They could've tamed things for the kids, but they didn't, which is why the show was able to last nine seasons.
Discord getting vaporised by Glimmer was the most satisfying shot of the whole show, I'll say that much. Sure he came back thirty seconds later, but it was still funny watching him actually taken off guard. It's possibly the biggest indication for me that this fight wasn't going to go his way. Discord really doesn't take anything as seriously as he should.
