    A number of RUclipsrs have been talking about 'false positivity' in vlogs recently. This video contributes to that discussion very well. You could easily have cut out the bits that didn't go well, but you didn't. Nice work 👍

    So many don't realize that renowned landscape photographers like A, Adams got their shots because they simply spent so much time out there at these locations. They were not on "vacation" and stumbled across a shot. They LIVED in these locations and for every shot you see, there were days and countless hours of nothing. It is wonderful when we are able to get great shots, but the truth is that most fo the time we will not be able to. We get what we can, but the truly great shots take great luck in timing, or a lot of TIME being where you know things could fall into place. Being able to put yourself in the right place at a time that might offer you a wonderful shot will eliminate some of the "luck factor", but as they say, it is what is it. Keep shooting, and keep looking for the next great shot.

      I did alot of traveling and shooting and only having 1 sunset or sunrise to get a shot. If it fails I just move on and accept the situation as it was. But because of this I had time to get to les known places and been able to take pictures of I love while I never knew they existed.
      I might have missed my hoped image of a know location but I was also able to capture rare seen locations in the photography world with surprisingly amazing sunsets/compositions. Most important thing is enjoy the trip and the experience.

    In the mid 90's I drove 6hrs to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore for a 5 day backpacking trip. Arriving I discovered my 5 rolls of Velvia 50 were safe at home. Nearest town which might have Velvia was 70 miles away. After a 140 mile round trip I hit the trail with several rolls of nearly outdated Ektachrome and some print film. I love digital!

    I’m afraid to say, I take some comfort in knowing that this happens to other landscape photographers and it’s not just me. First the weather, then the camera battery, but I had to laugh when you said the video battery was on it’s way out as well. I can certainly relate to this situation and understand your frustration when something like this happens. There’s been a few occasions when I’v gone to my bag to grab that second battery or mic for the video or filter adaptor and it’s nowhere to be found and with complete disbelief I ask myself out loud, why is this not in my bag.
    However you persevered, which I think is an important trait of any landscape photographer and you were rewarded with a beautiful shot of the lake. What’s the access like to lake Windermere?
    Tom, this was a great story and an important aspect of what we do…it’s not always easy and things don’t always go your way. Thank you for sharing this experience mate!

    • @ThomasHeatonPhoto
      @ThomasHeatonPhoto  7 лет назад +10

      Thanks for your comment. Access to the lake itself is not great. There is a LOT of private land and "Do not enter" signs, but there are plenty of public areas, it's just frustrating that you can't explore any further than the designated boundaries.

    Videos about failure are just as interesting. They show that the bad stuff happens to us all! I've driven for 90 minutes to Snowdonia and realised when I got there that I've forgotten something too. I've also driven for 2 hours to a location for a night sky shot, rather stupidly believing the BBC weather forecast that the sky was going to be clear, only to arrive to completely overcast skies.
    I'm still in the planning stages of a trip to the Scottish Highlands for mid-late February and am making lists of things to take so I don't forget anything. Knowing my horrible luck, I'll forget my battery charger or SD cards, or something. And the weather will be utterly horrible all week. And it's a 7 hour drive from where I live too.

    • @bujin1977
      @bujin1977 7 лет назад +7

      Oh yeah, and I just remembered the other classic from last summer. I knew the Red Arrows were going to be flying through Snowdonia towards RAF Valley. I researched their flight path so I knew exactly where to be and where to look at what time. I drove 90 minutes to Llanberis and camped out ready, and waited. And waited. And waited. And waited for another 30 minutes past the time they were supposed to fly past. And then gave up.
      I found out later that I hadn't researched the route *quite* as thoroughly as I thought and was actually in the wrong valley...

    • @bujin1977
      @bujin1977 7 лет назад

      I agree with global001. I think the public is mostly aware of the complexities of predicting the weather, but I just find the BBC weather app to be more inaccurate than some other sources. Although, to be fair, I haven't done any sort of scientific testing to back that hypothesis up - it's just the impression I get from using BBC weather and comparing it to other sources.

    Videos where things don't work out as planned help to keep things real. Honestly if every post is a spectacular success the channel can become a bit boring and also discouraging because our own failures look to be irregular making many of us question whether we will ever be "good" at photography. It helps to see that even the pros have bad days and that a lot of time is spent failing before succeeding. As always... love your work whether showing us the phenomenal days or the dismal ones.

  • @mattdemoraes

    Great video Thomas. I think it's really important to share these sorts of stories because photography isn't the glamorous walk in the park a lot of people think it is when they first get going (me included). It's often a really gritty and challenging activity that becomes as much about your mind as it does your body in conditions like those. Most of us have endured weather like that with a bleak prospect of success, but it makes the beer and digestives all the more enjoyable at the end of the day! Great to know someone with your pedigree in the photography world is also just as human as the rest of us.

    Thanks Thomas I really enjoyed this video. Landscape photography is definitely a combination of frustration, perspiration, patience and elation. The 'failed' shoots make the good ones all the more special. A lot of photography videos are all about perfect conditions whereas this one shows the value of patience, being willing to adapt, moving on when it isn't going to happen and being prepared. I love that you were willing to share your ' rookie mistake' because it's comforting to know that these things happen to everyone (I've made the memory card version of this mistake). Cheers mate!

    I suspect that those who enjoyed this video the most were those who could empathize with your day. I know I can, sitting here in my home, looking out the window at less than ideal conditions. Struggling to get motivated to seek out an image in the damp, dreary, brown ground and flat light of winter. I take comfort in not only knowing that others make mistakes, but more importantly that people exist who are willing to share said mistakes. I'd like to say everyone knows other people make mistakes, but far too many videos and tutorials exist that don't paint an accurate picture of the reality of photography. It would be a shame for newer photographers to give up because they don't have realistic expectations and the more seasoned of us become apathetic because we haven't received a good boot to the backside every now and again. Thanks for the video.

    Always great stuff Thomas! The worst experience for me was having all of my gear stolen in San Francisco a few years back and It was 100% my fault! After taking pictures in a heavy tourist area I put my gear in my vehicle and then walked away to go eat dinner. Thus anyone watching knew there was very expensive gear sitting in an unattended vehicle! Oh well you live and learn...

    This has probably been the most important one of your videos for me. 9/10 times I go out to take landscape photography, something just craps on it. Last weekend I drove for 2 hours, then 4WD for another 4 to reach a location. When I got there I realised that my filter holder had fallen out of my bag. Still managed to get an okay photo by my standards by holding filters to the lens. It was a scouting mission anyway though so no biggy, but it does get you down. It's nice to see that the best of us still have those days.

    RUclips needs more of this kind of video. The reason most people give up on things these days is because they see the "pros" doing things which look easy in a 5 min video where they want to make themselves look as good as they can to feed their ego. Showing this side is very comforting to anyone that's stood out in the middle of nowhere for hours on end and still not got the shot. I've wasted whole shoots that cost money to set up before because it just wasn't happening. So thank you very much for showing this Thomas. It's a good testament of your character.

    There is so much honesty and reality in this video! It would be a class study video for future photographers. I mean it is just like this in reality! You get up long before sunrise, sometimes you have to travel a great deal or hike off into the wood under miserable conditions. You're so tired that you forget things like batteries and memory cards. I once forgot to change out my cards from a previous shoot and took off with nearly full cards. It was very similar to this, I only had enough room for a few shots lol But like he said, it wouldn't be any fun if it was easy. My landscape photos isn't just a place frozen in time, it's a memory of the adventure that went along with creating that image. Great video dude!

    I really enjoyed this Video. Its the reality of what we go through. People just see the images but don't understand the effort behind them. Man! I've had some bad days. Forgot all of my memory cards one day. Thought i'd slipped them in the bag but left them on my desk. Another time forgot to charge my second battery. Forgot filters. Forgot to pack a specific lens! I have even had bad days when it all seemed good. Just by being disappointed with the images. Some i was excited about just didn't quite look like i though they would. I swear in the dark near beach head. Waiting for the sunrise. A storm came out of nowhere and the winds were so bad for about 20 minutes, i thought i was going to get blown off the cliff!

Not to say being happy and posetive isn't great, I just enjoy how you always persevere no matter the circumstances. Thank you for your great videos. I am a photographer with architectural training and I noticed something in this video that I consider important to mention. At 9:13 you have your tripod center column nearly fully extended. This reduces the stability of the camera platform the higher you extend it away from the anchor point of the tripod legs. A triangle is the most stable structural form. With the column extended, the camera may waver, however slightly, because you have lost the triangulation and have to rely on the tightness of the post itself. The result is a monopod on top of a tripod. The only time I extend my center column, when I use one at all, is when I am shooting architecture indoors and may raise it an inch or two for the kind of perspective correction you described with your finger. Keep up the good work!

    As others have said it's our "failures" that humanize us and how we deal with them that define us. So don't worry, I think you're doing alright. Besides, I'd have been proud to have taken either of those images. And you made the video worth it even had you not had good images by explaining your process, explaining how you were passing the time waiting for that perfect shot. The biggest thing I struggle with is patience and your videos, especially ones like this, are perfect reminders of how slowing down and waiting for the right moment is worth the result.

    Good video to illustrate the effort required to get those good shots that some people think they simply need the latest camera to get. So much for megapixels and focus modes. Turns out what you need most is perseverance, time, a little luck. And some fresh batteries.
    But what really struck me about this video is the production quality. This video feels like a BBC documentary and not someone filming himself on RUclips with a selfie stick. The sweeps, the mood setting, the background shots, the post editing - this thing is miles and miles beyond anything else I've seen in terms of production value. I don't usually comment on videos but you should feel really proud of this video for the production value alone.
    The two photos you did manage to take were great. Well worth it. Not such a bad day after all.

    Hey Thomas great video. I just went through a bad day of landscape photography today. Went to a spot for a sunset photo overlooking an ice rink and ice castle with a lift bridge in the background. The weather wasn't working with me as it was overcast and then eventually fog set in concealing everything. Like you said, just one of those days. I think this is a video that most people who consider themselves photographers, whether pro or amateur, can identify with. Nothing like dedicating a whole day to something, sometimes in miserable conditions, with nothing to show for it. However, I must point out something I think you overlooked, at least for me, I've created memories even in those trying days. Being out in nature, even at -10 with snow on your neck is one of the great things about landscape photography. Those lows make the highs so much sweeter.
    Edit: Just watched other videos and saw you do mention the experience sans photos. Good stuff.

    Fellow photog here ... I noticed you walked past the fallen tree at 0:38 ... to me ... in that wet light natural colorful setting ... would have been great to find amazing compositions and closer details on that tree (and possibly with the trees behind it as a backdrop) ... such amazing drama can be discovered from scenes like that. Closeups, twisted shapes, warm colors from wet wood, etc ... I would have spent 30 min right there ... and no need for a cloud break. :)

    I really like the first image you've shared in this video. Love the interplay of colours and the contrast between the four (three layers of ground + one for the sky) layers and how it emphasises depth. And I love the serenity I find in an otherwise dramatic image.
    I think I could consider making it the second Thomas Heaton print in my slowly growing collection.
    Oh and I hear you about the hard life of a landscape photographer. I don't spend as much time photographing as I wish I could, but I've experienced the kind of difficult days you're talking about in this video. Glad that's not stopping you.

    Good show and excellent story Thomas - your voice overs, supporting music and B roll cuts really helped motivate the scenes. And as all landscape photographers will relate, there's nothing quite as satisfying as capturing that split second shot where the light is perfect... or the disappointment when you're not ready or the shot never materializes :(
    Or we have a gear problem. Or something critical or costly breaks or gets damaged. Or we lose something or forget and leave it behind. Or we screwed up the setting, especially a rookie setting like a focus issue. Or we didn't setup in the right place. Or we got distracted. Or we smudged the lens. Or bumped the camera during a shot. Or forgot to put on the lens hood. Or we didn't bring a critical tool, adapter, connector, cable, filter, memory card/s, towel/camera cover (rain), and yes batteries! Then there's all the other snafus recording video, audio, lost files, car problems, parking problems, trail issues, wrong clothing attire, food/water issues, people issues, unforeseen weather elements including wind... NO WONDER LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY IS SOOOoooo much fun ;)
