  • Street Photography with a Hasselblad 500CM.
    In this video, I walk through the city documenting life on the street and the people of Toronto with a Hasselblad. It’s a very different experience shooting with a larger, medium format camera when shooting street photography. It’s much slower and is perfectly suited for making street portraits. Often a discussion piece, people are intrigued to see such a camera among all of today’s highly sophisticated, computer aided gear.
    My name is Carmine Groe.
    With street photography, my goal is to enjoy the process in an open and honest way, to make connections with strangers while making their portrait as well as capturing candid moments of every day life on the street.
    My Gear for this video:
    Hasselblad 500 cm
    Carl Zeiss 80mm F/2.8
    Phase One P25 Digital Back
    Thanks to Tony Lei for capturing the Video

      Thanks for watching Cao! I approach people, tell them who I am and that I'd like to make their portrait. Most people are flattered and are willing to. I always offer to send them pictures as well which helps. If you have a business card of some sort, that helps even more with the trust factor. Good luck!

    At least you are not like Bruce Gilden. He is something else with his approach in taking pictures of complete strangers especially with his flash "BAM" close right in the face!

      Helge Frisenette I love film too! Nice to have the flexibility of film and digital with same system. The real strength of the hassie is the form factor and way it allows me to shoot and engage with portrait subjects. The rest is just technical stuff, which in reality is so much less important in my opinion.

    Hi , I enjoy watching this video . Will a 120 film creates softer look ? I feel the digital back gives very sharp look . Have you done any comparison between film and p25 back ? Thanks !

    • @CarmineGroe
      @CarmineGroe  3 года назад +1

      It really is not always about sharpness. Film and digital are different processes that give a different experience and a different result. One is not necessarily better or worse than the other. Film means you will be more selective, shoot less and think more. That is the real and only significant difference.

  • @canturgan

    I used a blad for street, it was a bit cumbersome but people were looking straight into the lens because there wasn't the feeling that you are looking directly at them and they are not sure what you are doing.

    • @CarmineGroe
      @CarmineGroe  5 лет назад +1

      canturgan Yes, you are so right! The approach and therefore the result can be different because of the shooting method of these cameras. It’s one of the reasons why the great Diane Arbus, for example, switched to medium format at one point in her career; to gain a formality and closeness with her subject when making portraits. I love the waist level finder!

    • @CarmineGroe
      @CarmineGroe  5 лет назад +2

      Michiel Siegers the downside of an older digital back like the Phase One P 25 is the low light capabilities. Amazing image quality at 50-100 iso but don't go higher than that. The more current ones obviously are more flexible but cost big bucks. If you're after superb quality where you can control the amount of light you have, you won't be disappointed.
