I had the septoplasty surgery 2 years ago, my septum became very fragile after the surgery, and I lost a large part of it that was above the columella, which made the tip of my nose drop, and when I breathe it collapses. The cartilage removed from our nose makes a lot of difference to the structure

Thank you for this explanation of this surgery! I’m in the US and I had mine about 12 days ago. Doing ok, but really wished I had this explained better to me, by my Dr. I’m 64 years old woman, and maybe part of what seems a lot longer than usual recovery. I think I had a lot more bleeding than average. Probably my biggest complaint would be all the congestion and snot, (as I have a lot of allergies.). Yes the packing was pretty awful, but the build up in my ears and throat was terrible! I had to make a decision to either breathe or swallow, which made eating really difficult, the first few days. I went in and Dr. suctioned me in office, that helped a lot. Thank you again for taking your time to explain this surgery!!

I immediately fell asleep for an hour or two.

Mine didn't give any post operation do's vs do not's. Except, " come back in 3-4 days to have the stents removed. In rare cases, they"ll stay in for up 7 days.
If you have to stay in the hospital for a day or 2, don't expect the RN's to know what they're doing. They only know a little. My general surgeon knows what she's doing but can't explain worth a damn.

After the surgery when I woke up, I could immediately breath through my nose better than before, and just some blood drips and no pain. I stayed in overnight and had no packing or splints in my nose. Would be amazing if all surgeons were as thorough as you. ❤
My knee surgeon 10 years ago didn't alert me to many of the complications that could occur. Cut a long story short, he made a decision in the surgery, resulting in me unable to play sport or even go for a run unless I want to get frequent steroid injections and an early knee replacement.
He didn't inform me of the proper aftercare for my specific operation. So my year of careful, expensive rehab was all for nothing.

Had my septoplasty done 5 days ago. Was terrified after reading comments but it was no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be. The first night after surgery was obviously unpleasant. Didnt sleep a wink. The worst conjestion you could ever imagine and a sore throat from the breathing tube they put in while under GA. First 2 to 3 days feels like you've got a very bad cold whilst being punched in the nose. But it started to clear up a bit after day 3. Had no bleeding at all since i left hospital and not much pain. Couple of more days ill be back to work! Dont worry people, its uncomfortable but not that bad.

Thank you so much for making this highly informative video. I had a septoplasty 20 years ago, and the surgeon outfractured and cauterized my inferior turbinates. I’m now in the process of finding out if I have sleep apnea, and my pulmonologist told me I have a deviated septum. This explains why my right nostril collapses when I inhale through my nose. I wish I could travel to the UK and have you fix everything so I could breathe properly again. Meanwhile, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying your videos and learning a lot.

Hi doctor, great video, very well informed.
    Sharing my own post-operation experience:
I had a stand-alone RFA turbinate ablation. Sadly, the ENT who performed the operation ablated too much on my right inferior turbinate, which resulted into a mini-empty nose syndrome (read bellow, my nose is healed now) which happened due to the turbinate bone getting exposed. The ENT did not ablate the back of my inferior turbinates, so the improvement is minimal. I did everything right in terms of post-op visits to the doctor, using nasal anti-bacterial ointment and so forth. Post-op there was some moderate pain (5-6) to my front teeth.
The next ENT surgeon I visited prescribed lubrication for 6 more months (* Used nasogel but rinopanteina drops / ointment did it for me) for my turbinate to heal, now we can perform the ablation again in about November. Thankfully, the bone now isn't exposed anymore, my mucosa is healing up nicely, there was also a complication due to long-term usage of nasal steroids, I had a small hole (start of perforated septum) in my septum, which too is healing now since I lubricate the area.
The operation took place on 14/04/2022, now, 19/08/2022 I am much better, but will need to repeat the operation as I mentioned above.
Finally, I am glad that I've met a surgeon who was more than willing to explain and didn't rush for an operation.
I've tried everything, from nasal steroids to nasal rinsing, breathe right and other nasal dilators, even used vicks aromatherapy, these things didn't work for me.
My word of advise, interview your doctor thoroughly, thankfully, I settled to an experienced ENT who listened thoroughly.
I would like to thank dr. Veer, your videos have been both informative and comforting, from learning how to use steroid sprays the right way, for helping me understand how manage post-op pain after tonsillectomy.

I'm on my 3rd week AFTER surgery. My surgery was a Septal Reconstruction + Bilateral inferior Turbinate Submucosal Resection. Basically my Septum was corrected and my Turbinates were shrunken because they too, were making it hard to breathe. Packing wasn't necessary because my ENT specialist doesn't like the bacterial concern so he uses 4% Cocain and 1% Lidocain for bleeding.
Saline rinses with clean (boiled and the chilled water) changed the game during the first 2 weeks and using clean Q tips to coat Bacitrocin gel throughout my nasal cavity (deep) to keep dried blood from crusting and blocking my airway during healing.
Felt no pain after the 1st day. It was wonderful he did an excellent job. After 10 days my post op doctor cleaned out the inside of my nose with what looked like a micro dental suction tube and that helped alot, I wasn't using enough Bacitrocine and had gunk up there. After that I was able to breathe great. I still use the rinse but not as frequent and I don't need the gel as much. I look forward to the next post on apt and see where I am!

I had the septoplasty surgery 2 years ago, my septum became very fragile after the surgery, and I lost a large part of it that was above the columella, which made the tip of my nose drop, and when I breathe it collapses. The cartilage removed from our nose makes a lot of difference to the structure

I did my septoplasy a week ago today. In the next hour, I'm going to remove the inner splints which I'm nervous for. The first night wasn't great in my experience... But then again. It's surgery! It's not going to be pleasant.
I did bleed quite a lot... I had the packs in my nostrils which was. Rather nasty pulling them out. But I was still a bit dazed from the anaesthetic sleep 2 hours later. My ENT informed me that my septum was a lot more deviated than he anticipated from the scans. At first, the hated the constant saline rinse and spitting out of mucus, but after day 3, I was quite the pro. I hated not being able to blow my nose!
I would say the "pressure" in your nose is the most uncomfortable. I have quite a small nose so taking out the splints I believe will make a HUGE difference. The healing.. Is not bad. I expected to be much much worse, 7 days later. I feel back to normal, just a headache from huge congestion from these damn splints. I did the surgery in my school holiday (I'm a teacher from South Africa) so I was worried about only having two weeks to heal.. One week in. I'm not worried at all!
But all in all. I'm very happy I've done this... I do feel as though I can breathe better, even though I'm congested with a heck load of snot.
Will keep you all updated after the splint removal! ❤

I wish you could come to the United States then I would definitely have this surgery which I do need because of a deviated septum from the age of 10 from an injury. As I got older, it gets worse (sinus infections, constantly blowing my nose, nasal drip, etc.) I can breathe through my nose quite well though. But when I look up ENTs in Arizona, they all have very bad reviews and they do not have any bed side manners. You explain everything so well and you have a great personality and no doubt a great surgeon.

I had my surgery last Tuesday, June 11th, 2024. It was actually multiple operations at once. I had my deviated septum fixed, they cut out some of my mucus membrane, they fixed a scar on my lip and made it less noticeable along with a bit of plastic surgery to make my nose equal on both sides. (I was born with a cleft lip and palette) The procedure was approximately 4 hours and the last thing I remembered before going under was the nurse giving me medical fentanyl which I gave her a weird look before passing out. I’m going onto my 4th day after the surgery and I feel more pressure than pain but I am overall just irritated that there is a giant thing in my nose and I have to wait 72 more hours until it gets removed. I’m used to the blood and the feeling of being incredibly weak after surgery as this is around my 20th one but sleeping is still hard. I am personally carrying around a small plastic trash bag to spit blood into which is very useful and I highly recommend. I hope these next few days go by faster and I’ll finally be able to breathe!!!

Had my septoplasty yesterday. All went well. No complications. As the pain meds wore off in the evening, I felt progressively worse and my nose is now 100% blocked. I've had the worst night's sleep ever, feel like I've been punched hard in the face and can only breathe through my mouth. I'm supposed to start nasal douching today and it absolutely terrifies me. The instructions say to have your head completely upside down and fill your nostrils with the solution. It also says to blow bubbles to loosen things up but as my nose is totally blocked, this would be impossible. Surely, having your head upside down is the last thing you should do after this type of surgery. Even leaning forward slightly causes a lot of pressure in my nose. I never see this type of nasal douching instruction given in any of the videos I've found. Everyone just simply leans over a sink/ bowl and sprays upwards. Can't I just do that?
