  • Recently landed in England after a massive temporal incident; the Doctor is on the hunt to stop a new enemy slowly consuming the cosmos; the Eminence. And where should the TARDIS and his companions lead him - but to the 1970s - the site of one of the largest Eminence incursions ever!
And who should be lurking in the shadows - deep within the bowls of the Ides Scientific Institute - hidden - in the dark... experimenting... but the head of the Institute itself - one Doctor Harcourt De'Ath...
While talking about this episode (and, indeed, the Dark Eyes series as a whole) with a friend of mine - it turned out she'd not heard it and was interested in seeing if she should buy this episode. Posted this clip to show her what she's missing - I'll update anyone interested in what she thought if she doesn't do it herself lol
Just a note - I will NOT be uploading complete episodes; this is just another in a series of my favorite clips.

Love the subtle tie in to the modern series, with the resurrected Master. (The predicament was probably the Master's state as a body hopper.)

    • @2Scribble

Actually it's a reference to the TV movie - after the Master escaped the Eye of Harmony he kept jumping bodies until his Time Lord essence started to collapse. The Time Lords were experimenting with resurrecting their greatest heroes from the matrix for the Time War and repaired and resurrected the Master's essence partly in order to ensure his service to them - AND to use him as a guinea pig. The Master was just too stupid and conceited to realize he was their first real soldier for the upcoming conflict.
This story takes place during the Dalek/Time Lord cold war that took place during the original series of Doctor Who - as referenced by the encounters the Doctor had with the Daleks and Davros during his Fourth, Fifth, Seventh and Eighth incarnations.
Full blown conflict - the actual Time War - hasn't started.
      Yet.

It is neither of those things. Though, this predates the story by several years, the more recent story "Day of the Master", actually revealed both the Master's original death, and his ressurection.
The first thing to remember, is that the Tremas Master, the Serpent, and "Bruce", the Eric Roberts Master, are all the same regeneration; just wearing different skin suits. A little like a Slitheen, but with more cosmic power and fewer zips. It is possible for that body to be destroyed, reverting back to the "Crispy" form; The Master who appears in the Audio book Dust Breeding, is played by Geofrey Beevers, but is later than the "Tremas Master" having simply lost the Trakenite Body along the way. Eventually, he would escape execution by the Daleks, by possessing a Skarosian Death Wurm (The snake like creature seen at the beginning of the Movie) and become the "Bruce Master." This version would escape the eye of Harmony by filtering into a spare room of the Tardis, which the Tardis Promptly ejected into the Time Vortex, where it would go on to have a few further adventures. Eventually, he would lose that body too, and become the "Crispy" Master once more.
This master, would *finally* meet his final end, on the planet of Parrak; destroyed by a Time Lord eating species, known as the Ravenous, in front of the 8th Doctor. (This event is shown in the Audio Story: Planet of Dust)
However, he would be resurrected moments later, by a trio of Time Lords. Injecting a fresh regeneration cycle into his rotting corpse, triggering a regeneration. It was a success, and this Master was born. He wasn't resurrected from the Matrix, but by his body directly.
However, the Audio this Master first appeared in, was released in October 2012, and the audio revealing his regeneration wasn't released until 2019; so for a long time there was only speculation
Want to know where it gets twisted?
The Trio of Timelords that this Master remembers resurrecting him? They were none other than his future selves: Specifically, Bruce, The War Master (fresh from the Time War) and Missy. The Regeneration cycle used to resurrect him, had been granted to the War Master, in exchange for his help acquiring the Brain Print of Artron, one of the Ancient Time Lords. He surprised the Time Lords by not using it himself.
The Master shown here would abscond from Gallifrey again, even working with the Daleks at one point. Eventually however, he would regenerate into the War Master, in time to enter the War Properly. He was rather good at it, with enough victories that he was nearly granted a state funeral with full military honours when he faked his own death as part of a scheme. However, the War Master would eventually find the Time Lords too restrictive (especially prior to Rassilon's Resurrection) and would inevitably betray the Time Lords believing they lacked the stomach to finish the war. Though he would prove to have sourly underestimate them.
This betrayal was particularly stinging to Romana and Narvin who had ordered his use, as head and deputy head of the CIA.
Leela was assigned to keep an eye on him (having fought him many times) and the Master shoved her into the Time Vortex, nearly killing her, before beginning a private war against the Daleks, killing anyone - including fellow Time Lords - that got in his way.
Narvin and Romana would believe Leela to be dead, before meeting her again after the two were exiled from Gallifrey for attempting to Assassinate Rassilon. (Though that's another story entirely), resulting in the destruction of the CIA.
The War Master would go to try to win the war on his own terms, clashing with both Kate Stewart's UNIT, and River Song. (Which he nearly did twice, once by breaking the Time Lock on Skaro and murdering Davros as a young man, becoming the Creator of the Daleks himself instead, though this was reverted: And again by activating the Heavenly Paradigm:The Paradigm was a Time Lord Device that could alter the timeline of the entire universe, (but with impossible power requirements to actually work.) He managed to fuel it with a multilayered Paradox, and instructing the machine to create "a better universe". While the Paradigm at first appeared to be working as intended, resurrecting entire races and worlds throughout the universe, the Master's request simply proved both far too vast and far too vague for the Paradigm, and the changes rippled out of control. One such change was the loss of the Cruciform; which the master was directly responsible for. The first genuinely altruistic act of his career had resulted in devastation incomprehensible. The Master fled, and ended up on Utopia.

-This is possibly the first time the 8th doctor has met a version of the master in sync after the events of the tv movie.
-But this is not the first time the master has seen the 8th doctor in sync since the events after the tv movie, as in Day of the Master, Eric Robert's master meets the 8th doctor for the first time since the events of the tv movie. And as we see he later loses that body reverting to his natural Geoffrey Beavers crusty master who is dying. Then he is given a new regeneration cycle by some mysterious people and regenerates presumably into this master who meets this early version of the 8th doctor who hasn't seen the master since the tv movie.

Actually it's a bit of a series in-joke that Unit's founding and the Third Doctor's involvement with them is constantly incorrect
