I've recently purchased a Canon 80D, my first DSLR. It is, by far, one of my favorite items that I own. I am interested in photography, so I wanted to learn more about it. Since I travel an average of 400 miles daily across the country driving a truck, I often wonder how I could fit photography into my busy schedule. After seeing many beautiful places at highway speeds, I wish nothing more than to freeze those high speed moments. However, for safety reasons, I can't just stop in the road to take pictures. So, after watching this video, you've given me motivation to look a little closer, and little deeper, into the areas where I can park for those beautifully rich colors like that of those of the frosty leaves. Thank you for inspiring me to get out and look. Have a great day.
I do a fair bit of landscape myself. I find your videos most inspirational and great to see someone who really enjoys his art. Many thanks for uploading.
They do sponsor a lot of creatives, which is great as it can be very difficult to earn a living doing what you love. We have been talking for a while and they're very supportive.
One thing I find interesting on this (although I'm totally supportive of people like yourselves getting sponsorships so you can continue inspiring the rest of us) is that it really goes to show where photography is as a business when the ads are geared toward selling gear and services to other photographers. There really isn't much of a push to attempt to sell anything toward a more mainstream audience anymore. It's about selling workshops, commissions on selling gear, views by other creatives, etc. Just an interesting state of affairs these days! I hope that your success online is translating into success on the prints and art gallery side and that one day we'll all be seeing Thomas Heaton galleries everywhere as you clearly deserve that! Definitely need to diversify our revenue streams into the future so that if the RUclips thing dries up one day you'll still be able to continue doing what you love (not that this business model will ever dry up, but I'm just saying)....
Since I started watching this channel about a year ago both your videos and photos are constantly getting better and better. I really love the intimate landscape stuff you do. Very inspiring!
Thanks Tom, the tips you shared about winter photography have helped me immensely. For someone who grew up in hot and humid climates, I don't have a clue about this style of photography!
You are one of the few people who can fill 15min of video with interesting content. Lots of great shots but I particularly like the frosty brown leaves and the frosty arid bush. I've seen similar bushes here in Wisconsin. They are so elegant, and with frost, wow!
Thomas, one of the reasons I feel that I'm being pulled into landscape photography more and more (willingly I may add), is that it draws you into nature in a lot more detail. It makes you think about what you're seeing which means more time to consider your shot. Before, when hiking, I'd walk past a lovely scene (without a camera) and say that's pretty, but, with camera in hand, I look much deeper into nature. It draws me in and gives me so much pleasure. Your video confirms yet again, that there is so much more to landscape photography. For me, it gives me get a better perspective on life and that it is the simple things that can also make it pleasurable. I'm loving your work Thomas and by the way, you're invited to Australia mate.
I know what you mean. It's funny how we all have the same thought with One Man Vlogging, but it never occurs to us to have the same thoughts when we see full productions :)
I'd watched this when it was released and this was a re-visit. I was watching it through and not skipping to get to the "tree shot" at the end. When it came up at the end of the shoot, it literally took my breath away! I've been shooting a fair amount myself, and have been working a little more on my technical chops. Seeing this again really inspires me to dig in harder and spend more time out in the wild. Thanks Thomas!
Its what you leave out that for me makes those woodland shots work - you do isolate and balance the critical elements nicely whether with selection or DOF. Really liked the symmetry on the layered piece.
Really nice video, Thomas and wonderful pictures too. I'm completely in love with the last image of the lonely tree. The blue colours are out of this world!
This video seriously made me wish I could live somewhere with an actual winter! The south-east US doesn't exactly lend itself to beautiful frosty mornings. I didn't mind the sponsor one bit, and I think you did a very good job of making it as non-abrasive as possible - of course there will be people who are still bothered by it, but I'm very happy for you to have a sponsor for your videos. You deserve the extra bit of income, and if it helps fund more lovely videos like this one, I'm all for it. Your videos never fail to be incredibly inspirational, and I'm always eager to get out and shoot after watching one. Thanks for all the free, fantastic content. :)
Thanks a lot, winter is great, but it is also very long and this lovely frosty morning happens about once a year so I wouldn't worry too much. In turn, I wish we had the beautiful sunshine you must get. I'm glad you don't mind the sponsor, I expect most people won't mind, especially as I switched off the adds. Thanks for watching!
I never realized that about the condensation from going outside in the cold for few hrs and bringing the camera in the car instead of leaving it in my bag,, always enjoy the vids and photography lessons
Thomas, I've been watching you from not more than a month or two. Normally I listen to your podcasts while working or keeping a small window peeking every now and then on one of my screens. I really have to say you are inspiring and lighting the sparkle for shooting and wandering in the nature back in me. Really you should continue to do what you do and bring your amazing art, this amazing art, to the people on weekly basis. Sincerely, Mitko
Beautiful shots. I liked the wide shot with the reeds in particular. I also liked that you showed us the back of your camera with the composition. Thanks Thomas.
Great tip at the end of the video regarding condensation. I am actually photographing in the snow tomorrow for the first time so this video is very helpful
Marvelous pictures Thomas, thanks so much for share with us that cold morning... I'm now in a hot region of my country but I'd grew up in a cold one and I miss it... you took me back to a lovely memories, thanks and congrats for your beautiful shots.
I think your videos are second to none when it comes to content that really gives proper insight into how to improve as a photographer. Really practical advice and awesome photos. Subscribed!
I loved the video. The shots you took were the sort of thing I like to do and it was a real pleasure to see how you created them. I just wish we had more hoar frosts like that. Your pictures were stunning.
I'm blaming you for my costly recent Equipment upgrades and renewing my interest in Landscape photography. I had lost interest then health issues prevented me getting out and about for a long time. Then i came across your videos by chance and my interest was renewed, i even found myself on a beach at 04:30 before sunrise. Keep the videos coming you really have inspired me to get out and about with my camera again.
v enjoyable. i have many stunning locations on my doorstep but often go to quieter places and just wander. it develops your eye and can produce cracking photos.
Really liked this one, Thomas. Some great images too. That's 100% my type of morning - just wandering around in gorgeous conditions and capturing all the little things that catch your eye. This was the same morning I was shooting, I think. I wish I'd arrived as early as you did ;-)
Thanks, it was quite refreshing to have no plan at all, but thankfully the conditions lent themselves well to that style of shooting. It was as if the morning stood still.
That's just one reason why I like woodland photography so much - Time often feels like it's standing still but at the end of a shoot you realise that 4 hours has passed by incredibly quickly. I think time just becomes lost.... or sometimes it's just me getting lost ;)
This was fascinating Tom. We don’t get these sorts of conditions here in Australia so I found it very interesting how you went about exploring the area and discovering these images. I think your approach to get in tight and capture detail definitely paid off. Plus bringing out that detail by separating the subject from the background with a wider aperture gave you some excellent results. Really appreciate you sharing your thought process on some of these shots. The crips frost gave many of those images a lovely magical feel. Stunning work and thanks again for bringing us along mate!
Love the shot of the twig. It turned out really great. It will certainly have me thinking about what I shoot when I head to Mt. Hood in March. Thanks for the inspiration.
I really enjoyed this video as you did something I really struggle with, which is concentrating on the 'smaller landscapes' as I call them. I so often look for the big vista, the big picture, the obvious composition. Here though your simple pictures of leaves and branches showed that there is so much you can do in even the most ordinary of landscapes. More of this please. Thanks
Thomas, so great to get to witness your enthusiasm for what you do. I think this is the first time you've gone full "kid in a candy store" on us! Thanks for all the great content you're giving us, and more so: thanks for giving us such great motivation! I really appreciate it
This one was great. Nice to see you take more images. I really enjoyed your obvious enthusiasm. And then the rejoinder that the next one will suck. Makes me feel better about my own photography failures. Your videos are the kick up the backside I need to get out more. Snow forecast here for tomorrow, so I'm going out tomorrow morning. Thanks for the link to the gloves.
I wonder if you had any opportunity of shooting towards the sun with some frosty bits in your foreground. When you become quiet to tell us about the frost melting, there is a sunburst behind you... looked very interesting. I love the last image. keep up the hard work. Your description of many of the images "absolutely magic" made me smile, I guess that's how it must have felt, magically overwhelming sights!
Your videos are always my favorite RUclips moment of the week. This video was really good and I can't wait to get up early and photograph the sunrise tomorrow!
First of all, I really enjoy your videos. But, this is a perfect example of why being guided by your passion is a must in every type of art. I absolutely enjoyed this video and your natural way of taking photos, how you capture the whole process as well, but somehow, not as much as your previous ones. Well, I absolutely respect the effort. By the way, this is so normal and I totally understand that you have to do some sponsored content as a freelance photographer. Anyway... great job man. Just keep up the great work and your inspiration among the ones who need. Cheers!
Thomas, I just watched this video and have to say I really enjoyed it. You manage to keep the viewer engaged and feel as if we're taking part in the shoot. Really well done! Oh, and I love the photos!
Thumbs up for the advice with bag and cold equipment 🙌

All those images are beautiful. I really liked 'Winter Layers', but 'The Star of the Show' is particularly breathtaking.
I must say - it's so enjoyable to watch someone do what they love! The way you admire what surrounds you is inspiring!
Loved the layered shot but the best thing has to be your enthusiasm which just make us all want get out there with our cameras.
The scene of the frozen, shaded foreground against the thawed sunny background looked amazing.
I do a fair bit of landscape myself. I find your videos most inspirational and great to see someone who really enjoys his art. Many thanks for uploading.
That's very kind, thank you for watching.
It's great that Squarespace sponsor so many creatives! They really care and their service looks awesome!
They do sponsor a lot of creatives, which is great as it can be very difficult to earn a living doing what you love. We have been talking for a while and they're very supportive.

Your videos are so lovely. You know, you're kind of like Bob Ross. Very comforting to just put a video on and listen before bed.
That last image was amazing lad, well done!
Thanks a lot!
Every time Thomas says Luuvly and Fantastic take a shot.
The last shot was by far my favorite. Amazing.
Since I started watching this channel about a year ago both your videos and photos are constantly getting better and better. I really love the intimate landscape stuff you do. Very inspiring!
That's very kind of you to say, thanks a lot!
Thanks Tom, the tips you shared about winter photography have helped me immensely. For someone who grew up in hot and humid climates, I don't have a clue about this style of photography!
'I don't know where I am, and I don't know where I'm going'. A popular outlook on life. And probably a good song lyric, I'm gonna nick it!
That last one is incredible!
Don't worry Thomas, we love your complaining!
A winter wonderland - doesn't get much better than mornings like this. Top video Thomas.
You are one of the few people who can fill 15min of video with interesting content. Lots of great shots but I particularly like the frosty brown leaves and the frosty arid bush. I've seen similar bushes here in Wisconsin. They are so elegant, and with frost, wow!
Wonderful shots. I'm so glad to see you discovering the wonders of intimate landscapes. It's a whole new world.
It really is! Thanks a lot.
Thank you for freezing your ass off to bring us these wonderful photographs. The last image was especially stunning.
last tree is amazing.
Thank you, sir.
So that's where you took one of your favorite pics from 2016! I do love that shot. As always, appreciate learning about your process.
Glad to see a fellow winter photography lover! I live in the US in Michigan and theres fantastic shots to be had during this time of year!
I'll bet there is and I bet it is colder than over here.
really liked how in depth you went into the logic of your choices
I enjoy watching you explore different landscape photography locales; and this encouraged me to get out more this Winter.
The last image was fantastic. Definitely your best one in this video.

Loved the photos in this episode Thomas. Lovely colours and light.
That's very kind, thank you.
That last ‘tree’ photo is fantastic! 😮
Winters mornings are just brilliant. Hopefully we’ll get some soon.
This showed up in my suggestions today and i ended up watching your videos the whole day. Came back here to say GREAT WORK MAN!
I like those shots where we see you walking around, but I can't help but think how you had to prepare the shot for it :D
I know what you mean. It's funny how we all have the same thought with One Man Vlogging, but it never occurs to us to have the same thoughts when we see full productions :)

thanks for that tip at the end. I did this 2 weeks ago. lesson learned
Oh no, hope you didn't cause too much damage.
The last picture was incredible! Definitely one of your bests
That's very kind, thank you.
The last shot on the video is absolutely amazing, So simple yet complex with the light and the beauty is just perfect. Brilliant work a usual.
That's very kind, thank you!
Its what you leave out that for me makes those woodland shots work - you do isolate and balance the critical elements nicely whether with selection or DOF. Really liked the symmetry on the layered piece.
This guy sure loves his work....and poetry obviously
That last image was stunning. I'm looking forward to next weeks video. You can learn as much about photography on the bad shoots as the good shoots.
Thank you so much!!!
Obviously it is not necessery to travel far away for good photos...
... art and beauty is right out of the door...
The images are beautiful. Winter has a lot to offer.
I'm always seeing compositions I would make in the backgrounds of your videos.
the useful insight I got out of this video: "I'm the type of photographer who likes to take his time" - thx for that!
Really nice video, Thomas and wonderful pictures too. I'm completely in love with the last image of the lonely tree. The blue colours are out of this world!
I always come back to this video this time of year, one of my favorites. All your images are just fantastic too!
Summer here in Oz.
Thomas Iv learnt so much about landscape photography from your Vlogs.
I always look forward to them
Thank You 😊
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, passion and dedication you bring to photography.

Simon Baxter you should meet up for a vlog together , that would be interesting to see 😉
Brent jones What a brilliant video that would be. Great idea.

You are very good learner. Following you since 1.5 years. Love your videos.
I am wondering why your channel is not verified yet by RUclips :/
Thank you for the inspiration! They're all fantastic images but that last tree was so amazing!

Yes we do get those conditions... rarely though
you need to move to Canberra! -8C mornings, gorgeous.
Love the shot of the twig. It turned out really great. It will certainly have me thinking about what I shoot when I head to Mt. Hood in March. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for the memories of my homeland. Now living in Perth,Oz have not seen a frost for 10 years.
Last image my fav.Cheers
Great details shots. I really enjoy shooting in winter because it can simplify a busy composition.
I really enjoyed this video as you did something I really struggle with, which is concentrating on the 'smaller landscapes' as I call them. Yes, I couldn't agree more. It took me a while to find the beauty of the intimate landscape. It's like a new world of photography.
Wow! the 4th and 5th pictures were so amazing! Outstanding job Thomas!
That last photo though, fantastic!
The last photo was my favoritie. Excellent as usual.
What a great morning that was. Stunning images. Almost felt the cold. Thanks for the video
It really was a great morning, thanks for watching.
That last photo is fantastic!
I love going out and photographing on day's like this!
Great video and some lovely shots.
This video make me wanna go shooting photo's by my self. NOW! Even now it is at night😀
Ha! Go in the morning!!
I'm happy to see you getting sponsorships now, Thomas!
Wow, last shot was great and good tips, never thought about simply blocking the light (Sun) with a pad!
You're fast becoming my favourite photographer Mr Heaton. Absolutely loving your videos. Awesome stuff.
Thomas that last image is AMAZING! So atmospheric!
Thomas, so great to get to witness your enthusiasm for what you do. I think this is the first time you've gone full "kid in a candy store" on us! Thanks for all the great content you're giving us, and more so: thanks for giving us such great motivation! I really appreciate it
Hi Thomas,
The leaves are lovely, but the last tree image is really special. Bet that one will be in your next book!! Best, Bob
LOvely vid Thomas. Its nice to see you delve into the process of creating the more intimate images
Wow! Just wow! And the one of the brown leaves is my favourite.
That's very kind of you to say, thank you.
Opened my eyes for heaps of new images. Thanks, enjoyed this video a lot.
Fantastic images, there are many good photographers out there but you can see, feel and capture outstanding moments. Excellent video.
Absolutely wonderful images. What a lovely place to experience in the freezing wether.
It was great to explore. I'm quite glad that I didn't know the area, this just made me look harder.
I wonder if you had any opportunity of shooting towards the sun with some frosty bits in your foreground. When you become quiet to tell us about the frost melting, there is a sunburst behind you... looked very interesting. I love the last image. keep up the hard work. Your description of many of the images "absolutely magic" made me smile, I guess that's how it must have felt, magically overwhelming sights!
the last picture.....AWESOME!!! Thanks for the inspiration man as always.🖒
Well, It's the middle of May, and having watched your video, I'm now ready for winter. Well done, sir!
That last photo is magical. Great work!
Thanks a lot, glad you like it.
Your videos are always my favorite RUclips moment of the week. This video was really good and I can't wait to get up early and photograph the sunrise tomorrow!
First of all, I really enjoy your videos. But, this is a perfect example of why being guided by your passion is a must in every type of art. Amazing video! Every image was even more gorgeous than the last. Beautiful.
Really appreciate your courage to share your journey. Love it.
Cracking images yet again but the last is an absolute belter!
That's some beautiful scenery love the frost time of the year.
Thomas, I just watched this video and have to say I really enjoyed it. You manage to keep the viewer engaged and feel as if we're taking part in the shoot. Really well done! Oh, and I love the photos!
