What an interesting concept. It really makes sense for the virus to have a gestation period. Making the initial side effects of a bite extremely positive means that the hosts spread it themselves until it the more carnal nature of the virus kicks in. I would love to see more movies build on this idea.

This is actually very interesting. It's not often a zombie movie introduces a new concept that can work in the real world. If a virus is capable of animatinga dead body, why not have some initial regenerative properties? In fact, from an evolutionary perspective, a virus is more likely to spread if it can survive long enough to spread. And I can totally see someone and misinterpreting the initial results as the only consequence and then acting without proper controlled testing. This just makes so much sense as a movie plot I'm surprised no one has done it before. I wouldn't be surprised though to see that it is concept copied in the west though.
I don't remember the exact match right now but in the movie adaptation of the book "I am legend" the virus that was a gene treatment for some illness mutated into basically a zombie virus. It wasn't exactly a zombie virus, but it made people physically stronger and helped them survive at the cost of their mind and increased aggressiveness. Actually the theme of using not fully tested but highly advanced treatment (of viral or nanobot origins) is moderately expanded upon in different media. - Ofc the trope of such treatment escaping because of some petty criminals or outstanding incompetence of the lab workers is even more popular. I guess people like that "butterfly effect" stuff.
@@ImperativeGames There's a difference between a virus that makes an individual more fit and a virus that finds a way to make the hosts want infection. It's a fine line. In the case of "I am Legend" it may have made individuals more in a physical sense, but the infection spread through violence which resulted in the breakdown of civilization. In practice this was actually harmful to the human species because far fewer individuals could be supported in the absence of modern agriculture which required intelligence over violence. In the case of this movie, the interesting twist is that a benefit was provided to the individual which the individual would want. In real-world context, the closest example would be the bacteriophage. These are specialized viruses which Target specific bacteria and are otherwise safe for the individual. Given that antibiotic resistance is projected to complete within the next 30 Years we will either need to find new antibiotics or implement phages or a combination of the both before then. If we don't it will be the end of modern medicine. There is tremendous pressure to see success here. Now, imagine if a phage was genetically modified to eliminate a large variety of bacteria as a new general purpose antibiotic? Everyone would want it. And as a living organism you would presumably be kept safe from all kinds of horrible diseases. Unfortunately, this would actually be bad because you require beneficial bacteria to survive. Your immune system uses it as does your digestive system. So a nightmare scenario could be that this general purpose antibiotic started out set to ignore the beneficial bacteria but mutates to eradicate it instead. Of course, historically, there are many beneficial viral agents. The most famous being the ones that led to human existence. Take, for example, the defining trait of all mammals: The placenta. This occurred when the common ancestor of mammals and reptiles became infected with a retrovirus during fetal development. This provided an advantage to the individual which ensured that it survived to reproduce passing on that trait. Through epigenetics the individuals learned how to control the expression of the viral genetic material which is why humans even exist as a species. In this case the virus provided something extremely useful which the organism exploited. Of course that kind of example doesn't work here because that only spreads through inheritance.
I am late to the conversation but there is a new kdrama series called Happiness that explore this concept. Could be something you are looking for in terms of the regenerative properties given to an infected.
There's a movie with Ethan Hawk where vampires biting a human who was a cured vampire, cures them as well. It's basically the same concept, but this one is more comedic.
