I really appreciate how you explain your process for composing the shots. Not just the instant composition in the frame, but also the technicals and process for arriving at the location. Thanks much for the thoughtful presentation.
Hi Thomas, I've never commented on a video, but I know that you go through all the comments so thank you for that. I follow your channel, but not religiously or in order, but I just wanted to say thank you for not only being inspirtational and helping me with my own photography, but also for being meticulously sincere and honest and that is hard to find on the internet. I can tell you want to do things right and true and you don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You don't just fall into the crowd and just do what everyone else does. Thank you for staying true to yourself and your passions! God bless!
Thomas, this is why you inspire me. You are willing to share your challenges and failures along with your successes. Thank you. Also, while watching the video I got a pop-up for your book of which I was unaware. I'm happy to say I purchased it as a small token of my appreciation for your efforts. I'm looking forward to reading it.
Thomas, as a landscape photographer myself, I am glad you are choosing to shoot in crappy weather places. I have shot a great deal in Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest, and even Scottland. I quit all that and embraced my desire for warm climates and vibrant colors. You take the north and I will take the south:0)
Hey Thomas, I am a recent subscriber to your Channel. I want to say, I really appreciate your philosophy as a Landscape Photographer! As a landscape photography enthusiast, I want to thank you for all of your work. I am especially appreciative that you have confirmed my thought about getting as much of the picture in camera as possible. Post work is essential, but I love your philosophy of spending the extra time out in nature with your camera, instead of spending extra time sitting inside behind a computer. I am learning so much about composition, settings, lighting and preparation from watching you! Being from the States, I hope it's okay to say that my husband and I love your sense of presence on camera. We also love the style of your channel. You're a great blend of being equally interesting to watch, honest and informative. Even though my husband is not heavily into photography, he often watches your channel with me. He is also an outdoor guy, so he respects your love of the outdoors and camping. We love seeing all of the beautiful locations you visit. Last but definitely not least, your photography is stunning!! We love your photography channel; it is our favorite. Congratulations on getting married! ~ Nedra
Hi Thomas, great video. Something I've long admired about your vlogs is the raw honesty and emotion you show. There's no ego here, just very true accounts of your trips with all the ups and downs. Last year I cycled around Iceland, buoyant at the start with ideas about vlogging and photographic adventures but broken after a week with exhaustion and humbled by the elements to the point of genuine tears! I could sense your disappointment in having to call it a day earlier than planned, fair play for pressing on to get some good images and show how to make the best of the situation! It's a rollercoaster isn't it just! Keep 'em coming sir, cracking work.
Thank you for all of your video's.... there is something I can't quite describe about your video's, but the combination of commentary, filming, editing and music make them so much better than any others on youtube. Instructional, entertaining and relaxing... pretty amazing !
The best thing about you, is that I can really feel every aspect you go trought... bad or good conditions and that is something very rare, especially for someone uploading just 1 vid every week :)
I had similar conditions when I visited a few months back. Stunning place though and the colours have to be seen to be believed, definitely my favourite place in Scotland now. If anyone is thinking of visiting just do it and make sure to book the ferry early and thanks again for the inspiration to visit :)
Great work in not so forgiving conditions, way to make something out of what nature presented to you. We have all had these sorts of trips when the weather just didn't want to play ball. All in all outstanding work as usual. The second image was very nice. Keep it up Thomas. My videos have been improved considerably from watching you and how you make your delivery. So thank you for that. Take care as always. John.
Hi Thomas, I am a beginner photographer and i keep re-watching your videos...i get to learn new stuff every time...i am really excited about the Antarctica trip and looking forward to it. Thanks for your efforts!!
Another brilliant video, Thomas, and thank you for explaining your camera settings and thought processes. So helpful for an aspiring landscape photographer who has much to learn!
At least you sleep well Thomas, brilliant and engaging series of videos. Everything makes sense, except the early starts 🎭 you really are what i will never be, a true artist and creative story teller.
As usual, an amazing vid. I love how you also tell us the 'downside', or harsher side, of landscaping. It inspires and encourages me, and a lot of other people, to just go out there.
Great work Thomas, those conditions did seem challenging. Wind is always difficult to photograph in, but on top of that, sand is a nightmare. Shame about your camera, hopefully it can be repaired. Do you find it difficult to sleep the night before an early morning shoot? I know I do particularly if I’m vlogging as well. I think it’s a combination of the fact I’m excited about the adventure, and I’m mentally preparing to tackle the unknowns that the day will bring, plus I’m running through my head how I’m going to capture the story and the feeling of my experience (which I might add you are particularly good at). I know you mentioned the bad weather made it difficult for you to sleep but I was wondering if this has an impact as well. Beautiful images mate, I loved the curved line you found on the beach that lead the eye through the image. It’s amazing how that elevation can change your perspective dramatically. This certainly is a beautiful location, we appreciate the effort you go to to share your experience.
Andrew Marr Hey. Shooting early never usually affects my sleep unless I don't have a plan locked down yet. Then I lay awake at night doubting myself and worrying about where I should shoot.
Another great video that goes beyond just a "great shot". You offer inspiration and insight into the whole of what it is that motivates us as landscape photographers. I also enjoy the truth and honesty in what you share as there are times when it just feels hard, and the inspiration is hard to come by. But that, in essence is what we are all striving to overcome, to find the balance between striking a creative cord, and over coming the day to day challenges of just getting out there to enjoy nature, finding a good composition, and feeling happy with ourselves and our love of photography.
Unlucky, Scotland's weather can be erm... difficult. Makes you appreciate the sunny days however! Still really enjoyed the images and I'm putting Harris on my list of places to go!
Hi Thomas, really enjoy your videos, i can see where your coming from with frustration of landscape photography I'm just back from a week in Cornwall and had a very hit an miss success with my results , but I'm biting at the bit to get out again , good or bad it's wonderful to be out again pitting our creative juices against the elements . Dave
Even though the weather was not great and the final photos were limited. The video footage was pretty damn good. I particularly like the sand being blown off the sand dunes,.... keep up the good work
The best background music hands down(which proves the adage, less is more). I guess you see this stuff all the time but I would be enthralled with the stark wind and sea. If you are struggling with your environment may I suggest Arizona. Lots of sun and rock(too hot for grass to grow).
Hello Thomas, im just waiting for sunset to come close ;) So I thought to check if you posted something. At the moment it is raining but still there is colourful light , as you said, rainy weather make good landscape pictures.
Hey Thomas, I got a decent looking picture from that evening. The clouds left the sky a little bit too fast, but still enough to reflect the beautiful red glow. Cheers
Hi, Again with interesting issues, tips and that lovely place! Scotland is really beautiful and full of history. That sea colour is awesome and the swell also! I am a lover´s sea/beach. :-)) I really like the site squarespace and in the future, I'll have a place mine there for sure. Be fine and enjoy your trip back. :-)
I'm a new viewer and I enjoyed this short series. I'm from Lewis and I find Harris to be a beautiful island, but it's difficult to capture is beauty. It's small but somehow vast at the same time. Next time, try and time your visit with the blooming flowers on the machair and also try to get out onto the hills more - some beautiful lochs scattered all across Lewis and Harris.
Another great video Thomas. I've just just started trying to crack out weekly videos, and only since doing so have I appreciated just how hard it is to keep putting out quality stories like you do. I look forward to 6pm every Wednesday :) Keep it up! James
Hey Thomas, you've just made my day mate, thank you. I won't bore you why so we'll leave it there. I will say this though; Absolutely beautiful photos. That last one was like an oil painting, absolutely amazing. So, off home now, where to next?
HI Thomas, I'm watching your videos for a longer time and every Wednesday my girlfriend has to find some other things to while I'm watching your videos! You inspire me so much and I decided to get the landscape photography to my region! I like your true and unscripted style! Hope to see so much videos more from you! If you ever visit the German Balticsea tell me please. I think the "Weststrand" would be "your area"!🙏
Keep up the great inspiration! I think you've convinced me northern European weather is not for large format landscape work. One less future purchase to think about.
Great video Thomas! Rain, hail or shine, we'll always want to see and hear about your adventures, I really enojoyed this episode mate, i love how your choice of background music matches perfectly with your moods ;)
At least you have got up and persevered, where long ago everyone else would have given up,,,,i/we all hope that you have better luck next trip👍ps,the estuary looked fab that was shot👍
Hi Thomas . What a shame. I am itching to see you use your 5x4. I have just bought an old one after over a decade with out one. and worried I have forgotten how to use it, I am hoping it will all come back to me. I am off to mull later this year and am sure I will see some similar compositions. All the best and keep up the good work. Martin
Bummer about the weather, thats Scotland for you though, four seasons in one day . I am off to Harris in a few weeks time , so these YT vids from you have been really helpful. Thanks for that. Keep up the great work Buddy . ATB Pete
I'm just about to start watching this video, and I absolutely love the Squarespace plug at the beginning! :D It's like, man I'm making a video, BUT, I'll get the sponsor in, even in the pitch black in a tent in the middle of nowhere! :D Love the content Tom!
Another great vlog Tom. Having filmed a couple of my trips I know how tough it is to combine taking the images and still constructing a vlog...I was on Harris in March as well and while the cameras survived, my casualty list was two tripod feet and a remote cable release!! Think I got off quite lightly ....:-)
You poor man! It seems everytime I see you shooting the weather sucks! We need to get you out here to the great southwest of the United States where we have 340 days of sunshine!... You video does motivate me to get out more and not take the nice weather for granted! .....
Brilliant vid, loving your abstract seashores (have you seen Rachael Talibarts?). You are inspiring and intrepid - thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts. Ps I've got a Squarespace website now and very happy. Thanks for the rec. PPS THE best channel for landscape photography.
Hi Thomas! I´m sooo sory for your damaged camera. May be it can be fixed? Your videos are great and inspiring. Sorry my English is not so good (I am from Austria) and I have to rewind the videos sometimes to understand clearly what you say. But it is worth it. Thank you and good luck and perfect light for the next shooting. BR Thomas
Really sensed your frustrations but with a new campervan on its way to you soon, maybe get back to Harris in the not too distant future for a different experience. Loved the colour of the sea in your images and the texture of the sand. Hope your enjoying the holiday and grabbing some sneaky snaps with the drone :)
Definitely not a fruitless effort, that last photo was amazing! Very atmospheric. You probably know him but check Bruce Percy's site for inspiration for your next trip to Harris, especially for abstract images.
Love this channel! My wife and I are hoping to spend some time in the Outer Hebrides next year to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary and having watched these videos I can't wait. Which stretch of the coast did you visit and where is the final location?
had the same frustrations last weekend, feel your pain dude, you have to stick with it, its all worth while for that that one great shot, keep it up. :)
Well, one thing's for sure, the landscape there is absolutely amazing, just begging to be photographed. Even in this weather. Wish I could visit (though I'd probably not do it justice in my photos, unlike you).
Could see your frustration. Scotland has very challenging weather and difficult to arrange that Ideal weather. Simon Baxter uses a new app called Clear Cloud which may assist your decision making and where to go and to adjust your daily planning. Also could it be arranged with 2 elbow brackets together to create a ( Square Space ) to protect your small cameras from being broken. Regards, Allan Davies.
I always enjoy your videos, great work. The filters and how to decide which are needed, is or can be a problem for me, I understand the use of them but the combination for a given condition is where I struggle at times. Would it be possible to cover the thinking of, when and the best ones to use. I would like to have a better thought process when it comes to this matter. Thanks
Excellent and as inspirational as always. I loved both images you featured and can see the 2nd on one of your calendars!👍 I was gutted to see the G5X dead, did you manage to get it fixed ok? On that subject who do you insure your kit with? I don't envy you having to de-sand your gear, it's like windscreen glass in as much as it keeps appearing no matter how thoroughly you try and clean up! I read in one of the replies here that you are getting a camper van, this will open up so many new opportunities for you which you will hopefully share with us. All the best mate and take care on your travels.🍀👍
Totally agree with you on the featured pics. Absolutely Stunnin. I second the Calendar inclusion. As for the sand? There's a short video of him doing clean-up out there, in his studio and what he does about the sand. I took his advice and bought some Air Dusters from Poundland, so subscribing saves you money! Top man.
You're like the Bear Grylls of photography. I live in Durham so i'll be heading to the Northumberland coast when I get my camera. I might bump into you lol.
Hi Thomas, I don't often comment on RUclips videos, but I've been following you for a short while now and find your honest style and work ethic to be pretty inspirational. Really excellent production values as well. Are you shooting this alone or do you have an assistant? Whatever, well done and keep up the great work!
Great photos! I think the second image could've used a SLIGHTLY shorter shutter speed for just a bit more detail in the water without totally freezing the scene.
Thanks for persevering with the conditions. I loved your beach shots. If you didn’t know better, they could be a Pacific island. You will be back, I know it. Unfinished business,Thomas.
First of all: Many thanks for all of your work and hints. Hey, what happened at about 4:03? Did the wind knock over the poor camera on the tripod? All of my commiserations. I love my gear also and this must have tug your heart... Could/Did they fix it?
Have you not thought about putting some sort of pvc tube over your lens to protect it from falling? :) Btw: finally another wild camping video. I hope we will see more of these this year :)
Aloha Thomas....love and truly enjoy watching your vids. Have a quick question, what circular polorizer are you using in the front of your foundation kit? I have the lee 77mm foundation kit so wondering how i can get a CPL to attach to the front. Many thanks!
Easily my favorite (and the most inspirational) photography channel. Thank you for all the work and passion you put into it, Tom.
Saad Khan That's very kind, thank you.
Saad Khan That's very kind, thank you.

After almost every video I watch of yours I get out within the next hour and go take some photographs. Thank you for the weekly inspiration.
Classic Heaton. I loved this video even though it's a story of disappointment with conditions because, well, that's what it's like sometimes.
Thomas, as a landscape photographer myself, I am glad you are choosing to shoot in crappy weather places. I have shot a great deal in Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest, and even Scottland. Probably the best photo channel.
Greetings from Poland.
Another brilliant video, Thomas, and thank you for explaining your camera settings and thought processes. So helpful for an aspiring landscape photographer who has much to learn!
Tom love your videos. The camera falling is one of the funniest scenes I have watched.
Loved the chilling intro and the atmosphere it created - production value gets better with every video :)
Inspirational again... "Absolutely no Control" + Heaton = "Absolutely Stunnin'..." That's Landscape Photography
At least you sleep well Thomas, brilliant and engaging series of videos. Everything makes sense, except the early starts 🎭 you really are what i will never be, a true artist and creative story teller.

Great last photo (the one at f13) lovely colour and movement.
Amazing video as always. Love that you show the bad sides also not just the good and easy sides.
How amazing it would be to be on location shooting with you Tom! I learn so so much from you! Such a champ!
Really like the mood of the beginning of the video man. The sadness hit hard! thanks and great job!
Videos dont always have to be happy in my opinion
Great work Thomas, those conditions did seem challenging. Wind is always difficult to photograph in, but on top of that, sand is a nightmare. Shame about your camera, hopefully it can be repaired. well done! your work all passion. Thank you ever much Thomas.
Thanks for another very enjoyable video. My favourite channel on you tube. Just makes me want to get out in my tent and snap away.
I just got into the channel and man, just thank you for what you're doing. Its really inspirational.
Great vid, a place I went to years ago and the weather brought memories back, especially seilebost. We had to evacuate the beach ....
hey Thomas. thank you for this Video, what a beatiful landscape. i hope you will get a better weather 🙂 greetings from frankonia, Chris
Tough conditions - what a trooper.
Another great video that goes beyond just a "great shot". You offer inspiration and insight into the whole of what it is that motivates us as landscape photographers. so happy I found your videos! really helpful and calming. remind me why I want to be a photographer! thanks

Love this as always Tom!! The intro cracked me up so much! "Sqquaareespacce..."
Just a thought to avoid things falling over in the wind. Set the tripod legs further astride/wider to give a lower centre of balance. 👍🏻🙂
Even though the weather was not great and the final photos were limited. The video footage was pretty damn good. I particularly like the sand being blown off the sand dunes,.... keep up the good work
Enjoyed this Thomas, the weather and location remind me so much of my own little part of the world, Ireland.
The best background music hands down(which proves the adage, less is more). I guess you see this stuff all the time but I would be enthralled with the stark wind and sea. If you are struggling with your environment may I suggest Arizona. Lots of sun and rock(too hot for grass to grow).
Ahhh, Arizona. Warm evening, sunshine, no wind.... sounds perfect. I bet it's not always like that though. One day I will make it over there.
Thomas. Just came across your video. Loving it. Should be there today. Glorious up here 👍
Hello Thomas, im just waiting for sunset to come close ;)
So I thought to check if you posted something.
At the moment it is raining but still there is colourful light , as you said, rainy weather make good landscape pictures.
Stick with it. The weather is always changing! Good luck.
Hey Thomas,
I got a decent looking picture from that evening.
The clouds left the sky a little bit too fast, but still enough to reflect the beautiful red glow.
Cheers
@Stefan: So, how did it work out? :)
Hello Thomas,
this is what came out of it:

Sadly the clounds disappeared to quickly.

Thomas - pack two or three empty ballast bags and some hooks. Fill them with rocks, sand etc. No weight but solves your wind problem 😀
Hey Thomas, you've just made my day mate, thank you. I won't bore you why so we'll leave it there.
I will say this though; Absolutely beautiful photos. That last one was like an oil painting, absolutely amazing.
So, off home now, where to next?
That was excellent Thomas! 👌🏻 lovely images too.
Every time you say fantastic, I can't help but mimic. haha.
One of these days I'm going to do the "Thomas Heaton Fantastic Drinking Game"
HI Thomas, I'm watching your videos for a longer time and every Wednesday my girlfriend has to find some other things to while I'm watching your videos! When I saw you in that tent I saw dedication to your passion, great work and subbed.
I'm just about to start watching this video, and I absolutely love the Squarespace plug at the beginning! :D
It's like, man I'm making a video, BUT, I'll get the sponsor in, even in the pitch black in a tent in the middle of nowhere! :D
Love the content Tom!
Sometimes that will happen but you never give up. Keep working hard
Terrific work as always Tom! Best wishes from Australia.
your life is beautiful wave too. Thomas!
Love that Square Space running gag. Would be even more funny if they were really sponsoring you. ;)
What was the wind like at sunup? With those clouds, you should be able to get rivers of silver flowing across the landscape from the salt marsh.
You poor man! It seems everytime I see you shooting the weather sucks! We need to get you out here to the great southwest of the United States where we have 340 days of sunshine!... You video does motivate me to get out more and not take the nice weather for granted! .....
I've had that issue with a old Canon G9 I just clicked the lens back into place, maybe worth giving it a go.

Some great vids, Thomas. Chin up, keep going and thanks.
learning lots thank you thomas
fantastic video as always. So inspiring 📷📷📷 xxx
Good series! Shame about not being about to break out the 4x5, but wind makes LF impossible.
Thanks, the LF makes an appearance soon.
The video footage at approx 5.45 is an image for me.. almost Rothko in its simplicity.
That was exactly my thought! The sea/ocean had a groovy turquoise color.
I can't wait for the camper, it should make trips much more comfortable and offer lots of flexibility! Thanks for the comment.
Pure inspiration. Thanks.
Hope you get the chance to break out the large format camera soon. The wait is excruciating! Great video as always Thomas :)
Tom your a true inspiration 👍
I loved both images you featured and can see the 2nd on one of your calendars!👍
I was gutted to see the G5X dead, did you manage to get it fixed ok?
Footage from the 5D IV (after the G5X died) is really nice.
Wish you didn't have to end it there !! 😉 ashame the weather wasn't the best... (:(
Thanks for persevering with the conditions.
Btw: finally another wild camping video.
Tom, rather random second post. What's the mat you are using under your sleeping bag. Thanks again 👍
