Exploring an Abandoned Palace in Cairo

I spent a night staying in the guest suite of an old palace that's located on an island called Dahab Island in the middle of the Nile River just south of central Cairo. Little did I realize that my little corner of the palace was the only part ever finished and livable. The rest appears unfinished or abandoned or both, and is frozen in time on this isolated corner of the island. So I couldn't r...

    John, thank you for this important update. We are going to both the EMC at Tahir square and the Pyramids in Gizeh by bus tours from cruise ship on Oct 29. Now the question is, if the GEM will be also included in the tour to the pyramids. Is it at a new location or near the existing bus parking for the pyramids. And may I ask also: I assume the EMC is still lots of things to visit -or- are most of the artefacts yet transferred to the GEM so that EMC is almost empty despite the Tut-Mask and his coffin ?

    November 2023 I visited Egypt, hoping to visit the GEM. As you know it wasn't open yet, so I visited the old museum on Tahrir Square. My first visit was in 1992, after that I visited like 15 times. Note that the Tutanchamun exhibition in the old museum is now like a third of what is was. The mask and jewelry are there, but NOT the chariots, coffins and etcetera. I had a laugh, but if it were my one and only visit to Egypt and the useum I would be very disappointed.

      There is another video on the channel here entitled What's Left in the Old Egyptian Museum that was made to show people what they can still see outside of the King Tut treasure room at the old museum (since filming is not allowed inside of the treasure room). However, inside of the treasure room, all of the major pieces are still on display (the mask, 2 gold inner coffins, and jewelry).

    Arriving in Egypt on October 16th (been planned for 3 months). How long will it take to view all that is open as of October 17? I assume that it will take more than 1 day. Will a single ticket purchase get you access to multiple days?

    • @TheEgyptTravelChannel
      @TheEgyptTravelChannel 11 часов назад

      A single ticket purchase will be only for one day. But it depends on how long you take. Some people walk through the galleries in 1 or 2 hours. Others like to stay and look at each artifact longer and read all of the plaques, which could take 3 or 4 hours or more. It all depends on each person's visit style.

    👏👏👏Yes, great news🥳🎉! The Ministry of Tourism should reimburse me for the costs I incurred to come and see the GEM🤣As noted on their website about the opening I came in March 2023, then in June 2023, and last time in August 2024🤔. The Intercontinental flight tickets weren't refundable, so I had to come. I'm glad to see the old museum (almost empty) and the pyramids, but not three times in just over a year.💸💸💸

    • @TheEgyptTravelChannel
      @TheEgyptTravelChannel 11 часов назад

      They never promised any opening, so anyone who came before the official opening was taking a risk on their own. Everything about the museum always said that nothing is certain until the official announcement came from the government.

  • @tomasipaolo
    @tomasipaolo 23 часа назад

    so, they are just opening another small part of the GEM. But King Tut and his collection won't be there, for Anubis knows how long. I think this GEM saga is just as embarrassing as that of Berlin Brandenburg Airport, probably worse in fact. >10 years delay and counting. I am not visiting Egypt again, until they open it COMPLETELY.

    • @mohamedebrahim4795
      @mohamedebrahim4795 20 часов назад

      The museum has been completed since 2022 in terms of artifacts and since 2019 in terms of construction. The reason for the delay is the political circumstances and Corona. How can we hold a celebration in which leaders from the West are expected to attend while at the same time they are committing genocides in the Middle East alongside us?

    • @TheEgyptTravelChannel
      @TheEgyptTravelChannel 11 часов назад

      The 12 galleries that were just opened are NOT "another small part." They make up the overwhelming majority of what was waiting to be opened. But you are right that the delay is very shameful and embarrassing for Egypt. The public relations and information management a the GEM have been and still are very poorly managed.

    • @TheEgyptTravelChannel
      @TheEgyptTravelChannel 11 часов назад

      While the artifact installations were done inside and the main building itself was completed a while ago, there are other buildings around the main building that were not completed, such as the Khufu Solar Boat building. That was still a construction site until recently. Also, the infrastructure around the site was not finished either, and the walking bridge from the GEM over to the Giza Plateau remains under construction, as well as the main road out in front of it where the new Giza Metro station is being built.

    • @tomasipaolo
      @tomasipaolo 7 часов назад

      @@mohamedebrahim4795 I see no reason to throw politics into it. First of all, no Western country is committing genocide in the Middle East. In fact, Italian soldiers in UN positions have been attacked by Israeli soldiers... Israel and Palestinians + Iran-sponsored fighters are at war as usual, and both are to blame for this. That said, the museum should have opened more than 10 years ago, the delays have nothing to do with Middle East politics.

  • @redv8508
    @redv8508 23 часа назад

    It is unlikely to fully open until the war in Gaza is resolved and that will be a few months more at least. My guess is Sept, Oct or Nov 2025 it will fully open because it will be right before the busy season starts and gives plenty of time to build up hype.

    • @TheEgyptTravelChannel
      @TheEgyptTravelChannel 11 часов назад

      This is not a bad guess at all. You're right that the war next door is very likely the cause of part of the delay in the full opening.

      I'd say it's about 80% open. The only things left are the King Tut gallery and the Khufu Solar Boat building out back. But then... what museum is ever 100% open at any given time? Most museums around the world rotate various parts that are open and closed throughout the year, and most museums only display a fraction of their collections to the public.

      Very good point. They have an additional 500 LE charge to add a tour guided by museum staff. The museum staff guides are mostly all very new and fresh out of guide school, but they speak foreign languages very well and are eager to interact with guests. However, the new museum is well labeled enough that you really don't need a tour guide for a visit to it. You'd be much better off taking the time to browse and read and explore the exhibits at your own leisure and pace.

      It's likely by the end of the year, but I believe that they want to do a grand "parade" for the transfer of the Tut artifacts from the old museum, so however long that takes to organize. It's completely unnecessary, but Egypt loves to do things like that, even if it costs them a lot in lost revenue from delays.

      @@TheEgyptTravelChannelThis is true, there will most likely be a celebration, but the delay is not because of the celebration. Egypt held the greatest celebration in the history of the African Cup of Nations, and this was done with the refinishing and restoration of stadiums that can accommodate 24 teams for the first time in the history of the African Cup of Nations, instead of only 16 teams. All of this happened in only four months. I spent hours in that lovely old place in the 90's...we stayed at the Hilton which is contiguous w/ the Egyptian Museum, just across a narrow alley which made the museum very easy to visit and linger. The museum is an artifact in and of itself. Like the old Winter Palace hotel @ Luxor.

    It isn’t safe for Americans due to the overall hostility towards American citizens. But no country is entirely safe.

    Some family members wish to visit Egypt. But for Americans it is not safe. Does anyone have any experience.

    I had to postpone my trip to Egypt from April 2024 to October 2024 (so in less than 2 months) and I comforted myself by thinking that, at least, the Grand Egyptian Museum will be open by then.... :(
