  • Thermit welding is a process that uses heat from an exothermic reaction to produce coalescence between metals. The name is derived from ‘thermite’ the generic name given to reactions between metal oxides and reducing agents. The thermite mixture consists of metal oxides with low heats of formation and metallic reducing agents which, when oxidized, have high heats of formation. The excess heats of formation of the reaction products provide the energy source to form the weld.

    I have been doing this type of welding sense the late 70's for U.P.R.R. Very little has changed except the cheaper versions of the process.

    Thanks. Was not aware that thermite included the metal used to fused the railtracks, Thought it was just used as an intense heat source. Now I know! 😊

    So if I have a power source and materials at the location thermite welding offers no other advantages?

    In the United States, it’s spelled, “thermite.“ The vowel sound is a long “i”.

    I wonder how thermal expansion is handled when you weld the tracks

    • @horns1305
      @horns1305 2 года назад +1

      They dont. In the winter time the rail contracts and breaks. They add track to fix that. In the summer time the rail expands and they have thermal misalignments. So they cut rail out. And so on

    Carrying electric generator and a welder is way less than the huge amount of equipment required by thermite procedure....
