanding sponge, probably made for the purpose
Its some sort of "cutter" whether its a tiny "end mill" or an "abrasive cutter" aka "grinder" It's cutting tiny "chips" which are the "swarf" that end up around the "machined" area. Google "perlage" or "engine turning" tools and you'll probably find out. My guess is that its a tiny mill but I'm going to Google it and see how good of a guesser I am.

Almost as good as a Swiss watch
You're trolling, right? Almost as good, meaning "blows basically every equivalently priced swiss watch out of the fuckin' water."
There was no need for that comment. Lange makes beautiful pieces. That is a fact. Maybe you like Swiss companies more, I don't know, but there's no need to say that it's not as good as a Swiss watch. Because in my opinion, Lange makes the most beautiful movements of all companies.

Better than any Swiss watchmaker
Lange vs patek war
Germany vs Switzerland. Yep. That one is over before it "started".
