    Moving an entire museums collection to a new museum is no small task, I’ve been to the “old” museum, spent four hours there only to realize that to see the entire museums collection would require at least a week, maybe two! The Grand Egyptian Museum is definitely on my short bucket list.

      Actually that's a VERY good point. It's not like moving a house or even a warehouse full of items. It's more like moving 10 or 20 warehouses full of highly breakable glass, I would say. They have to use extreme caution and take their time to preserve their treasures. I've seen them packing up the artifacts into crates in the old museum, and the logistics company that was hired to do the move seems to be doing a very thorough job. The crates are solid and everything is being done in a very deliberate manner. It's slow, sure, but I think we all want them to take their time and do it right. But things are definitely moving along because crates are going out of the old museum every day now.

    Hi John, thank you for the updates regarding the GEM. I look forward to it opening because I want to schedule my trip to Egypt! On your videos, may I suggest that you eliminate the cutaways to people shrugging shoulders, etc to emphasize a point. You make your points very well and really don’t need the pantomime in addition.

    • @TheEgyptTravelChannel
      @TheEgyptTravelChannel  9 дней назад

      @Randy-ev9nr Hi, Randy. You're very welcome. It is a pleasure to make these videos, blog posts, etc. to keep the world updated about the GEM (since the GEM itself doesn't seem to think it's necessary to do for its own sake). I'm still experimenting with video editing styles and techniques. Some say they like the more whimsical elements threaded in to keep things light and entertaining, while others prefer more straight-forward info presentation. Finding a balance that pleases everyone is no easy task, but I think you'll see the video creative style evolving over the course of the next 6 months, especially now that I've hired a full-time video editor to help.

    I had a great visit to the old museum 2 + years ago, looking forward to returning to Egypt to visit the GEM when it finally does open. I'll be holding off about 2 years probably, but I know it will be impressive. The modern Civilisation Museum certainly indicates that it will be a beautiful place to behold, once complete and open.

    • @JohnNavarreInEgypt
      @JohnNavarreInEgypt 2 месяца назад +1

      Yes, I think you're right. In 2 years it should DEFINITELY be open, so it will be worth the wait. And also yes, the NMEC was well done, even though it's very small. So we can see from that project that they are hiring better architects and designers do to the new buildings, and this will be the showcase of the whole country, so it'll surely be amazing on the inside.

  • @nthornberry
    @nthornberry 4 месяца назад +5

    Thanks for a well balanced presentation of developments. The government hasn't had much luck in terms of an optimum time slot to open the GEM. First the pandemic, and now the Isreali- Palestinian conflict. At some point they must see that they are doing tremendous self-inflicted damage to the tourism for ancient Egyptian sites and museums. It's not only that the Cairo Museum has been drained, tresures of the Luxor Museum and elsewhere have been moved to the GEM where no one can see them at least four the past few years and on going. Its such a fabulous country to visit, but I'm goi g to hold out for the opening before return for a long visit to take everything in 😀 Thanks for your good work 🙏

    • @TheEgyptTravelChannel
      @TheEgyptTravelChannel  9 дней назад

      @nthornberry You're very very welcome. Indeed, Egypt hasn't had the best of luck. And you're exactly right that they are hurting themselves badly by not just getting the thing done and open as fast as possible. They're also hurting themselves with the horrible public relations and communications job they're doing about the GEM. It's virtually nonexistent and what little that does trickle out is just bad. They really need a lot of help and a big wakeup call in the PR/comms department.

    We were scheduled to visit Egypt in November and among our guest guides were Dr. Hawass and Dr. Waziri. Then we were notified that our tour had been postponed until February 2025 due to a significant archaeological announcement that was to be made in November. Could it be that would be the opening of the GEM, since surely Dr. Hawass and Dr. Waziri would definitely be participating in the opening? Really appreciate the updates.

    Thanks for your informative update. As always, clear and concise. Looking forward to your next update which will, hopefully, give the opening date. My fingers are crossed. It is not the right time for a grand opening with pageantry and dignitaries from a all around the world due to circumstances elsewhere but if it doesn't open soon Egypt's tourist industry will go into further decline.

    My wife and I toured the GEM the middle of April and our Egyptologist guide made an observation in Cairo how some of the city buildings had very large adds for the GEM.....most around 4 stories or more high as i recall. He mentioned that the GEM might be close to opening because that type of paint will fade sooner in the Summer sun. Interesting and mostly a hopeful observation for him and my wife and I. What we saw of the GEM was wonderful!....I recommend travel through the whole country as we did for two weeks in April. We really love this country and the people.

    • @JohnNavarreInEgypt
      @JohnNavarreInEgypt 2 месяца назад

      Actually that's a very good observation. You're right. There ARE currently lots of HUGE, multi-story canvas ads for the GEM on the sides of high-rise residential buildings throughout Giza, especially along the major highways. I've noticed those tool and thought they were an odd use of their marketing budget. But you're right - they are there now.

    My friend was in Kairo 2 weeks ago and she was told that the opening of the Museum is when they Build a Bridge from the Museum to the pyramids wäre people can Walk over.

    • @TheEgyptTravelChannel
      @TheEgyptTravelChannel  4 месяца назад +3

      Whoever told her that is just guessing. The only one who knows for sure is the president of Egypt because he will decide that. But they definitely do not need the elevated walkway to be finished in order to open the museum. Its construction does not interfere with access to the museum parking lot or the building. It starts at the far end of the huge parking lot away from the side that the museum entrance is on. And since you need a car and driver anyway to get out to the museum, everyone already has transportation over to the pyramids. So the walkway will be a nice addition to the wider area once it's finished, but it's not necessary at all to open the museum.

      Everyone has their guesses, but no one truly knows. In May, I would imagine they would have seen that things had not come together over the spring like many had hoped (and like the minister had said they would). Honestly, the world and tourists don't care about the opening party. Not one bit. They just want it open. Only Egyptians care about the grand opening ceremony. That will be a lot of money completely wasted if they think that the world cares about it and that it will make a difference to foreign visitors. Tourists just want the dang thing open and they don't care about any celebrations or parties.

    • @JohnNavarreInEgypt
      @JohnNavarreInEgypt 2 месяца назад

      That's an interesting theory, but I don't think that will be the case. They have already heavily promoted the fact that the new museum will house all 5000 artifacts from King Tut's Tomb, so that would include his most famous treasures too. They say that this will be the first time that ALL tomb contents are on display, and they'll be displayed together in a special exhibition room at the GEM. I think they'll keep some lesser important artifacts in the old museum building as decoration and I think they'll rent it out for events. That's my theory on what they'll do with the old museum building downtown.

It makes sense but yes… it’s hurting the image and idea that Egypt wants to portray for the opening 🥺🥹🤧…

    • @TheEgyptTravelChannel
      @TheEgyptTravelChannel  4 месяца назад +2

      Yes, I think they are pretty set on having the entire production be an Egyptian-led and even all Egyptian-staffed production. Many countries in the region are open to having the best talent in the entire world come work there and run things and staff things, but Egypt is very closed to that idea, and many things in Egypt suffer in world-class quality as a result of not having access to the best talent in the world (like Saudi Arabia and the Emirates and Qatar do). But with this event in particular, I think it makes total sense to have it be a 100% Egyptian event inside and out.

      Tut's tomb was discovered and opened in stages. November 4th was the day that the stairway leading down to the door was first noticed, so that's often credited as the discovery date. Then on November 26th, they broke through the seal on the main door to peek through the hole with a candle and peer into the antechamber for the first time since it was sealed. I would put my money on the November 4th date if they want to tie the opening to that, but you're right that the November 26th date is significant too, so that could be it as well.

And you're also right that being vague, absent, and just not giving a crap about keeping the public informed is not only extremely disrespectful, it's highly unprofessional and makes their comms/PR operation shop look like amateurs who have no idea what they're doing and should not be in those roles. The horrible job they are doing is not only hurting the museum, it's hurting Egypt and its global reputation very badly.

    How to make a 3 min video with no real information last 13 min....

      Hey, Michael... why don't you leave your phone number here for me to give you a recorded call to confront you about your trolling comment? Please leave it here and I'll be happy to post the entire conversation with you online. People like you troll from your mother's basement in your cheeto-stained onsie, but you don't have the courage to stand behind your comments in real life. Let's change that. Send me your phone number and city/state, and we'll make a live video together of you standing behind your comments directly to my face. This is a #NoTrollZone and if anyone wants to troll, we'll meet you in your home turf and let you defend your trolling in person face to face. Please reply with your phone number and home address and I'll be happy to come there with a camera crew.

    "The GEM was closed for the first ten days of June, we don't know why." There, done. No five minutes of conjecture and wondering. If I wanted rambling with no point, I'd watch political speeches on CSPAN.

      Why don't you take your trolling elsewhere. Or better yet, go create something helpful and informative yourself instead of being a cheeto-stained basement troll. The news in that sub-point (one of many) was precisely IN what it could have possibly meant (i.e., five minutes of conjecture and wondering). If you want twitter-length updates in 240 characters, go to that platform and get your news from there. But don't come onto someone else's page and tell them how to do their thing when you are clearly producing nothing yourself of any value whatsoever for anyone. #NoTrollZone

      Trolls gonna troll. They have nothing better to do. Let's see your smiling face on camera there @bbrruuccee2 It's funny that you troll-post that this video was so "painful" to watch, yet you continued watching it all and somehow just couldn't tear yourself away, no matter how "painful" it was for you. Poor thing. I hope you sought medical attention afterwards. #PrayersForBruce

    Anyone know if it's open yet? Have they moved everything? If I go in October, will I miss out on anything??
