Which means all working class people have been short changed in wages, retirement…& now social security !! & yes this woman should have been better compensated in her divorce !!
I'm 74 now, been retired since the age of 62. I live completely alone and love every minute of it. If I had known what solitude would be like, I would have never married and just lived alone all my life. I don't understand why people get lonely since I'm NEVER lonely... or at least the condition that people explain as loneliness. I enjoy my own company, studying, playing an occasional classical piano concert, walking/hiking in the wilderness where I've lived for the past 10 years (trying to get away from society) and teaching online classes in survival skills. My days are crammed full of the most interesting things that make me happy to be unburdened by society.
It sounds like you are loving your life and actually enjoy being alone in nature or other settings. So many people are so afraid of being alone that as a result they remain in toxic situations just so they aren't alond.

One of my siblings is in a similar financial situation. I've suggested they think about sharing a home with someone. Love the idea of the roommate matching service.
I enjoyed this interview. I am 61, never married, childless. I live with a friend in the South. We both are from San Diego and became friends in school. We're like sisters. We are lucky, our landlord has never raised the rent, which is unheard of these days. Our rental home however, is older and has never been updated. We have simple lives but are still struggling despite a full-time job. One day at a time.

@seventhchild7270, Love your lifestyle, it almost mirrors mine: healthy, organic plant based way of eating, power walking for exercise, pray daily, study my Bible and maintain a good relationship with my loving creator. I have no debt at 80 yrs old - pay any credit cards in full each month, drive an 11 yr old Camry that I paid cash for in 2019, which will most likely last me until I take my flight from this earth. I take NO prescription meds, and treat everything Holistically. Have not had a cold or the flu in over 25 yrs! Although I'm married, I've got myself set up with several rentals that will help supplement my income should I lose my hubby. Life is about thinking ahead, as much as possible, to help one be able to maintain a decent life. I too, am blessed in so many ways, and am grateful to my creator for His love and the peace that He brings to me daily! Blessings to all of you, AND a special "Thank You" to Carol and her many interviews with neat people like Liz! It was enlightening for me as well😊 She made some very valid points particularly about not growing older alone and choosing a location to age in based on available emotional support.

I am only a few seconds in to this episode however, Every time I hear this woman hosting this show I can't help but think that her speaking is so edified and so eloquent that she should really have her own show on National Television. 👏🏻🏆🥇🙏🏻 I really admire a woman who uses proper English, speaks in a soft tone, does not MUMBLE and isn't RUSHED to communicate the subject matter. I always feel like she worked with me somewhere in California as I IMMEDIATELY feel so COMFORTED, ACCEPTED and LOVED. I can literally FEEL her warm embrace. Love your video!!!! I’m a seventy seven YO widow that lives alone on simple meek retirement. What saves me is when husband was still living we had a brick home built on forty acres. had grid tied solar giving us a 32 $ a month electric meter fee,no water bill, have a deep well,no sewer charge, have septic that goes to a lagoon . Even tho I have an efficient furnace,
It's wonderful she has that friend and she can stay in an attractive environment. More power to the two of them. Company and shared experiences at any age is worth gold.
I'm doing the same thing my friend owns her home it's very large and she turned the bottom floor / basement into an apartment. I decorated it beautifully and has an outside deck in So. CAL near wine country and she has rent control for me too and I'm 65 years old! Keep praying cuz God is good and here's your prayers ❤

I have natural long platinum hair also, almost 76. I share a small home with my First Daughter and her 2 adult sons. My husband passed away 2 & 1/2 decades ago. He was barely 51 when he passed away. I had a 4,000 Square Mediterranean home with huge pool and all the bells and whistles, my Daughters a Son-in-law, and my First Daughter's twins and my young teenage Daughter, her hubby lost his job; so I couldn't manage such a huge property. Over the following years, I downsized buying a Condo, sold that after 10 years, my younger Daughter moved out , sold it a year later, then bought another house, for my Divorced Son and myself. That lasted for a couple years, then I found myself renting apts. I had my Son moving back for awhile every now and then, and my youngest Daughter came back with her baby Son. Years later I had so many medical issues I decided to buy another house where we are now. We help each other out, the 2 young Men help out greatly, do their own laundry, they both work, one does the yard work. We are happy, the majority of the time. We have numerous pets.
I'm glad this has worked for her, but I haven't seen many doing this. There are numerous reasons why. Many families can't get along. Many after divorce haven't remarried and have developed a lifestyle of loving aloneness. I'm one of them. I relish it and don't feel a need for companionship at all. I have 3 inner circle friends that I prize and respect greatly. We are happy in our lifestyles. It definitely helps with rent to share expenses but there is HUD senior rentals that are very inexpensive. It's far cheaper than having a roommate and that's where I am. I love it. It's a clean, quiet, well maintained place. So I wldn't want to change a thing. People need different things.
For many as you say they treasure their solitude. But many older individuals are not just struggling financially but are also very lonely. I do believe there will be more and more of this kind of living in the future. In many areas there are long waiting lists for Hud housing. So, that is not a viable option. As more than 30 million folk hit 65 between now and 2030 resources are going to be stretched to their limit. It will be very interesting to see how people navigate that.
Ehat a pleasure to meet Lizzie. I am a Senior hoping to semi-retire in 2025. I also love the idea of a Senior Roommate matching service. Sounds Awesome. Like that former TV show, The Golden Girls.❤❤
It can certainly be helpful to share income but not necessarily essential, and definitely not in this video. . In this video I really wanted to demonstrate ways a person can stretch their Social Security checks by sharing housing and working part-time past typical retirement age of 65. Also wanted to point out the availability of free entertainment These were the points I was making which Lizzie highlighted when she shared that her rent was less than half of what it would otherwise be. Paying less than half their current rent would be of great benefit to many seniors. I also wanted to demonstrate how having a shared housing situation presented more benefits than financial if it was a good match as Lizzie and her housemate also enjoy doing some activities together and are a source or emotional and social supoort for each other.
I agree. I understand that some people won't want to share that info, but if they will it would be valuable. Even if not sharing income, hearing details about expenses would add some insight. Good story though.
I agree income support is huge. Not amount or source but knowing so and so is SS only versus a person still working, or relying on passive income are different worlds. each managing expenses experience that help different audiences.
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621Please keep financial info out of your interviews. It can be more dangerous now then ever to expose someone's finances along with their face and where they live (the area). Your viewers don't need to know these details. Let's keep everybody safe.
Lizzy is a smart lady in many ways. But like she said, you have to be careful to know how to pick your room mate. Thanks Carol for a very important topic and video.
It can be a joyful oe miserable experience depending on your housemate. But I truly think this is going to be the best options for many seniors on social security in the upcoming years.
Great interview! There used to be a matching service for roommates in San Francisco back in the day. I am 70, still working part time and trying to live my best life in a beautiful and expensive part of the SF Bay Area. I have a ton of housemates and we are not always compatible but the pluses still outweigh the minuses!
Wonderful insight! Thanks to Lizzie for sharing her circumstances. The housing needs of the average, aging American is a topic that will only become more critical in the coming decades. I see most of us having to become more self-reliant, i.e., do more with less. Your channel could be a portal to senior common sense-thinking. Being flexible with living arrangements is key I think for those of us who are thankfully healthy but don’t have a big wad stored away. Was thinking - I grew up in a time when boarding houses were around, but on the way out. They were run by people who were willing to trust boarders to be decent, respectful and not freeload off them. Times and people have radically changed but I’m really hoping the concept of house-sharing in some way catches on again. Peace, everyone!
I also love the idea of bringing back boarding houses. They provided a great option not only financially but socially as well. Housing is indeed going to be one of the issues that becomes increasingly.more critical for not only seniors but for anyone with a limited income.
I’m so with you on this. I’ve welcomed folks into my home only to be disrespected and at times bogarted. I’ve stayed with family members who became very bossy and controlling about even the smallest things. I’m at a family member house now for 4 years since Covid and although I help clean cook babysitter, lawn care and trash. They’re still not satisfied. As much as I enjoy people’s company I just can’t take it anymore with the sharing living spaces. My SSI is crap which means that I have to go back to work immediately in order to afford housing. 🤷🏽♀️💯😳
This makes me so grateful for the decisions I made to stay healthy and be financially conservative. I love my independent active lifestyle that gives me time to provide Reiki to cancer patients and thrive in my happiness!
Until her friend meets a man. Forgive me for being a Debby Downer, however, that‘s what happened to a friend of mine. The same situation as this lady, good friend everything was going really well, and then her friend met a man and wanted to live alone. One has to take all those things into account. I have so enjoyed this video, thank you very much. I am not retired yet but am learning and preparing. I do not want to live with a room mate but, have downsized substantially now, 5 years before my retirement.
Well if that happens I am sure she will be happy for her friend and figure something else out. Good move on your part starting out now planning and thinking ahead for your retirement.

I'm similar. I'm the homeowner and have 2 flatmates, a good friend and her adult son. I'm away 2 weeks of the month visiting family and friends. It's lovely having people I trust taking care of the house, plants, lawns etc. I'm sure they enjoy having the house to themselves too. There are matching services for senior homeowners who need help to pay the mortgage and seniors who need to rent a room. I saw a news piece about it--the applicants were matched for personality, interests etc. It was in California, don't remember which city, or who was running the program. But, it was very successful and a great idea.
@@ruthmedford5582 I think it is a government program. An example of this is a program run by Ventura County government called HomeShare. People are enrolled in the program, interviewed and matched with a homeowner. I just did a quick google and found this one, I think there must be more throughout the state. Great idea, wish they had it here where I live!
@@ruthmedford5582 There is a Ventura County government program called HomeShare that is an example of this sort of matching service. I found this with a quick online search. I think the original one I saw on TV was a government program as well.

Thanks Carol! For all of the divorced, widowed folks out there, check with SSA to confirm you are collecting the maximum benefit, either survivor or ex spouse benefit can potentially add to your check.
Depends on when your X spouse took his Social Security mine took his at the age of 62 I took social security at the age of 65 and my benefit was larger drawing off my work record. If he passes and I have not remarried I will draw his Social Security which is almost twice mine
@@noreenn6976 Depends on what state you live in. I live in NY which is a 50/50 state. That means all assets, including SS and pensions, are combined, and split in half. What it basically does is ensure neither the husband or wife has enough to live on.
I found you Interview with Lizzy Interesting she had some Ideas and you had a Great Interview with her I look forward to watching her again in you next follow up Interview as I am 62 and on SSI thankyou for this Video with her .
When I was in school and took my first job in the mid 70s - I was told back then that SS would NOT be the answer to a full retirement. I had family and friends who were told the same thing, but failed to do what I did: save. Even making a modest income, you can save 10% of your earnings - and over 45 years of accumulating - it will grow into a sizeable retirement nest egg to help with the SS. Sadly, most people either don't want to save, put it off, or think they will hit the lotto before they retire.
I don't have good roommate stories. I stayed in my bedroom all the time and slept with a chair propped against the doorknob at night. Usually, I eventually had to install a deadbolt lock on my bedroom door to enforce my privacy. I didn't feel safe or respected.
There was a website in Texas for matching up senior roommates. I cannot recall what it was called now. Anyway, it was around for a fair few years, and then the year I discovered it, it shut down. I have no idea why. I never had a roommate in my life. I was married for 25 years. My spouse was the only person I ever lived with outside of my family of origin. I cannot imagine ever finding someone truly compatible to live with. I am not an easy person to live with and neither was my spouse.
First time viewer here. And what comes up? Hommme. I graduated from OHS. Oceanside is as much a home as almost anywhere I ever lived. This makes me wonder if I could manage to come home after all. I've always been content living alone after my husband died, but a horrific illness that has lasted a good long while has me seriouly rethinking an awful lot about life and my furure. I feel like daily walks on the beach would be so restorative.
She speaks to so many. Older women are finding them selves homeless more and more. They are the fastest growing segment of the population that are ending up homeless. So no me the country dealt with homelessness you know, they made it illegal! That was their answer. Things are getting scary for sure.
The calvary is not coming. So, people are going to have to start working together to come up with solutions such as shared housing, like boarding houses of old, or renting spaces on private land or other creative alternatives as I believe things are only going to get worse based on the Supreme Court's latest findings in the Grant's Pass case regarding homeless people.
Good for you! I am so burnt out on nursing after 39 years that I'm considering leaving the field and working a different job (part time) in my retirement.
Hey right on . People need to realize they can live on alot less. Some people buy so much un needed stuff then they rent a storage locker. I suppliment my SS by selling firewood.
We do live in a country of excesses. But I think recent and continued hard times have forced many folks to make necessary changes, including getting rid of expensive storage units holding junk theybcould have paid for 2x over woth the fees paid on storage.
All 62,& older People… don’t forget to request your spousal benefits… especially if they earned higher wages…they will boost your benefits up to at least to 1/2 what your higher earning spouse, or x spouse earned… if you’re divorced… you must have been married for 10 years. & investigate if you were not married, but have “common law “in your state.
I bet most times, people living together in a roommate situation doesn’t work out. It would have to be two people that really connect. Probably most eventually turn into The Odd Couple. Probably another reason why people with limited funds seek van life.
I think that in modern America we have moved away from the way we used to live, in community with multiple generations under one roof like most of the world still lives. If seniors are going to survive financially, especially those living on social security we will have to adjust our outlook from being alone and isolated at a time when we most need others to living in community.
Interesting to hear how people are navigating aging and retirement. This video has me rethinking moving away from the area I live in now wirh my only family and many friends..... my house feels like a burden though and downsizing in this area is not an option.
There is certainly a lot to consider as we get older and decide our best longterm options. Each situation is so unique. In your situation I would say some things to consider are what will the financial and physical impact as far as upkeep be to you should you remain in your home and how easily do you make friends and are the areas you might consider making a move to ones where you would have easy access to opportunities to meet people and get out and about. Both financial and emotional considerations are important. Is it feasible for you to spend some time in an area you are considering to get a feel for what it feels like as a community and how you feel being away from family and friends l? Kind of a summer getaway trial?
I had to move from a very expensive state to a lower cost state. I also downsized my home and paid cash for it. There are not many amenities, but I can drive 30 minutes, if I want to go to a more urban area . Otherwise, I live in the mountains and love it.
Yes. Covid was a big trigger in my retirement decision. But I’m kinda on the ‘ other side’ of it……I’m a nurse and the pandemic was so stressful , work was so much harder, and frightening. Every day I went to work wondering if something at work, exposure to Covid, would kill me, or that I would bring it home to my family endangering their health….that was so stressful. Then just the simple act of wearing a mask all day long ( hard to breathe through those) and the other PPE that we had to wear all day was uncomfortable, hot, and difficult to physically tolerate. I worked in an environment where I was required to make snap life or death decisions every day and patients were so much sicker, scared and their families so much more stressed out, trying to help them was so much more taxing. Other things too, daily on my way home I’d drive past a giant billboard that called nurses ‘Heros’ but it was disheartening because it seemed an empty sentiment because that idea was never reflected in my paycheck! And when the government did give some money to healthcare providers only a tiny amount actually came to the nurses…it was kept by the company executives! I think the final straw was when one of our nurses was found dead at her lunch hour. She’d has a heart attack….and another co worker was found dead, also a heart attack, in his car in the parking lot. Those things accentuated the personal dangers of simply going to my job. So, even though I was asked to stay, I retired. I was 68…. And the long years at the job had left me with heart issues, kidney issues, back issues and other joint issues. But, at least I didn’t die at the job!
If no one else has genuinely thanked you for what you and so many of your co-workers did during thr pandemic let me do so now. I can't even begin to wrap my head around how stressful it was for you basically having to walk thru flames every day.not.knowing if you would survive or bring the deadly.virus home to your family. I liken it to being in a war zone day in and day out. Even though you did not get the recognition financially or otherwise that you so deserved you are indeed a hero.and undoubtedly many people are alive because of your efforts ajd sacrifice.

I live my life nice, simple healthy, and eat a mostly plant based way of eating, maintaining my yearly health maintenance, I walk daily pray daily, i do squats daily, light hand weights...there is a swimming pool and is very nicely well maintained, quiet, clean, only 6 apartments in a building..its a small complex....many residents are retired, the complex is surrounded by homeowners..its nice...i stay away from debt, live comfortably, I'm not on any medications, still drive my well maintained 2011 kio rio 68,200 miles...no aches, pain, illnesses, etc...im spirtual , pray daily, read the Bible daily, and im really blessed...❤
Finding a compatible roommate is a real challenge.
I don't believe it's just luck! She looks like someone who is considerate.

I'm 53 and sharehouse a rental with my youngest child (in their mid 20's) and my husband (ex, but not, it's complicated but we each have our own space). If they wanted to move on, I'd find other housemates. It's a great solution provided everyone is responsible!
Shared housing really is an affordable option that should be considered by seniors.
Life has no guarantees, even having savings and wealth and properties.
You are right. All we can do is prepare the best we can and pray.
Even tho I have an efficient furnace,
It sounds like you and your husband made some very wise decisions that are paying off for you now.
I love the title "Her best life" I can't wait to do the same, sadly at 55, my life hasn't been good so far. There's a light at the tunnel now
Let me just give you this word of encouragement. The life you have had in the past does not have to be the life you you are destined to have in the future. I started my RUclips channel with no technical know how at all at 67. I prayed and asked God to direct my path. Me too!!
Great interview. Lovely woman....with glorious hair!
Being remarried is difficult, so many dynamics. Easier to stay single.
Ehat a pleasure to meet Lizzie. Thank you, Ladies, for sharing
Carol .. income info on who you interview for this series is absolutely essential to get perspective for viewers. I know that is very personal info.
Many people share their income in these sorts of videos and some don't. They're always valuable either way.

Thank you for sharing Lizzie’s story!🙏❤️

But, it was very successful and a great idea.

Lovely lady!!!
Very informative!
I'm glad you found this video beneficial!
I don't have good roommate stories. I stayed in my bedroom all the time and slept with a chair propped against the doorknob at night. Usually, I eventually had to install a deadbolt lock on my bedroom door to enforce my privacy. I didn't feel safe or respected.
That was definitely not a good situation!! I have had some unpleasant roommate experiences as well, but also some great ones fortunately.
I love your videos - information with human interest and compassion. They are so timely for me, as I'm sure they are for many others.
With rapidly escalating housing costs it is going to be a big issue for so many seniors.
This is why it’s important to keep social security solvent. Taking a 20% cut for this gal or people in her shoes will be tough.
We need to close the border so these illegals are not drying up Medicare and social security!
It is certainly important to recognize what would and would not work for you before getting into an unbearable situation for all involved.
That was excellent!!

I am able to live in my paid for home with no roommate at the age of 70
Interesting to hear how people are navigating aging and retirement.
I downsized my house 21 years ago knowing that I was not likely to remarry or want a roommate
