@@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis Thank you so much! I was recently happy to find an oral surgeon who said Botox shots into masseter muscles would stop my night clenching ($1000.00/three months). I started having pain in my lower left jaw and sensitivity to cold liquids on the lower left teeth. I thought for sure I had a dental problem. Went to the dentist, they x-rayed the area and the doctor did all the physical tests his training teaches; cold water, air blasting, picking poking prodding and tapping...all of that. Couldn't find anything wrong. He said his best diagnosis was "clenching". He said he actually has this problem and sometimes wakes up with pretty bad pain and I think he said he sleeps with a mouthpiece. He asked if I had been especially stressed out, and it made me stop and realize I DID have 3 significant reasons, beyond everyday life, adding to my stress. Also, like someone below mentioned, I have frequent very aggravating dreams. Not scary, just seriously stressful...stuck in a place I cant find my way out of and trying to find things that I cant/lost...meanwhile everyone else in the dreams dont care, I'm the only one stressing. I never had this pain before the most recent stressors, and like this doc said, it had turned in to headaches and other pain beyond the teeth and jaw. Even before finding videos (just today decided to actually search this), awareness of the clenching has helped relieve some of the pain. You dont even realize you are doing it. I cought myself clenching as I typed this. You have to think about it constantly, or there you will find yourself, teeth clenched again. Meditation doesn't work for me and I've never been able to exorcise regularly and stick to it, so awareness and jaw flexing is all I have other than OTC pain meds, which I avoid unless the pain is really bad.
Thank you for this..I have been quite upset after finding out I'm grinding more and more and affecting my teeth moe even with a night guard. Blessings.
I've had a terrible bruxism problem for years on end...I actually do the step one often, but the problem is the moment I stop focusing on holding my mouth in a normal position the bruxism starts up automatically without me hardly realizing, it's like a mental glitch that I can't figure out...also having a lot of anger problems kind of exacerbates it. But this is good info, thanks.
consider mindfulness based stress reduction. There's a pretty good app that's free called headspace. There are many more though if you don't like that one. A therapist could help you with cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance commitment therapy. Also, manual therapy like chiropractic or massage can help. Good luck.
I noticed it twice while watching and practicing. As soon as I released my tongue from the roof I clenched. I never notice when I begin the clench but both times just now I caught it. I'm going to continue a few more min and put my guard in. The comments are encouraging.
Thank you so much, this was really helpful to me. 2 days ago I noticed my jaw clenching, but not grinding (i was doing some typing work that time), so i thought i must be stressed or anxious. I’ve done yoga, journalling, being grateful, deep breathing, massaging my facial muscles. Meditation is something i need to work on :) my jaws also click since i was 12. it minimized when i had my braces.
I randomly woke up with sensitive teeth a week ago. then I realised that it was my jaw clenching. I’ve been doing these various excercies for about 1 day and my teeth feel so much better. I can’t believe something as simple as jaw problems can change my life so drastically.
Thanks for the tip, very helpful. I suggest sophrology as a relaxation method (for those who don't know it). Very helpful and it can even help you fall asleep.
Stress reduction strategies throughout the days. Keep in mind, it takes time (weeks or even months). Examples are meditation daily, journaling, life purpose and meaning, CBT, just to name some. Best of luck.
Thank you for sharing with us these techniques. I'd like to ask you a question related to my condition. Well, I don't know if it's bruxism anymore - I know I had it for some time, my friends were telling me I was clenching my jaw in my sleep. But now the problem is...my body's response to stress is that it makes my jaw clench even during the day. In this stressfull periode, my jaw is always so tight. I can't release it. Even when I try to keep my mouth in its normal position the tension won't dissapear and it's already so incofortable. Even when I eat. And when I open and close my jaw the sound of my right jaw bone is clearly present. I don't think that's a good sign. I'll try these techniques, see if they help. But do you think I should get a scan?
it's doubtful a scan would show anything if this is mostly muscle tension. That said, try the techniques. If they don't work, seek out a referral. Also consider manual therapies and even some form of counseling or therapy to discover anxieties.
Meditation and massage has helped me. I can somewhat control my clenching during the day but when i clench at night i wake up with a headache. Neck/back/ and jaw massage at a spa helped fix that problem for nearly a week before it slowly returned. So i try to mimic what my masseuse did to loosen up the jaw. Even scalp massages help. But the relaxation and tuning into my body was also helpful.
Happy it helped. We've moved to a larger location and offering more services. You can schedule online herechiropractorkirkwood.janeapp.com/#staff_member/1
great advice, thanks bro! I feel like my mouthguard made be clench worse because having something in between my teeth where there should be a space naturally causes my teeth to bite.
Thank you doctor. But what if you do it wile you sleep? I have a night bruxism for years. I've tried splints but it made it worse I got full inflammation of muscles around. Don't know how to solve this though during the day I don't have this issue.
Dr .can you do live demonstration of these exercises fully?how many times each exercise is to be done per a day. You are concentrating on explanation instead of doing exercises.
I am stressed to the max. I wake up with a headache literally every day. I clinch my jaws in my sleep and now I've noticed I am doing it throughout the day. I feel a tightness around my head as well. I take otc pain relievers only to get little relief, then the headache is right back, perhaps bc I am still unconsciously clinching. I will try your techniques I am hoping for some type of relief soon. Feeling this way everyday is wearing me down ☹
@@rishigupta7394 I went to the doctor he said it was eternal stress...oddly, I ended up taking a otc sinus pill and the headache went away...the clinching has eased up alot..maybe bc of trying to manage my stress. Also, while awake..if I noticed I was clinching..I would immediately stop. I still clinch...but not as bad as before... Also, my pcp suggested that I have a catscan of my sinuses to make sure I did not have an infection that needed to be treated. I never went bc the headache went away after taking the sinus pills..I hope you feel better soon.
This was miraculous! I have been suffering from severe bruxism since past 10 years. I practiced this exercise consciously prolly for around 5-10 minutes. In my first night of sleep, since trying it, I happened to wake up mid-sleep due to a stressful dream and realised my teeth were not touching at all and my tongue was bearing all the stress by thrusting against the upper mouth. On any other day, in a similar situation, I would wake up mid-sleep with a pain in jaw/teeth and head ache due to tense muscle contractions. (Btw, the variation that worked for me was to exercise thrusting the front portion of tongue, rather than the curled tip as suggested in the video. Pushing the frontal tongue against mouth roof felt much more natural for me, than the tip. So I guess it made it easier & natural for the brain to adapt and reprogram to redirect the stress to tongue and throat muscles, rather than teeth and jaw).
I’m going to try these out. I’m an extreme tooth grinder and am having to get a new mouth guard every few months because I grind through it 😬 definitely anxiety related

Thanks for the tip, very helpful. I suggest sophrology as a relaxation method (for those who don't know it). Very helpful and it can even help you fall asleep.

Very helpful video! Thank you so much for sharing these tricks.
How can I stop it when sleeping?
I feel good after performing this exercise
Thanks for watching.

Thank you for this video!
Glad it was helpful!
great advice, thanks bro! I feel like my mouthguard made be clench worse because having something in between my teeth where there should be a space naturally causes my teeth to bite.
Happy to help!

Thank you doctor. But what if you do it wile you sleep? I have a night bruxism for years. I've tried splints but it made it worse I got full inflammation of muscles around. Don't know how to solve this though during the day I don't have this issue.
What if you're clenching when you're sleeping how do you stop that
yes omg i do this too, and if i get into my head about it then i can’t fall asleep because i’m too aware of my jaw
You’ll need a splint for that
I want to know too
SAME!

Feeling this way everyday is wearing me down ☹
Go have some whole grains. Honey bunches of oats for example. Avoid Malnutrition
Suffering from same...what you doing
I have exactly the same. Are you feeling any better now?
@@lariatcazarez8553 just seeing your reply...thank you
@@rishigupta7394 I went to the doctor he said it was eternal stress...oddly, I ended up taking a otc sinus pill and the headache went away...the clinching has eased up alot..maybe bc of trying to manage my stress.
Hey so did this fix the bruxism completely for you?
C'est ce que propose le Dr Mew !
That is Dr Mew's method, the ''mewing'' !
Thank you!! So so helpful
idk exactly what happened to my jaw while on orthotics but ortho def ruined my jaw. my bite is way off and was always ignored.
I’m going to try these out. I’m an extreme tooth grinder and am having to get a new mouth guard every few months because I grind through it 😬 definitely anxiety related
Amazing. Thank you brother
My pleasure
if im on an ssri,,,, do the jaw exercises still work?
@drjeffreyoguinsaintlouis what would you recommend for tardive dyskinesia? My jaw moves, my body has tremors, how can I go about treating it with out
more medication with more possible effects?
My jaw doesn’t hurt but I clench (mostly at night) and I have had teeth crack. I find mouth guard uncomfortable and annoying night. I’ll give these a shot
Thank you very helpful
Glad it helped
thanks! awesome!
You bet!
Thank you
Sir . Kya ye depression se anxiety se bhi sakta he ki? Sift teeth ka issue he?
Thank you.
