  • My favourite designer and non-designer alternative bags for college, university or work/the office.
These bags are all premium quality, you’ll look very put together in them! But they don’t have the big logos that can sometimes attract the wrong kind of attention in the office or in lessons.

I agree. I feel like many people I know who are into more expensive bags often look at the brand as targeted towards a stylish person over 55 y/o...but there are definitely some items that are ageless.

I own a small Sophia bag. You can say that it was my first designer bag and it really sets the standard for quality. The leather is thick, supple, but hard wearing and the craftsmanship is exquisite. And it is very understated as there are no screaming logos. Only the clasp gives it away to those who are familiar with the brand. I also find it easy to style because of the shape and color as well.

My experience is actually quite different. I’m a male and three bosses in my function (area, region, and compliance) are all fashionable ladies and my designer items/ fashion actually caught their attention in a good way and open conversations and they become much more friendlier to me which is good for my career advancement because it helped me build a relationship with them

For me personally.. What has drawn me to luxury and designer bags is quality of materials and craftsmanship. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. When I was in college, I studied abroad for a semester in Florence, Italy, and I was able to visit some workshops and see amazing art being made firsthand, and I have just a huge respect and admiration for the skill and dedication behind the craft. I've been using FURLA bags for office work for years now, I don't want to sound biased but the fact is they're so well made, so practical, convenient and hard wearing! The Piper and the Metropolis range are excellent as work bags! Dear Sophie, thanks for your vlogs! 😘💕

In south Florida finance work culture if the women didn’t have a nice bag you were looked down upon. Same for men with suits/watches. When I started I got a second hand Chloe drew bag to fit in.
From what I learned is that if you didn’t have it, it was because you weren’t doing your job practices at home. (Build wealth) Even when we get promotions we have to get our credit scores checked. If your score was under what the position or clients you want to work with. If it was low you didn’t get them. They’d tell you work on your debt then apply again.

Be careful of the Sac de Jour of what leather you get in in - avoid the beautiful, buttery lamb skin at all costs! I pushed my mum into buying one a few years back, and I’ve felt guilty about it in the 5 years since: it scratches so easily, it is absolute _insanity_. You could touch the face of it and it scratches, but because of its rigidity, any tiny nick will be seen. The corners see wear by the second, third time. It may be just me, but I feel like lamb sac du jours hold up even less well than the lamb Chanel boys.

First of all that white lace dress looks very beautiful on you! 😍
Yea, I definitely agree with the comments you’ve made about buying luxury goods.. I don’t think, flaunting or showing off the item is a main statement I go by when buying luxury goods, because sometimes we don’t have time to care about that. I won’t say I’m not into spending money on branded bags and shoes, etc, because yes my eyes eyes sparkle when I see something pretty, but one of the reasons I like the brands I do is because I trust in their quality and the style is just, like.. something I’d wear. It also makes me feel confident to use the product, knowing it’s quality won’t let me down. But regardless, at the moment, I will only buy what I can with my capabilities and if it’s not within my reach, I’ll keep it on my wish list and maybe get a chance to buy it in the future.
Always was a fan of the Saint Laurent Sac de jour, and the brand itself, I do own one bag from Saint Laurent, it’s a burgundy tote bag and it’s very practical for anyone looking for a good university bag or on-the-go quick and easy to reach for your item bag. The leather feels nice and sits well on my shoulder when I use it. The sac de jour however, always gave me this beautiful elegance vibe and looks professional, definitely a bag which has been on my wish list. ❤️
I’ve currently come to love the Celine bag you’ve shown too. Looks very simple yet chic! It’s very expensive, but I’m sure the quality is worth its price. What colour would get yours Sophie, but it seems like you’re close to getting one yourself, I await for a vlog where you go into purchase the Celine bag😍

That Ferragamo was stunning. I like the Prada Tessuto Nylon Tote for work. It does have a logo but that can be covered by my arm or if I really don’t want people to see it, I put the logo against my body. I like the slouchiness of it because I do have to put it in small places like a locker so a structured bag could get damaged that way. It also doesn’t get dirty fast and is easy to clean. For paperwork I buy these cute accordion folders from amazon and they are probably the best purchase ever. My papers stay straight and they fit perfectly in a tote sized bag.

Great suggestions and yes, there is a bias at times that one may never learn about if one carries flashy/logo/designer merchandise. Not fair, but the reality of life. I tend to carry lower key bags- Celine, Jill Sander, Acne, Alexander Wang, or bags with small logos. I love your Aspinal suggestion! The last time you posted about this topic, I dug through my collection and resurrected a Trussardi from the late 90s! It is still in fantastic condition and most people in the US don't know Trussardi, so it falls under the radar. I think Aspinal is similar. Keep sharing your videos. They are a welcome treat.

Since I spend most of my life at work (!!) I’ve never shied away from buying expensive bags to carry day to day. I’m currently using a black Celine Luggage and it’s the best bag I’ve ever purchased. I think I’ve used it pretty much every day since I bought it in 2018 and it’s still in exceptional shape. I’ve got my money’s worth out of it and then some! Hoping to go for a sac de jour next or a Celine belt bag.

I never got the Senreve bags because I have had bags with a handle on one side and it drove me nuts. I could see right away 2 years ago how they would carry.....tilted! I need to get an aspinal of London bag though. I keep pushing it on my wish list. But it’s a classic design.

I recently purchased a Senreve Maestro on the resale market because of your recommendation. I purchased it to use as my work bag.... which I was using an LV Neverfull MM previously. I have not had a chance to use it as my "work bag" yet, but I did use it for a quick 4 day getaway, and loved that I was able to carry as a backpack. It does have a "lean" when using the top handle, but not in an overly annoying way. I personally feel the Senreve brand is still under the radar, at least here where I live in the US... I received several compliments on the bag, but no one knew the brand.

Always love these videos! I find that most people (who aren’t really into luxury or obsessively watch luxury content on RUclips like I do, lol) will recognize LV, Gucci, Prada and YSL or rather will know how much they cost. Surprisingly, my chanel classic flap is not recognized - and those who do recognize have no idea or do not even have any clue that the bags are nearing 10k!!!
Funny, I was treating one of my patients yesterday and I was wearing Gucci loafers. She complimented them and had asked me which mall I got them from. She was expecting me to give her the secret shop where I could get knock offs. I didn’t know whether to lie and say yes they are fake or tell her they are actually $1000 from the Gucci store. 🤷‍♀️

I have that same thing with the ace sneakers. I’m a sucker for Lux clothing. So I always have people asking were I got my top (Sandro Paris) bottoms (7 for all mankind). For example, since I’m in my early 20s people my age who work in a department store ask. I don’t answer their question because I average spend above $200 on any piece of clothing. I don’t want them to be like wow that girl is stupid to spend that much on a plain tshirt. But hey I’m in that financial position where I don’t have to think twice about the price.

Great video Sophie! I agree about no screaming logos for professional moments unless you work in fashion. When I worked for Chanel & YSL of course I went all out lol! A very affordable, well made line without hardly any logos, that make beautiful professional bags is Rebecca Minkoff. I've been buying her bags for years for work and play and I've loved them all. They hold up amazingly well! I just bought a Senreve bag finally on their big sale! I wanted to wait a while to see how people felt they held up. I love mine!!! ;)))

I work in the legal field and usually bring my YSL's Sac de Jour in grey when I have to go to important meetings. It makes me feel confident and look well put together. One day, I left the bag on my desk and my supervisor came up to me to discuss work. In the middle of our conversation, he didn't finish his sentence as he saw the bag. He, who is not into women's fashion, couldn't resist its elegance and unconsciously approached the bag to look closer and touch it.

For me, it’s always about quality over quantity. But also, luxury isn’t as expensive as the sticker-price.
I got my Lexus (2016 crossover) as a second-hand with 35k mileage while in uni for 40k (with help from parents), but more importantly, this is about the price of a average sedan. It drives/has been driving just as well as the new ones.
Clothing wise, I have been buying “luxury” for years, because good quality jackets keep for years and years and years, and Ive long since gotten my money back in terms of cost-per-wear... and again, it’s not exactly sticker price. I got my Chelsea Burberry trench on sale for half price, Canada goose for 15% off, etc. My first luxury bag was a mansur Gavriel leather backpack in Freshman year, And I’ve used it for 6 years straight (and get more compliments now than when it was new because of the patina that’s developed). And so on. Though they do have a greater up-front cost, in the long run, luxury may actually save you more money than fast fashion.
(You can always get luxury second-handed. Even dirt cheap at consignment and donation stores if you’re willing to invest your time into scrounging and take it to a tailor/cobbler/cleaner after).

I’m more into the subtle logos now anyway!! But as I work in healthcare I don’t have a conventional office job so none of my bags need to carry laptops or paperwork etc. All my bags are actual handbags and for are about town so I tend to choose silhouettes which are interesting or will accent my outfit in a cool way (something you look for when you wear the same medical ppe outfit everyday lol).
I really want a sac du jour but the mini as again, it only needs to hold phone, pocket diary and wallet/keys

  • @lolly2299

Love your honesty and sense of style Sophie. I totally agree with the Celine Box Bag! It comes in the classic (also known as medium), small and teen (equivalent to a mini I believe). The quality is amazing although my older type of leather (box, like with Hermes box leather which is smooth) is more prone to scratches but not the liege leather (newer kind) which is grained and doesn’t scratch easily. Cèline customer service is fab too!!! When I complained about adjusting my strap, tgey sent in my older style bag to Italy to have it conditioned and have the strap replaced with the newer style strap at their own cost. This is unlike any experience I’ve had with the halo brands.

Love this video! I have the sac de jour, it's beautiful but I don't use it as much as I thought I would because it's heavy! It's 1.5kg empty, then add a tablet, wallet, phone etc. and it gets pretty hefty. It's gorgeous though and amazing quality, so I'm keeping it. But the weight of the bag is something to keep in mind.

When I used vintage LV porte documents in monogram for work, I've noticed strange looks. Nobody noticed when I was wearing black birkin 35. So funny. Book tote in black leather works great for me and just got a GG dome tote in light brown and it's great too. And I'm a guy. You're absolutely right. Loud logos are a no go. But simple, decent bag is no big deal, even if it's designer.

Knomo London make great work bags. I find them to be minimalist chic and of really good quality. They also have a big range including laptop briefcases, back packs, satchels and even small crossbody bags that come in leather & nylon. And best of all they are reasonably priced for the quality.

I love YSL as well and they are priced very well in comparison to other luxury designers. I had the YSL SDJ in the large size and it fit ALOT the only downside was it didn’t have shoulder strap and the bag itself had suede lining so alone it had weight to it . I would advise to get one with the shoulder strap option!.

I am still very happy using my Senreve after your recommendation Sophie! My job is volunteering full time at a cancer center here in Manhattan so obviously luxury bags are in no way appropriate ... my Senreve carries my laptop and iPad and since I’m a walker for commuting I find that it works as a backpack ... I don’t quite understand the ‘tilt’ comments ... mine sits fine against my back.

For work I prefer a backpack as I have to carry notebooks; laptop, book etc often. But it is a struggle to find a good one. As the stuff I carry around is often heavy I don't want to add any extra weight... So although I love the Senreve style It just seems too much.
Any ideas what would be a good light-weight work backpack??

I bought the Senreve Maestro this summer during Covid. They were having an incredible giveaway where I scored their bracelet pouch for free! (so, you know I just had to do it).
The unfortunate thing is that I have not used it once and have no occasion to use it right now. My job still has me working exclusively from home. I also teach part time and classes have also been shifted to online.
This gorgeous bag is still sitting in the box it came in because I haven't been able to use it. But I do know once we are able to go back to work, that bag is going to be my partner in crime while I commute on the train to work. I never would have had that bag on my radar without your suggestions. Thank you, Sophie. You're doing a great job.

Designer bags I wear to work: Givenchy Antigona, Loewe Puzzle, and a couple of Bottega Veneta top handle tote bags. With the Antigona, I turn it so the logo is hidden. I think the Puzzle is incognito most of the time. My BV bags have no logo. The only thing that makes them recognizable as BV is the intrecciato detail on them. I generally don't carry a laptop or papers for work, so my criteria for a work bag is that it fits the items I need during the day, is comfortable to carry, and looks professional.
