I rarely comment but, you are the best. I am a retired mechanic who has done that job on many other vehicles, and your step by step was flawless. I watched just to see the wheel bering removal. I own a truck like that and have never done a Ford before. Thanks for a quality video.

You just saved this old man a lot of headache. Bought a 2000 F250 two months agos, pulled a 30' trailer from OK to AZ, wandering all the way. A bit of play in the steering, had that fixed; added the missing "stablizer', and still wandering around. One search found you and I can sleep tonight knowing that my mechanic will be checking this out. THANK YOU Grasshopper, (before your time).

I have a 2005 F-350 SRW I bought new with 230,000 miles. This condition started suddenly. I knew it wasn't likely the ball joints or steering components as it started suddenly. So, after watching this video I went out and sure enough the driveshaft joints was the issue. When you were inside the truck and said front driveshafts I had no idea how that could happen. I had better get busy. GREAT VIDEO!

Unquestionaly the best instructional video I've seen on youtube. No character acting or hype. I was impressed by the way you covered all of the possible headaches and continued to stress patience. The first lesson I imparted to my own kids; If it is difficult, getting angry will not make it easier. Think it through, keep your cool and work to figure out what YOU are not understanding. It's not personal to the truck, only to you. Truck don't care how mad you get. I have my maintenance crew performing 80% of our truck repairs in the shop now, saving thouands of dollars that will be put to better use; Newer/better tools/more repairs/maintenance for the same money. Well done!

I was doing this job on my 2003 but couldn’t get the axle seal off. After 30 minutes and a bunch of cursing, I came to check youtube when I came across this video. The crowbar trick was awesome, had it out in 2 minutes, which included time to find my big crowbar! I came back looking for a trick to get off the retaining ring from the u-joint, but apparently I was doing it correctly by applying a lot of cursing mixed with beer. Thanks for posting and sharing!
This sort of information is worth more than gold. Imagine the thousands of dollars wasted throwing parts on a problem that's completely hidden unless you know to check this. Thumbs up!

thanks, I was chasing "wandering" steering problem, went to 3 different mechanics (one was ford dealer). after $1300 for ball joints and tie rods and "diagnoitic" fees. i had Tuffy replace u joints after watching your video. NO MORE STEERING ISSUES THANKS AGAIN
For two years I've been trying to sort this problem out. Three different alignment shops, a new Redhead steering gear, etc. etc. Watched this video and sure enough frozen u-joint. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge.
The dealer (stealerships) cannot even diagnose these problems.. thanks they replaced a ball joint for $750 and didn't fix the wander. 2008 F350 Super Duty 110K miles. Super great presentation and you are super smart...

Ford pickups have been wandering the roadways ever since they left the straight axle. I had a 1981 F-350 dually.Checked everything out, everything new,including the wheels and tires which were balanced. Tried a different set of tires, same thing, wandering all over. Even got pulled over by the Mo.State Highway Patrol and given a drunk test of which I passed. The officer drove that truck and said I was ok to go. It wandered with him driving it. My uncle worked at Ford and said that they all did it. A very solid truck with lots of H.P. but loved gasoline. 220miles and 88 gallons later I arrived. It had to go. Have not bought a Ford since.
Great video, this had happened to my 04 F250 a few years ago. I changed ball joints and did u-joint also. Mine has just started steering like it is stuck between left and rigtht center again. Excellent way to diagnose issue. Thanks for taking the time to share your work.

You saved my day. As my truck passed 150k I’ve been changing steering parts as they’ve worn out and everything is tight now. But, I couldn’t figure out what was going on with this intermittent jerky steering after a turn. I started considering the steering box before this video so thanks, you saved me a ton of $.
As a diesel mechanic this is a good video. Only thing ill add. Anytime i do u joints i do ball joints. Your right there at the knuckle with everything out of the way. Another hour each side saves the customers a ton of money later on. If the u joints are worn the ball joints are worn out to
@@InTheShop id be pissed at whoever did ball joints and not u joints. They go hand and in my shop. no exceptions. if there is absolutely no money left in the budget ive ate the cost of labor and parts so the customer gets the repair they need
@@InTheShop I use to work in the dairy industry and everything was stainless steel. If someone forgot anti seize you would never get nuts and bolts apart again.
@@davidcoalkey6074 I use that shit on everything! just rotated the tires on my 014 PS, wire wheel, wire brush, Never seize. a winning combo. I'll even go so far as removing bolts now that I know I'll need to later just to goop them up.
My paps truck was miss diagnosed and he dont pay for something that dont fix the problem got a free steering box out of and tore his front end apart himself 02 7.3 u r a great mechanic I have to do joint on his 07 6.0 and this video help tons good man thumbs up bro

Your my HERO I got my truck fixed . They replaced the universal joints and upper and lower ball joints just because the truck was 18 old and I figured if they had it to that point they might as well do them . Thanks for taking the time to help people like me . GOD BLESS you
Your help was appreciated on my 2002 ford . I also have a 2019 superduty king ranch and run into a proublem towing my 5th wheel. Its 59" from the top of the bed doun to the ground and when my 5th is attached there is only 4" between the truck and camper overhang. I spent week's trying to find a solution so I didn't hit the dam 5th wheel agen . The solution was to change the 4" blocks to 2" blocks out of a 2020 they sit 2" shorter . I added airbags so when not towing I can put it back to 59" . also when towing on the highway I put the truck at normal height so I don't get high beamed. I thought I would pass this along because nobody out there could help me not even several ford dealerships . Thanks

Thanks for the tutorial, I've got a wandering 2005 F-350. I just ordered the parts and 6697 oil seal tool. Now I just need to tear the front end down and install the new u-joints. You've given me the confidence to take on this project!
Best I've seen, described the problem well then showed all the tricks/tools needed to repair the worn parts. I already looked where this guy shop is. Too bad I live in California and the shop is back east.
Great video. I bought a 99 f250 a couple years ago for a backup/hunting truck. Steering wanders constantly, it’s a very unnerving feeling. I’ve had the front end inspected by two very experienced shops. One changed a tie rod end, another changed out 1 front u-joint and did an alignment. The tech showed me the u joint that was bad, he was basically prying on it with a small crowbar and noticed the slop in it. The test that you perform is the key to identifying this issue. Just because there is no slop or play in the u-joint obviously doesn’t mean it’s not bad. The steering was marginally improved after the 1 u-joint and tie rod end. However, because the other joint was still “tight” (lacking slop or play), it was not replaced. I even took it back to that shop a year later and had it re inspected and re aligned, still wandering all over the road. Going to get the other side done and see if that ends the saga!
Nate! My F350 has been in the shop more than on the road. lol. Spent so much money attempting to fix wandering steering problem...Local Ford dealer told me "thats just the way it is"! Cant thank you enough for sharing your knowledge.
Commonly overlooked. Once you know you will check every time. I have found a lot of them frozen up while doing balljoint jobs and usually always quote them at the same time.
@@InTheShop The axles were fine.. the ball joints were a bitch getting them off the truck and pressing them out... had to borrow Snapon air hammer, ball joint tool, and 5ft breaker bar. It kicked my butt.

I know what I'm doing this weekend. We're fortunate to have a dedicated diesel tech in our town who also does excellent work. Our '03 7.3l has the typical wander. There were some worn front end parts that needed replacing and that helped, but didn't completely eliminate the issue. We notice it most when pulling or camper. I thought maybe I hadn't set up the weight distribution hitch correctly, so I paid the RV dealer to double check my work and all was well. We thought about adding a steering stabilizer, but I'll be troubleshooting u-joints prior to that! I have all the tools minus the seal driver and enough mechanical skills that even with the $80 tool purchase I can save myself a bunch of money doing this myself. Excellent video; thank you for sharing your expertise.

Wow. I replaced ball joints, sway bar end links, shocks, and springs, all was actually needed but it didn’t fix my wander issue. I’d imagine this is it. Thank you.

Wow. Excellent vid. I did an extensive front end job on my 2008 F-250 a few years back. I just enjoy watching how others do this. The worst part of the job for me was removing that damn snap ring. Thing is a fat as a nickle. I had to buy a very expensive snap ring pliers and even then it wasn't easy. In my case I chose to replace the entire axle with a new universal already installed. I wasn't confident in my abilities to press out that old universal. The irony is, once I dove this deep into it, I was like: "I'm in here I mind as well change the ball joints while I have everything apart". So I ended up getting the ball joint press tool from the Advanced Auto loaner program after all. You do excellent work. Great job!

I just did this to my 99 Ram. Had steer wander on the road and a lot of clunking when hitting bumps and it’s a lot better now. My mechanic told me the U joints were completely shot in every way.
Really well done presentation. I have a 2000 excursion, and the steering was goofy, thought it was the box, valves, who knows. Took it to my mechanic, put on the hoist, yanked the tie rods as you did, and checked the ujoint. Exactly what the problem was. It can actually cause the steering to lock on you, a real fight the odd time.
Mad props, I've worked on a ton of these (pro-Ford tech). Obviously, u-joint was the failure on this unit, props to you for correctly diagnosing. I"ve never seen this myself despite working on nothing but Super Duty for the last 20+ years. More often I've seen ball joints sticking (usually replacements). Tighten ball joints in proper sequence (50 ft/lbs bottom, 70 ft/lbs top, 150 ft/lbs bottom) to keep replacements free turning.
I do appreciate you my friend. I was pulling my hair out, what's left of it, trying to diagnose the problem. With the truck in the air, I spent countless times grabbing the tire at 12 and 6, and 3 and 9 with no movement was very frustrating. Thanks very much for explaining the diagnosing portion of the problem. It's nice to know the 'why we're doing this' instead of just the 'what to do'. Intermittent problems are the worse ! My hats off to you. I owe you a beer.

I would do one more step. Clean the yokes on the axle. That prevents debris from getting in the new u-joints. Good video. Very direct without the un-necessary back story.

Thanks to your video I was finally able to correctly diagnose my 2012 SD. The condition worsened over a years time, I was so aggravated cause the condition was intermittent.
I came across this video in my RUclips feed late one nigh this week. Today I checked my joints and sure enough passenger side is seized. I've only had the truck a few years and looks like the PO changed them to non greaseable type, also seems to have a seized tie rod on the drivers side, so it looks like I've got some busted knuckles in my future. I had a 1981 F-350 dually.Checked everything out, everything new,including the wheels and tires which were balanced. Tried a different set of tires, same thing, wandering all over. Even got pulled over by the Mo.State Highway Patrol and given a drunk test of which I passed. The officer drove that truck and said I was ok to go. It wandered with him driving it. My uncle worked at Ford and said that they all did it. A very solid truck with lots of H.P. but loved gasoline. 220miles and 88 gallons later I arrived. It had to go. Have not bought a Ford since.
Great video, this had happened to my 04 F250 a few years ago. I changed ball joints and did u-joint also. Mine has just started steering like it is stuck between left and rigtht center again. Excellent way to diagnose issue. Thanks for taking the time to share your work.

You saved my day. As my truck passed 150k I’ve been changing steering parts as they’ve worn out and everything is tight now. But, I couldn’t figure out what was going on with this intermittent jerky steering after a turn. I started considering the steering box before this video so thanks, you saved me a ton of $.

As a diesel mechanic this is a good video. Only thing ill add. Anytime i do u joints i do ball joints. Your right there at the knuckle with everything out of the way. Another hour each side saves the customers a ton of money later on. If the u joints are worn the ball joints are worn out to
I agree! Someone had done the ball joints not too long before this but skipped on the axle joints.
@@InTheShop id be pissed at whoever did ball joints and not u joints. They go hand and in my shop. no exceptions. if there is absolutely no money left in the budget ive ate the cost of labor and parts so the customer gets the repair they need

I noticed you used ant seize when you were assembling. That stuff can be a life saver down the road.
Saves so many headaches down the road! I use it as much as I can.
@@InTheShop I use to work in the dairy industry and everything was stainless steel. If someone forgot anti seize you would never get nuts and bolts apart again.
@@davidcoalkey6074 I use that shit on everything! just rotated the tires on my 014 PS, wire wheel, wire brush, Never seize. a winning combo. I'll even go so far as removing bolts now that I know I'll need to later just to goop them up.

Your help was appreciated on my 2002 ford . I also have a 2019 superduty king ranch and run into a proublem towing my 5th wheel. Its 59" from the top of the bed doun to the ground and when my 5th is attached there is only 4" between the truck and camper overhang. I spent week's trying to find a solution so I didn't hit the dam 5th wheel agen . The solution was to change the 4" blocks to 2" blocks out of a 2020 they sit 2" shorter . I added airbags so when not towing I can put it back to 59" . also when towing on the highway I put the truck at normal height so I don't get high beamed. I thought I would pass this along because nobody out there could help me not even several ford dealerships . Thanks

Great video. I bought a 99 f250 a couple years ago for a backup/hunting truck. Steering wanders constantly, it’s a very unnerving feeling. I’ve had the front end inspected by two very experienced shops. One changed a tie rod end, another changed out 1 front u-joint and did an alignment. The tech showed me the u joint that was bad, he was basically prying on it with a small crowbar and noticed the slop in it. The test that you perform is the key to identifying this issue. Just because there is no slop or play in the u-joint obviously doesn’t mean it’s not bad. The steering was marginally improved after the 1 u-joint and tie rod end. However, because the other joint was still “tight” (lacking slop or play), it was not replaced. I even took it back to that shop a year later and had it re inspected and re aligned, still wandering all over the road. Going to get the other side done and see if that ends the saga!

Pulling my axles today to replace ball joints glad I watched so I can check the axles probably would have sat them aside and not check the movement
Commonly overlooked. Once you know you will check every time. I have found a lot of them frozen up while doing balljoint jobs and usually always quote them at the same time.
@@InTheShop The axles were fine.. the ball joints were a bitch getting them off the truck and pressing them out... had to borrow Snapon air hammer, ball joint tool, and 5ft breaker bar. It kicked my butt.

I know what I'm doing this weekend. We're fortunate to have a dedicated diesel tech in our town who also does excellent work. Our '03 7.3l has the typical wander. There were some worn front end parts that needed replacing and that helped, but didn't completely eliminate the issue. We notice it most when pulling or camper. I thought maybe I hadn't set up the weight distribution hitch correctly, so I paid the RV dealer to double check my work and all was well. We thought about adding a steering stabilizer, but I'll be troubleshooting u-joints prior to that! I have all the tools minus the seal driver and enough mechanical skills that even with the $80 tool purchase I can save myself a bunch of money doing this myself. Excellent video; thank you for sharing your expertise.

Wow. Excellent vid. I did an extensive front end job on my 2008 F-250 a few years back. I just enjoy watching how others do this. The worst part of the job for me was removing that damn snap ring. Thing is a fat as a nickle. I had to buy a very expensive snap ring pliers and even then it wasn't easy.
In my case I chose to replace the entire axle with a new universal already installed. I wasn't confident in my abilities to press out that old universal. The irony is, once I dove this deep into it, I was like: "I'm in here I mind as well change the ball joints while I have everything apart". So I ended up getting the ball joint press tool from the Advanced Auto loaner program after all.

I just did this to my 99 Ram. Had steer wander on the road and a lot of clunking when hitting bumps and it’s a lot better now. My mechanic told me the U joints were completely shot in every way.
Really well done presentation. I have a 2000 excursion, and the steering was goofy, thought it was the box, valves, who knows. Took it to my mechanic, put on the hoist, yanked the tie rods as you did, and checked the ujoint. Exactly what the problem was. It can actually cause the steering to lock on you, a real fight the odd time.

Its possible. Check out the joints and see what you find. If its not that I would consider a possible failed brake booster if its a diesel truck.
Mad props, I've worked on a ton of these (pro-Ford tech). Obviously, u-joint was the failure on this unit, props to you for correctly diagnosing. I"ve never seen this myself despite working on nothing but Super Duty for the last 20+ years. More often I've seen ball joints sticking (usually replacements). Tighten ball joints in proper sequence (50 ft/lbs bottom, 70 ft/lbs top, 150 ft/lbs bottom) to keep replacements free turning.

With the truck in the air, I spent countless times grabbing the tire at 12 and 6, and 3 and 9 with no movement was very frustrating. I came across this video in my RUclips feed late one nigh this week. Today I checked my joints and sure enough passenger side is seized. I've only had the truck a few years and looks like the PO changed them to non greaseable type, also seems to have a seized tie rod on the drivers side, so it looks like I've got some busted knuckles in my future.
