Satellite internet isn't new, but Starlink is looking to provide internet speeds that are almost as good as your current provider but the ideal use is to connect people who don't have access to broadband due to living remotely.

I happened to have a brief conversation in a facebook post with the activist who run a campaign that request for undersea cable to land on Saint Helena Island, a remote island in the middle of south Atlantic. The poor activist seemed to lost their hope even if they manage to get the undersea cable landed on the island, because it'll eventually monopoly by the same ISP that currently providing them satellite internet. At the time of conversion, Starlink didn't seem to bring them any hope either. They explained that being low earth orbit satellites, Starlink require more ground base stations than traditional sats, render them useless for the extreme remote places like their island. But a few days ago I saw the news that the newer Starlink sats got some laser for communicating among the sats themselves, that could probably give the islander some hope for better internet.

2:57 whats a POE supply? ohh, Power over Ethernet cable?
Not available in the southeast US that I can tell. How did you guys get in on the beta? This is the content I’m interested in. Where and how to jump on this wagon.
I wonder how the handoff to the next satellite in rotation works. Will there be a 1 minute pause in my movie every few minutes? Even 42000 satellites might struggle with traffic once they have several million users worldwide. I'm a prime candidate for this service so I hope it works out.
Satellite Internet can be relatively fast and low latency, but you're not going to get it from HughesNet. In TV news vans, there's been a trend to shift away from traditional C and Ku band linear video satellite streams to Ku/Ka band data streams. You pay out the nose for this service compared to residential satellite Internet, and it takes thousands of dollars worth of equipment to pull off, but it's about as good as a cable modem. That's why new trucks and live streaming backpacks use bonded cell modems instead; at this point it's cheaper.
StarLink is damn impressive for what it is. I wonder how badly it's affected by rain fade, since it looks like it's probably using Ku or Ka band (guessing by the size of the dish) and the satellites are essentially a new Iridium constellation.
Yes I can finally live in the sticks! 😀

Even if it's only 25deg in the shade, a dish like this could easily exceed 40deg in direct sunlight. Hopefully they engineered it to cope with those kind of temps.

Imagine some dude somewhere on a mountain having better internet than you..
100% correct! Not to mention that it will also work if you're in a yacht or ship in the middle of the ocean. And it's better than most internet connections in the city.
Honestly, from what I’ve seen, Starlink is incredibly disappointing. ~100Mbps might sound okay-ish now but in 5-10 years that’s a really bad connection again. And then you have 42000 huge pieces of trash orbiting the earth. The use case for this is so small compared to the issues it creates, ask some (hobby) astronomers what they think about all those satellites in near earth orbit.
For most people who this would be interesting for, 5G is a much better solution that’s less expensive and doesn’t require some rich guy to litter our orbit with his expensive toys.
Starlink is (in best conditions) already ten times (!) slower than the Internet I get for literally a third of the price via cable in a rural area. I know, I’m not the person this is meant for but do you really need fast Internet on a Boat?
@@leoklaus I dont live on a boat i live in rural Kansas and I can hardly play a video at 360p with my internet cause it's so bad and I dont have another option besides satellite internet which also sucks.
@@leoklaus My download speed is barely half a megabyte per second on a good day.
@@CozyRosiee I see, and I didn’t mean to say that no one would use this. The cost/benefit is just way off.
A solution based on 4G or 5G would make a lot more sense in these situations. You could provide relatively fast internet to a bunch of people using a single tower with a fast connection and upgrading a cell tower is a piece of cake compared to a satellite. The issue for me here is the longevity of this, not the usefulness right now.
In 5 years from now, you could just swap out the radio of the tower, allowing for much faster internet. You just can’t do that with a satellite you’re stuck with what you have.
And building a ton of well connected cell towers is a also lot cheaper than sending 42000 satellites into orbit, especially since not only home users but also mobile clients would profit from it.
I know you can’t just build a cell tower everywhere, but for most of these already rare cases where satellite internet is the best option currently, it would probably work.
