    Smothered Steak And Onions Recipe:
    Ingredients

1.50 Lbs Boneless Blade or Chuck Steak
    1 Large Onion, chopped
    1 Cup Vegetable Oil
    3/4 Cup All-Purpose Flour
    3-1/2 Cups Water
    1 Tbs Worcestershire Sauce
1 Tbs Browning & Seasoning Sauce
    2 Tbs Seasoning Salt
    1 Tbs Garlic Powder
    1 Tbs Onion Powder
    1/2 Tsp Thyme
    1/2 Tsp Black Pepper
    Instructions
    1. Clean steak by rinsing thoroughly with 1 tbs of salt and cool water.
    2. Season steak with seasoning salt, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, and pepper, then seasonings in well.
    3. Coat steak with 1/2 cup flour and sit aside for 15-20 minutes
    4. Chop onion into medium size pieces.
    5. Combine water with remaining 4 tbs of flour, worcestershire sauce, and browning sauce, then stir in well.
    6. Place a pan over high heat.
    7. Add steak and fry for 5 minutes on both sides, then sit aside.
    8. Remove most of oil, leaving 4 tbs of oil in pan and place over high heat.
    9. Add chopped onions and saute for 1 minute.
    10. Reduce heat to low-medium heat.
    11. Add steak to pan.
    12. Add slurry.
    13. Cook until gravy thickens, about 35-40 minutes (cover with a lid for very tender steak).

    • @jakemitchell1671

Sometimes you will. The best way is to fill the cut with HOT water and the flour will dissolve completely regardless of which is put in first. Warm-hot water is the key.

I grew up on smothered beef and onions and so did my mother. My grandmother and my mother would buy a London broil which is a top round a few of them when they were on sale and then put them in the freezer and use them for smothered beef and onions which was pretty much like what you've got except beef chunks and a ton-and-a-half more onion! It is very delicious and I made it every time I wanted to impress a guy! It worked but I ended up with bottom feeders the type that beat their wives. Thank you for sharing what I assume is your family recipe. :-)

      @joanns253 3 года назад +1

T-bone and Ribeye are more expensive, better for the grill or to broil. You can cook them quickly and they'll be fine. Chuck steak is much cheaper and cooked like this comes out great. No need to spend more to get this great dish.

My dad made it like this when I was a kid! I recognize it now that I see it. I always wanted to get recipes from him before he passed away, but it happened fast. He really pounded that meat out with a mallet, but maybe we were getting the cheap tough cuts, we had to stretch groceries growing up. Fried it in bacon grease and served it over egg noodles. I know what I'm doing with those chuck steaks in my freezer now. Thanks so much!
Edit: My mom also made a variation of this with pork. She served it over German dumplings called spätzle with red cabbage on the side. Thanks again for bringing back memories of this wonderful comfort food!
