Hi, I’m unable to relax my jaw. One night my jaw started moving in circles on its own. Left, down , right , up and repeat, now it slides to the left or if I lean right it slides to the right . When I look up it goes down and when I look down It slides forward. My neck has been cracking a lot lately with the slightest movement. If I try to stop the movement my jaw starts to feel heavy and I get face pressure and my left shoulder starts to hurt. I don’t know if I should see a doctor or tmj specialist or my dentist . Hoping you could help.
Hello Dr. Mistry, this is Dr. Chandler. Absolutely love your content and clarity of presentation. I'm seeing a lot of young children who have bruxism. How would you treat bruxism in kids? Are there any appliances we as dentists can make? And what would be the effects if left untreated?
Unfortunately it’s hard to treat children with appliances when they’re losing teeth right and left 😊 still doable but difficult. with bruxism in children, I’m immediately suspicious of sleep disordered breathing. Consulting with a sleep doctor is a good place to start.
Just wondering... when I lay down on my stomach (face towards the bed), all the tension in my jaws disappear. Same, when I stretch the tongue towards the left (putting it outside my mouth), it really eases the pain I feel on the right side. Do these symptoms correspond to a known pathology, please ? I have asked several stomatologists and they don't really explain what is going on or what may be the cause.
@@theTMJdoc Thanks a lot, no problem. Just asked in case these symptoms ringed a bell. Any suggestion to similar known pathology is welcome and ofc, I know this is not an official diagnosis but just a posible tip.
Thank you so much. RDH and tmjd sufferer here for over 28yrs. Your muscle release videos are so helpful! NG only helps a little. Phys. Therapy helped some. your tips and tricks are soooo helpful. Do you teach for CEUs?
Hey Priya. I have a question about what the masseter's involvment is supposed to be when the jaw is at "rest." So the jaw is supposed to rest so that the upper and lower teeth have a small gap. In this resting position, is there some small amount of muscle activation in the masseters in order to keep the jaw elevated to that position? Or are they supposed to be completely relaxed?
Great question! Position at rest means when you’re not talking or chewing - lips together, teeth apart. However this position is not necessarily the most relaxed state for any of the muscles including the masseter.
Yes bruxism can cause tmj problems but it can also be the other way around. Just stopping clenching or bruxing could “solve” TMJD but it’s dependent on what caused it in the first place.
can orthodontic retainer trigger clenching or grinding? I have a retainer that I wear a few hours a day if I wear in at night I wake with jaw pain. But even without it I think I grind too but I'm not sure. I just can't handle pastic in my mound are there other treatments than moundguards?
One reason I would add for clenching/brux is having a deviated septum like I do and the constant mouth breathing over time ruining everything to cause TMJ from clenching and creating ear pain.
Hi! Idk what mine is but i clench my teeth while sleeping and in my dreams too. Everytime Im clenching my teeth while sleeping, I cant stop it, it only stops when im fully awake, it usually happens when my dreams are in a stressful situation... what type of dentist should i go to?
Here's a simple method that will show you how prevalent clenching occurs. Take a the wine cork and place it between your front teeth, horizontally. Experience the downwards closing. .
Sorry to be graphic but I notice serious problems after prolonged oral sex on my husband a few months ago . Could this cause TMJ? It’s been an ongoing issue for the last 3 months now
@@theTMJdoc I forgot to mention I just got all my lower teeth removed and got dental implants 2 weeks ago and before that I always had cavity’s n tooth problems
Every time you mention postural discrepancies it opens up a new way of thinking. The whole body really is connected.
Thank you! YES! Everything is connected!
Instead of telling yourself what not to do, tell yourself what "to" do.
"Hold my jaw loosely."
A coaching tip for athletes too.
Great advice!
I clench soo much at night and I have literally woken my partner up multiple times with my grinding :0 thank you for the tips!!

Sitting here with ice all over my face - gonna set an alarm. May use a Fitbit for this. Vibration instead of a alarm.
I hope it helps!!
Done it since childhood. Grind at night. Guards and all the efforts, never helped,so having extractions and dentures

I would recommend a tmj dentist or a tmj physical therapist.
Cavity in a tooth is making the tongue trying to touch tat cavity..Over a long period of tym can this process cause tmjd?
If you're straining your tongue and facial muscles, I suppose it could.

I have noticed lately that my lower jaw at rest kind of jerks forward for a second several times a day. What is this?
It’s hard to say. It could be because of muscle spasms.
hi, in your experience/opinion, what do you think is the biggest cause/contributor to nocturnal bruxism?
Please watch my video “why do we clench/brux” and let me know if you have questions!
Hi.. Today I just got involuntarily clenching of teeth and winking of eyes towards my left side could you help me get rid of it..
I cannot help you over the internet and without examining you in person. Sorry!
How do you stop teeth pain please help!
With a skillfully made TMJ orthotic.
DOES GERD, ACID REFLUX OR laryngopharyngeal reflux CAUSE NIGHT TIME BRUXISM CLENCHING???
Some studies have linked GERD to increased clenching and bruxing.
If you wear a retainer at night, will that lessen the effects of teeth clenching while you are sleeping?
No. I don’t have a solution for nighttime clenching.
@@theTMJdoc Thank you for taking the time to reply, Doctor.

If only I had a solution for this!
Is bruxing a cause for TMJ disorders? Do they always come along, who comes up first? If I stop clenching, can I solve my TMD? Thank you, Dr. Mistry

I don’t know of one unfortunately.
It’s hard to clench your teeth when your tongue is suctioned to the top of your mouth
Can I wear a mouthguard to help with bruxism when sleeping?
You can, yes, but it likely won’t help with TMD.
Can you talk about trigeminal neuralgia?
Please watch my video called “Trigeminal Neuralgia or Temporomandibular Disorder?” Lmk if you have any questions!
Great advice. Now, if we can just find that magic solution to help us stop doing it at night!
Yes! I’ll never give up!
Very informative video Dr Priya
Thank you!
I clench my teeth when I get energetic or excited, should I be worried?
I don't think you should worry, but I think you should stop trying to do this during the day :)
One reason I would add for clenching/brux is having a deviated septum like I do and the constant mouth breathing over time ruining everything to cause TMJ from clenching and creating ear pain.
Yes sleep apnea, sleep disordered breathing, mouth breathing and TMjD are all related..

Yes, because when my teeth starts clenching it uses alot of force.

I don’t have a good answer for that

1. Make sure you suction mew in your sleep
2. Dog this guys face exercises before bed lol
