As a Windows user for almost 2 decades, getting an M1 MacBook Air and randomly testing Windows on it was shockingly smooth - feels native! Even threw a couple of benchmarks on it. The Parallels Team has made great use of the M1's capabilities. I'm very happy with using MacOS as a daily driver and with how efficiently virtualisation works on this - I can jump to Windows and Linux whenever I want without even needing to reboot, the 16GB RAM turned out to be a good choice! Edit: After a year, I'll add that Parallels has gotten even better. I currently have Windows 11, Kali Linux, and Windows 10 all running without issues on my M1 MacBook Air. Might get rid of W10 soon though, as ARM builds have stopped and W11 feels better.
Hi @@rishabhjain3715 - With 8GB, while running Parallels if you try to instantly switch to macOS and perform other multi-tasking simultaneously (outside Parallels, while running the VM actively) there might be some lag there. But if you won't be switching out of Parallels while it's running, it should be fine. Just keep in mind that once you get 8GB, it's non-upgradeable. At least for storage, you can connect an external SSD. If you feel you still need 16GB, try getting it with an education/student discount if you can. Also FYI - you will only be able to run ARM-based Windows 10 for now, not the regular x64. So keep that in mind, as not all games/applications may work. I'm a heavy multi-tasker and run multiple Virtual Machines simultaneously and often have to actively switch between them, so I chose 16GB+1TB because I will be using this at least for the next 5 years. Apple Tax is too high for upgrades, but that's just how it is. TL;DR - If you'll be running 1 dedicated VM most of the time in Parallels and feel you can manage with 256GB internal storage, go for the base variant. It's amazing value for INR 92900, considering you can run both macOS and ARM Windows on it.

(I do not want to use Autocad made for Mac, or MacOs)
i think intel could have done this few years back, they just refused to do it, refused to invest money into development and milk people with what it seems too long outdated processors. they deserve to shut down and let other companies do what they didnt want to, scumbags
I have had this running for months and it's great. That being said, I'd really really really recommend the 16 GB model if you plan to do Windows virtualization.
You can try. I mean, it should work but in general virtualization really begs for more RAM. Sometimes I wish I had 32 or 64GB. (Of course, the first M1s maxed out at 16GB.) You’ll probably not want to keep the Windows virtual machine up all the time so as not to slow down your Mac side of things.
Phenomenal. I was ready to return my MacBook after the Apple store rep lied to me and said I can get bootcamp and use windows on an M1. I was so mad that it wasn’t working since I spent $2000. Luckily this video saved me from the hassle and I can stick to my Mac which I love and have the benefit of windows.
I have one question. Do you know if it’s possible to get windows 10 for free on an M1 mac? I’m pretty sure you have to pay almost $100 a year for this.

Fun for 14 days... afterwards it's from 80euro/yr for the hypervisor only. Or nearly 100 euro for a one-time one-version one-machine only licence. Apple should have added this into the OS since they've taken the Bootcamp/DualBoot option off the table for the M1 platform... Not good enough for the price considering it's still ARM64 limited and not doing something like an X86 vCPU on the hypervisor level. Maybe someday VirtualBox or something similar can come to Mac M1 for a free or a really pretty cheap solution.
Most people using Parallels are using it for work so the price is pretty reasonable to be able to run x86 apps on a mac, I run insurer software and it is all x86, and looks like it was written for windows xp but that's another story...

Do you know what is the most insane part of M1? M1 runs Windows faster than the Microsoft Surface Pro X which is also base on ARM. Surface Pro X only got around 3000 marks on Geekbench, and my MacBook Air got 5000 marks when running Windows on Parallel. Both of them are running Windows 10 on ARM.
@@skiez7430 My Mac has never run on 4 GB. Not from Day one. It settles in at about 6 or 7 until you open an App, then it’s right around 8. I’ve got 16 and I’m usually using around 12 with my normal usage, which really isn’t anything special. A browser with a few tabs open, a couple of Apple apps, maybe some PDF’s. It’s run that way consistently since 2013. So in my mind a Mac needs at least 16 GB for basic stuff and more for power usage.
So two questions: 1. will you do any comparison between the M1 running the VM and an actual laptop? 2. in the parallels setup, there was an option for Productivity and one option for Gaming. What is the difference between the two?
I think if you choose Productivity mode, the VM is assigned less resources, and you also have the ability to have Windows windows on your Mac desktop. I don't know if you still have access to Windows desktop. You probably do, but it may be inside a window, not full screen.

Parallels is NOT running windows 64bit that we all use day to day. Please pay attention, this is the ARM64 version of the windows which is not compatible with most applications yet. So you can run into issues running or configuring different applications that would otherwise run on normal windows 10 64 bit.
It’s crazy that not that long ago people said Macs were bad for games, due to support for macOS but mostly because of the intel chips, and now both those problems seem like the past now. I’m definitely getting the m1x when it comes out, very excited!
I'd be interested to know if the SSD is getting caned doing this. I have a suspicion that code is transcoded and cached via swap. Could be wrong but I'd rather someone else take the risk 😉
Been using this since it was in beta. Really amazing performance. There only thing to note is that you may need an Windows license (though that has always been the case with Parallels).
Can you also remove the Apple software afterwards from an Apple M1 on which you have installed Windows 10 via "parallel"? (so that it becomes a real Windows machine?) Or do you need the Apple software because everything is partly done "in the cloud"
Lots of games (like valorant) won't run in VM's because of anti-cheat software, and lots of x86 games won't run very well in windows on arm because that relies on Microsoft's x86 to arm emulator, which isn't as good as rosetta 2. If you're going to get a mac, and want to do gaming on the side, I would get and x86 mac and get an arm mac in a few years when more games are optimized.
I just tried out Parallels on my m1 mac mini a couple of weeks ago - pretty impressive and super snappy for a VM. The benchmark for my system is the equivalent of an I5 7th gen top CPU - amazing performance and it can only get better.
I love my M1 MBA and adding Windows with Parallels has been the best virtualization experience I have ever had. But let's calm down with the accolades. Sharing resources has a price, especially if you only have 8GB of RAM. A reasonably equipped Intel or AMD laptop is going to run Windows better than a M1 Mac with a Developers' Build of Windows for ARM.. But the Parallels experience is "good enough" when I need software exclusive to Windows.
Disliked because you can't do this in 2022. I assume that you updated the title, but failed to actually check whether or not the info is up to date. Windows 10 for ARM is no longer available on Insider preview.
Correct me If I'm wrong , but I think the reason why the games don't work is because they're compiled for X86 & AMD64 instruction set not for the ARM instruction set.
Apple should have thought about it , since the SSD writes on M1 is huge, SSD life decreases drastically ..don't think anyone would be able to trust those SSD after 2-3 years of heavy usage. At least, they should have given option to upgrade the SSD .
omg THANK YOU. after so much thought I finally upgraded from my 2015 retina to the M1 macbook air, I just decided to go back to studying and I NEED microsoft to run a few programs. so frustrating. I'm glad that these programs came out just in time for me though. now I can still use my mac and the one or two microsoft programs required. maybe some games too
Get a Shadow account and install that in the Windows virtual machine and you should be able to play all the windows games or install shadow directly on the Mac and play your windows games inside shadow
I'm using Geforce Now App, which is optimised for M1, and I can play hours on battery, it's brilliant, problem is that gamepads cannot rumble. Playing Cyberpunk 2077 at the moment.
I watched the video that Parallels publish yesterday. Now I'm switching to M1 Macbook - ordered right before writing this. I cannot stand how hot my laptop gets and all the fan noise. The performance due to CPU throttling is bad. Hopefully, Microsoft is incentivized to make their software work better on ARM now. The only thing that I really need Windows for is Visual Studio. If only they could make VS for Mac as good as its Windows-counterpart then I would be happy
When I installed Parallels, I set options to keep Windows separate from my Mac as much as possible. No camera, microphone, etc. I set up for office use not gaming. The one issue I've always had with Parallels is it's basic settings are for full integration with the Mac, which I don't want to have.

Oh boy this video was a rollercoaster... First, you literally ran a geekbench test on the virtual machine with 6 cores ONLY, and only some ram allocated to it, and are comparing the scores to macOS itself(which runs natively without restrictions) and getting excited about macOS being faster? Second, that dell xps does NOT, not even close, have the best intel laptop chip like you have said. Do you even know computers? That DELL has "low power" intel cpus, which are 1/6 of the performance of actual high power intel laptop cpus. I know you can't compare these but in the video you literally got shocked while saying the M1 beat "the best intel laptop cpu" (at 5:24) what the hell? Think twice before saying and getting "shocked" about certain things and do more research before making videos... And third, you should warn people that that version of windows you are installing is an "insider preview" and it's an ongoing beta. Windows 10 ARM stable is out for years now but you can't download it. That being said, you should right in the beggining of the video and maybe refer it some more times during the video that this is NOT recommended for professional use, since it is a beta, which will for sure have bugs or crashes. Still, this was an awesome achievement for M1 macs and intel still sucks ass, but that doesn't everything max said in this video actually valid.
Jup. Also unplugging the xps most likely put it into a lower power mode so the lower score is the obvious result. Unless he shows that its still running on the highest power mode this statement is somewhere in between usless and intentionally missleading, but then again he appears to have no clue of what hes talking about so it might just be that
As an academic, I dearly hope that X86 based software work on their ARM-based versions soon. For example, as a computational archaeologist, I use complex GIS mapping software like ESRI's ArcGIS Pro, which will not be released on ARM anytime soon. That is the only thing holding me back from getting a Mac and pushing for a Ryzen, I guess.
I really just have to emphasise how grateful I am for you for creating this video! Honestly I could cry 😂😭 Thank you thank you thank you so much. It took my two days of wasted downloads and watching useless videos to come across your channel and this great video. It works. Thank youuuuu once again. ✊🏾✨
Suggestion: to give us a better idea of the performance, find a way to compare power usage of M1 to an Intel/AMD version, and definitively a way to measure FPS :D
That's beating a dead horse, of course the M1 makes Intel/AMD look like bulldozer but the latter two have proper gaming GPUs (and IO), storage and other stuff...

Do you recommend 8GB+256GB M1 variant if I want to run parallels like 2-3 times in a week for very basic gaming...???

Been using this since it was in beta. Really amazing performance. There only thing to note is that you may need an Windows license (though that has always been the case with Parallels).
But why without license what the problem you facing?
Yeah, this was my concern too!
Hey, quick question. Is this just a preview or will I be able to use this for a longer time?
Is this a one time pay or just a subscription?

I love my M1 MBA and adding Windows with Parallels has been the best virtualization experience I have ever had. But let's calm down with the accolades.
