When my first wireless camera system's showed up at my door, i plugged myself into the equipment and I instantly saw the future. I told my friends in about 20 years you will see teams, race courses, huge prizes, betting systems along with televised media networks bringing a multi billion dollar industry to the fans, all they said was, "Vinnie i bet your right". About 20 years ago my first wireless video systems cost almost 2000 dollars, for that i got 2 full systems to set up two racing aircraft minus the aircraft, quad copter tech was not invented yet and i had to use a a fixed wing design for my model. The video systems that i bought were specked for about a 20 mile range, stable high quality video at close range is what i needed for the business model. Looks like the business model is still looking for that winning aircraft design.
Awesome idea, but it should evolve more, so the track can react on the pilot's achievements, and the public can be more involved to the show. You're pioneering the new kind of a sport here, don't make same mistakes as F1 did, which is boring as hell now. Make it powerful, make it kicking, clash real and digital worlds, create an amazing UX, while you can!
RUclips user " metalldanny " is hands down my favorite RUclips quad racer. Side Note: And I sure as hell wish people would stop referring to these type of craft as " Drones ". They're hobby grade craft that aren't flown autonomous and therefore don't qualify as " A drone ".
if you were to talk to someone 500 years ago they would wonder how your suppose to get a horse to run this track, when you tell them youll be flying a piece of plastic through it, at 100mph, while in complete control and not even looking at it, they would laugh or say you're a witch. Technology is amazing what a great time to be alive.
I watched this vid when it first came out, and again just now. Wow the sport has come along way since the video release. Not sure on the scale they were expecting, however defiantly in technology.
This is actually pretty damn good in terms of making people craft better drones for future usage. Mastering drones will probably give us an edge on future VTOL cars. Just maybe.
+TheCrook kids have sharper reflexes, it's just a fact. It's one of the reasons most pro gamers retire around 30yrs. I think in this case though the kid played it safe and thats why he won.
What an amazing course...and just think.... if you took your time and were really careful you would beat some of the fastest racers.... that crashed. The only thing worse than going too slow is going too fast.... ;-)
aeroliner750 or they could watch the giant video screens throughout the stadium that show the viewpoint of the camera mounted on each drone. That's a bit more interesting than being a spectator at a regular sporting event if you ask me
Can only assume you are talking about as a spectator at the event as at home we get first person views. At the track itself are monitors as Jelly Man said bring own goggles, none of which you can do at F1 (see the car pass at 150mph+, Nascar with big circles occasionally passing you by .. same goes for most sports with a circuit lol.
It would be nice if you actually showed more that some seconds of race footage and not only people talking in ridiculous fireproof overalls (as if you had any fuel there that could burn...) I remember being looked at like a freak when I tried this in the 90s... ^^ With NiMH cells, brushed motors, analog ccd cams with potato resolution on makeshift VHF transmitters and one of the first gyro modules that cost an arm and a leg!
I'm curious how they are going to film this so spectators can watch, I don't think filming the same as a NASCAR race will work. Also, I think the 4 Billion dollar industry is a stretch by 2020. This stuff is interesting, keep it coming.
+Bannanas22 You don't have to be curious, they had HD cams on the quads that broadcast a signal to a video receiver that a director displays on the stream and on screens around the track.
Legend Length You do realize I meant not everyone likes them, but some do and they still have a massive audience. And some watch just because they like motorsports in general, but aren't huge fans of F1 etc. I watched F1 and Rally for decades and wasn't that into it in general.
+Legend Length Except with drone races you have more risky track options since they are not manned, therefore crashes can be commonplace. Extremely technical and dangerous tracks can be developed, I'm pretty sure fire hazards may become commonplace. Flying around a track with some pylons would indeed get boring, but what about a track which requires flying through a gave, dodging a crusher, then an inversion over a pit of fiery doom? Granted, public interest will be tested, but as someone in the middle of it all, it has been amazing to see it grow.
This is really cool, better than those other nerd sports like e-sports which unlike this have no productive outcome. This kind of competition can do for commercial drone technology what the Schneider cup did for airplanes in the early 20th century, as long as these guys have the freedom to improve their designs every year some benefit comes out of this. Good on those guys in Dubai for supporting this, hopefully we'll see this again next year.
Actually, e-sports does have a huge productive outcome, the massive consumer market for gaming PCs and therefore high-end computer equipment is one of the big forces allowing AI technology to have the big leap forward it's currently seeing. People's computers are simply much better now and gaming was a huge part of that.

They could do so much good, but nope, lets build flower shaped islands, gold plate bugati's and race toys for 1mill. Awesome track, but why the F is the prize a million? Ruins it for me. Glad a kid won and not an overgrown one !!!.
"Pilot"
John McJohnson yeah...i mean people study for years and years to call themselves pilot, and these guys called pilots because they can fly a little drone with two joysticks?? fuck that...
Exactly what i thought.. and real pilots carry the whole responsibiltiy for hunders of people. It's a fucking disgrace that they really think they can be called "pilots"
jános kovaćik Haha have you flown one of these racing drones? takes an incredible amount of patience and skill to be able to fly it well
what is the correct term then?
Marcos Calderon Kids with toys
I am just finding this video now!! Pretty cool.
Dubai is such a fucking joke. This race pretty much confirms they have no common sense. They could do so much good, but nope, lets build flower shaped islands, gold plate bugati's and race toys for 1mill. Awesome track, but why the F is the prize a million? Ruins it for me. They're trying to make flying toys as prestigious as F1 when it simply isnt. Just ridiculous.
It says the prize is 250,000 which is still a lot for toys.
You are a joke
Eric B they aren’t really toys and it takes skill and practice
Looks fun as hell
drone race............... honestly, who gives a shit?
Ya this is sad racing planes is a sport and has serious risk on the line just to say the least
+Rory McCabe ... What? You went from talking about how drone racing is sad to how flying planes for a sport is dangerous.
+google sucks major dick why did you click on this video from the first place?
+google sucks major dick I know it seems ludicrous, but i can tell this is going to be a big thing down the line.
It will be, once people can actually afford to race them.
Cool! Line of sight with different orientations is a lot more difficult than FPV. 🚁🤟
TBf yeah, line of sight is hard af, I don't enjoy it as much tho
i can fly both los and fpv in acro mode i startid los as i build a drone but had no cash for fpv cam vtx googles so i flew losfor about a year then i tryed fpv. los has its hard bits and so does fpv getting used to the googles and feeling sick a bit when i first flew fpv id start off faceing one way and end up turned around and los for oreantation but i love them both but i dont los much these days
