I understand and respect people’s opinion in the comment section. But you guys need to understand the fact that women constitute almost 50% of the population of India and in parliament their representation is hardly 10%. Most women do not consider politics as a career in the first place coz they have not been brought up as leaders. They are forced to be led by men. When women are not represented adequately, when they are hardly involved in law making how are women going to be safe? How are they going to be empowered? Men never will be able to understand and look at things the way women do. Yes, 75 years of independence and what did we actually accomplish in those long years? We need to look into that as well. Female infanticide, child marriage, domestic violence, sexual harassment, dowry harassment women did go through all this 75 years ago and are still subjected to all this even today. We haven’t made any considerable changes. Reservations are not given to achieve EQUALITY but to accomplish EQUITY. Women need reservations not coz they are any less capable than men but because they have been suppressed from realising their potential for centuries that most of them don’t realise they actually have it in them. This kind of mindset needs reservations. There’s absolutely no shame in it. Legal actions can only manoeuvre the social changes. Also, Sonia Gandhi , Pratibha Patil are not our representatives. Ever heard Supriya Sule speak in parliament? Ever come across Mahua Moitra raise issues? They are our representatives for starters having at least 20 more people like them in parliament is going to make a huge difference.

When Nirbhaya case happened- Sheila Dixit’s Govt was in power. Yet we know how much time it took. I understand one of them actually got free (after some years of jail) on technicality that he was minor then. What we need is not only reservation....what India needs is to give basic education to all the children including girls... compulsory education....if the girls are educated enough, automatically they will be competent and will rise to the higher positions...then reservation won't be a problem

India is rooted in partiarchy where we have little girls dropping out of schools at shocking levels, simply because of lack of sanitary measures... We have women being married off at an early age and being assigned the role of the housewife before she has even finished schooling. It is not an even playing field at all. Men can cry and talk about how women aren't doing the dangerous jobs but it is not becaus they don't want to, but because they haven't been allowed to have any authority over their lives for hundreds of years. It's easy to pin point and blame women but think a little deeper. Think of your mother and all she could have been doing in this world if not for patriarchy.
