Glad i found your video series. I am just up the road from you in Moosic. I will be repairing my badly spalled sidewalk using your guidance as soon as this weather clears up. Thanks
I learned like 20 things from your video....i live about 2 hours south of chicago and do use rock salt on the concrete...wont be doing that anymore. Also i need to resurface the walkway going up to the house...thanks for showing me how...any amateur that wants to work with cement/concrete should watch this
Excellent video/ my steps look good now but need the portland paint treatment so 3 questions:1/ what consistancy is the portland paint, like reg housepaint? 2/ how long to dry and you can walk on it ? and 3/ storing leftover portland powder so moisture does not kill it / should I use 5 gal paint bucket with lid? thanks again for the excellent video
Mike do you think cement all would be better than a quickcrete resurfacer to resurface sidewalks in a tropical zone? I like that cement all. It’s fantastic but want to know if its a good resurfacer.
Mike, Thanks for the video. I saw this quickrete resurfacer product and thought about using it to redo my pool deck. I was a little hesitant because of some of the negative reviews. I'm in California so hope it doesn't chip off. I probably give it a try. Looks good. /John
Hi John, I been using it on porch tops that was exposed to the weather and for years it has been fine. If it chips up I personally think the base was not wet enough. my opinion. thanks mike
I just used this concrete resurfacer today on 2 door stoops. Cost me $21 for a 40 lb box! I used some wide masking tape where the stoops met up with sidewalk/asphalt. This worked well to keep everything nice and neat. And... the water didn't wash away the tape. The directions call for the product to be mixed more thoroughly than Mike was shown doing on film. Also, I used a wire brush - like Mike was shown doing and a Mason's Chisel to prep the concrete. I used some concrete patcher on the deeper nicks in the stoops a few days before the resurfacing took place. From what I'm told, the life of the resurfacing will be determined by how well the underlying concrete has been prepped before application. You don't want any oil/paint/powder on the concrete you are about to cover.
Hi Bellona, good points you are making. usually a sponge and wire brush will clean up the excess spillover if you catch it in time. but like I say "anything that works". bringing mixers for a small job like this usually cause more of a mess then they are worth and experience says if its mixed enough,, I use the cement all on patches because I can use the resurfacer over it in less than a hour. everybody got their own way, the test around these parts is the winters. thanks mike
Mike...I have a question, "after you wire brush, would you create an even better bond by mixing a mild muriatic acid solution"...I am a 4th generation stone mason (apprentice grade) and have a lot of interior and exterior stone wall repair, repointing of my exterior foundation, a brownstone sidewalk that need to be elevated and lastly, a triple wide brick sidewalk that has been disturbed by the many utility companies that came through the borough fixing old lines, replacing meters, etc. etc. Last fall, I found your videos to be extremely informative, as I did some small practice areas before I tackled any big project! Anyways, I plan on starting this spring, I might be asking a lot of questions! Thank-you, another grateful viewer, from the Chocolate Town area of Pennsylvania!
Hi lori, lots of guys acid it first or power wash, I know that no matter what the winters up here kill it and I got to go over it every year or other year, I would not have done it if it was not my cousin, nice to hear from you, I wish you well, thanks mike
@@MikeHaduck Thank you Mike. In the light areas I had a lot of water. It made the portland fall off the brush, but in the lightly wet areas the portland went on darker.
Mike, you should have told your cousin that he had to hold the sidewalk up for an hour or two while the gravel settled in (laughing). Maybe he wouldn't have spilled the donuts! I'll bet you guys ate them anyway! Thanks for sharing. You do great work and you're a very talented man. You always make it look easier than it really is because I do some of this work too. That's a sign of a seasoned pro!
Thank you for responding Mike and by now i hope your cousin has made good on the coffee. He really owes you a steak dinner! Lol Thanks again Mike and stay well Sir!😎
good video learning a lot. Any the tools/technique videos? like float vs a flat trowel. For the cement all saw the prices per bag the other day; higher than I expected.
Love love love your videos. I know you don't live in earthquake country but I was wondering what you'd recommend for repairing concrete cracks? Flexible product like sikaflex? Expensive polyeurthane or epoxy systems? Again your videos are wonderful.
Mike, I have an indoor utility room that has salt water damaged concrete from a leaking water heater neglected by a previous owner. I am trying to spruce up the room a bit to use for some other things. It also houses the boiler, so in the winter it is an extremely warm room. Nothing fancy. My main goal with the floor is to encapsulate the dust currently coming off the concrete. I am using this product from Quikrete for the bad spots. I am hoping to then paint it with a polymer coating. +John Williamson I am not much of an acid guy especially over patches, My videos "how I repair concrete steps Mike Haduck" I do a lot of painting over concrete and patches,, they might help, thanks Mike
In the past i used sakrete sand mix cement as a resurfacer on my sidewalk . It held up fine for the last year, and is inexpensive . The Quickrete resurfacer is pricey as you used in the video . Is it worth the high cost ? My sidewalk gets very little use.
Mike, I'm a do-it-yourselfer in Nashville and I think I've seen all your videos. I want to reroute my 40' sidewalk. But instead of paying for disposal of the old one, i thought I would move the pads to the new location, then separate and border them with brick soldiers. Some pads would have to be cut. Any thoughts for me?
Allen Doolittle wow Nashville, I recorded there when I was a high falutin counry star.lol anyway; that's a hard call, there should be a place that takes clean fill where you won't have to pay, ask the local excavators, I am going to put a new video out in a few days,, How pour a concrete slab, Part 2. maybe that is the way to go, hope it helps, thanks mike
Mt sidewalk was not poured in separate slabs. It's just one solid 18 foot pour with groves to make it appear to be separate slabs. How would you raise that? You'd need a two truck with a hoist.
I had to laugh when you said your cousin dropped coffee and doughnuts you had paid for on the paving you had just finished 😂🤣😅 I needed a laugh today, especially after you had a word to his wife about him lol. I really loved the video Mike and thank so much for the laugh.
Mike Thank you for all these great videos! You have helped me so much. I re-did my daughters steps and they have held up great for years! I have one question, for resurfacing a foundation is it better to use a resurfacer or Portland, the resurfacer cost is twice as much? Thanks for your help and guidance, you are awesome!
Thanks Dennis, I did a series on “how I repair a stone or Concrete foundation, Mike Haduck, “I think you’ll get everything you need to know from them, I hope it helps thanks, Mike
Would you use this method to lift a sunken Drive-way? I've got a section which cracked across, and one half sits about 1/2 inch below (location NE OHIO)
Hi J, driveways are a bit different, I have videos old on how I resurface concrete driveway, everybody has a different opinion, but if you’re going to replace it soon and you wanna take a chance I don’t see nothing wrong with trying, I hope it helps thanks Mike
How deep the dent on concrete sidewalk I can use this method? My sidewalk has some place up to about 1 inch deep, can I use the resurface to fix it, or I have to rebuild the concrete sidewalk, really hate to do that.
Hi Kevin, this system is this is the last resort before replacement, I would do a little test or sample where no one is looking, and see what happens, I hope it helps thanks , mike
Hi Donna ,I got that playlist out on resurfacing sidewalks and another out on resurfacing concrete driveways, it mostly a old school temporary make over before replacement, some people do it every year to freshen it up, and keep doing it, it all depends on the situation, thanks Mike
+John Williamson I always tell folks to use plain mason sand or play sand instead of salt, I never seen a melt product that works, and expect to re-do every spring ,best thing is to live in Florida. LOL thanks mike
I just bought a house and the side walk is the old school cement with a lot of pebbles in it. Can I resurface it this way? Or do I have to do it with cent with pebble in it?
Mike Haduck Masonry thank you so much. I will take your recommendations and and do it as soon as I can was thinking of doing to day but it snowed to day here in chicago🤦🏼♀️
Mike, have you ever used portland/sand/glue mixed to the consistency of the store-bought resurfacing and used it to resurface? I'm thinking that it may be the same thing...except cheaper? Thanks, Ryan
+Mike Haduck Thanks for the reply Mike. I've watched Part 2 and a lot of your other videos - great job by the way. It just seems like the portland "paint" appears to be somewhat thin in comparison to the brand resurfacer. The resurfacer appears a little thicker and appears to put a little more of a new surface on. Just wanted to pick your brain a little bit and see if you have done anything like that or if you think it would be successful. Thanks, Ryan
Ryan Scott Hi Ryan, yea I do put the Portland paint on thin because I expect it to ware off with out leaving the larger hole that the store bought leaves, no matter, I figure you got to re do the job every year, In Pennsylvania the winters and salt kill it. I always say these coverings are always a temporary fix before replacement. Its just Old school whitewashing, but I wanted to pass it along before it was forgotten, we did that whole driveway for 25 dollars. lots of different things to consider. hope it helps thanks mike.
+Mike Haduck Thanks Mike. By the way, what part of PA are you in? I'm in Pittsburgh. Thanks again Mike...you've gave me the courage and interest to do masonry!
I consider the resurfacer a sealer, If you seal it with another product and want to put another coat over it you would be defeating the purpose. I am not a fan of sealers I would just do it again. my opinion thanks mike
How can I make an ugly edge of sakrete look better. Can I make a strong sand mix no gravel to make a nice slanted edge? It joins chip and tar drive. Mine.
Hi Juan, I just put one light coat on first and then as it wears away or spots, could be a year later or the next day I will add another, in other words, whenever you think you need it. I hope it helps, thanks mike
Next time he wants another cement job done, reduce the thickness of the concrete slab, no rebars, and then tell him to dance on it while it is still dry/wet. I have had similar situations also, oh well, "life is that way". I enjoy my family and all that good stuff.
mike did you ever use anti hydro as a bonding agent? I went to frame a house and the last 25 ft was supposed to be a 8 inch sunken living room. so I said to the builder I guess you left out the sunken living room. he said no so I said the last course of block should be left off but it wasn't. so he asked me to fix it. normally you can just tap the top course on both sides and the block falls off. being it was cold the guy used anti hydro so doing that resulted in 2 inches of the top of the next course coming off the bond was never broke. had to get diamond blade and cut the joint on both sides. a nightmare. I have never seen mortar hold like that
Mr. Haduck, with the help and encouragement of your video, I poured three bags of cement, 220lbs, which covered a full size 10X10 patio and a 40ft sidewalk between yesterday and today. It looks great. I used a wheelbarrow to mix, a shovel, a squeegee and a paint roller with a long handle. It was hot out so I kept it a little wet while leveling it out. I used a stiff bristle brush to give it a little texture after it dried a bit. It was a great two day project and worked out better than expected. Thanks for the reply too. Take care and thanks again for the video.
Del orean I don't see a difference, you got to clean and bring extra tools, I would be wasting time, experience tells all the stories, working on part 2 with the old school method , God bless. Mike
Exactly, you can't see the difference, but it's there on microscopic level. The mix was designed and is recommended to be mixed with a paddle. either way I like the techniques you should and I have some spots where I can test them out. Thanks for the video
andrew pulcini I think I made it clear, that a resurface is the last resort before replacement and that once you start to resurface, its at least a touch up or redo every year. thanks mike
No more solar panel commercials please! I am in a condo and the association does not allow solar panels. I just pay my electric bill every month and it's no big deal
it must be a pain in the ass to do that every year or so why not just start all over again &redo a new sidewalk . like you said it's a patch work it's just a little band aid
there's always different ways of looking at things but i would like to be honest with a client cause it also reflects on your moral ethics if you do a nice job the neighbours will notice the work also instead of ripping them off .
Watch this now every late summer and then do my walk. Thanks as always Mike!
Thanks Bob, for 25 bucks, I’ll bet it’s worth it, I appreciate the comment Mike

You used a wet Portland mix for this correct ?
If not , can you ?
This was a pre made mix where I added some bonding,
He used TABLE SALT as a substitute HaHaHaHaHa That so funny it made my day
Thanks J, It’s true and he still throwing salt on it, and we just re-surfaced that again, would you be a video down the road, thanks Mike
I thot you said you dont recomend a second coat?
Thanks, Mike
No bonding agent? Great vid...
Hi Oingo, no bonding agent, just a yearly redo, thanks mike
Can you paint with Rapidset cement all?
Hi anthony, I do not recommend it. it is better for patches and paint over in my opinion , thanks mike
Thank you mike for taking the time to answer my question
Hello mike my cuestión is. one coat or two for resurface
Hi Juan, I just put one light coat on first and then as it wears away or spots, could be a year later or the next day I will add another, in other words, whenever you think you need it. I hope it helps, thanks mike
How dense of a sponge float do you use?
Hi Soldat, standard, on the harder side, I think I have them on my amazon site, thanks mike
Unbelievable! @ 8 :26, your cousin spills coffee on the sidewalk and he didn't pay for it? sounds about right. LOL!
thanks Egidio, I appreciate it. mike
Next time he wants another cement job done, reduce the thickness of the concrete slab, no rebars, and then tell him to dance on it while it is still dry/wet. I have had similar situations also, oh well, "life is that way". I enjoy my family and all that good stuff.
Who does the sidewalk, the city or home owners?
rockotto727 in this instance, the homeowner. thanks mike
mike did you ever use anti hydro as a bonding agent? I went to frame a house and the last 25 ft was supposed to be a 8 inch sunken living room. so I said to the builder I guess you left out the sunken living room. he said no so I said the last course of block should be left off but it wasn't. so he asked me to fix it. normally you can just tap the top course on both sides and the block falls off. being it was cold the guy used anti hydro so doing that resulted in 2 inches of the top of the next course coming off the bond was never broke. had to get diamond blade and cut the joint on both sides. a nightmare. I have never seen mortar hold like that
Hi Mr. as an old schooler I never used it. depended mostly on gravity, but if they think they need it , I guess it is ok, I appreciate it. mike
after all these years of watching you i found out cement doll means cement all lol
Thanks Noe, mike
👍
Thanks Kate. Mike
I would have used a carborundum stone to grind in the first layer.
you can always use anything that works, thanks mike
Someone should have a stern talk with your cousin.
thanks Fern, I agree, lol, thanks mike
DeuceGenius, I wear latex gloves when I can. Helps a lot.
Mike,
With all that grief regarding the donuts and coffee, I hope your cousin paid you more than $7.50 an hour! ;o)
You should be drill mixing that
Del orean I don't see a difference, you got to clean and bring extra tools, I would be wasting time, experience tells all the stories, working on part 2 with the old school method , God bless. Mike
Exactly, you can't see the difference, but it's there on microscopic level. The mix was designed and is recommended to be mixed with a paddle. either way I like the techniques you should and I have some spots where I can test them out. Thanks for the video
Del orean thanks, mike
Wet it to set it !
ABC ABC thanks mike
You never get dirt or mulch on your sponge float lol unlike the guy typing this😕😫😜
Hi Bob, yep lol always, mike
I wonder if his cousin paid for all the ball-breaking
He still owes me, lol. Mike
@@MikeHaduck LOL!!
you've got to wet it first ultimate that's what she said
Thanks, Mike
I give it one winter before it pops off the concrete
andrew pulcini I think I made it clear, that a resurface is the last resort before replacement and that once you start to resurface, its at least a touch up or redo every year. thanks mike
No more solar panel commercials please! I am in a condo and the association does not allow solar panels. I just pay my electric bill every month and it's no big deal
Thanks, mike
No portland
that is on the second video, thanks, mike
it must be a pain in the ass to do that every year or so why not just start all over again &redo a new sidewalk . like you said it's a patch work it's just a little band aid
If you got the "money" no worries, this is for the folks that don't, thanks mike
there's always different ways of looking at things but i would like to be honest with a client cause it also reflects on your moral ethics if you do a nice job the neighbours will notice the work also instead of ripping them off .
like the book says "honest weights and honest measure is the delight of the Lord." proverbs I think.
