Lady, you are full of it! You sitting there talking crap about immigrants walking for 3 months in the jungle in search of a better life. AMA Tic And only have other American Ms to fear. And a Lot of these seniors are poor because of poor choices. I am a first generation immigrant, & a millionaire. So yeah, some of y’all are just Waiting for handouts
I am not "talking crap" about immigrants. With the exception of those brought to this country against their will and indigenous people everyone else is an immigrant. What I am doing is speaking the truth. Millions of peoole come to this country legally. I know of a family where the father waited ten years to legally immigrate here to join his wife. Why should others jump the line in front of someone like that. If you want to talk about handouts that certainly seems to qualify, someone wanting to be allowed to break the law to jump ahead of folks waiting years to enter this country. Funny how people are so blind to their own hypocrisy. I stand on what I said, a government's first obligation is to their own citizen's just like a parent's responsibility is first to their own children. It is a poor baker whose own children go begging bread while others are fed. It is fine and well to help whoever we can, but after we have housed our own children, elderly, veterans.
I am not a Millionaire I am a Teacher but I agree with you about the choices. I beg my kids to care about their education and teach them that you will be on food stamps and welfare and on social security and they don’t care so I let them know that they are choosing handouts and poverty. You are sooo right.😢
@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 It would be nice if all our tax money we paid out over the 50+ years was spent on our own people who have been paying taxes instead of them having to choose between rent, food, or meds. Instead, we send money to other countries that sometimes use that money against us or against another country. Our government most assuredly should be taking care of our own. Not eveyone makes bad choices, and sometimes life happens. We get sick, and we become disabled way too soon. Sometimes life just happens, no matter what other plans we make. I agree with you.
If you don't like what she saying for her truth get off her page, no one gives a damn that you a millionaire I get sick of you people, getting grants lying about how you came up in AmeriKKKa. If you a millionaire why you even had time to listen to her story.
Many people confuse "Medicare" with Medicaid. Medicare Parts A and B was paid for by the person through income witholding premiums So for someone to receive Medicare , it depends on if they paid into Medicare through their employment, and if they *are* eligible, which sections they opt-in to; A, B, C, and D each have their own requirements. A and B are free, already paid for, but C and D require additional insurance coverage. *All* indigent/ very low income senior *citizens* can apply for and receive Medicaid, which is an entirely different health care program. In many states ,like California, Medicaid ( it's called Medi-Cal here) will pay the insurance premiums for Medicare parts C and D through Partnership Health Plan. Many, if not most, states have some version of this arrangement.

I'm so glad I went to nursing school after my 3 daughters were out of high school. I worked 60 hours per week on a hospital floor to boost my retirement income. I paid off ALL debt except my home which has a low payment. I drive a 2003 car that I paid off in 2005. My utilities average $250 per month. Otherwise I would be in serious trouble! I'm not rich, drive an old car, live in a small modest home and live simple...but I don't fret over bills! Thank you GOD for giving me foresight!!!
@lindawhite5006 Me too! I ignored the bragging of friends about expensive trips, cars and homes. I live by myself by choice. Modest home and also drive an older model car, which is reliable. I've always believed in a budget. I sleep great at night! I, too, am a nurse.
I recently met a 65-year-old woman whose husband passed away recently. She's without relatives and friends and is now stuck with a $2500/rent/utiility bills every month. I told her that I would try to find out how she can get into a low-income senior home. It's so sad. She said she cries every night. That's just hard.
This is sad. But we have to teach the younger generation to think about when they are older. Get life insurance when you are young or younger. That is so key. Not sure if this couple had life insurance. You have to plan. You can't just go through life without a plan for aging.
Im a 72 year old widow and still working cleaning in a hospital. I dont mind my job but due to arthritis and copd, it's much harder every day to do my job. I'm a single (no kids) senior lady. Living on SS and uninsured. I will not allow myself to be a burden to my other family members if/when illness strikes. I'd rather die with them still loving me rather than having them hate me for burdening them with my medical care.

Many senior women are only receiving UNDER $1000. per month. A pharmacist told me that weekly there are senior’s that regularly refuse the lifesaving medication because it’s a choice between food, or utilities or their medication……
The sad reality. And there are young people having babies and getting govt assistance for housing, while many seniors struggle. You can can prevent getting pregnant if can't afford to be. You cannot prevent getting old and frail!
On the other hand, there are a lot of seniors whose pride won't let them apply for SNAP or other programs that could help them. Social security income is based on the amount of money that the individual contributed to their trust fund. People with higher incomes during their working life paid in more and as a result their checks are more. If social security beneficiaries are low income and medically needy their Medicare may be paid for by the state and they may get extra help with the costs of medications. They may get subsidized housing food stamps and vendored utilities.

Great conversation and a sad state of affairs for so many of our seniors. I watch a few young van life channels who think freedom is to not work a regular job so they can be free. I worry that their using their prime earning years just getting by and when they reach retirement age, they could be really struggling. Other channels I watch promote the idea people should retire as soon as they can without taking into account their financial situation which is really a personal situation and not everyone can retire early. I used my last years before retirement building my nest egg. My wife finally retired at 70 and has a pension, I have my 401k I converted to an IRA when I retired. Neither of us made a lot of money when we were working but we saved and invested, lived below our means and now are comfortable in retirement. I still work part time for fun because I like to work, it keeps me social with other people. Take care!
Well said. The time to prepare for retirement is when you're young and still able to work. Establish a rainy day savings account. Check off all the boxes. Financially, are your savings sufficient to cover any emergencies. It is said that your retirement years can far exceed your working years. How is your health? Are there any issues that need to be dealt with, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. The list goes on and on. This is a great topic with no easy solution.

I just turned 51, and I spent 3 months this summer with my mom and stepfather. I saw firsthand what being an elder is like, with a tight budget, medication costs and physical limitations. My parents are very healthy, but I saw my stepdad have a mild heart attack this summer and I saw my mother have many, many mind lapses, plus her physical limitations are starting to come out more in her 70s. Makes me so sad, and I want to move to their state to be close to them. Mom doesn't want me to give up my life for them. But I am 51, I have lived through so much and I have had my fun. I got to do so much in my youth, and I feel like more fun experiences will be in my future, but it is not my priority. After a long life of working very physical jobs, hard labor and blue-collar jobs, my rotator cuff tore this summer while visiting my parents. And I now live with extreme pain in my right arm. Thank you for championing the needs of seniors. It's shameful what we allow seniors to endure in this country. Other countries have much better systems for taking care of their elders.

Do other countries have better systems for seniors? Yes, in some cases: Many developed countries have robust systems for elder care, often including universal healthcare, subsidized housing, and pensions that ensure a stable standard of living for seniors. Examples include: Nordic countries (e.g., Sweden, Norway, Denmark): These countries have comprehensive welfare systems, providing free or affordable healthcare and generous pensions. Japan: With one of the world's highest aging populations, Japan offers long-term care insurance (LTCI) and extensive elder support programs. Germany: Provides mandatory long-term care insurance and subsidizes elder care services, including at-home care. No, not universally: In less affluent nations, resources for elder care may be limited. For instance: In some developing countries, seniors rely heavily on family support rather than government systems. Access to healthcare, housing, or pensions may be insufficient or non-existent.
@@LotusHeart777 Do people in these countries pay higher taxes? Generally, yes: Countries with extensive elder care programs often fund these systems through higher taxes, particularly in Europe and Scandinavia. For example: Sweden: Known for high taxes (e.g., income tax rates up to ~57%) to support universal welfare programs. Germany: Citizens contribute to healthcare, long-term care insurance, and pensions through taxes and mandatory deductions. However: Taxes also cover services like healthcare and education, reducing out-of-pocket expenses for citizens. This trade-off is often seen as beneficial in these societies.

I loved listening to your video the things you said about everything is so true..after working 60 years and 2 jobs most of those yrs..i am now fully retired and lonely . stutter when i do speak to people due to being alone for weeks without converation...this is very embarrassing. So. Guess what.....i am now getting a puppy at my age of 74. Now i will have someone to talk to😅
I am a 46 y/o disabled veteran. I am alone during the day while my husband is working. At least I have 2 small dogs to keep me company. I talk to them all day long! Enjoy your time with your puppy!
You are so kind to do videos like this to help, inform and encourage others. I'm 66 and have been a widow for 15 years. Was only able to get widow benefits starting at age 60. No life insurance and tons of medical debt left to deal with. One way or another God has always provided for me. This year my rent went up $200 a month which I had never had an increase over $50. That has been tough! But I'm still hanging in there.
Nice video. I see the comment section has quite a few people that never learned about empathy or compassion. That is exactly what is wrong with this country.
Thank you for another well done video with valuable information. I am aware that a middle aged or older person who finds themselves without a job these days has a real problem. You are correct that most employers do not want to hire older people. This is especially true for women, regardless of their qualifications.
Yep. My SS is less than $500/month. We lost all our investments and even our Life insurance during the 2008-09 crash. Etc., etc. Our best laid plans just backfired on us and it is what it is.
So many people have never recovered from the financial crash of 2008. EAs I noted to another person, I believe co living/shared loving spaces are going to be a necessity for many in order to simply survive!
Yeah, that was when I lost my house, which I bought as an investment for my future. Well, THAT didn't work out for anyone but the rich! It's no wonder so many people are bitter now. They did everything right and in the end got screwed.
Your value of your investments went down in 2008 and nine, but you still had that stock if you didn’t sell it even though the price wasn’t high if you would’ve held onto it it would’ve increased overtime so I’m not sure what you’re talking about or even referring toyou should’ve just left it alone
I'm 68 yrs old. Live solo. In a nice size home. And can afford to live there comfortably on my above average SS. I would gladly share my home with other seniors if they knew how to RESPECT other people and property. Some children doesn't even let a parent live with them because they dont understand Grace. People have to change their thinking on what's needed to survive these times. Humble yourselves. We don't want to drag ourselves to the grave.
Perhaps if you become involved at the senior center or with some senior groups, possibly at church, you will meet a possible candidate to share your home with.
@@Brigitte724 No good deed goes unpunished. It's one thing to give a person a few hundred dollars to help them out, but another to let them into your home. Once they are a tenant then the government is involved and you could have a hard time getting them out if they're a problem.
You might be able to talk to the pastor of a few churches. They may know a sweet lady who's very kind, pleasant, easy to get along with, & dependable who would be a good roommate?
I'm the same way. I live in a shed with electricity though no water, no cooking facilities. I pay the mortgage $338.00/mo. RTO NATIONAL. My daughter moved me here from TX due to severe cardiac and pulmonary issues. Now my daughter refuses me access to her trailer for the bathroom and washer. APS is involved but doesn't do anything. I've no transport to grocery stores or medical apps. She basically told me to leave. My only option will be a Walmart Shopping cart with my dog and a bag of dirty clothes. Every place I call has waiting lists. The terrible part, my daughter works as a D&A therapist. It's like she's Jekyl&Hyde. It all started when my surgery for a broken hand was cancelled by the surgeon. She became nasty in the car, twisted and grabbed my already fx. hand. Now my sweet Mocha and I will be looking for a culvert or bushes somewhere.
Worked from the time I was 16 until I was 62 when I had to retire due to health issues. If I wasn't able to live in subsidized housing I wouldn't make it. Even with all that experience I was not able to get a job. I volunteer at local elementary school as a classroom aide and they love me, but not enough to hire me!
Another guy turned me onto your channel ( “ Got out “ , I think) he said you put out a good vibe, and you do ! It’s just heartbreaking how many of our seniors live under extremely stressful situations. I’m retired and one of the fortunate ones. I don’t have a solution, but let’s start by being kind to one another. ❤
Welcome to Glow. Come join us on our weekly LIVES every Saturday at 3pm pst Kindness is certainly a good starting point. Sounds like you made some good decisions early on regarding retirement.
I’m so glad you are addressing this. I just started my Social Security. I’m lucky because my ex husband made more than me. So I get $2,167.00 otherwise I’d get 1,300 or 1,400 per month if it were based on my earnings. I’m also blessed because I get the $690 pension from my ex husband. So far I can still work. I may only get $1,500 take home. Now, I’m still in my stick and brick. The mortgage and rent alone is close to $1,600. Then the bills. This is why I’ll turn to Van life.
Thank you for your videos, you are helping a lot of seniors.I am healthy by God's grace, and I am still working 12hrs/ day since 2012. I am a widow and well past retirement. I am a Caregiver Supporter on my RUclips Channel. Keep on keeping on. I just subscribed.❤
Many people don't mention or even acknowledge those who had become severely disabled at a younger age through no fault of their own... Their parents have passed away, they have never had children, ( many are unable to) may be divorced, or single, their siblings are occupied with their own lives, etc. And these people may be completely fine mentally, but are mostly homebound and struggling financially - there are many conditions that are seriously disabling... Spinal chord conditions, cancer, kidney, heart, lung, and liver disease, etc. Also chronic pain- SSI and SSDI needs to be brought up to a livable wage - but politicians aren't talking about this... It's sad!
I would add vision loss too. I developed an eye disorder, was lucky to be able to stop work while hubs kept at it...but I don't qualify for disability even tho I can no longer drive. If something happens to my husband, I'll be literally stranded.
Carol, you are truly a balm to my soul. You've spoken on Everything I've been thinking recently. Last weekend I joined The Goodwill Community Center, advise Every senior to do so! This helps with Socialization- Aerobic Exercise, Line Dancing, playing cards, Walking outdoors too, Bingo, a Pool table, Bible Study, etc, YOUR CHOICE, you Even get One full meal a day 5 days a week, for $5.00/ mo.! ..You just have to get there! To those who have a little more income, there is traveling with other seniors that takes care of hotel accomodations, 2 or 3 meals a day, excursions that you have a year to save and pay for! This is one of the Best things that have happened to me at 73. May I also suggest taking time out for yourself by joining a Center/ Gym for Water Aerobics, Strength Training, Physical Exercise! Check and see if your health insurance will pay the cost. Find one that does, and you'll be glad you did. God Bless! ♥️🙏
Great info. Thank you. I would love for you to come on one of my GLOW LIVE broadcasts on Saturdays at 3pm pst to share how these changes have improved your quality of life. So happy for you😊
You are correct about the social security check. My mom is a part of this statistics. It's said. I'm grateful for my sister, my daughter and niece who steps in and fills in the gap. My heart goes out to seniors who do not have this support. This is so sad! You are correct about the physical limitations. I'm in my 50's and you are correct about the limitations. I have experienced age discrimination. Older workers are more reliable and understand work ethics.
Young people should watch this, live within your means and save for retirement. SS was never meant to be a persons sole income in retirement "We can never insure one hundred percent of the population against one hundred percent of the hazards and vicissitudes of life, but we have tried to frame a law which will give some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age."-- President Roosevelt upon signing Social Security Act
During my working years, wages were flat, thanks to Reagan and the Republicans. I made enough to pay the bills but not enough to save for retirement. And please don't tell "Then get a better job!" If I could have, I would have.
@@debbieframpton3857 I can't afford to rent anything anywhere in this country. Doesn't that tell you things are extremely out of whack? Even a studio apt now costs $1200+. A studio! No bedroom! There is just something so wrong with that when only a handful of years ago, I was renting a very nice two-bedroom for $600/month.
as a senior i have free or very inexpensive ways of being social that any senior can do.. i joined for free the towns senior center, a free walk in our beautiful city park, i do exercises at home..just easy ones..i meet at a local coffee shop to visit..it cost no morevthan 2.00 for a senior coffee with free refill..i take full advantage of ANY senior discount available...BINGO at the center. i volunteer at the local retirement home just to help the disabled seniors..some just like to chat, be read to, just sit with them outside....my point is that it's not all gloom and doom to be a senior..i live comfortably on my 1300.00 a month... 500.00 rent 200.00 groceries 65.00 car insurance 120.00 phone/wifi 80.00 fuel for car 100.00 electric 50.00 water 30.00 for meds= 1145.00 a month...i might spend another 30.00 on bingo/coffee shop per month...I'm just extremely strict on my budget and do not waver from it.
Lots of seniors in poverty in Canada too. A one bedroom apartment is more than my income. A room is 2/3 my income. I am lucky I have a studio apartment and my landlords have not put rent up for years. Would love a bedroom but at least can afford my place.
Hardly the same thing, Canadians have health care and dental care so those are taken care of. Many in the US can't get either. Agreed, rents are high but over 75% of seniors in Canada own their homes. Look at StatsCan.
Just "found" you today, you are very calming to listen to. I am 67 & was put on disability several years ago. Moved to a rural area by a large lake in Texas. Was not a great area 5 years ago,(and there still many challenges) but was affordable, & I could see the potential. Very grateful. God has a plan for all of us. I wanted to travel the world when I retired...His plans are very different, & I try to focus on what He has provided for me...give it all to God & Jesus Christ! Being in this world, not of this world will change your life, no matter how much time we have left here. Thank-you, I look foward to watching your videos again.🎉
Thank you so much for this video. I would like to share my experience which is not as you are describing, but I know what you're describing is the reality for many. First, let me say that I would encourage everyone is tired as I know we all are of working when you get to a certain age, to continue to work if you can. I am 64 years old and will be 65 next spring. I am blessed to still be working and make a very nice salary. I have never been married and have no children. I virtually have no savings either. I did at one time about 20 years ago, but that was all eaten up when I got very ill and had to stop working for about 2 years. So all of that savings, which was pretty substantial, were used for not only medical bills but also just day to day living and expenses. I've never been able to recover from that time. But it was a long time ago that I realized that I i would never be able to retire once. That's once nice savings that I had was eaten up so here I am almost sixty five years old and have lupus which I was diagnosed with in 2001. I was very ill for the first few years until they got it under control. I have organ involvement, meaning my kidneys, my lungs, my skin in 2016, it was diagnosed that I have brain involvement. In other words central nervous system. That means at any time I am at risk for a stroke or seizures, and I have very poor short term memory. When I tell you, I am very blessed to still be able to work minute! I am alone, i've never been married.I live alone and I have no children, so I am responsible for myself. My future has always been a concern, especially once I got my diagnosis and the realization that I will never be able to retire. I do make a very decent salary. I don't want to have to work this job forever. Even though I will have to work to some capacity until my dying breath, unless I find second stream of income that is passive in that brings in a good income for me. But I have realized recently that if I continue to work until age sixty seven that will be considered full retirement for me and I can start try my social security and because that will be full retirement age, I can continue to work and there will be no cap on them out of money that I can make. So my plan is to do that, but to get different job. That doesn't pay is high, but that is still a nice supplement to my social security. I will be eligible to make the maximum amount for my social security. So that coupled with another thirty to forty thousand dollars a year should make me okay, i'm hopi. So that is my plan as long as God says thee same I and I can stick it out for another 2 1/2 years. I do work remotely which I started doing June of this year and that has been a big help for me because of my illness period at this point I have to be remote. I cannot work a job that requires me to be in the office every day. So I am so grateful that I have this opportunity and I have no concerns whatsoever of my boss stating that I I can know why I work from home because I took this job with the understanding that I need to be remote. And because of the type of job, it is don't have any concern about that. Again very blessed. For me, keeping my mind. Active has been very important because of my brain involvement. I do lots of puzzles and crossword puzles and word search puzzles, and I, to other activities that keep my brain active, not to mention that my job itself requires me to really, truly actively, use my brain. I read complex documents all day long.Which not only do I enjoy it, but i believe it helps keep the potential negative effects of my brain issues at bay. I don't think I mention this, but part of my brain issues are that I have a brain that is literally covered with brain lesions with lupus, brain lesions, and my doctors are truly amazed at how well i'm doing, and then I am able to continue to work full time. It isn't easy and I struggle most days, but I am all the more grateful that i'm able to work from home. I guess I just wanted to share this and just till let people know that if you are in a situation where you can continue to work, I would advise doing so. Do I wish I could just stop working altogether? of course, I do, because I just, I don't always feel well so this is my next best option. And in the meantime, my hunt for passive income stream that does not require some large amount of upfront investment, if any, continues.
This is a depressing but true video. I like thousands of seniors living this life everyday. I’m grateful and thankful for all that do have, a lot of this is easier said than done cause I’m in some of these same situations. Peace and blessings 💙
Im 66 I was Diagnosed with Multiple Myolyma I was one year from retirement and I had acute renal failure well after one year I'm healing and on my wellness journey no chemo treatments im taking control my daughter wanted me to relocate and live with her I agreed it saves me money senior living is increasing in I have been on the wait list for apartment for 2yrs
I'm 68 year old multiply disabled woman who left homelessness after 30 years, mostly outdoors. It wasn't until I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure that I was given housing
I was working and became disabled and could no longer work. I retired early and this really put me in a financial deficit . I inherited my house from my parents and now I am struggling trying to keep the house up. Young people please try to buy insurance that will cover or give you a income to live on if you become disabled and can no longer work. I spent a lot of my savings just to live on until I could get social security disability. Protect yourself and look into purchasing insurance that could provide you with a income, until you are able to get on social security.
Thank you for sharing this , it’s a terrible tragedy ! I am seeing it all around me also and am trying to prepare for that season as well as help seniors around me when I can . Most of all pray , pray for them and pray for solutions. 😢🙏
Thank you for doing videos about this. My SS check is very low, less that $800. I get extra help from SSI & NY state and I live in subsidized housing for seniors. So even though I am alone with my pet rabbit I have plenty of socialization in my building. My biggest problem is transportation if I have to go somewhere not close by. I cannot walk without my walker and I was using a mobility chair to go to appointments and stores but it quit working and I can't afford to have someone come here to fix it. So it sits in my bathroom taking up space. The other problem I have had is the elevator in our building being out of service. When that happens I cannot use the stairs so I am stuck in here and can't leave. I think it is important to find sources of what you need and then try to get the help you need. I never pictured myself living this life when I got older but here I am.
This is why I keep up with all of the latest technology, you can work from home. I have never experienced age discrimination at all. Not saying that it doesn’t exist. However, people have to educate themselves on investing and saving while working. I’m 68 and get a very good Social Security check. I have no health issues because I learned about juicing fruits and veggies and eating healthy. I’m not on any medications. Thank God. I got a job at 50 and a better job at 59 and retired at 68 and about to get a work from home job in January 2025. I wrote a book in 2020 and it continues to sell. I’m too creative and busy to become the senior citizen you’re talking about. I believe all you are saying but, come on change your thoughts and create a better quality of life.
Everything being mentioned 100 % truth. I work for a Senior Non Profit. Seniors are outliving their money. People literally die of loneliness, attributes to depression which contributed to lack of desire to live, eat do anything. We have been taught to go to school, go to college, get a job at a company you can work for 40 years or more retire with a nice pension. That is outdated system and we are not taught financial literacy. Not taught how to invest, make money grow compound or create more than one income stream. We have been taught to be worker bees. I speak with seniors who have to decide between paying the rent or buying food. For seniors receiving the Calfresh food program are getting a ridiculous amount like $26 a month. That's a joke.
Have you told them about the program where if you go to a Mothers store you spend 20 dollars in produce you get 20 re-added to your card up to 60 dollars? So even if they only get 26 they can still get 80 dollars in produce.
Unfortunately, for most of us when young we feel like retirement is so so far away, I know I did, funny thing is I feel I'm that same vibrant soul I was at 35-40, but society has a way of reminding me that I'm not 😕
I’m 78 and when I was young I didn’t save for this stage of life. I’m grateful beyond words that I’m not living in poverty. But for grace. But my life isn’t over things can change without notice.
Great video. I'm in my 70's and work P/T just to stay active. Oh and to keep money in my bank account! I look back at my mom and grandma and how they survived when their husbands passed away. And all levels of gov't keep taxing the daylights out of our savings!
Being a senior all expenditures have to be intentional..There's no room for unexpected spending..Thanks for all that you do for the senior community..👍👍🫶
Carol, this video was needed on so many levels! I'm so glad you are discussing these topics relative to Seniors. About Age Discrimination against Seniors. Yes it is very real and far more commonplace than people want to acknowledge. Sadly the "truth" isn't as much about actual Age Discrimination relating to Seniors as it is about Employers wanting Employees who are Malleable, Moldable and willing to become mirror images of their Middle and Upper Management. Translation: an Employee with a level of willingness to be "A-MORAL" or COMPLICIT at best (allegedly). Much "goes down" in today's workforce environments and "implied consent" for questionable actions and behaviors are conditions that most Seniors simply choose to have no part in. They have lived their lives on the Up and Up and won't take chances with questionable or illegal workforce issues. I've personally quit careers with very good wages because I was unyielding about the "line crossing" that Management wanted (and expected) while they themselves were SHIELDED by Plausible Denials of any knowledge of questionable or illegal actions in their workforce. Of course Seniors are not willingly to put themselves in Management's Hand as a Fungible Asset or as a convenient Scapegoat... and that's 💯 a major issue why Seniors who are highly qualified do not get hired (allegedly, of course)... but it's a subject most people won't discuss or even acknowledge as having any impact on their current employment positions or their future employment possibilities. Carol, clearly you touched on the topic of Age Discrimination against Seniors. "What, When, Why and How" it is so commonplace needs to be addressed as part of the Age Discrimination discussion too.
You make a lot of good points. So often young people are willing to engage in questionable practices at work in an effort to further their careers not realizing they will be hung out to dry when it hits the fan by management claiming no knowledge of their actions and often being sophisticated enough to leave no paper trail.
I bumped into your video this morning. You are articulate and quite factual in what you just shared! I am impressed with you and want to encourage you with your channel. Thank You for putting these Facts out there. I am 73 and see poverty surrounding me everyday. Best Wishes sent your way, and be well.
Thank you for this video and being an advocate for those seniors who are struggling. I am 70, retired and I guess I was always taught that social security was meant to supplement your savings. I could never survive on my social security alone. I know I am very fortunate to have savings and a pension. Please keep up your important work. I would mention that I have seen where some seniors live together in order to combine resources. One RUclipsr talked about turning her master suite into her apartment and rented out the rest of her home to make additional income. Just trying to think outside the box. Appreciate your efforts.
FDR’s quote about the purpose of Social Security Accurate representation: President Franklin D. Roosevelt did articulate the purpose of Social Security as providing a measure of protection, not comprehensive coverage. His administration envisioned SS as a partial solution to poverty in old age, combined with personal responsibility and other supports.
I spend 6 months traveling and going to Arizona and the other six months living with my brother in Minnesota. By the time I leave Minnesota we are pretty tired of each other and I was even thinking I no longer want to do this. But, after watching your video, I realize how very lucky I am. I can't save as much as I would like to, but I do save some each month. Also, Minnesota has Blue Cross Blue Shield which I pay nothing for and our state has a special fund for people like me and they pay any extra for healthcare which isn't covered. So I will continue to stay with my brother spring through fall even though we sometimes get on each other's nerves.
When SS was started it was supposed to a supplement to what people had saved for their retirement. People started trying to live on SS instead of saving. As times changed we got where we had difficulty saving. I believe more should be done for seniors in this day & time. There are so many more taxes & expenses now! ❤
The other factor with the early years of social security is that most workers (mostly men) worked for the same company for most of their working life, and had a decent pension by retirement age. Divorce was uncommon, so their wives were generally ok, as well. Changes in employment practices, decreasing union membership, divorce, and stagnant minimum wage have all played into the current plight for seniors, causing many to have to rely on Soc Sec alone.
@@libbygardner3021healthcare costs have soared, it’s even difficult for those who have pensions and stock portfolios. Healthcare costs are EATING THEM ALIVE. 😢
My Social Security is $1049.00 monthly. Fortunately (or unfortunately), I own this house. It's falling apart. I need electrical work, plumbing work and structual work done on it. And worst of all, my roof is practically gone. I have huge holes in it and my ceiling is falling in! I don't know what to do, I need a roof so badly! And I keep getting from people that are supposed to help us, that they've spent all their money, etc, I really don't know what is to become of me. I couldn't work if iti was to save my life. I'm on a cane/walker. I have two bad knees, bad hips, a horrilbe back. I can't do that, no way could I work. Just wanted to say that I WISH I drew $12xx monthly. That little bit extra would sure help me. Good luck to all.
I am so sorry to hear about your situation. Have you perhaps reached put to Habitat for Humanity. Also, there are a number of churches that have a week each year where they go out and do repairs on homes for free. I suggest calling every church in your city if need ne and ask if they have such a program. Lastly, there was a program when I was in a different area of this state thru the gas and electric company that came out and did some weather stripping type upgrades for free. Just be very careful that you don't sign anything without having someone trustworthy review it to make sure you aren't signing up for a costly repair.
Thank you so much! I have called Habitat for Humanity but nothing there. I haven't called any churches. I figured that was a no go since I don't go to church any where. But thank you and I'll keep trying to get at least a roof put on. You give such good advice, I subscribed to your channel and liked it also. Again, thank you so much!
As a widowed senior citizen, I totally agree with what you are saying. I fear the day when I may not be able to care for myself and what will happen to me then.
Thank you for another informative video. Being a senior female in America makes me realize we still have a long way to go towards equality. I am set because I had more male oriented gifts and talents so I was paid well, and was able to contribute to our future retirement. Unfortunately most women of our generation are paying the price for being "stay at home mom's, household laborers and general caregivers ". The increases in any system are multiplying at a % of an already marginal beginning income, for those on the lower end of the benefits. To truly help, benefits would have to increase at a higher % for the lower benefit levels, and politicians are not going to do that because of the perceived backlash that they would get. It is best for anyone who is marginal to start early, finding resources and getting on the waiting list, before you are in dire need. I will continue to pray for the poor, elderly, and disadvantaged in America. I will also get out and vote. Thank you again for taking the time to create this video.
Hi sis I'm so glad that I found your channel, I've found this to be very interesting and informative Thank You for sharing your knowledge.. I live on less than a thousand dollars per month and a lot of people don't want to rent to anyone on a fixed income you have to make 3 times the rent.
So sorry for all having to deal with this. We have older people living in poverty in my country too, but they never have to choose from medication and eating. Healthcare is free. 💙
So glad someone who really knows what it's like and knows what she's talking about. 99 percent of the so called help people tell you just go out . Just go meet friends , socialize. No money. Can't do that. But so many tell you that when they are sitting in their fancy cars and nice houses. I never see a broke person giving advice.. Thank you for telling the real story. 😊
It should be common sense that when you have no discretionary income you won't be doing any socializing. But as the saying goes commons sense ain't so common, especially when coupled with a lack of compassion. 😊
Please do a video for those nearing senior years what to prepare for not to be stuck. Thanks for this realistic video. I am not in your country but living in low income apartment with disrespectful neighbours is another challenge. I got out to a litte house but now I basically have nothing left and are doing the maths how to get a little extra money aside from them paying my rent. At least our medical stuff is paid. I however do natural treatment and don't dependend on prescription meds from doctor. God bless you all.
Lady, you are full of it! You sitting there talking crap about immigrants walking for 3 months in the jungle in search of a better life. AMA
Tic
And only have other American
Ms to fear. And a
Lot of these seniors are poor because of poor choices. I am a first generation immigrant, & a millionaire. So yeah, some of y’all are just
Waiting for handouts
Wow you’re pathetic.
Medicare for seniors should be free.

This is sad. But we have to teach the younger generation to think about when they are older. Get life insurance when you are young or younger. That is so key. Not sure if this couple had life insurance. You have to plan. You can't just go through life without a plan for aging.

I have relative that only worked cash only jobs or 1099 jobs his reason he did not wanted to pay child support to his ex wife. Thank you for championing the needs of seniors. It's shameful what we allow seniors to endure in this country. Other countries have much better systems for taking care of their elders.
No, other countries do NOT have better systems for their seniors.
They absolutely do AND better situations for children, young families and the disabled. Every time it looks like we have a chance to have a better life, the conservatives go absolutely nuts screaming "SOCIALISM"!
They have blocked all the programs commonly enjoyed in Europe, Canada et al. God help us. 😢
Maybe but I think ppl in those countries pay higher taxes.
Do other countries have better systems for seniors?
Yes, in some cases: Many developed countries have robust systems for elder care, often including universal healthcare, subsidized housing, and pensions that ensure a stable standard of living for seniors. Examples include:
Nordic countries (e.g., Sweden, Norway, Denmark): These countries have comprehensive welfare systems, providing free or affordable healthcare and generous pensions.
For instance:
In some developing countries, seniors rely heavily on family support rather than government systems.
For example:
Sweden: Known for high taxes (e.g., income tax rates up to ~57%) to support universal welfare programs.
Germany: Citizens contribute to healthcare, long-term care insurance, and pensions through taxes and mandatory deductions.
However: Taxes also cover services like healthcare and education, reducing out-of-pocket expenses for citizens. This trade-off is often seen as beneficial in these societies.

My husband left me, long story, so now I work to keep a small rainy day fund to stay out of debt. It's hard at 72 when you have nobody to take care of you. I never thought I would end up like this. So far he's still paying the taxes on the house, but I worry what will happen if he changes his mind. I can't go to outings anymore because of trouble walking. Some days I wish I had stayed in NJ and never came to OH. I was by myself.
Can you go back to NJ?
Did you ex-husband isolate you from family and friends by moving you to another state? Some men have serious control issues. I’m writing from experience.
If you can replace your hips. I just have.

You're absolutely right 💯

Right they keep talking about no taxes for seniors but don't go in to detail what that means.. I know that some seniors if they make over a certain amount on their social security are taxed on part of it but it certainly doesn't fall in the poverty level that most of us get. Or does it mean if you are a senior and want to keep working that you are not taxed if you make over the limit? Anna In Ohio

The difference on what I would collect now at FRA and what I will collect at 70 is $500 a month. These past 3 years have been my highest earning years and have raised my social security immensely.
Hopefully you will live long enough to enjoy it

So. Guess what.....i am now getting a puppy at my age of 74. Now i will have someone to talk to😅

A puppy. that's thoughtless and heartless Why a puppy? There's senior dogs that won't outlive you who's owners have passed on.
It’s not helping
It is alarming to many seniors how much rent is going up. I do believe sharing housing is going to become a necessity for survival.
Nice video. I see the comment section has quite a few people that never learned about empathy or compassion. That is exactly what is wrong with this country.
Just look at the news with recent events ajd that pretty clearly shows where many are in this country regarding empathy or compassion.
Thank you for another well done video with valuable information. I am aware that a middle aged or older person who finds themselves without a job these days has a real problem. You are correct that most employers do not want to hire older people. This is especially true for women, regardless of their qualifications.
This kind of age discrimination has been going on too long. I really hope more people will speak up about it.
And if you survived 2008, 2020 finished you off.

People don't want to talk about age discrimination in the workplace but it is real. I am so glad for you that you have subsidized housing.
Another guy turned me onto your channel ( “ Got out “ , I think) he said you put out a good vibe, and you do !

God Bless! ♥️🙏

You are correct about the physical limitations.
I'm in my 50's and you are correct about the limitations.
I have experienced age discrimination. Older workers are more reliable and understand work ethics.
Young people should watch this, live within your means and save for retirement.
SS was never meant to be a persons sole income in retirement
"We can never insure one hundred percent of the population against one hundred percent of the hazards and vicissitudes of life, but we have tried to frame a law which will give some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age."--
President Roosevelt upon signing Social Security Act
That's what I was thinking.
Also live healthy, exercise
During my working years, wages were flat, thanks to Reagan and the Republicans. I made enough to pay the bills but not enough to save for retirement. And please don't tell "Then get a better job!" If I could have, I would have.
A income of Social Security only can be enough to live on depends on where you live and your bills

Sounds like rents are just as bad there as here.

Kudos for speaking out on behalf of us old in years.
Congratulations. It sounds like you have made some good choices that turned out well for you.
Unfortunately, for most of us when young we feel like retirement is so so far away, I know I did, funny thing is I feel I'm that same vibrant soul I was at 35-40, but society has a way of reminding me that I'm not 😕
So AGREE
I’m 78 and when I was young I didn’t save for this stage of life. I’m grateful beyond words that I’m not living in poverty. But for grace. But my life isn’t over things can change without notice.

Thank you for advocating. You are a blessing to many.
FDR’s quote about the purpose of Social Security
Accurate representation: President Franklin D.
Sure, then why are they including paid for pension savings in your asset calculation?
The other factor with the early years of social security is that most workers (mostly men) worked for the same company for most of their working life, and had a decent pension by retirement age. Divorce was uncommon, so their wives were generally ok, as well. Changes in employment practices, decreasing union membership, divorce, and stagnant minimum wage have all played into the current plight for seniors, causing many to have to rely on Soc Sec alone.
@@libbygardner3021healthcare costs have soared, it’s even difficult for those who have pensions and stock portfolios. Healthcare costs are EATING THEM ALIVE. 😢

Carole, again you have nailed it. I am “here”. 😢
🥰🥰🥰
As a widowed senior citizen, I totally agree with what you are saying. I fear the day when I may not be able to care for myself and what will happen to me then.
GOD BLESS AMERICA
Hello Carol, good video. It sure is sad being a senior. Something needs to be fixed.
Yes I agree

Love this video, glad to see good news finally reported.
Imagine how hard life was for folks before Medicare? I cannot imagine. God Bless Lyndon Baines Johnson!
I shudder to think!!! LBJ did many things to change things for the better that he doesn't get credit for.
He did food stamps. Roosevelt did social security.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support 🥰🥰🥰

Thanknyou for dipping into the talks that others are afraid to do. We really don’t take care of our on citizens but we do take care of some
So true!
Kamala will take care of NON citizens and criminals - free sex changes !! But people think that’s just great
So glad someone who really knows what it's like and knows what she's talking about.
Thank you for all that you do, your videos are very informative. It's cheaper to move abroad. I lived on the beach in Albania for $1150/month.

True with a sad situation my prayer is that we can all at least be able to maintain a joyful, peaceful, safe, affordable, and comfortable lifestyle❤

Same for me as a nurse, worked my last 22 years for the Catholic Church and I have a lifetime pension 100% funded by the Catholic Church ❤
I'm glad for you!

Thank you Carol for this video. It's very important. Hope you are having a good day and week
Thanks for the video, look forward to the others in the series.👍
thank you. i am living most of what you said, and you are 100% correct
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this video. It really helps as a senior to be understood.
