    For those who want to see a Game Boy Color version: ruclips.net/video/yCe_vuNdJOE/видео.html
    Yes, it includes colors!
    ...and the original version on an Analogue Pocket: twitter.com/diconx/status/1482473071709761538
    Unfortunately, there are some minor glitches that are not present on the original Game Boy, but there is more contrast. So much more contrast.

      It's one of RUclips/etc's biggest issues. I've never myself made anything even a tiny fraction as interesting as this, but I have actually done some HW modding stuff that niche groups of people would be extremely interested in. The very thought of having to document it and produce something worthy of today's RUclips standard is still second to the thought of then having it die to bad SEO. I dare not think what sort of projects exist from people who just don't want to touch the internet scene because of its intricacies.

    This man has the perfect combination of technical know-how, creativity, and grit. On a technical level, making a wifi adapter for a device is not a new idea, nor is using it to stream over a network, but overcoming the technical hurdles of a game-boy by building an adapter is a stroke of genius. It's an obvious solution once it's presented to you, but not so much when you have to be the first one to come up with the solution. Streaming GTA V is the icing on the cake. Hats off to your creativity man. I salute you!

      The 3D stuff is done in Blender and the PCB in particular is based on a 3D model export from KiCad. I once recorded my process here for an older project, but be warned that this is unedited and therefore a loooong session:
      ruclips.net/video/1Pjr0xkuyhU/видео.html
      Also note, that a few things have been simplified since then. KiCad now exports WRL files with applied materials, for example, and my old video did not yet have any solder joints.

    One way to bump up the framerate, you seem to have a lot of blocks in every frame that are quite similar. So with 24 extra tiles, use 12 of them each in upper and lower vram that define 12 gradient patterns from dark to light, which will stay on the gameboy and not change. Then pre-define that a certain portion of each frame must be encoded as one of these gradients (so, pre-process it on the computer such that in each frame you sort the list of blocks in the frame by which are the most similar to one of the gradient blocks, and you then replace a fixed number of them every frame). Thus you will cut down on how many blocks you will transfer every frame. You should be able to pretty easily use this to achieve a higher framerate. Of course there must be some overhead to start each frame by specifying which blocks of the frame use which pre-defined gradient blocks.

    What if you did interlaced video updates? That would give you 40fps interlaced.

    • @ThereOughtaBe
      @ThereOughtaBe  2 года назад +6

      Quite sure that it would work. There is enough time between each hblank to jump to the next address. I have to see how it looks on a proper screen at some point. I used the original one to make the point that it is running on the original hardware, but the screen is so slow that I do not think I would see the difference at the moment.

    If you need a faster way to copy from a fixed source address, and are okay with the writes happening in reverse order, you can use Stack Push into VRAM. Such as "ld e,(hl) \ ld d,(hl) \ push de". It will take 7/8 as many cycles.

    • @ThereOughtaBe
      @ThereOughtaBe  2 года назад +2

      Oh, of course, nice! I am rearranging bytes in the Python script anyway, so I can fix the order there at no cost. Thanks 👍

    • @ThereOughtaBe
      @ThereOughtaBe  2 года назад

      Sorry, I have to come back with a question. I thought that 7/8 cycles comes from push taking only three cycles, but I just found that it takes up 4 cycles and I end up with 8 cycles after all. Am I overlooking something? When I first read that suggestion I immediately came to the conclusion that it's 7 cycles, but I am wondering now if I just misremembered how fast push is.

    • @Dwedit
      @Dwedit 2 года назад

      Oh crap, I was wrong. Was looking at timings for "POP" instead of "PUSH". I feel pretty bad about making a stupid mistake like that.
      But at least it does allow four bytes to be queued into two register pairs before hblank period starts, so two stack pushes can happen without reading data first.
      I guess the next step would be to have the IO Read register take up a larger address range to make a popslide work.
      But if that's not possible, maybe do a few reads into a small buffer during render time so you can popslide a few bytes out to VRAM.

    if I may make a suggestion: maybe set something to equate the local brightest and darkest value on the frame rendered to absolute brightest and absolute darkness capable on the gameboy to enhance the contrast, since you’re going monochromatic? -there may be a setting directly in GTA for colorblind players that could help. To be honest, this video is way over my head so I skimmed it. Cool project to take on! Great work!

    • @ThereOughtaBe
      @ThereOughtaBe  Год назад

      Thanks!
      The contrast of the source material is not the issue, though. If you pause the video in the opening scene and look closely at the individual pixels, you will notice that there are four different shades of green present in almost every scene. That's all the shades of green that the Game Boy has to offer. The brightest one is just pretty far from white (even significantly darker than when the screen is turned off) and the darkest color is very far from black.
      These old LCD screens have always been pretty bad, but two things make it even worse here (three, if you count the dust):
      1. I made a point that this Game Boy from my childhood is unmodified, which makes the screen quite old - and they fade a bit with age.
      2. These screens are very slow to update. With these fast moving images the pixels have to quickly switch between target states (especially if you think of them on a pixel level with dithering applied) and often do not fully reach their target intensity.
