There are probably quite a few people on here thinking that your 'failed' shots were actually very good! Nature isn't balanced and photographs are more than just calculations. It can sometimes be something that one person see's. You have a natural eye for photography which you have shown countless times before. As one of the most respected landscape photographers out there, you should give yourself a break, perfection is in the eye of the beholder! Great vid Thom.
Came here to say this, in a roundabout way. "You can see here from these unprocessed raw files, they at first glance look great... but the composition and the balance, its all off." ...I'll trust his eye, because it looks great to me. I'd stare at and enjoy that image as much as the others in the video. Maybe there's a degree of trying to please other photographers rather than just the general public. Maybe if I stare at it for an hour, I won't like it because I'll finally see this imbalance a keen photographer will see/feel amost naturally? I still enjoy it, regardless. :)
Fully agree. I love Thomas’s and many other channels and have learned a lot from them. In a lot of ways I’m glad I’m just an enthusiast rather than a pro as I get a great deal of enjoyment taking photos not even half as good as the ones the pro’s are disappointed with! Probably not the attitude to have as I’m unlikely to improve much but it works for me.
I agree with you there! There seems to be a lot of pressure in the landscape photography world to create balance in compositions, which obviously does work very very nicely. But, I dunno, like you said nature isn't balanced the way we see it through a viewfinder and I think that can be used to effect... probably easier said than done and maybe one day I'll put my money where my mouth is... or perhaps I just take too many unbalanced shots lol! Nevertheless, awesome video from Thomas and spectacular photography as always.
In this day and age of social media where content creators curate their lives and only show their "best moments", it's great to see you still include in your videos your 'failed' shots.
The three Tarns are difficult to shoot in the morning but in late autumn, for example November in the evening, the light hits Bowfell and makes for a beautiful composition
Nice to see a classic Thomas Heaton video of some classic landscape photography. They were all beautiful shots. That camp site looked stunning. Much prefer this film to 10 minutes of watching a dart fall out the wall.
Like the comments below...I liked all the pictures. On another note my son purchased your book for me (Mother's day gift) and it has been so enjoyable. Love the pictures and stories with them. But most of all all the videos linked in the back takes this to the next level. Can't wait for the next one. Thanks for all that you do!
Every time something like that happens, it reminds me of the “not everything that is beautiful makes a beautiful photo”… as a way of relaxing myself and just taking a photo to enjoy the moment, instead of focusing too much in the outcome of the photo.
You are not alone. I have been there at dawn four January's in a row and its hard to put a satisfying scene together. Its a spot which promises so much and draws you back because it is quite difficult to believe that you cannot organise the elements in a more satisfying configuration. The east face of Scafell catches alpenglow on a January morning but it seems too far away when shooting west over the little tarn with a wide Ange. Bowfell gets in the way of everything to the east. Sometimes the key just cannot be found.
My favourite Tom Heaton content. Camping in the mountains. Loved the balance in the pano due to the light hitting the hill on the left and the gap in the clouds on the right.
I’d call this a ‘classic’ Thomas Heaton video. It’s got all the elements that make your videos great, and I love to see you camping. It’s back to basics, and done very well. You say it’s good for the soul to go camping, and it really shows in your video. Big thumbs up.
Tom, I continue to enjoy your videos - brilliant work, as ever. There is one thing though..... that lovely vibrant OR down jacket has finally turned the corner from "weathered", to "slightly gross" :) please take this in good humour, if we were talking face to face, you'd see me smiling while I break the news. Please buy some graingers down wash and give that jacket the TLC it deserves after so much good service. Clive
Oh come on Thomas! You cannot be so critical about these pictures, especially the last one cropped square. As You’re my professor of simplicity and square classes, it’s another example of job well done, not to mention beautiful light. I know, good teachers set their personal bars higher and higher, and so do You. Keep going, great video as always!
As a former truck driver traveling all over the US, especially the west, I often struggled like you. Beautiful light but no usable composition. The thing I learned is that when you see a beautiful light do a 180 and look behind you.
Whenever you stand there explaining what you are about to take I'm like "take the shot man, it's slipping away!!" Anyways, thank you for the content. I'm from Ukraine and at this time going out with my camera is not a safe and easy thing to do, so I fulfill my photography curiosity by watching videos like yours
I'll let you in to a secret. I often grab the shot first, to make sure I have it, then I will film my piece and shoot it again 🙂 Best of luck, man. I hope things get better soon 👍
Loved this video, might be the best one in a while. I still enjoy seeing that all your shots don't work out how you wanted them, helps us mortals feel a little better.
So THAT'S why they call you a landscape photographer. :) Nice Thomas. Very nice. Tough luck in the morning but then...you're a landscape photographer, yes, a heck of a landscape photographer. Thanks for taking us along.
I quite enjoyed vicariously tagging along on your outing! Lots of good info and it’s good to know others also struggle with Mother Nature when she is less than cooperative.
Hi Thomas, appreciate you may get this comment a lot but can I just say. Thomas Heaton, wild camping, in the uk, taking landscape images. This is the reason I subscribed to this channel many years ago and the reason I'm still here today. such easy watching and very calming in what is a very busy world. great video as always. thank you and keep doing it. love it.
The first shot you took I was thinking was going to be a fail, but man you have a gift. You saw beauty in that boring peak. It’s hard to get good shots like that in the middle of the day. Thanks for the inspiration.
I'm still waiting for the "big reveal" when you show the other 4 people of the production crew who went with you. Only joking, it's still amazing that you get the quality and personal documentary feel on your own. The amount of back and forth you must do to set up shots of you walking past, etc. As to the photos you weren't happy with, I'm glad you took them. Digital costs nothing and occasionally you see a crop that works that you didn't see at the time. And, in the worst case, it's a nice personal memory and a handy reference if you visit an area again. Keep up the inspiring work👍
still don't fully understand how you make videos and photos as often as you do but as a loyal viewer I am so happy you do lol. These videos make my day
Nice to see you back in a vista and shooting non 1:1's. I would have been happy to take many of those compositions but guess that's the difference between me as a hobbyist and you as a pro.
The best times for landscape photography are early morning and late in the day. Midday has harsh light and short shadows. Too much contrast, I suppose. Have you considered sleeping midday and shooting from the afternoon golden hour until early morning light, then sleeping. What I'm saying is, you find yourself in places with terrific landscape compositions but also places with little light pollution which is heaven for nightscape photographers. Nick Page comes to mind. If you ever need a change of pace from the same old same old, stretching a bit may be the cure. Adding the Milky Way to your landscapes may do the trick. After a few moonless nights with clear dark skies shooting the Milky Way or capturing a series of landscape shots during a meteor shower for stacking later may refresh you enough to get back to your venturing to lovely landscape and light opportunities.
Tom being Tom, camping, humour, banter and most of all great images, even the ones that so called failed. I could watch this format for days on end. Thanks Tom 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Great Video, Camping! rather you than me! Love 03:43, well done! loved the Pano, excellent!, love the fact you sleep in your clothes, what mountain climber doesn't! I love the fact you climbed up away from the camp site only to return, wow what a wonderful! the old "look behind you" rule, It's kinda nice to see a fail every now and again! well done Thomas, thank you
Yup. When I get the text message notification during lunch at work on Wednesdays I know that I have something to look forward to watching when I get home. And Baumgartner Restoration on Mondays.
Great video Tom. Really enjoyed this one, and a break from minimalism. Also good to see a couple of images in a different ratio to square or pano. Not saying I don’t like the minimalistic square or pano crop, but this made a nice change and reminded me somewhat of your early work and RUclips videos. Last time I was up there (many years ago) I went up over Pike’O’Blisco onto Crinkle Crags and then a white out descended. As it was winter everything was white. I messed up my navigation and having decided to descend went the wrong way and dropped down into Eskdale. The phone box (pre mobile phones) didn’t have a phone in it, so I backtracked to a farm to ask if they would phone a taxi for us to get back to Langdale campsite as it was getting dark. The farmer’s wife was sympathetic to us and told us that loads of people make the same mistake, and gave us a mug of tea and a slab of apple pie while waited for the taxi in her kitchen. When the taxi arrived and picked us up, he told us that he’d made the same mistake also. Anyway the day after we decided to take the farmers wife some flowers for helping us out, but we couldn’t find the farm! It should have been just off the main path, but wasn’t there. So we were either saved by a ghost, or were worse at navigating than we thought. Not a photography story, but a great memory of being in the area and experiencing the generosity of local people.
Just bought a tent for the purpose of wild camping so I can appreciate what you are saying in this video even more. Exciting news about a 2nd book as well. :-)
I know composition is very important Thomas, especially for someone who makes a living from photography but taking the odd unbalanced image is not going to tarnish your impeccable reputation. You explain to us in the Vlog that your not happy with the composition and the reason why but I would imagine the majority of us would forgive you the odd one here and there 🤔 if nothing else it’s a record of the trip and that particular location and it’s still beautiful to look at for most. The pano was superb by the way 👌
"oh me knees"....yup, can definitely relate! Excited to hear there's another book in the works...I love the first one. No pressure though, I'll buy it whenever it eventually comes out 🙂
Thank you Tom for a beautiful hike up the hills! As a graphic designer I immediately saw the potential in that pano for the cover of your new book as a wrap-around the front and back of the book? Also, I do not agree with you and the ‘failure’ statements you made about your morning shoot at the tarn. Even though I was not there with you that morning for me that situation was all about that strong water-mirror edge with the still water reflecting the mountain peaks over the edge. I think you captured that well Tom! Thanks for letting us come with you on that beautiful hike Tom!
your reality comes across so often and well keep it up, as the character Old Lodge Skins in the movie Little Big Man says; "sometimes the magic works and sometimes it doesn't"
Been watching your videos for years now because I enjoy your lifestyle and presentation of landscape photography in the nature. Your videos really have that zen-like effect for viewers - that said, please give up on this new experiment with techno music (at the end of the video and during drone shot) - really disturbes the landscape tranquillity mood. Your usual calm and inspiring soundtracks are the image of your videos, stick with them. Best regards!
As a long time fan, I really enjoy Thomas' images because they - well to me anyway - follow a simple philosophy: that is, "Less is More". I really enjoy the simple minimalist shots that Thomas presents. They draw the viewers eye(s) to specific aspects within each (uncluttered) image. Solid work again Mr. Heaton...
And here I am sitting in The Netherlands, finding it hard to believe there are places on Earth which are so beautifully natural and not full of people :D :P (Netherlands is great but oh man, one can miss true nature when living here.) Great video as always :)
Nothing better than a wild camping trip! Beautiful video Thomas, funnily enough I liked those pink reflection images best, I think what you describe as 'nothing' has its own serene beauty. Guess composition is also somewhat a matter of taste
Ah yes, Thomas Heaton, the lengthy brit with the soft belly, kind of brit that goes down first in the trench in any WWII movie and his mates go "oh no, they got Thomas!" and that's the rallying call for the next days charge, all the lads yell "for Thomas!" as they scamper from out the trench. Love me some Thomas Heaton. Right on sir.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Basic, well-structured. Balanced with tips, gear, location and beautiful images. Makes me want to get off the streets and into the wild for a change of pace and environment.
Haven't been out shooting and camping in the mountains in 2 years now. So looking forward to my next multiday hike, so this is my methadone. Thanks man.
I was up the Mournes ten days ago for a weekend with the Shimoda X70 and the same tripod as you plus some supposedly light weight camping gear. I may have taken your name in vain Mr. Heaton!! Top tip, bin the Firepot meals and check out RealTurmat from Norway, well tasty
Thomas Heaton at his best. Great taste, great texture. Five stars. Fantastic video Tom, I think your best for a long time. I'm impressed with your photos as much as your filming - having in mind that you do it all by yourself, somewhere in between chasing the light. For me, these vidos are much more inspiring than all the great trips to Nepal or Africa.
Thomas you and your video's are so wonderful. I've decided to return to landscape photography after a 2 year hiatus and your videos have been a helped greatly. Now if only we could have you and Joe Cornish do one together :)
Thomas Your videos are great have learned so much from you as a landscape photographer and trying and take a lot of your ideas, keep on going great content and tips
I remember watching several of your videos where you pointed out how you struggled in summer for inspiration. Yet here you are nearing midsummer's day and revelling in some spectacular conditions and light. Which only emphasises that great light can happen at any time of the year and any time of day. One of my favourite images is a panorama i took in the height of summer as a passing storm produced the most amazing burst of light..for about a minute! Great video and superb photos, in particular love the light in the first shot and the pano.
Thanks Tom - I really love your downbeat, say it as it is, northern style. Its refreshing. . . and I also want to appreciate how much effort and work you put into producing your excellent videos. . . Thumbs up from me 👍

@@Ian_N05 Ian, I think that’s exactly the right attitude. We take photos to be happy, and seeking perfection rarely leads to happiness. 👍

Wow! As the kids say, that pano is fire. 🔥 🔥 🔥
In this day and age of social media where content creators curate their lives and only show their "best moments", it's great to see you still include in your videos your 'failed' shots.
You know what? Waking up to that spectacular view photograph or not would just make my day and even week!
I enjoyed the scene.... it's okay to not come away with a portfolio image. just admiring the beauty is a good night spent out in the wild
Sometimes the images just don't work but the experience is what is key.
Very cool view...beautiful mountains enchanting...beautiful lake...
Great location for camping and photography activities...

15:38 "It's just good for soul." Those words resonate so much.
I don't often comment, however I must say I really think that the second "Image that didn't work" definitely worked, really nice shot.

Geez, you can’t have everything. Two stunning images in one day would do quite well for me. Everything in this chapter is terrific.
My favourite Tom Heaton content. Camping in the mountains. Loved the balance in the pano due to the light hitting the hill on the left and the gap in the clouds on the right.

The image at 9:31 was breathtaking!!
You are your worst critic! The unedited shots of sunrise were beautiful! Maybe not perfect composition, but beautiful!
Cracking video as always, nothing better than camping high in the mountains.
My mind raced back to many failed panos because I hadn’t manually focused! Thanks for that tip 👌🏼

Now this is classic Thomas Heaton at best. Stunning landscapes. Camping and vlogs. Another one that goes into the looping playlist.
Thanks again for one more video of the inside of a photographers work .
Image or no image, your camping videos are always fun 👌🏻
Shot of the trip for me was the Pano. So much drama in the land and sky. Top notch.
Thomas you and your video's are so wonderful. I've decided to return to landscape photography after a 2 year hiatus and your videos have been a helped greatly. Now if only we could have you and Joe Cornish do one together :)
Thomas
Your videos are great have learned so much from you as a landscape photographer and trying and take a lot of your ideas, keep on going great content and tips
Fantastic journey & photos Tom! I'm coming to the lake district in August for 3 days and cannot wait 🍻
Outstanding shots my friend, great video, the environment is so different from what I'm used to visiting.
That ridge line pano is wow
Thanks Tom - I really love your downbeat, say it as it is, northern style. Its refreshing. . . and I also want to appreciate how much effort and work you put into producing your excellent videos. . . Thumbs up from me 👍
