+Teng Vang glad you enjoyed, but all my videos are real. No fake click cause this camera has a loud shutter, plus sometimes I feel like doing it, other times not.
This is the best review of this system in RUclips ! Thank you ! Hasselblad is such an amazing company ... Fujifilm should change their name to Fujidigital or FujiX as they keep leaving behind all the film in their catalog ... Great video again ! And cool watch as usual ;) Regards from London ! Como to London one day !
I shoot with my 503 Cxi all the time but I am a black and white film shooter doing landscapes and I have full darkroom. I also just bought a Olympus PEN f for my small lightweight travel camera and between the two and yes my iPhone I feel I have the best of all worlds.
bigheadtaco I have a way to small Manfrotto I need a heavier one. I have a 50mm and 150mm lenses for it and truthfully i love this camera. In September I lost my waist level finder and so now I only have my Prism finder. If you want you cans see some shots taken with it beware though I have some iPhone shots from Vietnam on there because my main camera a OMD EM-5 was stolen within 1/2 hr after landing in Ho Chi Min city. I had ten rolls of TRI-X 35mm and my iPhone. so I did what I could. plus.google.com/u/0/100228087210015561647
terry breedlove nice pics. Too bad about the taxi driver stealing your camera though. Yes tripods are those weird investments where many people hate making the plunge, myself included. However, over 20 years I've shot with my faithful Manfrotto and I think it's time to replace.
your all over the place mate...slow it down. thats a iconic camera and deserves a little more structure in your blog...and i was waiting for you to drop it...
I had the camera for 4 days while working on 6-7 other projects, plus I was sick the entire time I had it so I struggled taking pictures with it and reviewing it properly. I typically have a camera for weeks before creating a review, but I didn't have that luxury. I will re-review it when I'm back in Hong Kong
I love the idea of this. I wish the price would come further down. Considering that a new Pentax body or the new Fuji are much, much less money, it seems like this should cost as much as a FF DSLR, not several times more. I wish I had one tho
yes the price is still expensive, but with the success of the X1D and the upcoming Fujifilm GFX system, the price of this sensor should be further reduced with increase of sales across the entire industry. It was the same when full-frame 35mm sensors were super rare initially. As more manufacturers started selling them, it drove the cost down significantly. I'm confident the same will occur with the cropped medium format sensor.
Douglas Gottlieb yes it's still cheaper to shoot film if you're not going through rolls per week. Plus there's a crop with this sensor so you also lose the intended field of view of the original lens. Another reason to stick to film unless a digital workflow is necessary for work purposes.
Enjoyed your video. But...you need to learn the "official" Hasselblad method of holding this camera. The camera is designed to be held in the palm of your left hand. Your thumb rests on the left side of the body, and three of your left fingers rest in the area on the right side below the shutter wheel. Then, you use your left index finger to depress the shutter button, NOT your right index finger. The right hand is used to cock the shutter, adjust the shutter speed & f stop, and focus. FYI - the X1D has a lens adapter to accept H series lenses (HC & HCD), but NOT Zeiss lenses as you stated.
When this came out, my choice was to buy it for my 500CM or the new Pentax 645Z. I went for the Pentax. If they'd priced it reasonably, I may have gone with the blad, but they didn't.
yes it was quite cost-prohibative when it first came out at $30,000 USD. It still is expensive, but the fact that no third party manufacturer has jumped on making its own version probably means there isn't much profit in something like this. The Pentax 645 system is great though. Congrats.
bigheadtaco the cost of the Pentax body was the same as this back at that time and as I had some lenses from my 645N2 it was the more obvious choice. Plus I couldn't get over what they did with the battery. Memory cards were integrated well, but they obviously forgot about the battery.
+Calvin Chann yes the battery compartment placement was a bit weird. It worked fine and didn't feel like it would fall off, but it was the only part that lacked aesthetic consideration
they are so cool, even now after so many years.... they need a bit of help though. Glad DJI owns them to infuse some capitol investment, although I feel that Sony would have done a better job
Does medium format film really have a better dynamic range than smaller formats? I thought dynamic range in film was more to do with the emulsion itself, not the size of the film?
Larger film format does not have better dynamic range. If I said that, I said it in error. I meant in the digital realm that as a general rule, the larger the sensor the better the dynamic range, although some smaller sensors can outperform larger sensors in some cases (based on the technology used). In terms of film, you get improved resolution and not dynamic range. Sorry about the confusion.
+Ali Shadpour it's great fun, as long as you have a solid tripod (which I didn't have) and a good light meter (I used a good iPhone app). You get a lot of attention too, which can be either good or bad :-)
...and saying that Hasselblad was the king at the times misleading. It was overpriced, so everyone mistook it as the best. I now have lots of Hasselblad equipment out of curiosity rather than desire. I now see lots of chromatic aberration in their lenses and as far as picture quality went, they were no better than any other medium format system around. I thought they were awkward, clumsy and ergonomically hard to handle...my favorite system coming later in the Pentax 67 line whose quality still was no better than the Hasselblad but much easier to handle. By the way, you also say that when film was king, so was Hasselblad. Yes but you were born later than film...so if you want to clarify that, I would say Kodak was king in film while Graflex was king of cameras...before 35 mm became popular. 35 mm became popular because you could get near the quality of Graflex style cameras but without having to carry around those 4x5, 5x7, 8x10 and 11x14 monsters. ...and remember, a big reason Hasselblad cameras and others were so much more expensive, was because of the currency exchange. Germany took off in the 60's, (or sooner), in the money value game and Sweden and Denmark were no different. So keep that in mind when you think of the old saying..."you get what you pay for"...Everything is relative.
I've posted two reviews on FujiLove website already on the XF 35mm f/2 WR, but I do have a video in post production now. I'm a few videos behind and won't come out for a couple weeks still.
You never even used the camera in the "review." One of the reasons I watch your channel is because you typically don't just sit there and talk the whole video.
+roadracer247 what you mean is you never saw me use it for the review. If you watch my vlog series you would have seen me using it. It's not easy shooting videos alone and this is the best I could as a one person team.
film medium format can be found for under $1000, especially if you're willing to go way back to the 1950s or earlier. The Kodak Brownie is a medium format, and is probably less than $200. However, for a decent film medium format, the Fujifilm GS645 or GA645 is in the $500 price range. It's a fixed lens rangefinder style, but these are the types I prefer. You can also find twin lens Yashicaflex or Ricohflex for under $1000 as well.
Get a Yashica MAT124. Or a Pentacon Six. Or a Bronica SQ. Or a Rolleicord Vb. Or a Zeiss Ikon Ikonta. Or, or, or, or, or....... There are so many medium format cameras on the market and each and every one of them can blow the newest film Leica with the most expensive ASPH Summicron out of the water if you want to pixel peep.
nice videos, most depending of yourself :) (with that i mean im so tired of all "flash"/"be cool"/"look at all my money" - youtube channels............which your not :))
You have your tripod,no camera girl? Then whose reflection(big afro) we can see in hasselblads back reflection? A giant Tree? Jared Polin? Not good,ne,ne....
I didn't say anything about your wife :-) I have just mentioned somebody behind camera... Maybe is really only gigantic tree,HK redwood or something like that.Yes..redwood.
Nothing sounds cooler than that old Hasselblad shutter.
True true
Finally a real video. Great intro too. No fake clicks - great. The ultimate back for my Hassy.
+Teng Vang glad you enjoyed, but all my videos are real. No fake click cause this camera has a loud shutter, plus sometimes I feel like doing it, other times not.
Show us how it works.
“Film will never be back to where it was” 😂 #Hindsight
That would be a nice back on my 503 but the widest lens I have is the 50mm I wonder what it would be in that smaller sensor size.
This is the best review of this system in RUclips ! Thank you !
Hasselblad is such an amazing company ...

thanks. Would love to visit London.

that's great. What type of tripod do you use and what finder do you have on your 503?

bigheadtaco Thank you. yea that sucked because I lost so many opportunities for some fantastic shooting. Oh well next time I will better prepared.
“If you can pick up a used 500 body and lens for a $1000 or $1500…” I WISH!
The CFv back does not require a sync cable connection. Does it mean you can shoot c lenses or does it only work with cf lenses onwards ?
your all over the place mate...slow it down. thats a iconic camera and deserves a little more structure in your blog...and i was waiting for you to drop it...

bigheadtaco I hope those prices come to a V series back. Til then, it is Portra, Ektar and Acros for me! :). Love your videos!

I agree! At least the $10k GFX 100 has autofocus. I wish the price would come down.
Not a step up in "dynamic range" if you were using film stock because it would be the same as 35mm. Otherwise fun vid.
you made me just spent 10K on BH.com....

Hopefully you get to test the new one
Me too....
This is like the coolest camera system ever. Take that Leica! 😂
yes it's very very cool

bigheadtaco No problems. Thanks for all your great videos. I hope we can see some more of your film shots from HK.
+Richard Harmer yes I have two vids specifically for film.
Richard Harmer dynamic range isn't going to be better on bigger film (which it would on digital) but tonality will be better
cheng2006 Thanks... I thought so.
nice review. wished there were more sample photos to see tho.
+DaDonFather thanks for watching. I've included at least 12 sample images in the video, which is about average for me.
bigheadtaco Thx for your effort. I guess I just wanted to see more to appreciate what an expensive back like that can do. Wasn't complaining tho.
look at the dynamic range! Sample pictures are great! wish I could shoot with it for a day just for fun!🙂
+Ali Shadpour it's great fun, as long as you have a solid tripod (which I didn't have) and a good light meter (I used a good iPhone app). You get a lot of attention too, which can be either good or bad :-)
Tech note 1st back was 12 A designate auto 12 counter much later

Wow. I wish I could get that 17 minutes back.
always wondering how to hold a Hasselblad properly?
as it is a box with no handle
so true!
ah I missed your videos man!
Stop the chatter and show us how it works for Gods sake before i full a sleep ?? Zzzzzzz
Nice review on the camera & digital back.
thanks!
CCD or CMOS sensor?
It's a CMOS sensor, but not as good as the latest CMOS sensors.
3:45 Why does medium format film have larger dynamic range than 35 mm film?
+jesperlett I meant for digital not film. The biggest advantage of medium format film over 35mm film is resolution.
Okay, yes. It makes sense. Thanks!
Bit of a rambling video...Lost the will to live about half way through.
3 clicks?inconsistent haha 2:52 what a boss
+T Woo I think I've done up to 5 clicks in a recent Leica MA video. I stop when I feel it's enough :-)
5000 to 10000 $ weddings in the 80s? :O
Your talking voice sounds like John Malkovich! :)
total complement, but I was also a bit sick so maybe it was an accident?
it was meant as one - He is the best! I've been watching your videos (they are great) for a while and it just clicked who you sounded like.
Bo Dez ha ha, thanks.
rambling on and on and on and on... Just show how it works. We all know that the front half is old
Rude
review on the new fujinon 23mm f2 please!
I've posted two reviews on FujiLove website already on the XF 35mm f/2 WR, but I do have a video in post production now. I'm a few videos behind and won't come out for a couple weeks still.

I wish I could afford anything within the medium format realm, digital or film. SIGH.
film medium format can be found for under $1000, especially if you're willing to go way back to the 1950s or earlier. The Kodak Brownie is a medium format, and is probably less than $200. i rather buy few fuji cameras and some lenses with that cash.
nice videos, most depending of yourself :) (with that i mean im so tired of all "flash"/"be cool"/"look at all my money" - youtube channels............which your not :))
ha ha, I don't take myself too seriously so that's what you get on my channel
Nice :)
You have your tripod,no camera girl?
Then whose reflection(big afro) we can see in hasselblads back reflection?
A giant Tree?
Jared Polin?
Not good,ne,ne....
This was a work trip so no wifey on this trip.
I didn't say anything about your wife :-)
I have just mentioned somebody behind camera...
Maybe is really only gigantic tree,HK redwood or something like that.Yes..redwood.
Danijel Grahovac ha ha, maybe it's my big head? Or maybe it was a big tree.....
Next time hold the camera still while you're talking so it stops me from feeling sick.
Please, not again !
BLA BLA BLA . Ya CALLATE AND TAKE PICTURES.
*blah blah blah*
Wow this is terrible. Waffle
