When he said "I died in the trenches years ago" that's when the full weight of what I'd been watching all of seasons one and two hit me. The toll human beings take on one another. Very sad.

I never understood why so many people stopped watching the show after Jimmy died. It's not like he was the main character. It was always about Nucky. Jimmy was just an important piece in the plot that made Nucky's character evolve. Jimmy told Nucky that he can't be half a gangster anymore. After killing him Nucky finally became a gangster. Besides what did you people expect? Jimmy was a character that HBO made up. Nucky was a real life gangster who ran Atlantic City for years.

+crashboy0 Jimmy Darmody was not a character made up by HBO, He was a real man, and he actually was killed by his friend Al Capone.

The Jimmy from the show has all most nothing to do with the real Jimmy.

Me neither, and since the real Jimmy this character was supposedly inspired by was a lot more successful and had a more productive life than the Darmody character it's too bad the writers couldn't do more with their own creation. He was doomed from the start but I would have written him differently and cast someone else who exudes ambition and restlessness more poignantly than Pitt did in this series.

You cant be half a gangstar anymore, I think Jimmy said that to Nucky in the series premiere and at the end of season 2, Nucky is killing Jimmy and asking for no forgiveness, looks like he took Jimmy's advice. Jimmy was my favorite character, I hated how he got manipulated by the Commodore but I wished he would have come out on top, it's always good to see the young guys get ahead and that's what we saw at the end with Luciano and Lansky

Don't blame the writers. Blame Michael Pitt for acting like a complete prick on set. He'd show up late or not at all and had serious drug problems. The staff just couldn't take it anymore.

idk bout all that..all that i heard was he was difficult to work with cause he could never remember his lines...the scene were theres other people in the room where jimmy decides if hes gonna kill nucky he has like a few lines but all the camera shots of him are show only his face cause they had him alone ..i guess he kept screwing up the lines and it isn't even a long scene...but some people that worked on set pointed out that scene as an example of how bad he was but also pointed out how bad nuckys first girlfriend was (forget her name) she kept showing up late and had a drug problem...not sayin your wrong but jus mentioning that when all that stuff got leaked it was bout both of them and all they said bout jimmy was he was hard to work with cause he couldn't remember his lines...all the shit about the girl was way worse if u look it up its kinda funny she was fuckin crazy

The real end of Boardwalk Empire, if ya think about it

  • @johnmagill3072
    @johnmagill3072 6 лет назад +17

I found this as the reason they killed off Jimmy. At the end of season 2 of Boardwalk Empire, Michael Pitt’s character Jimmy Darmody is unceremoniously shot in the face and killed. Although this may have helped the plot move forward, it was also a way to get Pitt out of the show. He was known to have a casual work ethic, an unenthusiastic attitude, and was always forgetting his lines. He was also known to go off-script, all of which cost production money and led to him being released from the show. Even his own agent told Deadline that UTA fired Pitt as a client because he’s really difficult on set.

This is the first time we got to see who Knucky really was behind all the polished front. Jimmy and the audience got to see who really was for the first time in two seasons. A sociopath with a brilliant mind for corruption and crime. We only got to see it when Knuck wants us to. Brilliant writing.

Don't waste a breath mourning Jimmy Darmody, every kitten grows up to be a cat. They seem so harmless at first. Small, quiet, lapping up their saucer of milk. But once their claws get long enough, they draw blood. Sometimes from the hand that feeds them. For those of us climbing to the top of the food chain, there can be no mercy. There is but one rule: Hunt or be hunted.

But Nucky forgives Eli who was motivated solely by jealousy.
Jimmy's situation was way more understandable.
Does he choose his rich pedophile father or the guy that pimped out his mother and took care of him out of guilt.
I still like the show but the writing was all over the place.

Jimmy was a tortured soul from the beginning just trying to make his way but was misled, corrupted and used by those who he thought loved him. Truly saddening indeed.
There's really so many references, symbols, allusions, quotes it's overwhelming. Margret reading The Ivory Tower, Gillian role playing Diana in front of the Commodore, medicinal alcohol and the parallel of medicinal marijuana (the loophole) . It's culture junkie heaven.

He should've just listened to him instead of looking at him for who he used to be and remaining to have all these expectations for him based off who was prior to the war. The whole show he was informing Nucky that he wasn't who he was and won't ever be. Because he was a man, not the boy Nucky knew him to be. But people like Nucky aren't ever going to see that, because they're so used to telling, never listening.

It was necessary, though. Jimmy's purpose as a character was to push Nucky over the edge. ("You can't be half a gangster, Nuck. Not anymore.") Jimmy had to be Nucky's first kill, because after Nucky kills, there's not more point to Jimmy. Plus, after all the shit he went through, it was relieving.

Jimmy was neither a leader nor follower - he didnt have a father figure who could guide him in the right direction without feeling manipulated and betrayed, his biological father didnt care for him and Nucky cared for James but not as a father, What people seem to overlook is that James could have a had a crimeless future had he stayed at prinston and not had a such an evil mother, I dont think he chose this life of violence, he was pushed into it.

in my opinion, you can say Jimmy had it coming or he deserved it but to do so would defeat the message the writers are trying to portray. I believe BE brings to light the issues of the 20's and how things are practically still the same today regarding human nature: incest, greed, violence, sex, drugs/alcohol etc.
Nucky introduced a 13 yr old to a 54 yr old for sexual purposes. The Commodore was barely, if at all, around during Jimmy's childhood so Nucky played the father figure.

Lansky told Jimmy to pay Manny, and I do believe Richard is going to set the truth straight with Nucki about the whole season...what will happen I have no clue. One of my other predictions is the kids are going to be affected by Margarets choice with the land. Whether Nucki or the county gets custody who knows. But Margaret has the worse coming to her.

I think what people don't understand is that Jimmy WANTED to die. He always has. Hence the "I died in the trench, years back" line. He knew (& hoped) he'd be killed for his purposeful reckless actions. To not die would have ment failure in his eyes & he probably would've just ended up killing himself at some point. He had to die because it's what HE wanted. This is a tragically sad scene, though.

He should have shot Nucky himself at the press conference not let Capone's mughead screw it all up.

Whether I like the outcome or not, have to admit that it was one of the best shot scenes I've ever watched in any mobster movie or show.

Whether we like the decision to kill Jimmy or not, this scene was beautifully shot and well written. To me, it's one of the best gangster/mob scenes of all time.

Legendary. I would have made an entirely different story line and plot for season 2 and saved what happened in this season for season 3 because I do believe it came all too soon but having said that, this season was one of the best I've ever seen on any show. Jimmy was amazing, and yes I'll miss him, but I doubt the writers wanted their show to depend on a character, now with Jimmy's death they have plenty of opportunity for creative writing on the other characters of the show. Fuck nucky btw.

I think that when you get shot point blank in the head your ability to process speech diminishes greatly.

Damn Nucky is heartless Jimmy was like a son to him could have gave him a pass and banished him or something, bet he would have killed his brother also if his nephew didn't walk in at the last minute.

He knows that giving passes makes him look weak and it creates a sort of domino effect.

Jesus Christ! How can no one see that Jimmy had to die? He betrayed Nucky not once but twice. He might not have wanted to kill Nucky but he went with it anyway. In the real gangster world Jimmy would definitely end up dead. Keeping him alive after all that is not plausible. Nucky couldn't afford to have Jimmy betray him a third time. Plus he has to send a message to those who might perceive him to be weak.

This reminds me so much of the way Steve Buscemi died in the Sopranos. There wasn't quite this much build up, but it was still a painful choice made by a loved one.

Sad as this scene is, it's almost like a blessing for Jimmy to die. He had always been a tragic soul...his dad raped his teenage mum (whom he then slept with), his mind got all messed up by the Great War, his wife tried to run away, he screwed things up with Nucky, unsuccessfully ran Atlantic City through a domineering mother, and finally his wife got killed.
It was sweet relief that he finally got his peace. To the lost. To the lost.

I really thought they were setting Jimmy up to kill himself, Oedipus style...
but then i remembered Oedipus didn't kill himself...
