First of all .. I absolutely love your voice .. the way you speak .. your accent and everything is just so soft and soothing to listen to .. secondly loved the tutorial.. you are a wonderful artist
I learned a lot just from watching this recording. The small circling base layer and he sequence of laying down the basic structure make so much ch sense. I’m ok at following instructions but crap at visualisation so I will be drawing dogs noses for a fortnight to see how much I can improve. Great work.👍❤️
This is amazing always found drawing and shading dogs 🐶 nose incredibly hard this is a game changer what you have shown us excellent work grace On the bit in the video when you was going in sharp pencil to do the highlights what grade of pencil was that you was using.
This is brilliant Grace. That tip about the Gelly Roll pen is genius. Just bought one. I'd love to be able to see the reference pic when I'm watching your videos. A link to the pdf of it would be great. Also, in this video your drawing table shook quite a bit, which you probably noticed yourself. If you start a Patreon I would join for sure. Well done!
Thanks so much Orla, I'm glad you liked it! Let me know how you find the gelly roll, I've found them to be such a game changer. Thanks for the feedback, my desk shaking drives me mad so I've now got a seperate boom stand to attach the camera clamp to so should be problem solved from now on! In my patreon tutorials I'm supplying the high quality reference and line art, but will definitely put the reference in my RUclips videos for next time. Thanks Orla!🤎
Great video. Same, never had a problem with the shine. The reason why it does shine is because graphite is a crystal and it is the angle the light hits it. The darker the grade the more it shines as it has a higher graphite content but when the picture is framed and lit correctly its not a problem. For paper St Cuthbers Saunders Waterford or Arches Aquarelle and both are available in pure white. Good luck with Patreon have looked at it myself but I don't think I could be consistent enough 😊
Thanks Jamie! And who wouldn't want their crystals to shine? I really love it, it almost feels like the drawing is etched in silver. Thanks for the paper recommendations, I'll get some sheets with my next order. I've just ordered some Hahnemuhle Bristol Board as it's all I could find in larger sheets for a commission!
Wow ! Great video and fantastic art work! I see you have a piece of plastic under your hand as your drawing. That must help with all the smudging that occurs. Is it like a piece of plexiglass ?
First of all you’re a fantastic artist teacher. As I was watching you draw the nose I kept thinking my music by David Lanz I listen to while drawing was playing in the background, which it has before.
To answer the question about what people like, I ended up speeding up your drawing by two times and muting the sound. But then, I have done quite a bit of graphite and charcoal drawing. Excellent work. Thank you for demonstrating the dogs nose.
Thank you for the feedback! It's funny, some people want real time footage and others learn better seeing the whole process sped up! Humans and our different brains :)
Doing mostly soft pastel pet portraits I find graphite very fun and interesting. I have been touching it and really thank you for the video. Your work is outstanding.
Yes I find the trick is to only use it on areas of shadow, as soon as there's a contrast between the white paper colour and the pen you can tell the difference but not when it's used sparingly on a dark area :)
12:35: That is my problem RIGHT THERE. That one tiny thing will distract me from my concentration and I'll forget about the tone layering that I'm supposed to be doing. I want to do a tiny area all the way to final layers, but I've still got the rest of the picture to work on yet!! I keep abandoning the order of uniform layering, rushing ahead with one area because I've gotten carried away by how cool it will look lol! Trying to get that 3d finish straight away- and it's not how it's done! But I can't help it! Ghah! I must learn discipline in covering the entire chosen section and STAY in order of what tone mapping I'm doing, so I don't mess up a tiny spot. I do this mistake with the eyes especially, because I think they are the place where all 10 of the tones are used in one tiny spot, one end of the scale to the other right next to each other, and it's really hard to stay in order of where I'm up to with toning. I'm learning so much from your HONEST, CANDID 'confessions' of how you humbly admit your Human instincts, frailty and weakness... it is such a sign of how truly talented and pure you are. Without these Human fragile weaknesses, we are not able to show that very same aspect in our work.. which is what really makes us a master of our selves. God bless you! And thank you so much, this is great, I love the real-time, because I can see what's going on a lot better. And I love the parts that you might speed up, because you've already gone over what that section is about, so yep- speed the rest up, so we can get on to the next nugget of WISDOM which you can pass on. No, I'm serious, it doesn't matter how old or young you are, wisdom is a NATURAL quality that comes ONLY through learning and mastery and then the passing on to another. You have clearly learned a lot in college or University, Art-school perhaps? Whether you've taught yourself or had courses, you are sharing, so generously, your skills with others and that is a true blessing. You are a GOOD person. Thank you.
Just discovered you and I'm so glad I have. You are a great teacher ,so very informative .I have learned so much in just one evening of watching you. Thank you so much , look forward to following you !
I bought a rolly Pen pack with 0.5, 0.8 and 10. I find It hard to work with them us they pick Up the colour underneath when I use them over black charcoal, for example. The 0.5 won't release practically any ink. Any tips? Thanks!!!
Hi Lizzy, I've never used them with charcoal but I can see what you mean as I've use them with pastels before. I think the trick is to use dabbing motions whilst cleaning the nib every couple of strokes to prevent it all smooshing together.
Beautiful work! Just come across your channel and loved this video. Can you confirm if the jelly pens are archival? I've had mixed comments on that. Although i've bought some gel pens which say they are archival. You are an amazing artist! 👏 🥰
Hi Mandy, thank you so much! This has been a concern of mine, too. I have portraits that I've had for years using Jelly Rolls and I've never had an issue with yellowing or anything like that! I try to use them very sparingly just in case. There are oil based ones you can get, too, but they don't have the same control unfortunately.
I am so impressed by your drawing. Wondering if you could draw my dogs? One was Labrador, no idea if you could draw with color pencil or just black color, she was creamy color though. The other one was Kelpi, black color. If yes, may I ask how much you will charge? Thx a lot! Tina
Hi Tina, thank you so much for your kind words! It'd be my pleasure, my website is www.gracemurrayrowley.com, take a look at my prices and if this is within your budget we can get you booked in 🤎
Ohh awesome, let me know how you get on! There are lots of difficulties you may encounter but it's a really fun process. You may be better off following my longer tutorials on patreon but my youtubes show the basic techniques :)

Thanks for this - I’m doing my art gcse final piece and was really struggling on drawing this bit
So glad it was helpful, Tom! Good luck with your final piece, I really enjoyed art at high school 😊
Absolutely brilliant tutorial, thank you! 😊
Amazing work! Lots of great tips and definitely want to try the jelly roll on my own portraits 😀
Gorgeous!!!!
Great tutorial but I found by using the Jelly Roll pen rather than being white on Bristol Board it came out a yellow/bluish colour

@@gracemurrayart thank you, I Will try that!!! ❤️❤️
How did you get the Gelly Roll to work, I have one and it worked for approx 1 minute then stopped? I've wiped it, shaken it etc but no luck.
That's strange, maybe you got a faulty one.. have you tried wetting the nib and rolling it out on some card?
You are as beautiful as the art you make ❤️😍
