the way you put your tank together looks like its bought from a shop, everything fits well mechanically and aesthetically, awesome craftsmanship joey! keep up the vids!
Hey joey, me and my friend are building a tank just like yours but it has different dimensions. We were just wandering if we should use 3/4 inch glass or 1/2 inch glass? Or if there was a way to use acrylic. The tank dimensions are L96" H36" W24". Thanks for the help!!
as your video's show you do a lot of planning...why would you wait until this stage to plumb for filters...when pre-drilling before you seal the tank w/ pond seal would allow the exposed surfaces from drilling to be sealed at the same time as the inside....why trust a rubber bulkhead gasket to keep your wood dry...
Loving the style and the total build you have going here. Tho one thing I would have to add here seeing this video. Having your drip system under the tank in the stand area I would want to seal that wood as well due to evaporation/condensation in a closed area. I know it's not a must but I would want my tank stand to last as long as the tank it's self.
Joey you may laugh at yourself back in the day, you were very relatable, very capable and you gave many of your followers, the confidence they needed to do what you did. Great project!!
Following this thread. Love the build. I'm going to start building my own. I am a carpenter, but seeing some of your methods is going to help with my builds. I'm curious though... how much did this tank weigh without water? The stand too..how much did that end up weighing?
Awesome job as always Joey ....I've been looking forward to seeing it completely set up every week now and can wait to start my own slightly smaller version of yours . Keep up your amazing work
Awesome no other words can describe it. I do have a few questions. How come you don't make the holes first and then waterproof the tank and not risking destroy the pond armor, And the dripping to the filter, won't it be noisy? And have you considered making your book in different languages, I don't have any problems reading English but I would definitely prefer Danish if I could. plus I think it could help a lot people that aren't that good at English. if they had a guideline in their own language, it would give them the courage make a tank by themselves.
paw rasmussen It didnt really matter if i did it before or after as long as i was careful. Doing it later also allowed me room to change my mind. I have thought about have the book translated into several languages, however translating a book that size accurately is extremely expensive. (Thousands) If i did, the odds of enough people buying it in the other languages to offset that cost is low.
Great video. You put in all the hard work and effort into it and now you get this amazing plywood tank. I like your channel because you always update videos on the exact date you mention, every Sundays, unlike Solid Gold...
DummyWaiho Thank you. It wasn't as much work as it looks. In fact, it was a relatively easy build. As for consistency, I have been uploading Sunday videos for years now. With that said, its not easy to do to say the least. Solid Gold has devoted a ton of time and passion to her channel(which is obvious) BUT I believe she has just moved across the country and took on a new job. Being consistent with videos is the last thing I would expect from her.(Give her a break) I am positive that once she is settled into her new surroundings and finds balance, she will be right back at it. Until then, enjoy some of her older videos or re-watch a few. Two years ago, i went through a big life change as well. I didn't make a video for over two months. RUclips was the last thing on my mind. Life happens sometimes... I would encourage you to support her when she is down and be there for her when she bounces back... Just like she was there for you, week after week when making her videos. :)
very nice! ive been watching all your videos.. i also love fish since i was a kid til now. i really love the wood aquarium you made. that is new to me.
King of diy . I need help can u show how to make a stand for a 20 gallon but for a 10 gallon aquarium to fit on bottom . The 20 gallon measures 24×12×16 and the 10 gallon measures 20×10×12
Amazing series. I've learned a lot and planning a similar build. One question: shouldn't the holes you made for the bulkheads also be coated with pond armour?
Hey Joey did you get nervous when you drilled the tank? The finished product looks so good I'm not sure I'd have the guts to drill it after putting in all that work!
Brendan Cavalier nah, I have drilled many tanks.. acrylic, plywood, glass.. Once you do it enough, you get a good feel for it and what to expect. Plywood is the easiest.. not a whole lot to mess up. Acrylic would be next but you have to be careful and watch for melting. Glass would take the longest to do, but there are just a few extra things needed and a diamond drill bit. No big deal though.
I'm curious, Joey. How much did it cost you to build and all? Awesome videos and a series I've been waiting for (always have been interested in plywood aquariums, but never could find a great series like this). Thank you!
i think the only thing i would've don differently would be the water change hole. in short, make it at a height to where it lets out 20-25% of the water. that way, you can just do a 20% or so change at a time. and youll know the exact amount. then again, yours will come in handy in the case that you ever need to drain the tank quickly
I have a 90 gallon tank with a wet and dry sump with a set up like yours. I have found that the water is very noisy coming down the drain pipe. How do I make this more quiet?
Inspirational and great watching. You've inspired me to start renovating my own aquariums and following you through the DIY route. Looking forward to seeing the end product. Curious as to why you didn't build a plywood sump as well as the main aquarium?
reeferguy 101 I will be going back to film that pond from a month or so ago to see how it is winterized and fish moved. Other than that, i dont really have plans for a personal pond other than the odd thought of doing one.
Unless you changed is since filming, it looks like you didn't add a single union or valve to either of the two drains. Any reason why not? They would make future maintenance a lot easier since you wouldn't have to cut any pipe to remove a section. Ball or gate valves soon after the dursos would also let you do maintenance without having to drain the tank those 4" or so.
Victor Vazquez They are all straight pipes. I'll never need to clean them. There is only 1 elbow that is actually cemented on each pipe. It is literally cheaper for me to cut them when needed(probably never will need to) then to add a union. PS: I also left it alone as i may want to change a few things.

Been following your builds a long time now Joey. Really looking forward to see this one completed next week! Keep up the great work man. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Can a plywood tank be built as large as 24'x4'x4' . using a 2x6 frame with 2 1\4 thick plywood inside and 1 1\8 thick outside with 3 4x8 Windows of 1 1\5 acrylic ?
Webb Miller Hey Webb, you cant expect me to analyze such a massive tank with 2 sentences of information provided, let alone give an accurate run down in a comment. If you want a simple yes or no, you wont get one from me. I dont have enough information.... Something that large will take hours, days, weeks of planning. Sorry.
Hey Joey, random question, when you're measuring the length and width of the tank for the stand, do you build the stand to the width of the tank or do you include the width of the wrap also so it fits flush with the wrap as well?
Nick Musuraca Depends on the look you want. Some people like a flush look, so you measure including the wrap to get that. I prefer the tank to sit an inch "into" the stand so the wrap covers the bottom of the tank as well. So i build the frame to the size of the tank.
nearly 4 1/2 years later.. what ever happened to this tank.. I don't see it in any of your videos. Great idea for those of us with lots of space in the basement but very little space to get a big tank down there.
Loving the series Joey! Can't wait to see it full and running. Also, I am super interested to see the permanent lighting you build for this tank. Also, loving the podcasts and the app. Looking forward to the next episode of that too. Great work! Keep the content coming!
I am thinking about building a similar tank after watching this. I got one 560 liter tank with 160*50 it is 12mm glass so I was thinking about making it 180*70*100 in total size have the glass a bit higher from the "ground".
***** Oh I wasn't thinking about the pressure mostly about the placement so the sand would be under the glass only on the wood. Most tanks here are made out of that 12mm glass when we get to 1000 liter side of things. I was more or less wondering about making the wooden frame for the glass bit bigger then you have in the tank. You think 12mm glass can handle that? Or if I should buy one 15mm one.
I was wondering how heavy is this? I was thinking about building this, but I may be moving out in the next few years. Also, would I need to make it less than 36 inches in the width to fit it through the average door way?
BlueScarlet97 I put it on the stand alone. Two guys could carry it though. It weighs around 280 pounds. Turn the tank side ways(face down) and move it through the door that way.
the way you put your tank together looks like its bought from a shop, everything fits well mechanically and aesthetically, awesome craftsmanship joey! keep up the vids!

Excited to see the fish and the whole system in action.
AquaStudent Thanks pal.

After you drilled the holes and installed the bulks isn`t possible that the water leak just a bit and take contact with wood ?
Loving the style and the total build you have going here. Tho one thing I would have to add here seeing this video. So cool. watched the whole series learned so much. I have tons of new ideas. thank you. your vids are awesome

muffemod ;) thanks
WOW, the old Joey was cool too. So methodic and efective
If you can, can you provide the buy/cost list on the last video.
Awesome build. I'm thinking of replacing my scratched up acrylic with a plywood.
Such a great presentation and end note. Great speech
yep Thanks

Looks great. My only complaint is that you didn't use any unions on the plumbing, why?
Cool! I'm wondering when your doing on for a Betta barrack system
Cichlid Collectors Im not sure i said i would build one. I dont own any betta and dont plan on it. Perhaps i can consider building one though.
Thank you for sharing your projects with the world. Amazing job here again.
Salutations from France
boetti théo Your welcome! Thanks for tuning in!

jayme alcay Glad to hear it my friend. Sundays are my favourite day of the week!
Thank you for your time can't wait to see the finished result
the material you use for your lids. do they need to be weighed down or can they handle if the arowana jumps?
Good stuff! The suspense is killing me. You should surprise us and post the last video Wednesday!
Jason Lee No many would tune in. I dont post videos on wensdays so most would just come back on sunday anyways. ;)
That and i didnt film it yet.
Looking forward to seeing this tank in action!
Brian's Fish Tanks I hope im able to get to film it on time. Apparently the kids are having sleep overs almost every day this week.
Amazing joey what's we see inside discus or arrowana

yup

HardleyEvenGay I can always drain it to 20% and then close the valve.... Or 30%.. 40%..etc... all the way down to 80% :)
looks great cant wait to see the finish product next sunday
edwin Terror Im excited to talk about it finally!
Your overflow work good? It's look like a 2" pvc pipe?
I have a 90 gallon tank with a wet and dry sump with a set up like yours. I have found that the water is very noisy coming down the drain pipe. How do I make this more quiet?
A Big Thumbs Up!!
MrRvbrown Thanks Randy!
Best videos I had ever seen.
Can't wait till Sunday
I am looking at making a 100 gallon plywood taken but I am not sure how thick and how thing I off glass I can use. Thank you for any help or tips
Congratulations, excellent job! I can't wait to see this project completely fished. You're the best!
Armando Daniel Lovera Mandujano Thanks Armando!
Another master class video
***** :)
Inspirational and great watching. You've inspired me to start renovating my own aquariums and following you through the DIY route. Looking forward to seeing the end product. Curious as to why you didn't build a plywood sump as well as the main aquarium?
P&N Aquatics Well, i didnt need to build a sump. I literally have this 70 gal sitting in my garage for the last 2 years.
Nice and simple filtration. Can't wait to next week!
Luciano Sarno Simplicity is key. ;)
Is it best to have a glass or acrylic bottom rather than plywood if you plan to drill the bottom?
You make some pretty awesome stuff and iv put some of it to use. Pretty sweet tank you made can't wait to see it all together
Mark Valenzuela Thanks Mark. I'll have the last video out next sunday. :)
I'll be looking forward to it!
I look forward to my Sundays all hungover and always get a new video from you Joey keep it up yo
reeferguy 101 ughhh.. i rememeber those days! haha
Lol man when we gonna do another pond video brother
reeferguy 101 I will be going back to film that pond from a month or so ago to see how it is winterized and fish moved. Other than that, i dont really have plans for a personal pond other than the odd thought of doing one.
A+ work on the tank and video. So, do you think it's possible to go longer than 8' with a plywood tank? I'm looking to do a 12' tank
Дым огонь и вонь!!! Супер, молодец! Жду продолжения

I have one question will the pawn Shield stuff work for saltwater tank
Thank you very much
How long could one of these last as a saltwater aquarium? or is that not possible?

RaffM522 Maybe some day. :)
Your videos are awesome. Thanks for sharing.
molnas Thank you, glad you think so!
Do you have problems with gas exchange having a lid over the tank?
Did you build the sump to match the plastic tub dimensions or did you get lucky finding a plastic tub that fit?
Samy Ismael I bought the tub based on dimensions of the sump... Then calculated how tall i needed the tower to be to hold the media i needed.
Oh Joey, I've gotta wait another week ! Your killing me , I wanna see some fish :) ........... looking soo good though buddy !
OZZYTHEOSCAR Thanks oz. You will see fish in the next vid for sure. :)
great toturials! cheers from Denmark!
Been following your builds a long time now Joey. Really looking forward to see this one completed next week! Keep up the great work man. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
stealthyevil1 Your welcome! and thank you!!
Brilliantly made love it
Great work..well done
ahmed samir Glad you think so Ahmed.
Hey Joey, did you drill a hole in the top of the end-cap of the durso drain?
im excited for next weeks video!
I like how you set the series up this way... good idea man!
Joey,
I noticed you didn't use glue the PVC fitting together, is that because it is toxic?
+Mark Speir you got it!
awesome video's beacause of you made my own aquarium!
Rogier Prieshof Love it! Good for you!!
you are my favorite youtuber !!
I have a 40 gallon that I'm not using can I use this as a filter for that size tank?
Can a plywood tank be built as large as 24'x4'x4' . using a 2x6 frame with 2 1\4 thick plywood inside and 1 1\8 thick outside with 3 4x8 Windows of 1 1\5 acrylic ?
Webb Miller Hey Webb, you cant expect me to analyze such a massive tank with 2 sentences of information provided, let alone give an accurate run down in a comment. If you want a simple yes or no, you wont get one from me. I dont have enough information.... Something that large will take hours, days, weeks of planning. Sorry.
Why didn't you coat the holes of the bulkheads? If there is any leakage it will suck in the wood now?
White Bug Its not really needed. The bulkheads eventually got siliconed in place. These types of details are covered next week.
Hey Joey, random question, when you're measuring the length and width of the tank for the stand, do you build the stand to the width of the tank or do you include the width of the wrap also so it fits flush with the wrap as well?

Also, loving the podcasts and the app. Looking forward to the next episode of that too.
Great work! Keep the content coming!
Ken Parkes Thanks Ken! I'll get a new podcast out this week!
Great series of videos!! Looking forward to seeing the final tank next week!!
Is the stand covered with flex seal
Is it safe to use your wooden aquarium for reptiles?
Does the tote stay in place because it's slightly larger ?
Simply amazing...amazing!
blakebodaciousFTW Thank you!
Do you glue the plumbing?
I am thinking about building a similar tank after watching this. I got one 560 liter tank with 160*50 it is 12mm glass so I was thinking about making it 180*70*100 in total size have the glass a bit higher from the "ground".
MrRyusuzaku It wont matter how high or low you place the glass. it can only take so much pressure.
***** Oh I wasn't thinking about the pressure mostly about the placement so the sand would be under the glass only on the wood. Most tanks here are made out of that 12mm glass when we get to 1000 liter side of things.
Thank you!
I have a question about it I would greatly appreciate an answer. How heavy is just the tank with the glass included/installed?
ChaosGeneral1 about 280 pounds
I can't wait for the next video. Tank On friend.
Cichlid Nez Thanks. See you next sunday at 9am est!
Is this type of tank build safe for saltwater?
Joey please tell me! Do you used Just the front glass?
Looking forward to seeing it done!
