    Man, my wife and I were floored when we stumbled upon your videos and progress of this plywood tank! I have a 95 gallon freshwater tank in my basements for 12 years and my stock needs more room to enjoy it. I and am looking for an "upgrade" such as this. Excellent communication and skills! Very nicely done. You have resurrected my faith in youtube!😃

    As far as electric bill. A back-up power supply would definitely come in handy. Cutting 800w use, into less than half that wattage amount compared to if your equipment all was plugged in the wall outlets instead of the power supply. Long as the power supply kicks out 120v or more. Bonus part of having one is it includes: 10 outlet plug-ins, it generates more energy off the use of lower amounts of energy, it has a back-up battery inside, and the whole thing cost only $150(decent quality brands). So let's say your regular aquarium equipment requirements a $300 monthly electric bill. Simply having the power supply that has a small generator and huge battery it charges while consuming very little electricity from your wall outlets would be a good solution. The power supply also then shuts off the consumption of electricity from the wall outlet after the huge battery in the powersupply is charged. Switching to the battery back-up power supply energy till it gets to a certain level of energy. Then recharging itself again. It's an ongoing cycle of recycling electricity serving as it's own eco mode generator. So the purchase of a back-up power supply one time in your life would hammer your aquariums monthly electric bill down to about the $90-$130 range... Better than a T-Mobile 3 iPhone 7 family plan.

    To be honest when I first started watching this series, I thought this idea was sort of: meh.
    But this tank turned out to look really sweet. Especially with that fish and that lighting. It would be interesting to think of it with driftwood and plants. It would be a totally different look. I would consider this as an option, after watching these videos. Great job.

    • @thekingofdiy
      @thekingofdiy  9 лет назад +1

      Fish Behind Glass I have to admit, that i have never filmed a video with the intention to impress anyone. Obviously at the end of the day, the only person that needs to enjoy it is myself. However it is always a bonus when you guys think it looks good as well! :)

    • @FishBehindGlass
      @FishBehindGlass 9 лет назад +2

      ***** The single viewing pane was the tough sell for me. My feeling was that with no viewing from the sides it would take away from viewing the fish, which is something important to me as a fish keeper. I was happily proven wrong by the end of this series. It actually enhanced the viewing of this fish. It frames the fish beautifully. Since this is a look that I never considered before, your video series on this opened up my eyes to other styles of tanks. Not only that, but it shows that it's possible to do with my own two hands. This series was easy to watch and was very educational on more than one level. And for that, you have my gratitude.

    Lovin your videos! To quiet down the noise your overflows create, you should turn one of them upside down, add a valve to it and make it a full syphon, where as the second is just barely skimming from the top, that way you can easily take 90% of the noise away.

    • @thekingofdiy
      @thekingofdiy  9 лет назад

      Rami Huuskonen Could do that, but im not sure my sump could handle 3" of water from the tank flowing into it when the power goes out. I will have to do some testing. :)

    So glad to see this! I need a new Terrarium for my snake, because she has grown so much, and her first enclosure was awfully sealed ( I was a bloody beginner lol). Since this is a bioactive setup, I have a false botom, and with the last move of the tank, I felt the botom plate was simply smushing together. The Wood has just completely given up on the botom. I was so happy to learn that this pond sealer exists. Now I can make sure the wood is properly sealed for the false botom. If the sealer withstands this much aquarium water like in this Video, I think I am good with a simple false botom. I am also thinking about adding a little Pond area to keep humidity up in the tank and give my snake some stimulation. I ask myself if this Pond-sealer could be applied on Styrofoam/Foamboard, or if this would trigger a chemical reaction. It would be pretty neat if I could carve a fairly naturalistic Pond structure out of Foam and seal it with the pondsealer. I would probably add a sheet of pond liner over it anyway just to be a 100% safe. But just having the Option to get a naturalistic shape would be awesome

    I've built a few large tanks myself,but I always run my over layed side panels back past the actual tank box to allow an unseen hollow area between the tank and the wall,, (the outside dimension of both the base and the overall tank are slightly wider),,,and then my plumbing runs through the back and bottom of the tank,very much like a small swimming pool with bottom drains and varying height wall drains (fitted with sponge covers),, into a closed sand filter system drawn over foam and gravel to allow my anaerobic bacteria colonies to establish as a pre filter ,plus plant bedding and waste conversion point,so the sand filter was more burden free,but if the power ever went out,the system is completely closed loop .Then add adjustable discharge ports to get the desired water flow characteristics .I always have several hundred pounds of stone, large irregular flat pieces that hide my wall ports,plus give the fry an area to easily hide behind while feeding off the food particles drawn to the foam covered collectors(drains),,and that way they never have to venture out into the open tank area where they would be eaten.Also always lots of live plants in the substrate as well as floating top water plants,rock mound caves ,hidden piles of ultra fine gravel and sand mix tucked into caves at various tank levels to allow nesting and defensible areas . But I'm a cichlid guy,African,South American,,mix em all together,and with enough personal space areas,,they get along fine,and breed exceptionally well.....
    But your tank looks great ,,I think I built my first was back in 1980 or so and people told me that it would never hold water blah blah blah,,,and those were the so called experts at my fish supply house,,and the glass guy ,,,blah,blah,blah.....35 years and I would never build a tank any other way.They look great,,they last forever,and you only have one seal to worry about.

    Very good and informative series. Helps a lot. I'm thinking about doing this on a smaller scale for a Betta barracks/ display. I'm new to the aquarium hobby so I'm starting small lol. Great videos.

    How did you determine what thickness of glass to use? I mean I know there are calculators you can use but because those would be used for all glass sides but since you used only 1 panel does it still need to be the thickness by calculator?

    $1000 for the tank is pretty good! The arro looks fantastic under that light. Putting the light up front and dimming it down does give a great effect!
    How much can your overflows handle? You said 300 gph but that's definitely not right for a 2" pipe.

      AquaStudent They are side wall bulkheads so Im not creating a full siphon. If i were, i would get almost 5000gph out of the pair.

    in my opinion it looks beautiful as it is.. keeping it bare makes it more artistic... having some driftwood and java moss would only distract people from appreciating a already wonderful fish.. its not just an aquarium with a fish in it but a living art :)
